NBC To Remake "The Wiz" As Live Television Musical

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are set to produce. The duo handled the reigns of NBC’s previous TV musicals The Sound Of Music and Peter Pan. Tony winner Kenny Leon (Holler If Ya Hear Me, A Raisin In The Sun) will direct the presentation, and Cirque du Soleil is involved in the production as well. The Leon directed Wiz will then move to Broadway in 2016.

“We love this yearly tradition and we’re more excited than ever to not only bring another Broadway musical to America’s living rooms, but also see it land on Broadway as well,” said NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt. “It’s a natural next step for our live musical events, and we’re so pleased to be in business with this award-winning creative team and Scott Zeiger, president and managing director of Cirque du Soleil’s new theatrical division. Cirque’s incredible imagination will help bring the fantasy world of Oz vividly to life and give this great show a modern spin on the age-old story we all love.”

The original The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical “Wonderful Wizard of Oz” opened on Broadway in 1975. The play won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. The film adaptation of The Wiz was released in 1978. It featured an all-star cast including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Lena Horne, and Richard Pryor.

NBC’s decision to recreate The Wiz later this year comes on the heels of the massive success of the Hip Hop musical soap opera Empire. The Fox drama attracted an average of 16.5 million viewers for its two-part season finale on March 18.

A$AP Rocky Talks Police Killings, Iggy Azalea Criticism & Not Wanting To Be Called A Rapper

(AllHipHop News) A$AP Rocky is preparing to release his sophomore studio album At. Long. Last. ASAP sometime this year. The Harlem representative spent time with Complex to converse about his upcoming work and his life.

Rocky spoke about several topical issues such as abuse of authority by police, the backlash his ex-girlfriend Iggy Azalea has received, and why he wants to be referred to as an artist and not a rapper.

On his new music:

This is more free than I’ve ever been. I’ve never been this free making music, ever. I’m experimenting, listening, and looking for different sounds.

On the state of America:

It’s f**ked up. That’s all it is. Cops killing people, people killing cops. It’s all f**ked up. I think it’ll all change soon. I think people with a badge—or not—are gonna stop abusing authority across the world, and learn to appreciate one another. For real. [Smiles.] All they need is weed, some love, some good sex, some good-ass music. I’m talking about a night with something exotic. I’m talking a night with like an African-Moroccan-half-Swedish-quarter-Italian-part-French-Parisian. Mhmm. But she got the African booty, though! She got caramel skin, but you can tell that like, she got a little bit of vanilla in her, though. You feel me? [Laughs.]

On the criticism of Iggy Azalea:

That [situation with Iggy] is unfortunate because nobody wants to be portrayed that way. I’m quite sure she doesn’t. I think she works hard like the rest of us. Silly or not, 300 million people like to watch it on YouTube, so who the f**k are we to say anything?

It comes with the game. If she fake on something, somebody is going to call her bluff. That’s life. I’m not looking at it from a standpoint of “I used to be boning this chick’s back out.” I’m looking at it [as] “She’s just a person.” You can’t bluff. You gotta just be 100. That’s all I could really say. The question is: Was she not being 100 about something?

On being an artist versus being a rapper:

There’s a difference. Let’s be clear on that… But I feel like nowadays, the term “rapper” doesn’t mean anything honorable…

When you walk through hotels in foreign countries, they assume you’re either an athlete or a rapper. It’s almost like: Rappers are becoming the new GED way out of things.

Rich Homie Quan Denies "You Not" Is A Diss Directed At Young Thug

Wale Discusses Drug Use, Battling Depression & Wanting Some Respect

(AllHipHop News) Wale has had his fair share of hot head moments. He got into a very heated argument with a Complex writer. He yelled at a Toronto Raptors commentator on live television. He got into a physical altercation with a wrestling fan at a WWE event. All of these outbursts may have been the result of the DMV rapper struggling with his own inner conflicts.

Wale opened up to Billboard about his battle with depression. “The Matrimony” rhymer revealed he began taking pills to deal with his emotional issues.

My confidence was shot, so I’d be taking whatever to keep me in a good mood, to get me in the right mood for an interview. I’m not going into the details as to what I was taking, but there’s definitely something for that. Just like there’s a f**kin’ app for everything, there’s a damn pill for everything. Or something you can pour in your glass. I was depressed not being where I wanna be in my career when I’ve put the work in. I wasn’t sleeping. I was drinking all day and I didn’t have anyone to go to. I couldn’t fight it. Those are some of the demons I talk about on the album.

The Maybach Music Group member also talked about not receiving the critical acclaim and industry respect he feels he deserves.

I gave this my all. I’m not trying to whine about being critically acclaimed or getting in the door, but it breaks my heart. Everyone says, “Be patient. It’ll happen.” But all signs are showing, “No, it won’t happen.” I’m okay with people not liking my music but provide an intelligent reason for why you like or don’t like something or you’re a hater or a d**k-rider. This is my fourth album. I want some respect. I want to go to a party and not have Katy Perry tell her security to move me out of the f**kin’ way. We do the same thing. I know there’s no union in the music industry, but have some respect. I want people to be like, “Your album’s just as good as Kendrick [Lamar]’s or Esperanza Spalding or Beck .” I work just as hard as them.

Wale’s fourth studio LP The Album About Nothing hits stores today (March 31). The project features appearances by J. Cole, SZA, Usher, and Jeremih.

The group has launched a Kickstarter:

For the last decade, we’ve been independent artists, free of a record label interfering in our creative process. This will be our first De La Soul studio album in eleven years. We’re excited and ready to create. It’s been essential that we find ways to fund, record and release new music. Typically the fans have been the ones who support and appreciate our vision, so using Kickstarter and giving our fans the opportunity to be a part of the process just feels right. We see Kickstarter as a home for creative minds and a wonderful platform; where people who believe, respect and see the vision, can support an idea and make it a reality.

Backers will have the opportunity to receive rewards from a personal email from the members ($5) to a t-shirt pack/CD with bonus track ($55) to  n autographed pair of the 2015 De La Soul Nike Dunks/an autographed limited edition colored vinyl ($500).

Kevin Gates Is Not Opposed To Fighting Women

Photo via Kevin Gates Instagram

Kevin Gates is not against sleeping with his cousin, speaking out about Obama, and lately he is not opposed to fighting women either. Gates got into it with a group of girls during his recent Michigan show, and as the night went on he fought with a different girl during the same show. Allegedly, a few girls started grabbing him, and he decided to go after them. His security had to pull him back in from the crowd. Even if the women were harassing Gates, why not let security handle it before deciding to fight women?!

For all of the Illuminati believers, the emergence of Tidal and it’s power players may be all the confirmation they need that most of the music industry are a part of a strange society. Madonna, no stranger to expressing her opinion, took to her Instagram to defend the Illuminati accusations being made. She said:

“If you refer to Tidal as Illuminati, you are paying us the highest of compliments. As I’ve stated before it is another name for “The Enlightened Ones” a group of scientists, philosophers and artists that emerged after the dark ages. They changed and shaped the world for the better! Do the research and find out for yourself!”
