2008’s Biggest Stories #8: The Fall Of The BMF

They

lived the life most rappers only fantasize about in the booth. For

nearly five years, the Black Mafia Family flaunted their lavish

lifestyle, barely covering up the illegal activities that afforded them

that life.

This

year, an unraveling that started in 2005 came to a close. Demetrius

“Big Meech” Flenory and his brother Terry “Southwest T” Flenory were

sentenced to 30 years in prison for their role as the leaders of a

cocaine empire valued at nearly $270 million. Their sentence came a

year after the brothers pleaded guilty to Continuing Criminal

Enterprise and money laundering charges under which they were indicted

in 2005.

Despite

a plea agreement, prosecutors obtained the long sentence by presenting

evidence of BMF’s 20 year history, gathered over the course of several

years.

The

brothers, who launched their enterprise in Detroit in the late 1980s,

started drawing the attention of federal authorities around 2000, after

Southwest T relocated to Los Angeles, leaving Big Meech in Atlanta.

Their prolific organization drew even more unwanted attention in 2003,

when Meech established BMF Entertainment and began living a life that

did not fit that of an up-and-coming record executive with only one

artist, Bleu DaVinci, signed to his label.

To

make matters worse, Meech was tied to a 2003 shootout outside an

Atlanta-area nightclub, which left two men dead, including Sean “Diddy”

Combs’ former bodyguard, Anthony “Wolf” Jones.

Just as they spread the wealth in their hay day, the Flenory brothers did not go down alone.

After

the 2005 raids of BMF’s key operations in Georgia, Michigan, Florida,

South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri and California, over 150 members or

associates of the Black Mafia Family were indicted.

Three notable members of the organizations also saw sentences handed down this year.

Jacob

“The Jeweler” Arabov, indicted in 2006, was sentenced in June to two

and a half years in prison. Arabov admitted to falsifying records and

giving false statements to federal prosecutors, in exchange for the

dismissal of more serious money laundering charges. He was ordered to

pay a $500,000 fine and to make a $2 million forfeiture payment to the

government.

Bleu

DaVinci was sentenced to five years and four months in federal prison

back in October, after being convicted of conspiracy to distribute

cocaine. The rapper, born Barima McKnight, was also suspected of having

taken control of BMF’s operations while Big Meech and Southwest T

awaited their sentences.

The

most recent sentencing came on December 17. Fleming “Ill” Daniels was

ordered to serve 20 years for conspiring to distribute cocaine.

Prosecutors maintained that Daniels was personally responsible for the

sale of nearly $1 million worth of cocaine. His trial made headlines

over the summer, when a prosecution witnessed alleged that Jeezy

received kilos of cocaine from BMF.

Despite

boasting of his affiliation to the crew during his early career, Jeezy

has managed to steer clear of their legal troubles.

When they are released from prison in 2031, Big Meech and Southwest T will be in their 60s.

DJ Whoo Kid Launches New Site; Clothing Line

With the support of Hip-Hop tycoon Russell Simmons, DJ Whoo Kid debuted the next phase in his career on Tuesday (December 23) with the launch of RadioPlanet.tv.

The new website will offer viewers 24-hour access to exclusive interviews, sketches and music videos, in a way that Whoo Kid says will change the face of the online urban landscape.

The network will utilize the G-Unit DJ’s extensive connections in the sports and entertainment world, to bring together unlikely group of interview subjects.

The launch broadcast will feature interviews with Cedric the Entertainer, Jamie Foxx, Russell Simmons, 50 Cent, and Robert Patterson, known for his role in the Harry Potter franchise, and star of the new movie Twilight.

According to Whoo Kid, RadioPlanet.tv will offer fans of Whoo Kid’s Sirius Satellite on-air antics a visual alternative.

