Mobb Deep’s Havoc Returns With ‘The Hidden Files’

Mobb Deep member Havoc is gearing up to release The Hidden Files, his latest solo album and debut release for Koch Records.

According to representatives for Koch, the new album will be produced by Havoc himself and longtime collaborator The Alchemist.

While details about the album remain under wraps, fans of Mobb Deep will be treated to at least one guest appearance from imprisoned Mobb Deep member Prodigy, who is serving a 3 ½ year jail sentence in upstate New York, over gun possession charges.

Havoc, a native of Queensbridge, is noted for his lyrical ability as well as his production skills, having produced the majority of Mobb Deep’s last seven albums, as well as tracks for Nas, Jadakiss, Lil Kim, The Game, LL Cool J, 50 Cent, Foxy Brown and others.

The Hidden Files is the follow up to Havoc’s solo debut The Kush, which was released in September of 2007 on Nature Sounds Records.

The Hidden Files is due in stores in 2009.

AHHA’s Best of 2008: The Trials of TQ – The Ca$h Money Story

Original Post Date: May 13, 2008I think it was ‘99… The Lakers are in the playoffs. I could give a f**k about anything but Purple and Gold right now. I just got a funky a** TV, and I’m stuck on the 405 in traffic trying to get home and puff me one. The first quarter just ended, and I’m watching it in my car. Ni**as is blowing up my phone like it’s Christmas… “Dawg are you listening to the radio?” I’m like, “No ni**a I’m watching’ the Lakers! Why the f**k aren’t you?” My homie tells me that “Them Cash Money ni**as are up at the station calling you out!” Calling me out? I thought it was some beef, but who the hell is Cash Money? “Anyway, hit me after the game pimp…”That’s when I get a two-way from my dawg Julio G. He’s like, “Man if you around you need to come to the station. These N.O. cats Baby and Slim wanna meet you.” Now this is the West Coast. Outside of Outkast and Master P, the South wasn’t bustin’ a grape out here at the time. Now don’t get me wrong, I love South music, just not as much as I loved Shaq and Kobe. Julio is an OG though. Plus he knows the game. If this ni**a texts me and says that I need to link with somebody, I’m doing it. So I did it…I turned around and went back to Hollywood to meet Baby and Slim at their hotel… This could be a sign…Yeah it was…The f**kin’ Lakers lost. Punk a** LAPD gives me a ticket for tinted windows. The valet at the hotel pulls all up on the curb, and all I hear is my Anterras scraping the concrete. When the Birdman pulls up, I’m outside cussing out the whole staff at the Mondrian…Dude got a kick outta that. Him and ol’ Rusty persuade me to chill out, and we walk into the lobby. I’m still beefy tho…Baby and Slim pull me over to a corner and we talk music. They tell me how I’m hot like fire in New Orleans, and I need to get down there and promote. Baby says and I quote, “Lil Daddy, you my favorite artist! That ‘Bye Bye Baby’ sh*t is way too gangsta for R&B… Can you rap?” I’m like, “Homie, I can’t even wrap a gift!” They tell me that they listen to my album so much that the CD warps, and they have to get a new one in every city. I’m watching how all their crew is giving me nods as they walk by. “These ni**as really feelin’ ya boy”… I’m kinda surprised. Baby tells me that they are about to start shooting their first movie and they want me on the soundtrack. I’m with it! We all exchange numbers and I bounce… But not before I give that hotel a bill for my f**king rim…Over the next couple of weeks, me and dude communicate a lot. Baby is a real Laker hater, so we had reason to talk a bunch of sh*t. We always had a little rivalry goin’ on from the beginning and that got us off to a good start. Before long I was going out on the road with them, doing shows, and helping them shut down malls across the US. Then we finally got in the studio… That’s when sh*t really got deep… I did a joint for them on the Baller Blockin soundtrack and I wouldn’t charge them. I’m old school dawg. I believe in the barter system. Let’s just say you owe me big homie… What else you got? What did I tell him that for? For the next two weeks, we did song after song after song. Juvenile, BG, Turk, Hot Boys, Big Tymers, you name it… almost. Seems he was keeping this one little pitbull in his back pocket and wasn’t letting him out. I think it’s time to pull one of those favors…I was just getting ready to start my second album. The Black Suits were calling in everybody – Pharrell, Ja Rule, Warren G, Bone Thugs, E-40, Destiny’s Child, Ghostface and Capadonna, etc… I had my eyes and ears set on one cat… Baby assured me that I wasn’t putting out another album without him on it, so when he came to NY to do the joint, I popped the question. “Can I get Lil Weezy on this album?” The ni**a hesitated, but he couldn’t say no. He owed me. We flew to New Orleans and went to the lab.Now we all know Baby is a showman. Never more than this particular night though. He always looked at his crew as an army. To watch them all in the studio, you’d call them the same, but to watch Lil Wayne do his thang, you knew this was Baby’s ace in the hole. Now I had hung with all the Hot Boys in the city on separate occasions for fun. Me and Juve would tear down the city when I was there. Me and BG would tear down the projects. Me and my ni**a lil Turk would beef ’cause I smoked too much weed, lol… Wayne was just a kid, and I wasn’t going to hang out at the high school, ya dig? The only time the whole crew was together was when we were working. I guess that should’ve been a red flag.It wasn’t. This lil ni**a came in the studio and listened to my record one time down while performing to himself in the mirror. He said to Baby, ”I’m ready.” He didn’t write sh*t down. He went in the studio and killed it with