ALBUM REVIEW: Brandy – Human

The title of track 13 on Brandy’s latest offering Human sums up the outcome of the on/off actress’ musical comeback attempt—“Something’s Missing.” It’s not that Brandy is out of good ideas, is lacking vocal passion, or that she just can’t cut it any more. It’s the direction in which she’s decided take her music, with production that doesn’t seem to compliment the “girl next-door” persona that she rocked so well. With her Afrodisiac project helmed by man-of-the-moment Timbaland, you’d think that she’d have used her head and included some of the tracks the two worked on for this project, but instead, Brandy settles for her familiar partner-in-crime, Rodney Jerkins. There’s no doubt the man can produce his ass off when he wants to, but for some reason his partnership with the ex-Moesha star on this go round just doesn’t seem to cut the mustard.    Stand out moments on Human include “Warm It Up (With Love),” thanks in part to its ’90s sounding R&B piano riff, and the touching “Long Distance.” Opening with “The Definition,” this track seems to pack a bit more of a punch. It’s the type of record crafted for women to powder their nose to before a weekend out on the town and it actually sounds like something Brandy might have put out on Full Moon. Her emotionally driven first single “Right Here (Departed)” gets two thumbs up for an uplifting quality track that could even rival the Alicia Keys smash “No One”. Aside from the aforementioned, “Camouflage”, “Piano Man” and “True” leave you wondering if you’re really listening to a Brandy album. They just don’t seem to click at all. Imagine the most outrageous R&B collaboration (Al Green and T-Pain, for example). That’s how you feel throughout seventy percent of this album; it doesn’t work. The electronic sound effects used on “Torn Down” sprinkled over the included faint guitar licks—seriously, what’s that all about? As far as songwriting goes, Brandy has always managed to pen a hit. This outing just sees her choice of production sell her short. This is the same woman who told us she wanted to be down, and borrowed the crown from Mary J for a brief spell thanks to her much talked about Never Say Never album. Unfortunately it’s a new day and Human just doesn’t feel like vintage Brandy at all. Full of ballad-esque records and the occasional up-tempo joint, it just simply fails to flow. Hip-Hop Rumors: Plies And T-Pain Beef? Busta Signs With T-Pain? Beyonce Disses The Jacksons?

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

THE DAILY TWO CENTS

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING[email protected].

Lets go!

BUSTA ON T-PAIN’S LABEL?

OK, so Busta Rhymes is now the man of the hour again. First of all, Busta had apologized for the remix of the song “Arab Money.” (Click here to read about it.) We all know he was giving props. What’s interesting is we talked to a few Arab people in the New York region and most didn’t find Ay-Rab to be insulting at all. That maybe just a regional thing.

The The Morning Crew of Hot 97 (Nancy Barrow and DJ Buck) interviewed Busta Rhymes and T-Pain and found out that Busta is now signed to T-Pain’s Nappy Boy Label. WOW. I haven’t confirmed this but it seems to be factual. Now, Bus and Pain Busta have a new hot song so hopefully it’s a good relationship and not too much autotuning. They asked T-pain if he gave Busta a signing bonus and he said he doesn’t give money as a signing bonus. T said he gives out cars and other stuff! Humph! Busta probably wanted some Arab money at least.

WILLI.A.M TO PRODUCE FOR U2?

U2 might be the biggest, grandest rock band ever! Now it appears that Will.I.Am might be producing for Bono and them. There isn’t much more to this and it could have been a “quickie,” but I think it deserves its proper shine. LOL. Anyway, that would be a huge look for the Hip-Hop producer!

BEEF WITH PLIES AND T-PAIN

This is something that I heard a ways back, but its coming out too. There is a beef with Plies and T-Pain. Plies was supposed to perform at the Jingle Jam 08, but T-Pain reportedly said he would leave if Plies went on before him. Then, T.I said he would bring out Plies , but Plies left the building without getting on stage. What the beef is all about…hmmmmmmmmm

Speaking of beef and T-Pain, click here for the mending of ways between “NY T-Pain” Ron Browz and Mr. Pain. I don’t know if there is any truth to this, but I heard that Jay-Z may be trying to block the success of Browz. Why? He’s the dude that produced “Ether” for Nas. I know Jay said he doesn’t do that, but if he’s gonna do it, this would be the one. LOL.

DMX ARRESTED AT SCOTT STORCH’S HOUSE

I have newfound respect for Storch! He tried to help DMX! Read:

DMX has been apprehended by FBI Agents at Scott Storch’s house in Miami, according to reports.

The rapper was arrested today (December 9), after police followed up on a tip in regards to his location.

Police could not confirm if the rapper was being treated at a local rehab facility as his lawyer Bradford Cohen has suggested in previous, published reports.

The rapper is expected to be held in a Miami jail until tomorrow morning, when he is expected to be extradited back to Arizona in the next 15 days.

The arrest comes one day after Phoenix, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio offered a $5,000 dollar reward for any information leading to DMX’s arrest.

Now the question I have is: WHO SNITCHED!!?!?! Please don’t let it be Scott!

MARIAH PREGGERS?

The people over at Hello Magazine are suggesting that Mariah might finally be pregnant. In Los Angeles, they are saying that she was recently seen coming out of the obgyn and looked happy as hell. This happened on North Crescent Boulevard and she was reportedly “clutching what looked like a sonogram and being greeted by her entourage with cheers. She was ebullient.” They are saying that this rumor has some basis to it but a rep said it’s a false alarm.

THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE

There has been quite a lot of deliberation about what’s going on with Jeezy and DJ Drama, two powerhouses in the world. It seems the whole thing stems from the fact that Drama is now collaborating musically with Gucci Man. Some of you might not realize, but Jeezy and Gucci have some real beef that got way too ugly back in the day. Anyway, I heard Drama feels like he’s caught in the middle, because he just wants to make music and not worry about other people’s beef. I heard, Jeezy feels like him and Drama were supposed friends and now Drama is making moves with this enemy. I think they are going to deal with it like men and talk it out.

BUGSY DOES GOOD IN THE HOOD

After a brief mention in the rumors, Bugsy says something back:

Gooolllleeee! illseed it’s like that? You guys never have nothing positive to say about me! I’ve had my mgmt send press kits, music, etc. I hit u guys up letting you know about my Voter Registration Buspool (registered over 2,500 minority voters). I’m heavy in the community, none of that matters. I get no love from Allhiphop! Yet, as soon as its beef on my plate you guys air that like its healthy for Hip-Hop! Come on maan!

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Biz Markie is supremely talented. He rap, beat box and DJ, but he does pretty well with the kids. No, not in an R. Kelly manner! Check this out to see what he does for the kiddies to teach them Hip-Hop.

Man, this is a crazy rumor. I heard a Delaware Hip-Hop group named the 49ers paid Cool Breeze of the Dungeon Family for a verse upfront out of respect for the ATLein and dude straight disappeared! He didn’t even do the song! WTF? That’s not how the South does!

The rumor about Max B might be premature. Looks like Yayo would just like to bring him over to G-Unit, but its not likely.

B.o.B. is killin’ ‘em out here. Click here to check out his recent power move on the industry! And its better than autotune!

Sexy siren Tweet has reportedly signed with Motown.

This one is pretty funny. Fiend, a rapper from No LImit,is now signed to RocNation under Jay-Z. Fiend been in talks with Jay-Z for about 2 months and they finalized the deal today. Jadakiss hooked it all up. You no Fiend and Jada was on Ruff Ryders together and been working together ever since. Fiend also will be featured on Kiss Next single

Yesterday, I had some random quotes attributed to Rupert Murdoch, but they were actually the quotes of the man the write Ru’s biographer.

Did Papoose finally sign to Koch? That’s what I heard.

Young Joc has been reportedly spotted with a fly stripper named Kai Lynn. Hmph…

Well, Floyd Mayweather has finally seen the right payday. It looks like he will come out of retirement to fight current top pound-for-pound fighter Manny Pacquiao. Before retiring, that was Money’s title.

Rumor has it, 50 Cent will make a movie called “The Organization,” based on a book about convicted Camden, NJ kigpin J.R and his best friend former Camden Mayor Milan.

I think everybody needs to be have equal rights and all that, but gay is not the new Black. I don’t know where people come up with these thoughts.

Rumor has it, that song isn’t K-Fed, but some racist jerk. We’ll see soon enough. K-Fed better make a move on this one.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony might be on the outs! She was recently seen without her husband and her wedding ring.

Blake Fielder-Civil, Amy’s wife, I mean husband, gave her drugs soon as he got out of jail. SMH at this destructicon.

RANDOM QUOTES

Common on how Obama will affect Hip-Hop (CNN):

“I think hip-hop artists will have no choice but to talk about different things and more positive things, and try to bring a brighter side to that because, even before Barack, I think people had been tired of hearing the same thing.”

Spider Loc comments further on his beef with Snoop Dogg (dubbcnn.com):

“Man, I don’t understand why a n#### thinks it’s cool to be clowning with my name in his mouth about some muthafuckin’ fighting. I don’t know and he don’t know no rapper that’s done touched on more rappers than me. A squabble ain’t s###, you can’t name another rapper that done put his hands on more entertainers than Spider Loc – not saying that’s something I’m proud of.”

Killer Mike tells AllHipHop.com about his deal with T.I.:

“I’ve worked very hard at making sure that I was able to not only live off the independent scene, but become a force in the independent rap music scene,” Killer Mike told AllHipHop.com. “Tip is encouraging me to be a business man, and he’s encouraging the efforts I’ve already put forth. This is an industry of slaves and sharecroppers. And most people just try to either enslave you or make you a sharecropper. And sharecropping, it ain’t perfect, but it’s a lot more noble than slavery. I’ll be happy to work the whole field as long as I can own a small piece or make a profit.”

Beyonce tells ‘em how she feels…:

“I grew up upper-class. Private school. My dad had a Jaguar. We’re African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we’re like the Jacksons. But I didn’t have parents using me to get out of a bad situation.”