“My radio show is really out of control. Imagine if you’re watching it now,” Whoo Kid told AllHipHop.com. “I’m just there to make people laugh…It’s been a long time coming, ‘cause we’ve been filming for like years…the comedy is hilarious, definitely not what you see all the time. It’s all gonna be in Hi-Def.”

As an additional endorsement, PlanetRadio.tv will be connected to Russell Simmons’ popular Global Grind platform.

Whoo Kid will also be utilizing his extensive Shadyville DJs network to generate content for the show.

Eighty to a hundred DJs from across the globe will have the opportunity to submit their own interview footage, giving the fans additional access to the celebrities they want to see and widening the DJs’ reach.

“I’ve been doing radio for the last ten, fifteen years,” Whoo Kid shared. “I feel like I should provide other DJs who are big in their markets opportunities for people all over the world to hear and see what they’re doing also. I’m just trying to do something that everybody else is not doing. And I always been doing it, I always been creating new stuff. This is just another platform to promote what I do.”

Before launching this project, he is already on to his next entrepreneurial endeavor.

Whoo Kid has partnered with the New York Knicks’ Tim Thomas to create Nutso, a new clothing line, which they will begin promoting soon.

Somebody emailed me the following:

Louis Vuitton store on 57th and 5th today Jim Jones came in with his entourage and Ne-Yo and Ta Ta (apparently Jay-Z’s cousin) were already there at the register when Jones’ entourage allegedly started beating Ta Ta up as Jim Jones made his way to the side so he wouldn’t get hit by anything. (I suspect if this is true, he was ducking a lawsuit or police involvement) They allegedly tried to picked Ta Ta up and throw him on the glass table in the store. Rumor has it the whole incident was taped.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

These days getting married after 30 is fairly common. Could you imagine getting hitched at the age of 8? No…not 18…8-years-old? A Saudi court has told a young girl that she is forbidden to divorce a man that is 50 years older than her. DAMN. The girl’s mother begged to have her freed from the mess in August, but the marriage contract was signed by the father and the groom. Two men decided it was OK to marry an 8 year old. Here is what a lawyer said: “The judge has dismissed the plea, filed by the mother, because she does not have the right to file such a case, and ordered that the plea should be filed by the girl herself when she reaches puberty.” Even sadder, the father apparently “sold” his daughter into marriage for a sum of money to avoid this financial “recession.” The girl doesn’t even know she is married. She has a few years, but she will be married at 18 unless she can get out of this mess.

Killer Of Rapper T.I.’s Friend Sentenced to 66 Years

Hosea Thomas was sentenced today (December 23) to 66 years in prison for the murder of Philant Johnson, best friend and assistant to Atlanta superstar T.I.

In May 2006, assailants stalked T.I.’s entourage following an after-hours party at the Club Ritz, located in the Roselawn section of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Along highway I-75 the rapper’s entourage was fired upon, mortally wounding Johnson and injuring several others.

In June, Hosea and his brother Padron Thomas were arrested and charged with murder and felonious assault.

According to police, the shooting stemmed from several incidents involving the brothers and T.I.’s entourage at the Club Ritz.

First, the Thomas brothers were allegedly barred from entering T.I.’s VIP area that night, and an ensuing scuffle resulted in one of them being struck with a bottle.

Later, the Thomas brothers allegedly became more enraged once T.I. began throwing money into the crowd during his performance.

During the trial, T.I. assisted prosecutors by testifying about his recollections of the deadly shooting.

Since the murder, the Atlanta star has spoken often about how losing his best friend to violence caused him to reevaluate his life and the messages he conveyed in his music.

Along with the murder conviction, Hosea Thomas was found guilty last month of felonious assault and illegally having a gun after a felony conviction.

Previously, Thomas was convicted of drug possession and trafficking.

His brother Padron, who at press time has not been sentenced, is a listed sex offender with convictions on robbery and rape charges.

Additionally, Padron was charged with tampering with evidence pertaining to the Johnson murder.

He remains in the custody of US Marshals for an unrelated drug case.