one take. My mouth dropped. Wayne came out the booth, listened, waited for Baby’s approval, waited for mine, and asked for a copy. I was shocked. I watched the lil’ dude leave out and hop in his yellow SLK. He had a chick in the car! The ni**a left it running!! I was done. Baby was cracking his side looking at my expression. That ni**a Wayne had a gift. I knew it and so did Baby…What I didn’t know was that Slim had been calling Sony trying to buy me out of my deal. “Giant” wanted me as an artist at all cost, but Sony was making money off me, and they weren’t trying to hear it. Meanwhile, my sales down South had doubled, and we had the Birdman to thank for that. It got to the point where I would come out in the middle of their show to do my song just ’cause Baby wanted to hear it! Word got back to Sony and they started to panic. They informed Slim that he’d be sued for tampering if he kept it up. So we had to come up with another plan. We met and he told me what was up. He told me that if I could get myself out of that deal, he had a much better one on the table… I’m saying to myself, “Is that possible?” I mean, regardless of the situation, I did have a helluva deal with Sony. I wasn’t selling that many records, but I was making a whole lotta cake… How could he beat that? Anyway, I listened like a dumba** and set about getting myself out of my deal… Plan B was in full effect.Little did I know that there was chaos in the CMR camp. The Hot Boys felt like their money was a little funny. Juve was the hottest ni**a on the planet, everybody wanted him on their record, and Baby refused. Seems the Birdman was Bird feedin’ ni**as, but they kept recruiting for him! Every time I talked to Juve, Doogie, or Turk, they would sweat me about signing to Cash Money. See these ni**as had love for Baby and Slim. Family type love. He should’ve done whatever to keep them boys happy. They would’ve rode for him ’til the wheels fell off, but greed is a muthaf**ka. Greed is why we can never get ahead. There was more than enough to go around, but ni**as f**ked it all up. What can you do with 50 whips? You spend most of your time on the road! When you get home, them sh*ts don’t even start! What’s the difference between an S Class and a Maybach? The 200 stacks that you can use buying Chevys for all your homies…Do u really need another $100,000 chain when you have two at home in the safe already? F**k No! I’d use that bread for more rooms on the road so my 70 ni**as ain’t gotta pile up six or eight to a room. Or maybe I could put it in my ni**as pockets so they ain’t gotta hit the block when we come home… Sh*t, it’s a whole lotta sh*t that ni**as can do with extra money. Ask Master P…Anyway, I flexed on Sony. I’m a G with the paperwork. I got myself outta that deal and made them pay me for it. I got into negotiations with Cash Money, and I figured that it would take a while. See, my lawyer had got his hands on a copy of Juve’s contract just to see what we were up against. It was some bullsh*t! A slave deal with a million holes in it. He made sure mine had two million. He said, “T, I do not advise you to do a deal with these cats, but since you’re gonna do it anyway, I want to make sure that it’s easy to get out of. It’s gonna take some time…” It took eight months. In the meantime, just to keep sh*t rolling, my lawyer got me a song deal with his father, Mr. Clive Davis at Arista. Soon after they wrote me a check, Mr. Davis left the company, and I was free and clear after turning in a couple of pop joints for LFO, N-Sync, and the UK supergroup, Anotha Level. Now that’s gangsta! I was still young. My lawyer knew that I was gonna jump at them Cash Money dollars, so he made it unnecessary. I wasn’t trippin’. When the deal gets done, I’ll be ready for work. He got it done right before Christmas… Ho, Ho, Ho muthaf**kas! The next call I got was from Baby. “It’s your turn, Homie!” “I need you by my side dawg!” I packed up my sh*t and bounced to New Orleans. Baby’s sister Kim picked me up from the airport. She had a bunch of keys and some bread for me. The most important thing she had for me was advice on how to deal with her little brother. See me and Kim was cool from the beginning. That’s my dawg! She was a real TQ fan, and I love her for that. She informed me that they called her brother “Baby” for obvious reasons and to always remember that. I did… It didn’t matter though.I’m a man. I’m always gonna be at least that. I had a career before I met CMR, and they was gonna respect that if nothing else. I stood up to Baby. He’d talk crazy to me, and I’d talk crazy back. He respected that and still does. I had my own sh*t. Whenever he’d get to trippin’, I’d be quick to say, “Man f**k you!” and leave Yokohama tracks in his driveway. N.O. was just like Compton. I could go anywhere by myself and it was love – pretty much. I wasn’t going to the Callio alone pimp… call me what you want! LOL! As long as I was at the studio or on the bus when I was supposed to be there, we’d laugh it off and split a bottle of Cris’… But where was everybody else? Where the f**k is BG? Nile? Turk? The ni**as that were responsible for me being here were not here. That I didn’t understand… Then Baby told me about his “expansion” plan. He was making deals for a Cash Money West headed by Mack 10. He was gonna sign Gillie the Kid outta Philly, and Boo and Gotti, Mikkey, and Strings from Chicago. Sounded great to me! Especially the Mack 10 part…  My one question remained. Where the f**k are the Hot Boys? I finally found out…And next week you will too…Stay tuned for the next installment “Break Up to Make Up.” This should be interesting.Check out TQ’s new album Paradise featuring Krayzie Bone, BG, Jagged Edge, Static Major and more in stores and on iTunes now! www.myspace.com/tqofficialsite

