Nas has pleaded not guilty to a contempt filing from ex-wife
Kelis alleging that he owes over $200,000 in child and spousal support.
The proceedings
happened this morning (February 19), in response to Kelis’ lawyer filing the
motion last month.
In December, Kelis was awarded over $50,000 per month in
spousal and child support on the grounds of Nas’ reported annual gross income
of $4 million, and her dependence on him for financial stability.
Kelis filed for divorce last April while pregnant with their
son, citing irreconcilable differences. The child, named Knight, was born in
July, with Nas being refused entry into the delivery room due to intoxication.
Although the split was rumored to be due to infidelity, both
parties remained silent on the situation until earlier this month, when a
leaked version of the Nas/Damian Marley song “Strong Will Continue” contained
lyrics addressing the failed union.
“How in the hell am I supposed to stay comfy /When I pay
child support, alimony monthly?…So I’ve stuck with some married women so
fine/Cheating while their husband rushing on the 40-yard line / Wonder if this
is what my ex did the whole time.”
According to TMZ.com, the contempt hearing has been
scheduled for March 10. If found guilty, Nas will face jail time.
At press time,
the Queens lyricist’s anticipated collaboration album with Damian Marley
(Distant Relatives) is still slated for an April 6 release.
