BREAKING NEWS: Prodigy Of Mobb Deep Dead At 42

(AllHipHop News) Veteran rapper Prodigy from Mobb Deep has passed away.

What details are still coming in, Nas confirmed the unfortunate news on his Instagram page today (June 20).

According to reports, the rapper was hospitalized following a performance on The Art of Rap tour stop in Las Vegas.

“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep,” a rep said in a statement. “Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”

Prodigy, born Albert Johnson, was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia when he was three-months old.

“I have the worse type of sickle cell, the “SS” type,” Prodigy told AllHipHop.com. “If I don’t take care of myself and do the right things, I will experience a severely painful sickle cell crisis; all my joints hurt; it’s a bad scene. Before I really knew how to take care of myself I was in and out of the hospital, they had morphine for pain; IV’s in my arm; couldn’t get comfortable for days at a time, it was really hard on my body.”
