Father’s Day 2025 fell on Sunday (June 15) and, par for the course, Instagram exploded with tributes to the men who raised us.
From Rapsody and Royce Da 5’9 to Naughty By Nature’s Treach and E-40, there was no shortage of Father’s Day tributes populating our algorithms.
Father’s Day in the United States originated in the early 20th century, largely thanks to the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, Dodd wanted to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised her and her siblings alone after their mother’s death.
She proposed the idea of a day to celebrate fathers, and the first official Father’s Day was observed at the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910, coinciding with her father’s birthday month.
Although the holiday didn’t immediately gain widespread acceptance and was at times dismissed as a commercial venture, support from presidents and trade groups gradually helped it gain traction. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed legislation making Father’s Day a permanent national holiday, celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June.
