“Where You From”
“Where You From”
Whats up peoples? Its the final month of 2008 and the week
jumps off with India and Pakistan beefing over last weeks attack on Mumbai,
President-elect Obama introducing his national security team as he nominates
Hilary Clinton for Secretary of State and the official word that we are in a
recession despite an increase in business on Black Friday.
R.I.P. to legendary folk singer Odetta, who died Tuesday
(Dec. 2) of heart disease. Shout out to the sounding boards for bringing the
heat in freezing conditions.
OK, lets cut to the chase the Last Word for the week ending
Dec. 5, 2008.
1. Akon, Diddy and Jamie Foxx Put Bid in for First Black
James Bond
The action, the gadgets, the exotic locations, the women.
Nobody ever said being James Bond was dull. Therefore, it shouldnt come as a
shock that we may one day see a Black 007 on the big screen. Were already
getting a Black president, why not a suave and cool super-spy to protect us
from those bent on ruling the world illegally.
Enter three entertainers who want to fill Bonds shoes after
Daniel Craigs gangsta spy stint is up. Up first is Akon, who has Pussycat
Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger picked out to be his Bond girl should he
make the cut.
A lot of people dont know that Im heavily trained in
martial arts. And when it comes to cars thats my thing. I was raised
on cars, Akon told the Sun. I could do
acting. It would probably take me six months to a year of training to make sure
Id get the role.
If all else fails, Akon says hell come out of his own
pocket to make his Bond fantasy a reality with a movie version of his own. He
could get T-Pain to play Q and make a bunch of vocoder/Auto-Tune inspired
gadgets to bring the bad guys to their knees with too much use.
Not to be outdone, Jamie Foxx is saying he would have no
problem taking on a British accent for the role as he would put a little swing
in it. A little Hip-Hop, you know.
Not only that, but the Oscar winner would keep it real by
switching up Bonds favorite drink for something a bit different. Maybe not
drinking martinis, but drinking some Hennessey maybe, Foxx joked with Access
Hollywood. Bond would drink dark liquor.
If these guys are serious, they had better catch up to
Diddy. The rap mogul has already started his campaign for the Bond role by
using the ad for his new I Am King fragrance as a screen test for the part.
This is my audition tape for the next James Bond, Diddy
said about the clip, which features him dressed in a tuxedo with a bevy of Bond
girls on location in the South of France. There is a Black President and it’s
time for there to be a Black Bond.
So those are the contenders. If you ask me, we already have
a Black 007. His name? Shaft. John
Shaft.
2. Amy Winehouses Blake Takes Blame for Singers Drug
Habit; Goes from Rehab Back to Jail
Now that Amy Winehouse has emerged as 2008s most talented
crack head, her husband Blake Civil-Fielder has finally admitted to being the
one that started his better halfs transformation from Grammy winner to hot
international mess.
I dragged Amy into it and without me there is no doubt that
she would never have gone down that road. I ruined something beautiful,
Civil-Fielder told Britain’s News of the World. Crack is the nastiest drug But I was weak and an addict and I let
Amy take some. I didn’t stop it from happening. For that I take full
responsibility. It became something we did as well as heroin. And then our
lives fell apart.
Civil-Fielder goes on to recount how Winehouse was so
affected by him that she adopted his habit of self-mutilation when trying to
deal with their situation. Now that hes confessed, Civil-Fielder feels she
should put an end to his marriage to Winehouse so she can fully kick her habit.
It scares me to death that I can’t fix Amy. But for her
recovery, I have to leave her alone. I will never stop wanting Amy and loving
her and craving her. More than anything I am addicted to Amy. I will do
anything for her and that includes walking away.
As it stands now, Amy is in a private hospital receiving
ongoing treatment for a bad reaction to medication she was taking. According to
the Sun newspaper, Civil-Fielder, who
was released into rehab a month ago, has now been sent back to prison after
failing a drug test. As a result, hell have to serve the remainder of his
27-month sentence with his release set for 2010. Apparently, before getting
sent back up North, Blake visited Amy in her hospital bed, and well, he got the
business before dressing in stripes again. Gross.