Soulja Boy to Charles Hamilton:

“Maybe he should f**k with Mario or something.” See the video below…damn. Soulja Boy is funny! Apparently Charles said something about comparisons to him and Souljie.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY

This is the funniest fail ever. This dude made a song called “I’m Gay (For Gilbert Arenas).” Gil is going to have to answer a few questions on this.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

The Governor of Illinois has been arrested as he attempted to get money. SMH. Gov. Rod Blagojevich was and formally charged with conspiring to get financial benefits through his authority to fill the vacancy left by Barack Obama. This man allegedly tried to SELL the seat Obama left as he goes on to be president. The Gov. is the one that can appoint the vacant Senate position. That man didn’t watch the wire, because they got him on simple wiretaps in the 76-page FBI affidavit. Dude is a 51-year-old Democrat. He basically attempted to swindle money out of various non-profits and getting his wife on corporate boards to get her paid as well. I hope this doesn’t mess with Obama or that Obama isn’t somehow in this mess.

COMMON GETS HIS POP, LOCK AND ROBOT ON

Even though his new CD is a lil’ odd to me, its good to see he’s still got some of that old b-boy in his soul.

KNOCKOUT NATION: Pacquiao Pounds De La Hoya!Hatton-Mayweather Next? Mosley’s Steroids, Freddie Roach

Pacquiao Breaks De La Hoya’s Will to Fight

You’ve heard the sage boxing adage for decades now, that a good big man always beats a good little man. Well, lightweight titlist Manny Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 KOs) is an all time great little man, and an unsuspecting Oscar De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) found that out last Saturday (December 6) in spectacular fashion after being brutalized to an 8th round TKO.

The size disparity was quickly forgotten in the 1st round as Pacquiao kept De La Hoya from getting his punches set by constantly giving his larger opponent angles. The Filipino star exploded after a quiet first minute with a signature straight left followed by a flurry combination. De La Hoya fired back with a decent right to the body, but was met with more straight lefts.

The Golden Boy sought to assert himself in round 2 and started off the stanza with a lead right hand. Pacquiao returned fire with a hard right hook before easily circling away from De La Hoya’s jab and left hook.

Determined to land his eye-catching flurries, the Golden Boy stalked forward with a flurry to the body before getting strafed with a straight right-left combination from Pacquiao, followed by another left and a thudding uppercut.

The blistering speed barrage from the PacMan began to show its effects on Oscar’s face, which now sported a swelling left eye.

Round 3 started off with Pac again introducing De La Hoya’s face to his straight left.

Confused and wary of getting cracked again, De La Hoya remained in defense/counter mode for the first half of the round.

Later, De La Hoya pinned Pacquiao against the ropes and landed a hard body shot, his best punch of the night thus far.

To De La Hoya’s dismay, Pacquiao smiled at the punch and clipped the Golden Boy with another lead straight left and then a right hook to the body.

Through 4 rounds, De La Hoya had not won a single round and looked sluggish and lethargic against Pacquiao’s speed and power. More alarming for De La Hoya’s corner was that the Filipino icon’s superb use of feints, punch slipping, and lateral movement had taken away De La Hoya’s best weapon, his left hook.

Rounds 5 and 6 brought more pain to the pride of East LA.

Pacquiao’s combinations were now landing at nearly 60%.

Pacquiao easily landed triple jabs and his straight left hand could not miss to the head or body.

De La Hoya’s touted size advantage just meant a bigger target to Pacquiao, who mercilessly snapped De La Hoya’s head back with every left hand he threw.

By the 7th, the crowd murmurs between the wild “Pacquiao” chants confirmed that many saw this fight not lasting the distance.

De La Hoya could no longer take his opponent’s combinations, and was knocked back by jabs and straight lefts into a corner.

Smelling blood, Pacquiao punished Oscar with his full arsenal of power shots. De La Hoya attempts to rope-a-dope the shots were futile, and referee Tony Weeks surveyed the massacre closely for a sign he needed to step in.

A sharp left to the body almost did it, but De La Hoya stumbled and held on just long enough to finish the round.

Pacquiao continued his relentless assault in the deciding round, kicking off the 8th with a barrage of body shots. Oscar feebly responded with a lead right, which only made the Filipino blast him into a corner with straight lefts and right hooks. Nearly helpless, De La Hoya almost went down again as the PacMan rained down accurate combinations to the head and body. Again, it was a timely bell that saved De La Hoya from more punishment.

In the corner, the Golden Boy responded to his trainer “Nacho” Beristain by stating in Spanish “I have nothing.”

That was all the veteran trainer needed to hear to call off the beating, and Oscar De La Hoya’s last fight as boxing’s top draw was over.

In the post-fight interview De La Hoya conceded that Freddie Roach had been right all along about him not being able to pull the trigger. In addition, Oscar now realizes retirement faces him.

“I’m not shocked because at this stage, when you face a great fighter like Manny, it’s almost expected,” De La Hoya admitted. “I worked hard and trained hard, but in the gym it’s a whole different story. My heart still wants to fight, but when you don’t respond physically, what can you do? I have to be smart and think about my future plans.”

Since this was a shocking ending that proved the majority of critics and fans wrong, many will rush to rationalize this beating as a result of Oscar being completely shot. Others will seek to champion, and argue it was the Filipino’s skill that made Oscar look like damaged goods. The truth of the matter is that the outcome was a combination of both.

Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach was clear that he would not have let this fight happen if Oscar hadn’t slipped so much. In his last bout, De La Hoya was repeatedly hit flush and swelled up by light punching Stevie Forbes. Also alarming was the fact Forbes was able to take Oscar’s punches, many times cleanly, without going down.