Hip-Hop Rumors: Yung Berg As “Jesus”? What Vixen s Burning? Ray-J and Whit Faking Lovers?

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

MY DAILY TWO CENTS

Follow me at Twitter. I’m kinda fun when I’m “on.” http://twitter.com/illseed

I’m taking it easy…

RAY J AND WHITNEY PLAYING WITH THE MEDIA?

I heard a crazy rumor from somebody that seems to know. I know some people that know some people and they insist that Ray and Whit are playing the paps for publicity. According to this rumor, Ray and Whitney are no couple and never have been. In rumor (as opposed to “in fact”), I heard that one of Ray’s artists and close friends under his Knockout label is actually Whitney’s goddaughter. That is how they met and how they found themselves in this bizarre situation. Basically the whole reason they are seen together is so the media will talk about it every time, since when they are alone, nobody really cares too much. That’s the rumor. On top of that, Perez Hilton even charged that Ray and Whit called their own paps to take pics of them coming off that plane. SMH.

BIZZY BONE AND 99 CENT TACOS

AH-HA! My homey Raymundo his me up last night after he left El Torito in Upland, CA. He was there to get some for 99 cent tacos and enjoy some karaoke. All of a sudden, Bone Thugs In Harmony walked in! He told me he recognized Bizzy Bone right away and then the other members. Anyway, they were getting crunk at the bar, and Bizzy was dancing around all crazy, he said. Bizzy noticed Raymundo was wearing an Obama shirt, and Biz gestured with his right fist pumped in the air, and said “Obama.” Bizzy got down on some 99 cent tacos, and was actually thumbing through the karaoke book! Bizzy doing karaoke!!! But, he didn’t do a song, and in fact there was a ‘baby mama’ there, tugging her kid around their crew, and eventually they all left. But I heard was dope to see some  legends out eating tacos…

YUNG BERG FIRES BACK

You know, Yung Berg took a tremendous “beating” this year, both physically and career wise. There are some good signs for 2009 though. It seems like Berg is ready to recover from the year that was 2008. According to my DJ homey (I don’t want to say his name, because he might get in trouble), Berg has taken a different stance.

1) He referenced himself as “Hip-Hop’s Lil’ Jesus”

2) He also stated that he suffered a “crucifixion throughout Hip-Hop.”

3) He says he could careless about the Transformer chain, he’s onto bigger jewelry.

4) I’m not going to fuel any of Berg’s beefs, because I don’t want to see anything happen to him. BUT, he said that certain people he’s beefing with are gonna get it Ne-Yo style! He didn’t use “Ne-Yo.”

5) He also spoke briefly on his up and coming reality show. Berg says it’s strictly for the ladies, and their searching for a station to pick-up the pilot.

6) And lastly, Berg says he wishes his bro (Cap1 or his dark skinned twin?) the best with his solo success, but said he doesn’t let anyone write his rhymes. I want his gun-bussin’, dark twin to come out.

GO TO THE DOCTORRRRRRRRR

You know in the game a lot of people are enamored by the glamorous and beautiful people in the world. And they forget…those beautiful bodies catch diseases like the ugly ones. ANYWAY, there is a popular vixen (not Superhead) that has burned a few dudes in Hip-Hop. Now, the problem is not so much how many people she burned but WHO. She basically burned a few key people in the rap game and basketball. NOW, from there those dudes slept with a slew of women. And the women and men are tracing it back to this one chick. Also, they are actually warning each other that they probably need to get to the Doctor, like Kool Moe Dee once said.

DIDDY THROWS A PARTY FOR KIM

This is a story I jacked from People magazine:

Diddy and Kim Porter have had a longtime on-again off-again romance – but the pair celebrated in style together when the music mogul threw an intimate birthday bash for her in West Hollywood Monday.