Despite rumors of a looming divorce, Winehouses reps have
denied any happenings with their client in terms of a split.
3. Chris Brown and Rihanna Named in Photographer Lawsuit
They may not admit to being a couple, but Chris Brown and
Rihanna have come together as they face a new lawsuit from a newspaper
photographer.
E! News reports that
Luis Santana, a photographer for The St. Petersburg Times, is suing Brown and Rihanna for $1 million over
claims that bodyguards for the entertainers beat him up and confiscated and
broke his camera after he saw them leaving the Vintage Ultra Lounge together in
early May. According to Santana, he was invited to the club to take pictures of
the singers as they celebrated Browns 19th birthday. Although he was told he
couldnt photograph the couple inside the club, Santana stated that Browns
bodyguards let him shoot the entertainers in the parking lot.
Once I snapped
pictures of Chris and Rihanna, Chris jumped out of the limo and his bodyguards
began chasing me, said Santana, who filed the lawsuit on Tuesday (Dec. 2).
One of the guys ripped my shirt off and grabbed me. They threw me to the
ground and started kicking me. One of the guys put his knee in my face and was
pressing down. I thought my jaw was going to break.
At this time, no charges have been filed in the case in
light of the police receiving conflicting stories of what happened. The $1
million Santana seeks will cover the cost of the camera and the photos lost as
well as compensation for his injuries and emotional distress.
4. Gary Coleman Gets Fined for Bowling Debacle
He may not be as famous as he was in the late 70s and 80s,
but Gary Coleman continues to keep his name out there by appearing in court
over less than stellar conduct.
The Associated Press
reports the 40-year-old former Diffrent Strokes star was ordered to pay a $100 fine on Tuesday (Dec.
2) after pleading no contest to a disorderly conduct charge. The charged
stemmed from an incident at a bowling alley in September.
Court documents state that Colemans wife took a mans cell
phone as the guy was taking pictures of the child star with his cell phone
camera. A scuffle later ensued, after which Coleman ran into the man with his
truck as he was backing out of the parking lot.
In addition to disorderly conduct, Coleman pleaded no
contest to a reckless driving charge, which will be waived if he doesn’t have
any other violations within a year.
Why cant Gary be like Emmanuel Lewis and lead a
trouble-free life? With the court cases and anger management issues, dont be
surprised if he starts a rap career. Look for his debut, Little Things
Poppin, Big Mess Droppin (Whatchu Talkin Bout?) at a 99 cent bin near you.
5. TLC Takes
a Sleigh Ride For Christmas
Last week it was the Temptations. This week its TLC delivering
some Christmas cheer with their version of the holiday classic Sleigh Ride.
It definitely gets you in the mood for the holidays as T-Boz and Chili and the
late Left Eye show how much fun it is to be among family and friends during the
Christmas season in the songs video. R.I.P. Lisa. You are still missed. Its
tracks like these that make us remember how much joy you brought to us.
Enjoy!Sleigh Ride – TLC
In Other Words
* Looks like Tyler Perry can scratch one court case off the
list. Variety reports the actor/mogul reached an agreement with the Writers
Guild of America on Wednesday (Dec. 3) regarding a contract covering writers on
his hit show House of Payne and upcoming
spin-off Meet the Browns.
The new deal came after five months of negotiations and
accusations that Perry fired four writers around the same time because they
wanted WGA coverage. Perry countered the claims by saying the scribes, three of
whom were WGA members, were let go because he was unhappy with the quality of
their work on House of Payne and Meet
the Browns. Despite the agreement, the WGA
admitted the pact with Perry did not involve the reinstatement of the four
writers.
* Jordin Sparks is adding clothing designer to her resume as
she aligns with Wet Seal. The clothing store will carry Sparks, a new line of
holiday dresses designed by the American Idol winner. An assortment of holiday dresses will kick off the line, which
will late include casual apparel and accessories. Dress sizes, which range in
size from XS to XL, will be priced from $30 to $55.
* There is more to Nick Cannon than being Mr. Mariah Carey.