On Pacquiao’s end, his speed and torrid pace contributed greatly to Oscar looking as bad as he did. When faced against the PacMan, many elite fighters become reluctant to throw after tasting his stinging straight left, and his unpredictable combination punching. The grim acceptance seen on De La Hoya’s face and his body language has also been viewed from Pacquiao victims Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales.

In the end, Manny Pacquiao proved one boxing adage correct…speed kills. And with it, he adds another Mexican legend’s scalp to his resume.

Floyd Mayweather or Ricky Hatton?

Two blockbuster matchups await Pacquiao in 2009 in “retired” former pound for pound kingpin Floyd Mayweather and 140 pound RING champ Ricky Hatton.

Both fights would not only be needed financial blockbusters for boxing’s image, but also action packed fights (when has a Pacquiao fight not been?).

In Hatton, Pacquiao would have a dominant champion who would come straight at him with many defensive liabilities to exploit. However, Hatton’s underrated footwork would close the gap on Manny’s deadly mid-range game and cause many nasty toe-to-toe exchanges on the inside. All in all, Hatton presents a very exciting matchup.

In Mayweather, Pacquiao would face a trickier fighter but also a more compelling back story.

Mayweather would be coming out of retirement undefeated to face the man that’s succeeded him as the pound for pound best in the world. Already, the public is buzzing about how much better Pacquiao’s performance was against De La Hoya (ignoring the fact that the Pretty Boy fought that contest at a ridiculous weight of 154 pounds). Plus, their legitimate contrasting personalities make for the perfect subplot for casual fans.

Mayweather’s time away from the ring (which would be close to two years by the time this fight could be made) would work against him. Money May’s timing would be rusty, a tool that would be his best asset against Pacquiao. The pound for pound #1 would represent the fastest fighter Floyd has ever faced.

During camp, Freddie Roach remarked that a dominant Pacquiao victory would entice Mayweather out of retirement. Roach further stated that if they could come to terms that fight would be at 140 pounds, a great weight for both men. Unfortunately, Pacquiao is promoted by Bob Arum, who is still engaged in a bitter feud with Mayweather, his former star fighter.

“Let him (Pacquaio) celebrate Christmas, the New Year, and the birth of his new baby. Then we’ll talk business,” a non-committal Arum stated at the post-fight conference.

Who would you rather see Manny Pacquiao face in the next 12 months?

Mosley Steroid Use Verified By Federal Testimony

As Shane Mosley prepares for a guaranteed war on January 24 against Antonio Margarito, the persistent steroid accusations that cloud his career have now resurfaced.

According to the New York Daly News, just released sealed documents from the infamous BALCO drug case detail Mosley admitting to steroid use.

In Mosley’s 2003 grand jury testimony, the veteran star testified that he injected himself with EPO, a performance enhancing drug right before the rematch with Oscar De La Hoya. At the time, many were suspicious of Mosley’s ripped physique that disappeared in his very next fight against Winky Wright.

For most, this has been the worse kept secret in boxing. Everyone loves Mosley due to his affable nature, and so far he seems to be getting a pass for this shameful indiscretion.

At the least, the De La Hoya rematch should be changed to a “no contest.” Unlike other sports, you don’t “play” boxing. It is a savage contest of wills that leaves lingering mental and physical damage, and in some cases ends lives. Mosley’s steroid use inevitably upped the risk of him seriously hurting his opponent due to an inhuman advantage.

Hopefully, BALCO’s fall marked Shane’s last trip to the clinic.

Williams Walks Down Phillips, Arreola Survives Shootout

Who wants Paul Williams (36-1, 27 KOs)? There still won’t be anyone answering that question anytime soon, as The Punisher put a massive body beating induced stoppage on wily veteran Verno Phillips (42-11-1) to pick up the WBO junior middleweight title on November 27.

Early on, Phillips found success launching lunging counter hooks onto the lanky Williams from the outside. While rattled occasionally, Williams promptly focused on raking Phillips to the body, particularly with painful looking right hooks to the kidney and liver.

An accidental headbutt opened a bad, gushy cut above Williams’ right eye. However, Williams was unfazed and went back to strafing Phillips to the body in rounds 3 and 4, and knocking him back with long jabs and straight lefts.

Williams continued the heavy punishment in round 6, now dropping hooks on the inside to the head and body. Phillips now began to slow and show the effects of the damage. A chopping left hand stunned Phillips who was knocked around the ring by power punches to end the round.

Round 7 saw Williams now clip Phillips with repeated uppercuts on the inside. Phillips came back strong with his own haymaker hooks, but the steam of those punches were gone due to the consistent body work from Williams.

The deciding round 8 had Williams continuing business as usual with his stabbing right hook to the body. To punctuate the stanza, Williams delivered a triple right hook combo to the head and body which caused Phillips to stumble around the ring. Back in the Phillip’s corner, the referee and ringside doctor determined Phillips had suffered enough, and called off the contest before the 9th round.

This win gives Williams 3 consecutive knockouts in 3 different weight classes: welterweight (Carlos Quintana), middleweight (Andy Kolle), and junior-middleweight (Verno Phillips). Expect there to be considerable demand for the winner of Margarito-Mosley in January to step up and face the Punisher. If that fight cannot be secured, he can look at possible matchups with junior middleweight titlist in Vernon Forrest (WBC).

In the opener, a flabby Chris Arreola (26-0, 23 KOs) survived a wakeup call knockdown to score an exciting KO over power-punching Travis Walker (28-2, 22 KOs).