Nearly 30 guests, including Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo and husband Chris Ivery, co-star Sara Ramirez and reality TV’s Lisa Gastineau, gathered at Murano Restaurant & Lounge to celebrate Porter’s 38th birthday.

Porter – the mother of Diddy’s nearly 2-year-old twin girls and 10-year-old son – arrived fashionably late to the restaurant, which was filled festive with red balloons and streamers. The night’s soundtrack was a mix of old school 70s R&B prepared by Murano owner Sandy Sachs.

At one point in the evening, a guest tells PEOPLE, “The group serenaded Kim to Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday,” and then they presented her with a cake.”

While Diddy stuck to ginger ale at the party, the other guests sipped on a specialty lemon drop martini made with Ciroc vodka designed for the occasion. A four course tasting menu created by Executive Chef Luciano Sautto was served.

And the group had the whole place to themselves: Although the restaurant is usually closed on Monday, it was open just for the private party, which started at 8:30 p.m. and ended after midnight…

EPIC FAILS OF THE DAY

Laura Bush was thrown under the bus by husband Bush.

“I’m sure I’m going to lose a lot of weight, because Laura’s going to be the cook,” Bush said with his wife right there.

Simple as that. Fail.

FAIL No. 2

In Germany, Berlin to be exact, officials saved 1,500 parakeets from a measly two-room apartment. These birds were being groomed and basically held in captivity. A man just let them eat, poop and shed features all over the house and never cleaned up. The birds were taken to various animal shelters. Dude must have let the birds poop on his head when he was asleep. He may face charges.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

We have a problem Paw Paw, Mich. A heart was discovered at an area car wash and the damn thing was human-sized. They found it inside a car wash and the police recovered it. They took it to a vet, who didn’t know. They then took it to a heart specialist that said it was about the size of a human heart. He didn’t make a conclusive determination. They are going to take it to the CSI cats and really make it happen. But, they said they have to find the body if it does turn out to be a human heart. What is crazy is the car wash has had animal parts in the bay, but not human parts.

Wild Out Wednesday: Charles Hamilton Dissed, Royce Rocks, Scarface Is High Powered, Rick Ross & More

I been lax my dudes.  Year end and login problems are a b#### and a half.  I been hitting you with those Classic Clashes for the last couple weeks, and we got a doozy coming this Saturday, but I been delinquent on those Sick Sundays.

Fear not, I’ll be back on the grind this week but I’m here to get it in on a Wednesday with some pure flavor.  A little old, a little new, a couple exclusives, and a some general wholesome goodness

Enough of the jibber jabber, let’s get it in.

Ray Ca$h- The Return

Many people slept on Ray Ca$h the last time out and let me tell you something: you’re missing out.  His first album was definitely above par and he repped the Midwest very well. Crisp beat with a non annoying hook and solid rhymes. Good track to bump.

Royce the 5’9-Royce Is Like

What do you get when you take one of the fiercest emcees out there and let him blast off over one of Preemo’s classic beats?  You get “Royce Is Like.” Right about now it’s not a stretch to saw Royce is the best in Detroit.  That includes our favorite white rapper. What more you say? He rip’s “So Gangsta” as well.  The grind game is serious.

Scarface-High Powered

The living legend of the South is back with Emeritus and if you didn’t know, that’s when you hold a title whether you are retired or not. Well as you can hear, Face sounds anything but ready for the scrap heap and sounds fresh on the mic. This joint has a heavy bottom and a sinister sound

Clipse-Addiction

After the disappointing Re-Up album, it was time to flood the streets with some more of that Blue Magic.  On this joint your favorite drug rappers are back and they have definitely turned up the heat.  The flow is ill and they arrange the verses well on the piano break.

OB feat Peedi & Styles P-Where The Money At

Newcomer OB (Not Obie) drops a BANGER with Peedi and Styles riding shotgun. The beat is just the kind that makes you nod you head and spazz out.  He gives a good showing and definitely holds his own. Bang this in your mp3 players.

Busta Ryhmes feat. T.I. & Reek Da Villain

Man this is just a good ole fashioned collabo banger. T.I. takes the hardcore higher than the he did on Paper Trail with a back to the gutter flow and Bussa Bus steps away from silly ____ Money remixes to give us heat.  Shout to Reek Da Villan who does a solid job batting cleanup even in he’s not in the right weight class

Papa Duck Feat. Rick Ross & Ace-Look At My Swag

How do you get away with being a CO while giving us coke tales?  You stick to your story and flood the streets with enough music to keep them talking about your rhymes rather than your rep. While he’s a guest star on this track, he commands the most attention, but Papa Duck does enough to maintain ownership. Florida can stand up on this.

JD Era-Good Morning

Well I guess Soulja Boy isn’t alone in his dislike for everyone’s favorite hedgehog.  He kinda goes at duke and doesn’t  mince words.  Ditto with Asher Roth. Unno man I can do without rap beefs after seeing Notorious.  If you not gonna punch them in the face on sight then it’s not beef.  Period.