The actor and occasional rapper has taped a new PSA for this years Bowl for
Kids Sake campaign. The campaign is noted for being the largest fundraiser for
Big Brothers Big Sisters, an organization dedicated to helping children to
reach their potential through professional supported one-to-one relationships.
Cannons Bowl for Kids Sake will debut in American Eagle
stores this spring.
* You cant say that fame has made Will Smith too busy to
spread a little good cheer. According to reports, the rapper/actor took time
out recently to visit sick children at a Miami Children’s Hospital. Smith, who
was in Miami to promote his upcoming movie Seven Pounds, handed out stuffed animals and DVDs and signed
autographs during his surprise visit as well as reportedly making a generous
donation to the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation.
* The spirit of the holidays is contagious. Not only for
Will Smith but also for Jamie Foxx. The Oscar winning actor/vocalist recently
joined High School Musical 3 star Corbin
Blue for Feed The Need, a youth-led food drive inspired by his upcoming film The
Soloist.
The entertainers are currently promoting their cause through
PSAs that are running online and in schools. Borrowing from the films message
on the power of music, youth who sign up for the drive on DoSomething.org
become eligible to win one of five $1,000 grants for an arts or music program.
* Move over
Kanye West. Madonna has become the new face of Louis Vuitton. Media sources say
that the Material Girl will be featured in the clothing brands next fashion ad
campaign.
The campaign will include six pictures of Madonna that are
slated to occupy various fashion magazines in February. A Parisian theme of
Marc Jacobs hit spring Vuitton collection will be presented in the campaign as
a smoky French bistro provides the setting. The first photos will spotlight
slouchy bags in monogram canvas and monogram-embossed leather, along with
ethnic-inspired sandals, bangles and sexy ready-to-wear.
Working with Madonna proved to be a great experience for
Jacobs, who was impressed at Madges assumed various poses that ranged from
arching her back to recline on bentwood chairs to shooting a leg straight up in
the air without any problem. Shes so sure of herself as an icon and as a
woman. It was her idea to do the fishnets, the designer said.

Is Scarface mad at today’s rap game?
You would think after sixteen, yes sixteen, years in the game E-40 would garner more respect from the Hip-Hop community. The man helped put the San Francisco Bay area on with his early street corner hustle in the 90s to bringing his city to a national spotlight with the recent Hyphy movement. Now with ten albums in the stash and tons of his slang forever embedded in the Rap dictionary, E-40 tries to keep his legacy pushing with his new LP The Ball Street Journal (Asylum).
For starters, he establishes his position in his hometown with the aptly titled The Ambassador. Produced by Rick Rock, the tracks energy compliments 40s busy delivery well. Slowing things down to a more Dirty South tempo is Break Ya Ankles. Featuring Shawty Lo and Lil Johns signature synthesizers, this snap anthem picks up right where Snap Yo Fingers left off.
With just a quick glance at the track listing it is easy to see a heavy amount of features. Unfortunately these guest appearances weigh down the disc and sometimes steer our favorite Ballatician down a generic road. On the lead single Wake It Up, Fonzarelli links up with Akon.
Everyones favorite Senegalese crooner attempts to pepper the track with enough crossover appeal but the effort is almost a replica of Kons current single Right Now. More auto tune sabotage is found with the T-Pain assisted Give Her The Keys. While these radio friendly efforts are expected, E-Feezy doesnt make these joints his own, but rather rides the waves of the respective singers.
All is not completely lost as we do get some flashes of classic E-40 in The Recipe. With verses from Bun B and Gucci Mane, all three sum up the highs and lows of the drug game. True fans will liken 40s charismatic performance here to Rule And Regulations from Charlie Hustle.
While Ball Street Journal doesnt recreate the rawness from his slept on 90s catalog or the commercial magic from its predecessor My Ghetto Report Card, E-40 still serves up a decent listen. Those looking craving that Bay Area Slap step right up.

TODAY’S RUMORS!
MY DAILY TWO CENTS
I almost took the day off ALMOST! ALAS, I AM HERE. Over at MTV, about 850 people were laid off the other day. In the meantime, IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING.

Jamie Foxx and Diddy might have to duke it out over the Black James Bond. Jamie said he wants that role. I think a dude from the UK will get it frankly.

