(AllHipHop News) Troy Ave became a number one trending topic on Twitter today when Complex published an article claiming the Brooklyn rapper’s latest album only sold 30 physical copies in its opening week. According to Billboard, those numbers do not accurately depict Troy’s opening CD sales for the Major Without A Deal LP.

AllHipHop.com noted in a previous article about the topic that MWAD was released digitally on Friday, June 5. That gave the project a shorten sales week, because album sales are calculated from Monday-to-Sunday.

Billboard further points out that physical copies of Troy’s sophomore album were not released until June 9, and those units will be counted in the following sales week. Any CDs sold by retailers prior to that date were early sales which are referred to as “street date violation” sales.

A representative for EMPIRE Recordings/Distribution also told the publication digital versions of Major Without a Deal were released ahead of time in connection to Troy’s performance at the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert.

“Troy Ave had a big performance at NYC’s HOT 97 Summer Jam on Sunday, June 7th and wanted his fans to be able to get the album prior to that show,” explained the EMPIRE rep. “Thus, we released the digital version on June 5th, and then on June 9th the physical copies were released.”

Major Without a Deal was released via the independent label BSB Records through a distribution deal with EMPIRE Distribution. Reports that digital sales of the album were less than 5,000 copies for the week ending June 7 are reportedly accurate.