Well that’s it today my dudes and dudettes.  I’ll be on Sunday back again so if you got flavor send away. Peace

T.I., Jeezy, Luda Unite For New York Concert

On Saturday December 27, Atlanta’s three biggest Hip-Hop artists; T.I., Ludacris, and Young Jeezy will deliver their first ever joint concert for Long Island’s Holiday Bash ’08.

The all-star show was the brainchild of Ludacris, who in a November interview with MTV expressed his desire to go on tour with other elite emcees from his hometown.

“I haven’t confirmed anything yet. It’s little talks here and there,” Ludacris cryptically stated. “But I’ll put it out there: I would love to do a tour where it’s me, T.I. and Jeezy. Me, Tip, and Jeezy would be outrageous. But nothing is confirmed yet.”

Based on how well the one-time concert does, an official nationwide tour could be announced shortly.

All three artists have released high-profile albums this year: T.I.’s Paper Trail (1X Platinum), Young Jeezy’s The Recession (Gold), and Ludacris’ Theater of the Mind.

The show will also boast additional performances from R&B newcomer Kristy Scott, and New York’s own Nina Sky and Jim Jones.

Hot 97’s Angie Martinez and DJ Enuff will host the evening, with Cipha Sounds handling DJ duties.

Before the show, fans will be treated to an exclusive meet and greet with the artists.

Tickets for the event range from $35.50-$125.50 and can be purchased through ticketmaster.com, or the Nassau Coliseum box office Monday-Friday, 9:30AM-4:30PM.

Tracy Morgan Preps New Comedy ‘Freshman Roommates’

VH1 Hip-Hop Honors’ 2008 host Tracy Morgan is set to produce and star in Freshman Roommates, a new comedy film for Paramount Pictures.

The plot was inspired by the various spam/scam emails sent by individuals claiming to be a Nigerian prince seeking help accessing a lucrative inheritance.

After a drunken young man responds to one of the emails as a joke, the son of a deposed African dictator [played by Morgan] actually shows up looking for the promised inheritance help.

Freshman Roommates again brings Morgan together with 30 Rock executive producer David Miner, who will retain the same title for the film.

Tracy Morgan will produce the film under his newly formed Street Life company.

Also starring in the film is TJ Miller, best known to movie-goers for his appearance in the blockbuster Cloverfield, the first movie of 2008 to gross $100 million.

In October, Tracy Morgan hosted his fourth consecutive VH1 Hip-Hop Honors award show.

The honorees included Too $hort, Naughty By Nature, De La Soul, Slick Rick, Cypress Hill, and the late Isaac Hayes.

In addition, Morgan is the featured host of Sci-Fi’s prank show Scare Tactics.

At press time, Tracy Morgan’s Freshman Roommates does not have a release date.

Real, Chance Plan New Rap Infused Album; Reality Show

For brothers Ahmad and Kamal Givens, better known as “Real” and “Chance” respectively, their decision about what to do with their lives once their popular VH1 reality show comes to an end was far from difficult.

As the Real Chance of Love series finale approaches, the two have already returned to their first love: making music, they told AllHipHop.com during a recent interview.

Real, Chance and their younger brother Mickey, who appeared on the show’s second episode, have been developing their pop-rock infused rap style since they were children.

They are moving forward with their first major release as The Stallionaires.

“It will be [out] in 09, there’s no specific date yet,” oldest brother Real told AllHipHop.com about untitled album. “Right now we’re pushing two singles, ‘Summer Love Child’ and ‘Does She Love Me,’ [which] was the original single. But ‘Summer Love Child’ is getting a lot of attention and press, so we’re pushing both.”

Prior to joining the cast of the original Flavor of Love spin-off I Love New York, The Stallionaires had started production on a scripted-reality show similar to MTV’s The Hills, in hopes of expanding their reach as artists.

Their memorable appearance as suitors in season two of I Love New York helped open doors for the reality stars/rappers.

“It’s much easier because everyone who wants to do the music thing wants to do the TV thing now too,” Chance told AllHipHop.com.

“The problem was always that our music, even now, don’t sound like a lot of music out there,” Real elaborated. “And the problem was we did that kind of music way back then and the record companies didn’t know how to market that kind of music. [But] we said, ‘The hell with y’all. We’re gonna sound the way we want to sound.’”

Their tenacity seems to have paid off. The lead single “Does She Love Me,” which also doubles as the show’s theme song has garnered over 750,000 plays on MySpace.

The Cisco Adler-produced “Summer Love Child” has been heard close to 1.5 million times. Both songs are available on iTunes and have started to gain international radio play.

With the album nearly complete, Real and Chance are turning their attention to a new reality show which will feature the exploits of younger brother Mickey, expected to debut shortly after the release of the album.

They are also planning their first promotional tour, which will offer fans a much grander experience than the sample performance featured on Real Chance of Love.