Shontelle

Shontelle is a beauty fresh from the island of Barbados who

spent some of her life proving to her parents that a career in music isn’t

hazardous to her future. While attending the University of the West Indies, she

penned the Soca hit “Roll” that is most famously sung by Alison Hinds. Writing

“Roll” helped her land a deal with SRC, but it was her versatility in singing

Urban Pop and Soca that gave her the creative freedom in her music. This year

she released her first album, Shontelligence, which featured her popular single “T-Shirt.”  Shontelle’s ability to tap into

multiple genres as well as penning most of the songs on her album, makes her a

viable competitor in the music industry. Hopefully another hit or two from Shontelligence should open doors for songwriting opportunities and

possibly duets with some of our favorite artists in the near future.  – Mo’ BT-Shirt – Shontelle

Kevin Rudolf

This year Kevin Rudolf introduced us to his rock/ rap mash

up by hooking up with Lil Wayne for his hit single “Let It Rock.” The New York

native signed to Cash Money Records/Universal Republic Records and dropped his

debut album, In the City.

Though Rudolf may seem new to many, he’s been making moves

behind the scenes in the music industry for quite some time. He is a

writer/guitarist/producer and has been offering his skills on the guitar to

megastars such as Timbaland, Lil Kim and many others. Currently Kevin Rudolf is

featured on the single “Shooting Star” by David Rush, also featuring rapper

Pitbull. As his name begins to create new waves, expect more hot collaborations

and backroom heat from this rising star. From what we saw in 2008, it is almost

certain that Kevin Rudolf will have us rockin’ again in 2009. – Isha

Jack Splash

With the 2008 release of Time Traveler, Jack Splash and Panda 1 as the funk-filled duo

Plantlife, brought our ears back to the ‘70s and early ‘80s when Prince and

P-Funk reigned supreme before rock, soul and funk went their separate ways.

Splattering yester-years’ grooves into production for John Legend, Alicia Keys,

Raheem DeVaughn, Jennifer Hudson and Solange Knowles, Splash slipped Hip-Hop

soul under the radar in 2008. Set to collaborate with Missy Elliott, Jamie Foxx

and the critically acclaimed pairing with Cee-Lo to name a few, Splash is

hailed as the maestro to usher in the next generation of funk, elevating his

bold batch of Hip-Hop electronica funk in 2009.

Kid CuDi

Kid CuDi is definitely an artist to watch in 2009. Aside

from recently signing to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music, CuDi has garnered

attention on his own through the release of his mixtape A Kid Named CuDi. Working under and using Plain Pat as a mentor can’t

hurt, either. CuDi’s currently running off of the steam from 2007’s “Day N’

Nite”. The single is consistently being added and gaining airplay. Jim Jones

even helped propel the single by remixing it, even though it was one of the

worst remixes ever recorded. Since then, he’s rocked clubs with DJ A-Trak and

collaborated with Kanye West on 808s and Heartbreak and the international leg of the Glow in the Dark

tour. CuDi’s currently working on his untitled LP, aimed for release this

spring. In the meantime, download A Kid Named CuDi from 10DEEP (www.10deep.com/KIDCUDIMIXTAPE)

Mr.

Hudson

Having already broken onto the UK scene with his album A

Tale Of Two Cities (as Mr. Hudson & The

Library), Ben Hudson recently signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label and

is set to be the name on everyone’s lips in 2009. Featured on the Louis Vuitton

Don’s 808s & Heartbreak,

Hudson’s creative love bomb gives reason to believe that an electro ‘80s

revival with a Hip-Hop twist could be on the horizon. He’s not exactly the

poster boy for Hip-Hop soul, but the Oxford grad white boy from Birmingham,

England, has more musical prowess to him than meets the eye. Interested in

Kanye’s newest member to the G.O.O.D. squad? Either pick up his album A

Tale Of Two Cities or take a peek at his

MySpace page, www.myspace.com/mrhudson, and check out his latest track, “There

comes to breaking records, is calling the hottest record in the world. –

2008’s Biggest Stories #9: The Return Of The Old-School Rapper

In

a way, 2008 could be called the year of the Hip-Hop comeback. Several

well respected “Old School” acts made a return to the limelight this

year, many announcing plans for new projects.