Arreola was content to work behind a peek-a-boo defense in the first round, mostly letting Walker flail away with power shots  while he languished against the ropes. In the second, the Mexican-American was dropped to his knees with an accurate straight right hand. Stunned but still aware, Arreola wisely took the 8 count and came back to drop Taylor twice in the round with haymaker hooks on the inside.

Arreola went right in for the kill in round 3. A counter left hook sent Taylor crashing into a corner, prompting referee Jose Cobian to call the fight off without a count.

The bout was a IBF title eliminator, and Arreola in the post-fight interview promised to come in much better shape should he get the call against champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Hopefully he will, because the young, undefeated contender will have to show 10 times the ability he showcased this past Saturday to even stand a chance against Klitschko.

EPMD: We Mean Business (Album Review)

It’s been over ten years since New York veterans EPMD last released a full length album and much has changed in the Rap game during their long-layoff. However, the dynamic duo are known for their funky, party-starting production and interesting wordplay, so it’s good to see that after such a long dry spell, Sermon and Parrish are back for more of what they do best.

Yet with their usual rolodex of friends (Redman, Method Man, Keith Murray) to help them spread the message that they’re not messing around; their business practices need to be revamped.

Continuing with the “business” theme which is a constant in all of their album titles, We Mean Business starts off strong with an assist from none other than Raekwon on “Puttin’ Work In”.

Over frenetic, stabbing synths and bass squelches, Sermon and Parrish serve up a slab of danger with help in the kitchen from the Chef on the album opener. Wu finger-prints all over this one, from the classic “Psycho Killer / Norman Bates” ODB soundbite and this lyrical nod to the Wu, “Cause I stay razor-sharp / Like my name was RZA”.

Other noteworthy cuts on the release are the Def Squad reunion track “Yo” featuring Redman, the Teddy Riley produced “Listen Up”, and the contagious “Run It” featuring the legendary KRS-One. The 9th Wonder-laced “Left For Dead” featuring the under-rated Skyzoo is reload worthy as well.

Sadly EPMD offer nothing ground-breaking on this album (“Blow”, “Bac Stabbers”) and we definitely could have done without another “Jane” track. Additionally the over saturation of guest artists provided too much of a crutch for them to lean on after such a long layoff.

It almost seems as if they weren’t confident enough to rely on each other more on this release and fell into the standard Rap-pitfall of loading your release with a lot of guests to take the heat off yourself.

While these hiccups do not totally undermine, We Mean Business to the point that the listener is disappointed. Sermon and Parrish nonetheless, manage to deliver the goods after such a long time on the shelf, and prove that they are back in the Hip-Hop market and they’re ready to do some business. It’s not big business mind you, but it does have value.

Killer Mike Links With T.I.’s Grand Hustle; Future Plans Detailed

While Killer Mike has confirmed that he is in the final stages of negotiating a partnership between his Grind Time imprint and T.I.’s Atlanta-based Grand Hustle Entertainment, he wants to reassure fans that this is by no means a sign that he has abandoned the independent scene.

On the contrary, he expects his new situation, which should be finalized in early 2009, to make him a greater asset to thriving Atlanta scene, which has supported him over the years.

Killer Mike’s confirmation comes just days after T.I. shared the pending agreement with MTV.

Though the full details are still being ironed out, Mike explained that the new arrangement, which he sees as a direct result of his close relationship with T.I. and the work he has put in since going independent in 2007, puts him in the best position to further his career ambitions.

I’ll be happy to work the whole field as long as I can own a small piece or make a profit.

“Tip has been in the exact position I am in,” added Mike. “One of the most distinct memories I have of him is me and him in an Escalade. And he was like, at the time Bad Boy wanted him and Atlantic wanted him. But Atlantic gave him the opportunity to not only be a huge star, which Bad Boy would have done, but also to be a businessman. And Tip is giving me the same opportunity. Not many people have their ego in check enough to offer you that kind of opportunity.”

The offer presented by Grand Hustle as it stands extends solely to Killer Mike as a Grind Time artist.

The first project to be released through the new deal will be the highly anticipated 16 In The Kitchen, which Mike has always promised would stand apart from the various recordings he has presented to fans, since his departure from Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon label nearly two years ago.

“The goal of any business is to get the business to a good point to sell it,” Mike explained. “One of the smaller goals before that is to be able to expand. What Grind Time is gonna be able to do brand-wise and me as an artist is gonna grow by leaps and bounds, just by me being associated with Grand Hustle and Tip. But not only because of his name but because of the work that we put in and the tools I’ll now have in place.”

Killer Mike is also working on two compilation projects: Underground Atlanta, rumored to feature buzzworthy artists like OJ Da Juiceman, former BME artists Princess and Bohagon and Yung Ralph; and the forthcoming Skulls and Roses, which will bring together street-influenced R&B artists and the rappers who relate similar tales.

Both projects will be released through Grind Time’s current partnership with SMC Recordings and Fontana Distribution.

First up will be Underground Atlanta, due out in March 2009.

Reluctant to deem himself the leader of the Underground Atlanta movement, or even to call the group of artists he’s been working with a movement per se, Killer Mike does want to open the world’s eyes to what Atlanta natives have to offer.