The group will make an appearance in Philadelphia December 20 during The 1st Annual “Clash of the Arts” Gala in the Ormandy Ballroom at the Doubletree Hotel in Philadelphia.

The event showcases the latest fashions and also features appearances ranging from dance choreographer Darrin Henson (“Darrin’s Dance Grooves”) to “Phresh Select” and “Shhh” from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew.

“We’re entertainers,” explained Real. “We’re gonna give you a doggone show, like how Miley Cyrus and Justin Timberlake and all these other [acts]. It’s not gonna be some little production.”

The Real Chance of Love series finale will air on January 5, with a reunion special to follow a week later.

ALBUM REVIEW: Jamie Foxx – Intuition

Jamie Foxx has another album out—sure, why not? While

Foxx’s last release came off as unnecessary and opportunistic to some, his

actual first album came out in 1994, so he technically has deeper roots than

many. He’s neither among the best nor worst singers of these fifteen years so

he’s no less deserving of his spot than any of the long list of forgettable

R&B dudes that have come and gone. More to the point, Intuition [J Records] actually isn’t bad. Of course, it isn’t

actually that good either.

Mainly, Intuition is

predictable and calculated. All of the requisite elements for a typical modern

R&B album are there: The-Dream, Tricky Stewart, Ne-Yo, an okay Timbaland

track, a dumb verse from Lil Wayne, Auto-Tune, gratuitous obscenity, T.I., a

dedication to independent ladies, that chick from Floetry, Hennessey, public

sex and so on. Probably by coming out of his own pocket to bring most of this

together, Foxx has built an album that would’ve been just as good no matter who

was singing it.

As a result, there’s really nothing terribly objectionable

about any individual song on the LP. There are a few questionable choices

– using a strange variant of his “Ray Charles” voice for “I Don’t Need

It,” for one – but something like the mid-tempo dance track “Digital Girl”

(with an uncredited assist from Kanye West) is a decent enough. “Blame It”

(T-Pain’s legally obligated cameo) has a guy going “heeeey” on the beat and

even though it isn’t Jeezy, it’s probably close enough.

On the album’s “quiet storm” segment, Foxx goes into the

standard Brian McKnight-isms and…whatever. People who might enjoy “getting

their freak on” to the soothing sounds of Willie Beamen should check out

“Freak’in Me” but just about everything else that follows is slow and

theoretically romantic so there’s plenty to choose from. You’ve heard this all

before, sometimes better, sometimes worse.

If you’re in your late thirties but enjoy pretending that

you’re in your mid-twenties, this is the album for you. Every trendy R&B

trapping of the last few years is represented here so you’ll have no problem

getting up to speed on “what the kids are listening to.” Jokes aside, Jamie

Foxx is mainly just doing what’s expected of him. Intuition (hopefully) isn’t his best attempt at giving the

genre the boost it needs, but he isn’t doing it any harm either – could

be worse.

Exile Talks Instrumental “Radio”Album; New Emanon Album

Having created hits for stars as diverse as underground rapper Blu (Below the Heavens) and veteran group Mobb Deep (“Pearly Gates”), acclaimed San Diego producer Exile is now juggling a burgeoning solo career and several new collaboration albums for 2009.

Despite being disgusted by today’s urban radio market, Exile crafted his latest opus Radio by sampling all the LP’s sounds, including drums, from local LA radio stations.

The 12-month creative process has resulted in a melting pot of arrangements, melodies, and rhythms that brings together everything from the jazz funk of Donald Byrd, to quirky request callers and opera singers.

“I turn the radio on now and all I hear is that vocoder s**t. I’m amazed by what they’re playing. I listen to it for a couple minutes and shut it off,” Exile explained to AllHipHop.com. “[With Radio] I would actually have ideas of certain types of vocals I would want on the beat. I’d just listen until I captured something that spoke something I could manipulate to what I wanted to convey.”

Without having to tailor his production for the bars of an emcee, Exile elaborated that he was able to use Radio to showcase extended vocal and instrumental arrangements normally seen in jazz and classical music.

“[The sound] was left completely open to fill in the space where an emcee would normally rap,” Exile detailed. “It gave me a lot more freedom to have a lot more things going on. It allowed me to find a voice within the radio and in the vocal samples to communicate a new message as opposed to just playing beats. I wanted to do a different instrumental album that was more than just beat records. It tells a story.”

In addition to Radio, Exile will again collaborate for full albums with several emcees in early 2009.

“I’m wrapping up an album with an 19-year old rapper from Fresno named Fashawn. The album is called Boy Meets World. We’re going into the studio for the final time this week,” Exile stated. “I also executive produced an album for my man Blame One called Days Chasing Days [due out in January]. I did the majority of the beats, but there’s other stuff on there from Black Milk. Blu and Sean Price will be on there as well.”

Fans of Exile will also be happy to learn of a new project from Emanon, the critically acclaimed group that features his partner Aloe Blacc.