The

first to announce such a comeback was Heavy D, who tested the waters in

January with his performance as a rapper in over a decade. Upon

announcing the show, for which he tapped Big Daddy Kane and Doug E.

Fresh for support, Heavy D announce plans to release a follow up to his

1999 album Heavy. But Vibes  would

be a little different, he promised. The project, which was released via

iTunes on September 30, finds Heavy D tapping into his Jamaican

heritage to create a Roots/R&B blend that many found surprising.

Shortly after Hev’s announcement, Crucial Conflict released their first album in nine years, dropping Planet Crucon on January 29. Rakim was next, partnering with Koch records to release Live, Lost & Found,

a collection of 17 tracks from the legend’s 20-plus year career, as

well as four previously unreleased tracks. And just in time for their

induction into the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors class of 2008, Naughty By Nature

revealed they were putting the finishing touches on their first project

as a trio since their breakup in 2000.

Bigger

than reunion projects and new releases was a general acceptance of

seasoned acts in the mainstream. M.O.P., Nice & Smooth, Bun B, and

Big Daddy Kane were among the acts to take part in Scion’s Metro Live

series, bringing their classic hits to a new generation with the

support of a live band.

Smirnoff Vodka tapped KRS-One, Q-Tip and Common to recreate some of their

greatest songs as part of a new marketing strategy. T.I. signed

Eightball & MJG to his young Grand Hustle roster, and even Ruthless

Records saw a reemergence thanks to a partnership with Sony Records.”I

don’t believe that Hip-Hop is only for kids, because you have people in

their 30s and 40s, some in their 50s, that grew up off of Hip-Hop

music,” says Kane, who celebrated his 20-year anniversary in November

with a live performance in New York, and is contemplating a new live

album. “They want to hear the music that they grew up on. And they’re

willing to come out and support those shows. Therefore, it creates a

market. You have a lot of artists who are active and doing shows, and

they’re creating a [larger] fan base. I think that what’s real stands

out. These are people who didn’t get record deals because they wanted

to get rich. You got into it as an artform. You wanted to be

recognized. It was something that you had a love and passion for. And I

still have that love and passion for it, especially when I see it

reflected in the fans.”

As Craig G and Marley Marl’s 2008 collaboration Operation: Take Back Hip-Hop offers, here’s hoping that a look back at the old will inspire the new.

Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z Sued Over Single “Enough Cryin’

Hip-Hop Soul queen Mary J. Blige and rapper Jay-Z are at the center of a new federal lawsuit involving allegations of song theft.

According to the suit Jermaine Jumpp and Michael C. Adams, claim they gave a “compact disk” to the “office” of hitmaking producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, that contained a song called “On My Grind.”

The New Jersey pair further state that Blige’s single “Enough Cryin’,” which was recorded four years later and produced by Jerkins, sounded very similar to “On My Grind.”

The new lawsuit comes months after Blige was hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit over her hit song “Work That.”

That song’s owner, Drama Family Entertainment, filed its lawsuit against Blige in August, claiming the songstress used “Work That” without its permission.

Music for the single was allegedly written by producer Theron “Neff-U” Feemster.

Despite Blige being prominently named in Jumpp and Adams’ lawsuit, TMZ.com reports that Jay-Z’s role in the situation is unclear in the suit.

Knockout Nation: Holyfield Robbed? Pac-Hatton for May09? Haye-V. Klitschko, Ken Norton

Holyfield Loses Bid for Fifth World Title

Lumbering

behemoth Nikolai Valuev earned a controversial, unpopular majority

decision against a game Evander Holyfield this past Saturday to retain

his WBA title.