“Atlanta has a very eclectic ear,” Killer Mike said. “I don’t want people to get my city misconstrued. I want to be a catalyst for that music to keep coming out in an organized way. I’d like to give this music its proper shine. I ain’t cute as Tip or as wavy as Max B. I don’t have the swagger of Jim Jones. I don’t have the cool of Jay-Z or the weird loveable-ness of Dre or Wayne, but I think that people sense a certain realness about me and a certain integrity and I think people relate.”

UPDATE: DMX Arrested In Scott Storch’s Miami, Florida Mansion

A woman in Georgia tipped Florida told authorities about DMX’s whereabouts in order to collect the $5000 dollar reward for information leading to his capture.

The troubled rapper, who is reportedly in rehabilitation attempting to kick what many say is a long-time drug habit, is wanted for animal abuse, drug possession and theft of services charges, for defrauding a local clinic of $7,500 in services.

The rapper must post a $120,000 cash bond, or surrender his freedom.

Unauthorized Bobby Brown Biography Hits Stores Today

The tumultuous life of Grammy award-winning singer Bobby Brown is now the subject of The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But…, a new “unauthorized biography” of the artist’s life.

Initially, the book was a private memoir for Brown to reflect on his volatile 20-plus years in the entertainment industry.

Author Derrick Handspike, a longtime friend and co-writer of Andre Rison’s autobiography, urged the singer to seriously consider transforming his memoir into a no frills autobiography.

The duo’s work resulted in a controversial 233-page intimate look into Brown’s life.

The book chronicles Brown’s life from his childhood, rise to stardom with New Edition, drug problems, relationships, and his explosive 14-year marriage to Whitney Houston.

While excited about the project, Handspike revealed that Brown inexplicably dropped out in the 11th hour, due to concerns about how his family would be affected by the illicit stories contained in the memoir.

“I had heard rumors that Whitney was trying to stop this book from coming out and that she was going to do whatever she had to do to keep it from being published,” Handspike states in book’s foreword. “I then started to wonder if Bobby had been influenced by Whitney not to go through with it. Whitney has been known, is known and will always be known as having a major influence on him. For whatever reason, Bobby, his lawyer and manager were not in a hurry to finalize the agreed upon book release deadlines!”

Despite this setback, Handspike made several changes to the book which legally allowed the go ahead for the project to be published, even without Brown’s final support.

“With all the hard work, time, and dedication to the project and money spent out of my pocket preparing this memoir, I decided to make the necessary changes to release it, Handspike stated. “I made the changes to revise the book so it reads as a biography in lieu of an autobiography.”

Bobby Brown was one of the music industry’s biggest stars throughout the 80s and early 90s.

After departing from the multi-platinum group New Edition in 1986, he scored a massive hit with his seminal 1988 sophomore album Don’t Be Cruel, which went 7X platinum and is a one of the best-selling New Jack Swing LPs of all time.

Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But… is published by Down South Books and available now at all major book retailers and www.downsouthbooks.com.

In related news, Brown has revealed that he is part of a new group named Heads of State featuring former New Edition group members Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill.

Busta Apologizes For ‘Arab Money’ Misunderstanding

Only hours after expressing his outrage over Busta Rhymes’ controversial song “Arab Money,” Iraqi-born rapper The Narcicyst told AllHipHop.com that he received a personal phone call from Busta himself last night (December 8), apologizing for the misunderstanding created by the song.

According to Narcicyst, the two rappers spent nearly half an hour on the phone discussing Busta’s original intent in making the song, which the veteran rapper says was meant to pay homage to Arab culture.

The Narcicyst, whose family fled Iraq years ago after they were displaced by the political turmoil said he came to understand that there may have been a bigger culprit in Busta’s lyrical misstep.

“It was a thorough explanation and he was a very respectful man,” the Narcicyst told AllHipHop.com. “He explained to me his experience as an African-American man in the States and [it] seemed to me as an experience that I can correlate as an Arab being in the Middle East and having been displaced from my nation and seeing my country being bombarded in the media, being misrepresented.”

According to Narcicyst, Rhymes revealed that he didn’t purposely disrespect Arab culture and that representing it “in a positive light” was important to his fellow rapper.

“He also acknowledged that it was definitely something that spun out of control,” Narcicyst continued. “You know, when you put out a song, you can’t really put out an essay on why you put out the song. And it’s always hard to explain to the masses.”

While some YouTube posts of the song and/or video have already been removed from the popular website, there is no word on when or if the controversial song will be officially removed from rotation.

The song is already banned in the U.K., where award winning DJ Steve Sutherland was temporarily suspended by Galaxy FM, for playing the song.

As a result of Busta’s apology and The Narcicyst has also agreed to pull his response to the song, a track titled “The Real Arab Money.”

“This is an example of how two people can come together and create something bigger than them,” The Narcicyst concluded. “I’m a strong believer in truth and breaking stereotypes down and not allowing people to box you in. And this whole experience has been a huge eye opener for me. This is what Hip-Hop is about. Two brothers from another mother can come to a peaceful and just conclusion for all sides.”

Gillie Da Kid: Mr. Philadelphia

As the self-proclaimed King of Philly, Gillie Da Kid may seem to be enduring an arduous reign. He has survived multiple gun shot

wounds, has experienced sordid beefs and has recovered from bogus record deals.