“[Finally] I’m six songs deep into the new Emanon group project with Aloe Blacc,” Exile revealed. “He’s been singing lately but man his raps are better than ever fight now. I’m real excited [and] it’ll be called A Bird’s Eye View

Radio hits stores January 20, 2009.

Jake One: #1 Beat Supplier

Jake One is well aware that his album, White Van Music, may have confused some listeners. It’s not a collective of any one Hip-Hop sub-genre, and even if it doesn’t work for everyone, he’s happy knowing he made the record that he wanted to make. After years without much control over the final product of his music, the Seattle-based producer is satisfied having the power and now the heightened recognition that comes with your own release. Jake One’s track record is extensive and encompasses artists from all over the map, something the Seattle repping beatman fully utilized when drafting the dynamic duo type pairings found throughout his recent project. Whether it was rhyme-capable producers Nottz and Black Milk on the album opener, or Motown psycho-spitters Royce Da 5’9″ and Elzhi, there’s no denying Jake One’s ear for what works well.Regardless of the reviews the album has served a greater purpose in his career; showcasing his ability to provide a suitable backdrop for damn near everyone he cares to work with. With at least two major projects under his direction slated for next year, along with his usual work with mainstream artists like 50 Cent, 2009 should be another big year for the production prodigy.AllHipHop.com: It may be coincidence, but the last time we talked about a year ago. At the time you were at the RedBull Music Academy in Toronto. Have you been doing many things of that nature in the last year?Jake One: Yeah actually I have a program with Redbull that I run called the Redbull Big Tune which is a producer battle. We’ve done seven of those this year and we’re doing the eighth one in November in L.A. with the finals in New York in December. We throw together a head-to-head producer battle but we also do an educational outreach where I’ll go to a community center with younger kids and show them how to make a beat and answer questions about the music industry. Like how much I make, and whatever else they decide to ask me.Jake One f/ Freeway “The Truth” VideoAllHipHop.com: Talking to the youth must be a rewarding experience.Jake One: Yeah it’s fun to interact with the kids that are still excited. A lot of people my age are kind of burnt out and they got life problems and things, so they don’t have that same fire for the music like they did when they were younger.AllHipHop.com: Looking at the websites and magazines and album liner notes, your presence has definitely increased over the past 12 months. What’s different now compared to back then?Jake One: You know it probably hasn’t changed that much from a business side. It’s more having this record that I’m the face of has made people more aware of what I’ve been doing. That was part of the reason for doing the record, kind of like a bigger advertisement for what I do. A lot of people don’t read the credits. People don’t even buy the records, so how are they going to see the credits? And then sometimes people will leak a song and give someone else my credit. AllHipHop.com: I remember you were venting about that Hot Rod track [“Be Easy”] last year that everyone thought was a Dr. Dre beat.Jake One: [Laughs] Yeah that was one of many where people just drew a name. 50 recently leaked a song of mine called “50 For President” and even though I did it, my name isn’t on it. So that’s just the Internet age, and you kind of have to take that into your own hands and just let people know what you’ve done, or they’re never going to know.AllHipHop.com: As far as people reaching out to you, have there been a lot of inquiries that fell through or you had to turn down?Jake One: Man, I’ve got so many beats that if I think I have something that’s going to work for whoever it is, I try to send them something. I did songs for a couple records this year that just didn’t make it, but I did at least get the chance to work on [those projects]. To me, as long as I’m in the running I can’t really complain too much.AllHipHop.com: Last year you were still getting over the fact you no longer have to hold a 9-to-5 job. Is that transition over for you now?Jake One: Yeah, it does seem like so long ago that I had a job [laughs]. But man, I’ve been working hard! Doing this record was a lot more work than when I do a record for somebody else. I just sit back and let them do all the work. So I’ve been doing release parties, all types of interviews and other extra things that I normally don’t do.Get Er Done feat MF Doom – Jake OneAllHipHop.com: Selling beats, you rarely get any creative control over the final product. Once the paper work is signed…Jake One: Yeah a lot of times, depending on who it is and their process, I usually don’t have much to do with the song once it’s recorded. With this record I’ve been literally able to go back in and do whatever I want with the songs, whether that’s filling them out or taking stuff out or whatever needs to be done.AllHipHop.com: You were already prepping White Van Music a year ago, so it’s been a long time in the making. What was the process?Jake One: A lot of what takes time is just waiting on rappers. That’s part of it. Just coming up with the record that I thought was going to be good enough to present as being my best work took time. That was really the main thing. I could have put it out earlier but it wouldn’t have been as good. I think it was good that I took the time and it all happened for the right reasons. I worked on it for like two years, and I would say only towards the end when I started mixing did I really spend full days on it. I would just do a song here or there and put it in the pile and then go work on it when it was really time to finish.AllHipHop.com: Did it make it easier with most of the artists being independent and not having to worry about all the red tape with “Rapper appears courtesy of label” and all that business?Jake One: Yeah that was definitely a good thing to have sidestepped. I got lucky in a couple situations where I did the record when these guys were on major labels, and they had releases by the time the record came out. But it’s definitely a smaller scale for everything and personally it’s been refreshing to do that. It feels good to be more hands on with everything and not be so disconnected from the process.AllHipHop.com: Was that the situation with M.O.P., where they were on a major at the time you recorded it?Jake One: Yeah that record was actually done for their album on G-Unit. I did a couple other songs that were on there too.AllHipHop.com: I was listening the album and I couldn’t help but think about some of your peers like Marco Polo, Statik Selektah and DJ Babu who also released their own solid albums recently. Is there a friendly rivalry among DJs and producers with their albums?Jake One: You know, producers in general are not really like rappers. All the guys you mentioned I know personally and we’re all friends, so it’s like I want to see them succeed. I look at it like the more people that are in to what they’re doing, the more people that are going to be into what I’m doing, and vice versa, I’m sure. So it’s not like there’s 100 people trying to do the same thing. And that goes for Hi-Tek’s album, I went out and bought that, and Alchemist’s album, and everybody who’s doing that.AllHipHop.com: As for the business side of the album, how much has Rhymesayers helped out with it?Jake One: They’ve been great as far as getting the word out and thinking of a lot of things to do. I’m more of a creative person on the music side, I’m not thinking of marketing plans and all the other stuff. I think they’ve done as good of a job as they could have possibly done, and I don’t think any other label could do a better job than they have. I think it was the perfect place to do this, and it’s looking like we’re going to do pretty well. AllHipHop.com: It seem this may be the beginning of a good business relationship for you. Are there any projects being planned?Jake One: There’s a couple other projects I’m working on bringing to them that would definitely shock people, so hopefully next year we’re going to see those come to fruition. There’s a lot of songs recorded but there’s nothing set in stone yet, so I don’t want to throw something out there that people are going to ask me about that doesn’t happen [laughs] I’ve been dealing with [Rhymesayers] for a minute, and there’s definitely a family atmosphere over there, no pun intended. I believe in what they do, I appreciate the way they handle business the way they pushed the record. It’s kind of a lost art. A lot of the indie labels at this point are so strapped for cash that they don’t have the staff to pull off the kind of leg work that they can do. And they have a really serious brand that I’m contributing to as well.AllHipHop.com: So what do you have confirmed for 2009?Jake One: There’s a couple things I’m working on that are potentially really, really big. But I’ve got a couple songs on the new Prodigy album, I’m on Scarface’s new album, De La Soul should be 2009. I’m doing a lot of work on Freeway’s new record, although where that’s coming out has yet to be determined.Oh Really feat. Posdnuos & Slug – Jake OneAllHipHop.com: It’s an interesting time for these major labels.Jake One: The thing that I don’t understand is why they don’t just take something that’s already moderately successful and just adjust the budget for it. If you can sell 100,000 records in this day and age that’s pretty good in itself. So instead of trying to spend and being mad when it doesn’t sell a million, base your calculations on 100,000. It’s not that wild a concept, but I guess they’re just so used to shooting for the moon that it would weird for them to go for anything else.AllHipHop.com: It’s upsetting for a fan when you know an album is complete, all the money has been spent and invested, and it doesn’t get released. Even if you don’t have any marketing budget, why not just drop it and let the artists’ fanbase help you recoup?Jake One: Yeah, it’s weird [laughs]. As much major label stuff as I do, I’ve pretty much disconnected from the whole scene.