Obie Trice is reportedly finalized his deal with Koch Records.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END
Robert Acosta has a problem. He is being charged with sexual battery, attempted murder, and thats the good stuff. This man stands accused of the rape and battery of a 70-year-old woman. He is in jail right now. He claims there is a misunderstanding. Check the report from CNN and check out who Acosta was rolling with when he was caught:
The 28-year-old man arrested for the rape of an elderly woman is a family friend who showed up at the crime scene. Deputies made an arrest within hours, because the man was hanging around right in front of them.
Robert Acosta was staying with the victim’s daughter just down the street from the scene of the attack, near Bumby and Michigan.
Almost unbelievably, the man who informed the victim’s daughter of the crime is the man now being called the suspect. In fact, he hung around the crime scene all morning, eerily milling about right under the noses of those who were looking for him.
“It’s all a misunderstanding,” Acosta said Thursday afternoon as he was taken in for questioning.
When he walked out of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office that night, he was asked if he wanted to explain himself.
He said he’s waiting on DNA results in the case.B***H PLEASE!…
SLAP A B***H!
I happen to be a big fan of Macy Gray and now she has a blog on AllHipHop (click here to see it)! Anyway, she is real different and hes not fronting avant gard like some of these acts out here. Anyway, she has a new song called Slap A B***h and the whole video is a bunch of Fails aka people slapping the living s**t out of each other. I love it. Click here to get Macys take on it and the actual video. My favorite slap comes at 1:09 minutes in the video.
RANDOM QUOTES
Jazmine Sullivan got the five Grammy nods, but shes really excited to meet Coldplay (People magazine):
“I am so excited to meet them! I actually want to do a song with Chris Martin, so maybe somebody will introduce me to him, or I can slip him an album and he can listen!”
Beyonce told Elle magazine that her 8-month marriage to Jay-Z is a “power struggle. (Only 8 months?!):
“But if I didn’t respect someone, and they didn’t have that strength, then I would be bored. I wouldn’t be attracted to them.
Palin tries to dis Oprah? The nerve of this trailer trash!
“I said I would be happy to talk to Sarah Palin when the election was over… I went and tried to talk to Sarah Palin and instead she talked to Greta [Van Susteren]. She talked to Matt [Lauer]. She talked to Larry [King]. But she didn’t talk to me. But maybe she’ll talk to me now that she has a [multi-million dollar] book deal.”
COMMENTS ON YOUNG BUCK
Yesterday, I had a note about Buck from a source. The person suggested that Buck didnt fulfill his obligation. Thats not quite true. Read on.
I just wanted to say that I work for Ocean records who promoted the Bend, Oregon show for Young Buck. While it is true that Young Buck blew off everything else he committed to there no issues at Showcase Apparel and the story is completely false. That being said, I will say that his professionalism leaves a lot to be desired and I’m here giving him credit only for the one thing he did right from a promo standpoint. He did in fact perform well on stage.

The multi-million dollar home of Marion Suge Knight was recently sold in bankruptcy court, adding to the rap moguls list of problems.
Knights Malibu mansion was sold for $4.56 million dollars – much less than the $6.2 million dollars the former head of Death Row Records was seeking for the house last year.
The seven-bedroom, 9 ½ bathroom, Mediterranean style house, which has views of the ocean, also sits on 8 acres of land and features a pool and tennis court.
The sale comes on the heels of Knight being charged with two felony drug charges and one misdemeanor assault charge earlier this month.
Knight, 43, was allegedly involved in an incident in Las Vegas on August 27, in which he is accused of assaulting a female acquaintance and standing over her with a knife during an argument.
Police also claim Knight was in possession of ecstasy and hyrdocodone on the night of the altercation with the woman, identified as Melissa Isaac.
Isaac, who was allegedly found naked on the side of the road by police, was treated at a local hospital for injuries related to the assault, although she was not stabbed despite the fact that Knight was holding a knife.
At press time, Isaacs whereabouts are unknown.