The

listless fight saw Holyfield take command in the early rounds by the

use of his overhand left. Valuev remained tentative, simply throwing

feeler jabs that mostly failed to connect. Because of his immense size,

Valuev kept himself firmly planted in ring center in hopes of goading

Holyfield to come straight at him. The wily veteran didn’t oblige and

constantly gave his slower foe angles to prevent a clean counterattack.

By

the middle rounds Valuev still was not landing more than 3-5 punches

per round. Meanwhile, the 46 year old Holyfield keep up steady movement

to keep his larger foe off-balance. Although the action was sparse,

Holyfield’s sheer activity of roughly 15-20 punches per round appeared

to give him a clear advantage going into round 7.

As

the fight reached the later rounds, Holyfield’s legs began to catch up

to the aged warrior. Now forced to fight, Holyfield now began to get

tagged with slow but thudding overhand shots from the champion. The

Real Deal was not seriously hurt, but Valuev’s clean punches were

enough for him to definitively carry rounds 7 and 8.

In

the championship rounds, Valuev’s cutman urged the champion to go for

the knockout or risk losing his title. Valuev responded by attempting

to stalk Holyfield, but this unfamiliar role and the champ’s slowness

prevented him from landing any significant punches. Holyfield was not

much better, still showing signs of fatigue and looking content to run

out the clock due to his apparent lead.

At the bell, the crowd booed Valuev heavily as the Russian raised his hands in celebration.

Shockingly,

the scorecards for the bout read 114-114, 116-112, and 115-114 to give

Valuev the victory. In the pos-fight interview, Holyfield was convinced

he had won the fight.

“I

don’t think anything was lacking. I hit him more times than he hit me,”

Holyfield stated. “I moved a lot and made him miss punches. And I

fought the fight that I felt was good for me to win.”

Sadly,

because the fight was controversial and possibly a robbery, expect

Evander Holyfield continue with his delusional goal of once again being

the heavyweight champion. Let’s at least be happy it wasn’t a Klitschko

in there this past weekend.

And more words from the man himself.

“My

goal is to be the heavyweight champion of the world,” Holyfield added

after the fight. “I am not interested in fighting for the sake of

fighting, I want to be a champion again and that hasn’t changed.”

Per Holyfield’s trainer Thomas Brooks, the Real Deal’s camp is already seeking a rematch for early next year.

Pacquiao-Hatton Targeted for May 2009

Golden

Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer revealed late last week that Manny

Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton are very close to finalizing terms for a 140

pound title fight in on May 2, 2009.

As of now, both sides are negotiating the potential fight to take place in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao is coming off his most high-profile win to date, an easy 8th

round stoppage over superstar Oscar De La Hoya on December 6. Hatton is

coming off a similar one-sided stoppage of Paulie Malignaggi on

November 22.

According to Schaefer, the fight offers another blockbuster between two of boxing’s premier lighter weight stars.

“I’m

encouraged by the way it’s going, and I’m talking to the Hattons again.

You really have two of the most popular fighters of their generation

fighting each other, and that’s the kind of fight we want to make.”

Although

Floyd Mayweather was spoken of as a potential opponent, Hatton’s

current promotional deal with Golden Boy made the British brawler a

more appealing option to Top Rank and Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum. In

addition, Arum and Mayweather still have simmering animosity from their

very public 2006 split.

Although

many will be disappointed in Mayweather not getting the call, this

promises to be another exciting fight for Pacquiao and a true test of

his abilities with the elite fighters above lightweight. De La Hoya was

a weight-drained shell on December 6 and in Hatton Pacquiao will face a

physically strong, roughhouse fighter. And Hatton is there to be hit.

This one is not to be missed. Early prediction is Manny Pacquiao by late stoppage.

Vitali Klitschko Signs On to Defend WBC Title Against David Haye

Newly crowned WBC champ Vitali Klitschko has agreed to defend his title in June against cruiserweight champ David Haye.

