Universal Studios originally reported the movie made $56.1 million, but that number was increased when the final totals came in. Straight Outta Compton now also holds the record for the largest R-rated August opening in box office history and sits in fifth place for the biggest August opening ever.
The F. Gary Gray directed picture highlights the lives and careers of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, MC Ren, DJ Yella, and other individuals connected to the iconic California Hip Hop group. Gray believes the movie will definitely impact N.W.A’s legacy.
“Hopefully, people get a sense of the history behind them, and it enriches Hip Hop and American history. It’s tied to a lot of things,” Gray told AllHipHop.com in an exclusive interview. “One or two hundred years from now people will ask, ‘What was going on in popular culture in the 80’s and 90’s?’ Hopefully, this is one of the films they turn to.”