A candid chuckle reflects his resilient perspective when he says,

“I’ve never had a bad day in my life. You know, I just keep things moving.”

Gillie is in ceaseless motion; his hustle is as constant as

his breathing. “I come from a single-parent household. My mom worked two jobs,”

he reveals. “That’s just what I come from, nothing. But, when you come from

nothing the only way you’re gonna

get to something is with hard work.”

Da Kid’s latest mixtape, I Am Philly,

was just released on Figgas 4 Life Ent. and features the likes of Ace McCloud and Don

Cannon. Loving music too much to ever renounce his musical throne, Gillie

explains what circumstances led to him defecting from the anticipated

“Brotherly Love” concert that’s being organized by Beanie Sigel and Nike’s ACG

store. Amongst other topics.

AllHipHop.com: Why

aren’t you appearing at the “Brotherly Love” Concert?

Gillie Da Kid: Because, I’m shooting a movie called King of the Avenue in Puerto Rico. I

just got the call from Ving Rhames

and the director [Ryan Combs]. I have to fly out on Tuesday to start filming

the movie. I had every the intentions on performing next Thursday. Unfortunately

the schedules conflicted and I had to exclude [myself] and start filming for

this movie next week.

AllHipHop.com: Was

it purely last minute scheduling; it wasn’t any disrespect towards anyone?

Gillie Da Kid:  It’s

my hectic schedule… When I got the call about the whole Nike situation and the

whole concert…I agreed on it right off the back. They presented it to me and it

was something for peace on the streets. And I already got a lot to do around here with the “Put Down the Gun” campaign. I go around to

the schools and talk to the kids. I already do a lot of things in that

perspective around Philadelphia.

Get Down on Da Ground – Gillie Da Kid

AllHipHop.com: Given

this scheduling conflict, do you anticipate any shenanigans to occur this

Sunday at your show with Cassidy at Transit nightclub? [Ed. Note: the show occurred Dec. 7, 2008]

Gillie

Da Kid

Me and Cassidy [are] good. We sat down, we talked, we good. It’s

going to be a beautiful situation. It’s just going to be a big concert. I’m

bringing a lot of artists out from Philadelphia with me. I know it’s not going

to be no type of shenanigans or no foolishness from my side. It should be all

love; a beautiful situation.

AllHipHop.com: What’s

your opinion about veteran MCs embracing the upcoming or unsigned talent within

Hip-Hop? Can MCs weather these slumping sales?

Gillie Da Kid:  To

me, the main reason why the industry is down on record sales is because of the

economy. But, another reason got a lot to do with these record labels. They signing

these motherf**kers that ain’t got no story. They don’t

have nothing about them; all they got is a hot record…

But, they’re gonna make a

million dollars in ringtones; they’re comfortable with that.

But everybody that got the

streets, everybody that has a story, everybody that has a following sells

records. Jeezy doesn’t have a problem selling

records, Rick Ross doesn’t have a problem selling records, T.I.

doesn’t have a problem selling records. Name any artist that has the streets,

they don’t have a problem selling records because they have a fanbase.

AllHipHop.com: Is

it essential for the public to be able to reach past the façade that’s created

for the artists by the record companies?

Gillie Da Kid:  You

gotta be able to identify with the artist. When we

were coming up, we listened to Biggie because we felt like we could identify with

him. I was on my way to school, I’m in the mirror, I’m

rapping. I felt like I could identify with him. Now, it’s no identification

[with MCs]… Yeah, you can sell ringtones but when his album come out how many

copies is he gonna sell 5,000? I sell 5,000 mixtapes. I sell 10,000 mixtapes

every time I drop a mixtape, 15,000 mixtapes in Philadelphia alone. I got over 35 million views

on YouTube. There’s a reason why I have close to 4 million plays on MySpace,

because I’m a hustler.

AllHipHop.com: Is

it okay for MCs to employ poetic license; speaking of things that they’ve never

experienced?

Gillie Da Kid: I mean, it’s all entertainment, so you know.

That’s 95% of these artists out here, speaking on stuff they never seen before.

AllHipHop.com: While

you were ghostwriting for Cash Money, did you ever envision Lil Wayne getting

as hot as he is now?

Gillie Da Kid: At the end of the day that’s a situation that

God put Wayne in. I’m happy for him. Me, I can’t hate on no n***a. All I do is

try to create my own lane.

Gillie Da Kid: Do you feel any sorta way about the supposed Hot Boy reunion?

AllHipHop.com:

Nah, nuh uh. I f**ks with everybody; I f**ks with Juvie, I f**ks with B.G., I f**ks with Turk. So, you know, it’s all love from me.

Them n****s need to go get they money.

AllHipHop.com: Recently

a major record company announced that their digital sales have surpassed their

retail sales. With that being said, what’s the most useful digital outlet that

you use to help promote your music?

Gillie Da Kid:  Man,

it’s so many websites and the Internet is so big. You know what I’m

saying? It’s kinda like, it’s a plus and it’s a

negative. Now artists can get hot from the Internet. But now the Internet has

provided artists [a platform] and now it’s not about talent anymore. Like this

Dirty Rik kid, that artist just

feel like he can use the Internet to get hot. And you got someone who’s

creating a buzz on something that doesn’t really [have] anything to do with talent.