The

deal was finalized not long after younger brother Wladimir Klitschko

easily knocked out Hasim Rahman on December 13. Haye, in his usual

colorful manner, addressed that fight and his promise to become

heavyweight champion of the world.

“I

was in Germany to watch Wladimir Klitschko bore everybody to sleep with

his jab,” Haye quipped to the BBC. “It’s all done and dusted [the

contract]; just need to dot the I’s and cross the t’s. We sat down and

talked numbers and that made sense for both sides and it’s done. There

is no boxing politics involved. Plain and simple, this is how boxing

should be.”

Vitali

has promised to punish Haye in the ring for what he feels was the

immense disrespect Haye showed at a recent press conference.  Haye

displayed a Reservoir Dogs styled picture that featured him holding the

decapitated head of Wladimir Klitschko. Vitali became so enraged that

both men had to be separated.

Vitali

Klitschko returned after a four year layoff in October to stop Sam

Peter in 9 rounds to win the WBC belt. In June, with Vitali at

ringside, David Haye knocked down Monte Barrett five times in route to

a 5th round TKO.

Wladimir Works Over Rahman

Perennial contender had no answer for the younger Klitschko’s ramrod jab. Check out the highlights.

Adamek-Cunningham Fight of the Year?

This

IBF cruiserweight title match featured wild back and forth action. In

the end, Tomasz Adamek picked up the win by virtue of securing 3

knockdowns over a determined Steve Cunningham. Both men hurt each other

numerous times throughout the 12 round slugfest. A rematch is

definitely in order.

Throwback Fighter of the Week: Ken Norton

Chiseled contender Ken Norton was one of a handful of fighters the produced the revered 70s golden age of heavyweight boxing.

A

sparring partner to Joe Frazier, Norton was a virtual unknown until he

got the call to face Muhammad Ali in 1973. Ali did not train well, and

Norton shocked the boxing world by scoring the upset and breaking Ali’s

jaw in the process. In the rematch six months later, an in shape Ali

carried the early and mid rounds through sharp counters and fluid

movement. However, Norton took over by round 7 and looked to be on

track to once again defeat The Greatest. It was only a late rally in

the deciding 12th round that earned Ali the split decision in a fight some feel Norton won.

The next year Norton challenged George Foreman for the heavyweight title, but was blitzed in two rounds.

He went undefeated for the next two years, winning all his fights by KO including a brutal beating of the tough Jerry Quarry.

That

earned Ken another shot at the title in 1976, this time in a

rubbermatch with rival Muhammad Ali. The bout featured many close and

difficult rounds to score although Norton had an early lead. Ali

chipped away and the barely scrapped by with a controversial unanimous

decision of 8-7 in rounds on all scorecards. To this day many feel

Norton was robbed of the title.

Norton

posted wins against Jimmy Young and Duane Bobick before facing a young

Larry Holmes in 1978. In what is considered one of the greatest bouts

in heavyweight history, Norton lost a razor-thin split decision.

By

the beginning on 1979, Norton was beginning to slip from the wear and

tear of boxing. He was KO’d in one round by Earnie Shavers in 1979, and

drew with the ordinary Scott LeDoux that same year. After a dismal

split decision win against Tex Cobb in 1980, Norton retired in 1981

after suffering a scary KO in one round to Gerry Cooney.

Ken

Norton was inducted into the Boxing International Hall of Fame in 1992

and received Fighter of the Year Honors in 1977. The RING Magazine

ranks him #22 on their list of the 50 Greatest Heavyweights of All Time.

Norton

is well known for his “crab defense,” where he would have his elbows

out to his sides and one hand above the other to pick off shots. This

style proved difficult for Ali, who struggled to land clean punches,

especially his famed jab, on Norton.

Ken Norton’s final record stands at 42-7-1, 33 KOs.