Knight is also suing superstar Kanye West, claiming the chart topping rapper is responsible for a $135,000 dollar diamond earring that was lost when Knight was shot in the leg, at a pre-VMA party in Miami in 2005.
Also named in that lawsuit is The Shore Club, the Miami Beach venue that hosted the party for West.
Knight is also suing the Barstow, California Police Department, claiming the match to his other missing earring was stolen by police, as he was being transferred from different detention centers.
Knight, who once helmed the influential Death Row Records, filed for bankruptcy protection in April of 2006, to avoid paying a default $107 million judgment to Michael Harry-O Harris and his estranged wife Lydia Harris.
The Harris claim they helped launch Death Row in 1991 by providing $1.5 million in seed money.
In court documents, Knight revealed that his total monthly bill in child support alone equals almost $37,000 dollars per month.
I have not been able to keep those payments current due to a lack of income, Knight wrote to the court last May.
While I have been trying in a number of ways to earn income since the filing of my Chapter 11 case in April of 2006, I have yet to receive any income .any monies that I am able to recover from the proceeds of my personal injury claim relating to me being shot would be needed by me to support my living expenses and to support my children, Knight wrote.
On January 8, 2008 Albert Prodigy Johnson of Mobb Deep infamy began serving a three and a half year
sentence after pleading guilty to gun possession charges stemming from an
incident in 2006.
Nevertheless, before entering those four walls and momentarily
losing his freedom, P was able to record his third solo project, HNIC 2, which was released in April 2008
and on October 21, 2008 he released Product
of the 80s with longtime associates Big Twins and Un Pacino.
Not too long after Capital P’s incarceration AllHipHop asked its
Ill Community members to ask the Q-Boro MC some questions with assurances that he
would answer each one candidly. Thanks go to Ps wife KiKi
for asking those questions and recording his answers. Now peep P speaking freely.
AllHipHop.com: What does Prodigy think
about the reception of HNIC 2? Did it live up to his expectations? Isis
Prodigy: I like the reception of the album HNIC
Part 2. It’s been good, know what I mean, while I been locked up in jail, so it
did what it did know what I mean? And you know my music is not fast food, it’s going
to always sell. We have a permanent shelf life and I ain’t
just no come and go artist, it ain’t gon’ tomorrow so By the time I get home, I’ma still be promoting it, I’ma
go on tour promoting it. I’ma drop a new one. But Ima make all my albums go gold.
Thats my goal;
to reach that 500 mark for every Mobb
Deep, Prodigy project that we put out. It is what it is right now. I’m happy
with it.
AllHipHop.com: Who, in your mind, are
the Top 5, or 10, greatest MCs in Hip-Hop history? -TheKnowledge
Prodigy: Im rolling with top
five, ten is too damn much. Let me see. Hip-Hop
history, G#######. Probably Run-DMC, ya know Rakim, probably LL [Cool
J], who else? Kool G Rap. Nas. Lets throw Mobb Deep in there, know what I’m saying. Mobb Deep. Thats like five right
there right?
AllHipHop.com: Do you think signing with G-UNIT
alienated/disappointed your CORE audience that supported yall since “The
Infamous” era? -Willy Killem
Prodigy: Umm, I don’t know. I think some people didn’t like it, some people
did like it. We don’t make business moves for other people,
we make business moves for ourself [sic] and for our
music. So it really doesn’t matter to us what people think. You can hate it or
you can love it, it really doesn’t matter. We’re gonna make our deals, we’re gonna
stay relevant. We’re always gonna
drop albums. These other rappers out here, they running around frontin’ talking all this this
that and the third, their albums are never coming out. They can’t even drop a album. They got people that, “ahh
he’s the best rapper around.” Their album is never coming out first of
all. They can’t even put an album out.
So when you look
at Mobb Deep and we’ll be able to stay consistent,
keep dropping albums and keep making new deals after all this time we’ve been
in the business, you can’t do nothing but respect that. So whoever got
something bad to say, they a loser, they stupid. You know they’re ignorant and
umm, that’s what it is, know what I’m saying?