Trae the Truth Plays Santa for Kids at “Winter Wonderland”

Rising Houston rapper Trae the Truth will join local councilman Jarvis Johnson this Thursday (December 18) for the 3rd

annual “Winter Wonderland,” a Christmas party for students in Houston’s

District B that have shown the most improved grades this year.Trae will don Santa the Claus garb to greet arriving kids and hand out toys supplied by Councilman Peter Brown.

The

event marks Trae’s second community outreach event in the last two

months. In November, the rapper participated in “Tackle Hunger,” a

Thanksgiving food drive done in partnership with the Amobi Okoye

Foundation.

This

year’s “Winter Wonderland” is being held at Discovery Green Park in

downtown Houston. In addition to Trae’s Santa role, the kids will be

treated to ice-skating, horse trolley rides, and a snowman-making

contest. The children will be comprised of 25 students from 20

different schools throughout District B who have demonstrated the most

significant improvement with their grades.

Councilman

Jarvis Johnson hopes by having such a high-profile event, more kids

will be motivated to focus on their studies in the coming year.

“By

rewarding the academic success of the most improved students, it is my

expectation that other students will strive harder next year to achieve

the same success,” Johnson told AllHipHop.com.

“Winter

Wonderland” will commence from 10AM-1PM tomorrow. Local Houston media

and citizens are encouraged to attend and support the event.