German-Palestinian Rapper’s Tour of West Bank Sparks Controversy

The government of Germany is facing criticism for sponsoring a West Bank tour featuring militant, German-Palestinian rapper Massiv.

Massiv, real name Wassim Taha, is viewed as one of the more popular and controversial emcees from Germany.

His songs heavily critique social discrimination and advocate armed revolution.

The rapper has refered to Al-Qaeda and other militant groups as freedom fighters who deserve to be praised for “their fight against the Israelis, the Americans, and the West.”

Massiv often wears a Palestinian keffiyah, a traditional garment, during his shows in support of the Palestinian’s fight for independence.

In one of his promotional posters, the rapper imitates the stone-throwing gesture seen by many Palestinian youths against Israeli forces.

Massiv and three other Palestinian rappers were sponsored for the West Bank tour by Germany’s Goethe Institute, a government backed organization which aims to promote cultural dialogue and understanding.

The institute claims they weren’t aware of Massiv’s controversial lyrics, or the fact that German authorities allege he is connected with Arab street gangs in Berlin.

During the tour the rapper did refrain from making controversial statements, but the outing still drew the ire from German political and parliament members, when participating London rapper Shadia referred to suicide bombings as “the weapon of the oppressed.”

Goethe Institute President Klaus-Dieter Lehmann conceded that his organization made an error in selecting Massive for the tour.

“Some of Massiv’s texts are not free of violence,” Lehmann stated. “In the future we should be more careful with whom we invite.”

At press time Massiv has not commented on the tour’s fallout.

T.I. Mentoring Students In Macon, Georgia

In a continuing effort to focus his court-appointed community service sentence towards the youth, rapper T.I. will be on hand Tuesday (December 23) to speak to a group of students who almost lost their local community center this month.

The Grand Hustler/Atlantic Records artist will help the children at Booker T. Washington Community Center in Macon, Georgia understand the importance of the center, which announced earlier this month that it would shut down due to financial difficulties.

On Friday, however, an emergency contribution of $15,000 from the city of Macon helped the center get back on track.

After spending the weekend reconnecting utilities, the Center opened its door this morning (December 22) to children whose parents cannot afford alternative childcare during the holiday break.

The Booker T. Washington Community Center offers after-school programs throughout the school year as well.

With that in mind we asked Vast for his take on Hip-Hop’s

have a current date for the record but we definitely been plotting on putting

some s**t together. I can’t say

it’ll be Def Jux but it will definitely be Can Ox. I

mean, that’s pretty much all it is. I haven’t been on Def Jux

since 2003.”Now, on to the regularly scheduled programming.

KILLER ARMY (Shaw

Brothers, 1980)

“I saw Killer Army

like two weeks ago. Now mind you it’s the same actors that played the Five

Deadly Venoms but they’re younger. That movie was tough. It’s also called Rebel Intruders, it’s also called The Guerillas. It’s one of those movies

that got three names. Killer Army, now you understand what RZA’s

little brother and them were coming [with].”

FIST OF THE WHITE LOTUS (Shaw Brothers, 1980)

“I gotta say this, just to say it.

Fist of the White Lotus, ‘Yo, oh my God.’ That’s a movie I watch once a year, that’s

one of those kung-fu movies. You done seen it 60 times, you know every scene,

and the s**t is still perfect to you. That’s the one with Gordon Liu and he

combined Tiger and Crane to fight the master of the White Lotus clan who was a

pugilist. It’s a Shaw Brother’s jump off with Gordon Liu and the dude that

plays in 5 Fingers of Death [Ed.

Note: Lo Leih aka dude with the mean eyebrows], he

plays the villain.”

ONG BAK: The Thai Warrior (Sahamongkol Film,

2005)

“I’ma pick a new wave one. Ong Bak, that’s Thailand kung-fu. Yo, that movie is

ridiculous. It’s a new standard, it’s a new level. He

does s**t in that like…there’s this one scene, you gotta see the movie for this one scene, he knees a

guy that’s on a bike, the kid had a helmet, his knee breaks through the helmet.