AllHipHop.com: Why did you not put “My World is Empty
Without You” on HNIC 2? –Stringer Bell
Prodigy: Basically I did a lot of songs [and]
everything just dont make it on the album.. There’s a few reasons that I won’t get into. It has nothing
to do with the lyrics. It has nothing to do with what the song is about. It was
definitely business. It was a business decision I made
to make that I couldn’t put it on the album because of a business decision I
made to make. It was definitely a good song. I would have put it on the album
but just I couldn’t do it. I have songs on the album that are just as strong as
that, same message so it’s all good. And that song is still
out there. The world knows the song, that’s all that counts. As long as the
world hear it, get it online they can hear it everywhere or whatever on mixtapes. That’s all that counts. The world acknowledges
that the song is there.
AllHipHop.com: Do you think that 50 Cent beefing with
everybody in the industry is hurting your chances, Mobb Deep and other G-Unit artists from making that Big
Cheese that the rap game has to offer? -IRocJs23
Prodigy: Nah, I mean whatever 50 do that’s what
50 do. That has nothing to do with Mobb Deep you what
I’m saying? If 50 disses somebody and it does affect
us like, “Oh that person doesn’t want to do a song with Mobb Deep now, or doesn’t wanna
buy a beat from Mobb Deep,” then hey, thats
that person lost. We don’t really give a s**t. We do
what we do regardless. 50 say what he wanna
say. Mobb Deep gon’ say
what we wanna say, and we all gon’
keep it moving. Like his career doesn’t stop our career, our career doesn’t
stop his career. No matter what we do, we are our own individual people.
AllHipHop.com: What books are you reading? -The_R_
Prodigy: S**t I read all factual books right now
like autobiographies, history books, just everything man. I’m [inaudible] the 120
Lesson’s Of Islam [Ed. Note: Prodigy is referring to the 120 lessons of the 5%
Nation] s**t everything. I just read every that has something to do with black
history and s**t to do with this planet earth that we live on. Just factual information
you know what I’m saying? I’m not really into fiction and all that s**t know
what I’m saying, I’m really not with that. I’m gonna use my brain power and time and energy to read
big thick ass books. I want it to be something that Ima
learn some information that’s factual that I can do something with you know what I mean. So that’s what I’m reading. I got Eldrige Cleavers autobiography.
I got a book called Medical Apartheid
that’s an ill book. I got a lot of books man. Theyre all factual, just real
good information; that’s what I’m about.
AllHipHop.com: I know you read a lot and recently expressed
your concerns for the future in an animated video done by Broadway. Do you have
any plans to keep talking about these “new world order” plots on Mobb Deep albums? -illseed
Prodigy: I mean, yeah. Whoever said this is
something is new for Prodigy must be a little kid and really don’t know nothing, they
don’t know our history. Because Prodigy been
on it like this since I was in 96. Everyone knows me for that. Even Jay-z
sampled my words when I said “Illiminati want my
mind soul and my body. Jay-Z sampled my words on his Reasonable Doubt album. That came out95, 96 back in the day so…
That’s how long I’ve been talking this kind of information. This
nothing new for me.
Everybody that
acting like, “Oh P talking all this s**t because he locked up now, or,
He think he Malcolm X because he in jail.” N***a get a life and do some
homework, do some research cause youre dumb ass would put your foot in your
mouth if you knew that Prodigy been
on it like this and your just a dumb a###### who just talk s**t; just a hater.
Because I see a lot of people on the Internet leaving comments, saying s**t
like, “P talking all this bulls**t, all this political conspiracy s**t
because he locked up,” and all this and the third but to tell you the
truth, this is what P is all about. This is what P been all about, period. This
me. If you don’t like it, who gives a f**k? I do what
I do regardless. That’s why people that support my music, that’s why they like
me, because I dont give a f**k. I do what I do
regardless.
AllHipHop.com: Rappers are going mainstream. You have
rappers like Jay-Z, Ludacris and even 50 cent
hobnobbing with Bill Gates, billionaires and serious power. What are your
thoughts on this? -sgt. mashout
Prodigy: I mean hey, that’s cool. That’s the
money and power they got. So these are the circles that they around, they in
circles with other billionaires and millionaires. That’s what’s gonna happen. When you have that
much money, your gonna be
associated with other people that got that much money. And that’s what it is. So more power to them. Let them keep going, let them keep
getting right. Thats great.