The Internet helps you and it kinda

kills you. Because, at the same time now people aren’t going to stores, they’re

just downloading.

AllHipHop.com: Will

you be releasing any more PSAs via YouTube?

Gillie Da Kid:  With

that little f*** boy, the only reason why I did it was because he mentioned my

wife name in a rap. If he wouldn’t have mentioned my wife I probably wouldn’t

have said nothing about him. He’s not relevant… You’re

disrespecting me and you have 20,000 views in over a week and a half. That’s because

motherf**kers don’t care

about what you’re saying… If you disrespect someone in my

family or somebody that I have something to do very closely with, then I take

s**t like that personal. The actual rapping part of it, none of that

really bothered me. His credibility to my credibility is not even close.

AllHipHop.com: Once

he disrespected your wife, that’s when it became personal?

Gillie

Da Kid

Yeah, when you mentioned my wife on some rap s**t. And at the end

of the day I would have just seen him and slapped the s**t out of him. [It’s] like

he’s in hiding. I haven’t seen him in three years.

AllHipHop.com: What’s

the status of Major Figgas?

Gillie Da Kid:  The

Figgas is still on and popping. You feel what I’m

saying? It’s just that right now we’re all concentrating our efforts on Gillie.

Gillie’s gonna kick the door

in and then we’re gonna come with the Figgas album.

AllHipHop.com: You

mentioned earlier that you’re working on the movie King of the Avenue with Ving Rhames. Is your part in the movie based on life reflecting

art or art reflecting life?

Gillie Da Kid:  Honestly,

to be all the way honest with you, I just think it’s a blessing from God. I

honestly feel in my heart feel that God knows that I work hard for everything

that I have. Just by the way me and Ving

met. He saw me on a DVD, he was out in Boston, he was filming a movie, and he

just so happened to walk into a store and buy a bunch of DVDs. The first DVD he

put in, I was on it. He seen me just off a DVD and decided, “I need to contact

this kid.” He felt as though this kid has talent that goes beyond rap.

AllHipHop.com: Was

that Marijuana High?

Gillie Da Kid:  Nah,

this was a DVD called Ghetto Report.

And for a guy that’s worth as much money as Ving Rhames to call Black Child, Black Child called my dad… My dad

gave him the number [and] Ving called me the next

day. And we talked on the phone everyday since that day; which has probably

been close to a year ago. I talked to him everyday. He flew me out to California, he gave me a house for $2.5 million. To me it’s

just a blessing…that I’m around somebody that has that type of power and that’s

not intimidated by me. I’m a presence and I’m gonna be me no matter who I’m around.

A lot of times when you’re dealing with the music industry

you’re dealing with these CEOs who are also rappers, when they get a guy like

me in front of them, who’s charismatic, who has a presence; they’re intimidated

by it. I was happy with the fact that Ving wasn’t intimidated, he was accepting to it.

He’s in a situation where I’m trying to get to.

AllHipHop.com: Are

you an MC that plans to retire from the mic to take up acting?

Gillie Da Kid:  As

of right now I got three movie roles. I got a movie I’m about to shoot King of the Avenue. And

there’s another movie called Thug

that I shoot, uh, I think in the beginning of February. I’m really trying to

get into the acting heavy. But, that was always my goal with the rapping, to

put my albums out and do me and eventually cross over. You can act until you’re

1,000 years old.

AllHipHop.com: Is

there anything else you’d like to elaborate on?

Gillie Da Kid:  Man,

I just want to tell people check me out on my MySpace, www.myspace.com/figga4lifeent, you know what I’m saying?  Shoot me a comment, show your boy some love. I got new mixtapes out and I’m coming to a hood near you.

Violator All-Star DJ’s Drop K-Swift Dedication Album

Violator All-Star DJs and M.I.A. are partnering with Koch Entertainment to celebrate and support the release of the late K-Swift’s Greatest Hits album.

K-Swift, real name Khia Edgerton, died in a tragic pool accident on July 21.

A growing star, Swift at the time of her death had the one of the top rated radio shows in the Baltimore market, a wildly popular mixtape series entitled The Jump Off and was an artist on Unruly Records.

The day of her death, Swift had signed a major deal to nationally distribute the series.

The new album drew the attention of international pop star M.I.A., who decided to temporarily suspend her music “retirement” to host the album.

As an artist whose music owes a large debt to Baltimore’s club music scene, M.I.A. felt obligated to contribute as much as she could to honor K-Swift’s legacy.

Violator DJs Scrap Dirty and AB Butler will do in store promotional appearances in New York, Chicago, Baltimore, and Philadelphia to promote the album.

For Dirty, his participation is the manifestation of a personal vow to keep K-Swift’s name alive in music.

“This project is dear to me and I think this will keep my lil’ sister K-Swift’s legacy alive,” Dirty explained to AllHipHop.com. “I will make sure that everyone will continue to feel her presence from here to eternity.”

Butler adds that in K-Swift, Baltimore has also lost a positive face and champion of their distinctive club music scene.

“Swift was very influential in the music area and definitely was the face of club music,” he explained. “I can’t begin to say how much we will miss her. I was an honor to have her as one of our own.”

A portion of the albums sales will go to K-Swfit’s non-profit seminary for inner city youth seeking scholarships in broadcast journalism and entertainment fields.

K-Swift’s Greatest Hits is available now at all music retail outlets.