I had to leave the room for 20 minutes.

“And they want to know why we be rhyming mad ill, look what

they put out! [laughing]. Look what they put out for

us to inspire us to come up with mad ill s*t, it’s crazy man.”

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (Sony Pictures Classics, 2004)

“I saw this joint not too long ago called the House of Flying Daggers. House of Flying Daggers was crazy. What

was so sick about that movie is the plot and the story equaled all the graphics

and the fighting. It’s a must see for anybody who is into Hong Kong wire work,

the Chinese wire work and all that, in that genre. I’m real with mine.”

THE LEGEND OF DRUNKEN MASTER (Dimension Films, 2000)

“Drunken Master of

course, Part 2 where he fights the dude in the end with the crazy leg style. Oh

man, that s**t is classic.”

FEARLESS (Rogue Pictures, 2006)

“Speaking of Jackie Chan, let’s bring up some Jet Li. I’m

really into Fearless. Peep that joint

with Jet Li where he’s wilin’ and he’s fighting like

all different styles in a national contest. It’s ridiculous. Good story too.

That’s the jump off right there.”

ENTER THE DRAGON (Warner Bros., 1973)

“I gotta throw Bruce Lee in there.

Out of all of his movies I gotta

put Enter the Dragon. I got to. The mirror fight. Han. Come on, how is your name “Han,” and

you can switch your hand?! Come on man! You got white,

Black, brown and yellow fighting for justice in that movie. The soundtrack is

amazing. The soundtrack makes me write 36 raps.”

MARKED FOR DEATH (20th Century Fox, 1990)

“I gotta rep for my style [Aikido]

that I practiced for a few years, not as many as I liked, but I gotta pick Steven Segal. I gotta pick Marked

for Death when he’s fighting Jamaicans that sell drugs to the kids. It’s

perfect. He has the illest sword fight with Screwface the Rasta drug king at the end. It’s great.”

NINJA SCROLL (Body Taing, 1993)

“I can go in the Anime too. Of course I love Ninja Scroll. Ninja Scroll is stupid. I’ma tell you the

illest part of that movie. The illest

part of that movie was when he was fighting Tessai,

the rock creature. Tessai was going to body him, ok!

He was about to get certified bodied! And then all of a sudden…oh s**t! When he

raped the girl in the very beginning she poisoned him. That was genius. It was

like, That’s what you get for raping her.”

7 GRAND MASTERS (1978) & THE MYSTERY OF CHESS BOXING (1979) & KID

WITH THE GOLDEN ARM (Shaw Brothers, 1979)

“The 7 Grandmasters,

that’s the same actors from Mystery of

Chess Boxing. And put Mystery of Chessboxing

cause that’s where Ghostface Killer is from. I gave

you a nasty list. I gave you the movie that has “Killer Army”

and the movie that’s got “Ghostface” [Chess Boxing]. Chinese chess is serious.

“[The Kid with the

Gold Arm], that’s The Venoms. That movie has “U-God.” Nahmean?

I’d f**k around and give you every movie that’s the Wu-Tang nine. Golden Arm is the s**t, he was a

pugilist, you couldn’t cut him.”

SHOGUN ASSASSIN

(Toho, 1980) & ZATOICHI

“Let me throw some Samurai flicks in there. Lone Wolf

& Cub, yo! Shogun

Assassin. Slow down! Me and my son against the world.

What’s another samurai joint…Zatoichi, amazing. He’s a blind samurai. His movie is

ridiculous.

“Shogun Assassin

was two of them (Lone Wolf & Cub) put together when there’s really five of

them. When you start doing the knowledge on those movies then you get the other

three. Then you even get those two separate. And that’s when you start spazzing and teasing your friends cause they only have the

joined American version which is actually just two joints.”