AllHipHop.com: Do you ever hit creative blocks, how do you
get past them? -Ken_Masters
Prodigy: Nah, I don’t never have a creative
blocs, I don’t never have writers block. I don’t even know what that means.
People say, “I got writer’s block,” I look at them like they crazy
because that’s just a personal problem that they have to learn how to overcome.
I never went through that. Every time I go the studio I dont have a problem
with writing.
AllHipHop.com: What were your interests outside of rap
coming up? And what made you say, forget everything else, I’m gonna be a rapper? -Esoteric429
Prodigy: The only thing that made me say that was
Run-DMC’s song “Sucka
MCs”; that s**t and maybe like Rakim’s ” My
Melody.” Those two songs right there just made me want to start rapping.
It just gave me that feeling and it had that aggression that was inside of me
that I wanted to put out. I was little, I was like 11,
like 10 years old when them songs came out. I was like, “Yeah that’s what
I wanna do right there, I wanna
rap.” ‘Cause I was looking at them on the TV, listening to their songs on
the radio.
AllHipHop.com: How did you feel when Jay-Z sampled your
voice for D’evils? -CheezyaDoDo
Prodigy: I was just like, “Oh s**t, umm I
don’t remember him getting my permission to do that. I didn’t sign nothing for
that, you know what I’m saying, Jay-Z owe me a check.” But other than
that, it was all good, you know what I’m saying, it
was all good. I like Jay and what he does, but certain things he does I don’t
agree with at all. I don’t agree with a lot of things he does to tell you the
truth. But you know when people sample my voice, sample my words, it’s all out
of respect and love because usually that means they like itthey like the
words that I’m saying so it’s all good.
As Miami Hip-Hop mainstay Slip-N-Slide Records enters into its fifteenth year of operation, the labels owner Ted Touche Lucas is preparing to commemorate the anniversary in a major way.
Lucas is inviting fans and colleagues alike to join in the celebration next Thursday (December 11) in Miami.
Confirmed guests for the event include Island Def Jam Music Group chairman L.A. Reid and Warner Music Group president Kevin Liles, both long time friends of Lucas, as well as the entire Slip-N-Slide roster, including the labels marquee artists Trina, Rick Ross, and Plies.
The evening will also include several performances, including a special appearance by R&B singer Keith Sweat.
A lot of prayers went into this, Lucas told AllHipHop.com of Slip-N-Slides success. I aint gonna sit here and play with nobody. Cuz there were times that we had our ups-and-downs as a label, when we went through different things. But definitely [we got through it] by staying prayed up, and building good relationships.
Slip-N-Slide was conceived by Lucas and childhood friend Hollywood, Trick Daddys older brother who unfortunately died, before seeing the success the label would find with his brother in the mid-90s.
The two started out with the R&B group Nu Vibes before establishing themselves as South Floridas premier Hip-Hop label, with the emergence of Tre+6 and, later, Trick Daddy.
Since the 1997 release of Tricks debut Based on a True Story, the label has sold over 10 million records combined, with the most recent success of Rick Ross and Plies adding to the foundation built by Trick and Trina.
My artists, I dont look at them like artists, I look at them like business partners, Lucas explained to AllHipHop.com. We put our heads together and we keep working. Things gonna come, but were able to overcome them and keep working. And bringing on new people like Plies, and Rick Ross finally getting a chance with Hustlin, that made the label continue to grow. And Trick Daddy holding the fort down as well as Trina. Trinas still able to make hit records today, still selling records, and still able to go out there and do shows. A lot of people cant say that after fifteen years of being in business [about] an artist like Trina that youve been in business with all this time. Fans are still happy, [were] still selling and selling ringtones and things of that nature.
The label has now branched out into other genres of music and established a rock division earlier this year.
In addition to its established artists, Slip-N-Slide is moving into the future with the recent addition of pop artist Qwote, who is enjoying moderate success with the new single Dont Wanna Fight.
Also added to the family this year are R&B singers Camar and Shonie, and up-and-coming rapper Swayze Baby.
Were definitely aspiring not to be known as just a rap label, remarked Lucas. Were spreading our wings I wouldnt say Id do anything differently, cuz I wouldnt be able to be here if I didnt go through those times of seeing everything the way it went down. Fifteen years ago, Miami wasnt known for no Hip-Hop. It was known for booty shakin. So I came up through the hardest time of it all. And to be able to survive all that, thats what made us able to still be here 15 years.
Cash Money Records co-founder Ronald Slim Williams has released a statement congratulating Lil Wayne on his earning eight Grammy Award nominations last night (December 3).
In the statement, Williams expressed his pride in Waynes latest career accomplishment and took time to note that his accolades are well deserved.
The success of Tha Carter III was the result of Waynes tireless work ethic and incredible creative ability, Ronald Slim Williams told AllHipHop.com. On behalf of his New Orleans hometown, my brother Baby and I are honored to salute him as the artist with the most nominations at this years Grammy Awards.
Williams and his brother Bryan Baby Williams took Wayne under their wing at the tender age of eleven, helping to mold his aspirations as an artist, which started in the drama club at Eleanor McMain Secondary School in New Orleans.
By the time Wayne was a teenager, he was a member of Cash Moneys ground breaking group the Hot Boys, and well on his way to pushing the boundaries in Hip-Hop.
Tha Carter III, which is up for the coveted Album of the Year award, remains the best selling album of 2008 to date, moving over a million units during its first week upon its release in June.
Weve worked with Lil Wayne since he was a teenager, signing him as part of the Hot Boys with Juvenile, B.G. and Turk, Slim added. We have had the pleasure to see him grow and mature, both artistically and personally, into a multi-platinum superstar, but even more importantly, a loyal member of the Cash Money family, using our label as his base of operations.
Wayne is currently gearing up for the I Am Music Tour which kicks off in Miami on December 14.
He will be joined on the tour by the Gym Class Heroes, Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole and T-Pain.
Lil Wayne is also rumored to be putting the finishing touches on a sequel to Tha Carter III, which will reportedly feature a Hot Boys reunion track.
When one thinks of currency, they think of a means to transact; to exchange. Currency is used to get things that you want, to get goods and services, and to get what you need.Curren$y is not to be confused with Young Money anymore, but apparently he does stand ready willing and able to get you what you need.Previously you saw him on AllHipHop telling you who his Top 5 Dead or Alive emcees were. Since then, he’s been conspicuously silent..until now. Here’s a little dose of the kid in the studio with his homies working on new material. As with all the young cats trying to make a name for themselves he’s a work in progress but i think this joint is cool. We’ll see if duke is built to go the distance without the Cash Money machine. Is Curren$y good money? “Blown Away” is the track from the upcoming street album This Ain’t No Mixtape. Check it out.

Contrary to earlier reports, Philadelphia rapper Gillie Da Kid will not be taking part in an upcoming Brotherly Love Concert being organized by Beanie Sigel and Nikes ACG Store.
Gillie Da Kid, Beanie Sigel and a host of upcoming rappers from Philadelphia have publicly feuded over the past few years by trading insults on mixtapes, the radio and the Internet.
Representatives for Gillie Da Kid have confirmed with AllHipHop.com that a scheduling conflict will prevent the rapper from attending the concert, which is scheduled to take place December 11.
Gillie is set to leave to Puerto Rico to begin filming the movie King of The Avenue with Ving Rhames on December 9, 2008. Gillie’s role in the movie with Ving Rhames is the leading role in the film, a rep for the rapper revealed to AllHipHop.com.
King of The Avenue is being directed by Ryan Combs and centers on a young drug dealer, who sells his soul to the devil in order to become the #1 pusher on the block.
Despite the scheduling conflict, Gillie Da Kid is also doing his part to ensure peace in Philadelphia by officially ending his long standing feud with platinum rapper Cassidy.
A public burying of the hatchet is supposed to occur this Sunday (December 7), AllHipHop.com has confirmed. Gillie and Cassidy are both scheduled to put aside all of their past differences and come together and perform together at Transit Nightclub.
