Neuroscientist & Psychiatrist Are Promoting Using Hip Hop To Treat Mental Illness

(AllHipHop News) For all the negative societal issues that often get fairly or unfairly associated with rap music, neuroscientist Dr. Becky Inkster at England’s University of Cambridge and psychiatrist Dr. Akeem Sule, a Wolfson College associate, have started the social venture Hip Hop Psych to help treat mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and depression.

“There is so much more to Hip Hop than the public realizes,” Inkster told The Guardian. “It is rich in references to psychiatric illnesses that have not been properly explored and which could be of enormous benefit to patients.”

Inkster and Sule view patients being able to use Hip Hop as part of their therapy by writing and rapping lyrics. They could possibly see medical students learning about mental health issues through the art form as well.

According to Inkster, rappers have already been using their craft as a form of healing. She believes some Hip Hop performers have a tendency to suffer from depression and other mental health problems because of their upbringing.

“Many key rappers and Hip Hop artists come from deprived urban areas which are often hotbeds for problems such as drug abuse, domestic violence and poverty, which are in turn linked to increased occurrences of psychiatric illnesses,” added Inkster.

Veteran emcee Pharoahe Monch actually tackled the issue of mental illness on his latest album PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Earlier this year, Monch discussed his own battle with depression with AllHipHop.com.

“‘Losing My Mind’ and the title track are actual accounts of me dealing with a bout of depression where I had been hospitalized with asthma. The attack at the time was real severe, so the amount of medication I was receiving was pretty harsh,” explained Monch. “After leaving the hospital, I went from taking the medication intravenously to pills, and I was just bombarded with not being able to sleep and overall not being able to process anything. I just remember being like ‘what the f**k is happening to me?’”

Hip Hop Psych will be covering artists like 2Pac, Kendrick Lamar, and J Cole at the upcoming Cambridge Festival of Ideas event on October 20.

Bone Crusher Says Modern Rap Is Leading To A “Race Of Retardation”

(AllHipHop News) Does today’s rap music stand up to the creative output of Hip Hop of the past? That’s a question that has become a standard part of the discussion about the culture for years. Veteran Atlanta rapper Bone Crusher sat down with VladTV to talk about the current state of Hip Hop.

[ALSO READ: EXCLUSIVE: MC Wars Say Keith Murray/Fredro Starr & Bonecrusher/Mike Jones Battles Still In The Works]

“We’re not being more creative. We’re now dumbing down. Once you start dumbing down something that needs to be creative, you start to lose,” stated Crusher. “People are starting to not even rap no more. They’re starting to mumble on songs… Now you’re getting a race of retardation.”

The conversation began with the “Never Scared” rapper being asked about white artists in Hip Hop. Grammy winner Macklemore’s name was brought up, and BC later responded to the Seattle-based rhymer’s success.

“You better get mad that Macklemore is winning, because Macklemore did exactly what he was supposed to do,” said Bone Crusher. “He just came in with a creative product that sounds good and he’s winning. You can’t get mad at him for that. You only get mad cause you didn’t do it.”

DJ Quik Addresses Lil Wayne & Chris Brown’s Connections To Bloods Gang

(AllHipHop News) There has long been a claimed association between music artists and the Bloods. Two of those performers that have been connected to the Los Angeles based street gang are Lil Wayne and Chris Brown. During an interview with Sway In The Morning, West Coast legend and longtime Bloods affiliate DJ Quik was asked about Weezy and Breezy’s alleged Piru ties.

“It’s kind of honoring, but it’s laughable too at the same time,” said Quik. “They don’t really know what that s**t is about. We took that s**t way seriously. We were trying to survive through that s**t. They got it too easy.”

Quik went on to say that anyone in the industry that is claiming Bloods really needs to be about the lifestyle. The Midnight Life album creator adds artists should not use the “red flag” as a marketing ploy to get street credibility, because there are individuals that have real issues with Bloods and will test them.

Suge Knight Shooting Suspect Now Known

Suge Knight may just see some form of justice in a case where he was shot 6 times during a MTV Video Music Awards after party.

Sources with TMZ have revealed that police have already established a suspect in the case that saw 2 others shot in addition to the former Death Row mogul over the summer.

Police have been talking to witnesses to the point where they think they have their “man,” but they don’t have enough to charge the suspect. They continue to look for a witness or witness to testify that they saw the shooter.

L.A. County Sheriff’s investigators also seem to have video tape that corroborates these witnesses.

The Odd Side: The Week of The Producer

Have you ever looked for a sound that’s different in hip hop. Sure, we already have artists like Kanye West, Drake, and Rick Ross that are changing the game in little ways. However, there’s a plethora of artists that have left the normal realms of nice rhymes and  dope beats to create a sound that’s oddly new to the genre. With EDM producers collaborating with rappers, rappers taking undefined steps in their sound, and Danny Brown collaborating with damn near everyone, Hip Hop is merging into something weirder, but it’s remarkable. It makes you wonder, where hip hop is really going, and where’s music going to be in the near-future? Welcome to “The Odd Side” a new weekly column that will emerge you into this world of hip hop.

This week, dynamic electronic producers SBTRKT and Flying Lotus released their anticipated albums Wonder Where We Land and You’re Dead, two albums that both show a darker side to their productive talent more than ever. While Flying Lotus  Even though SBTRKT and FlyLo have their own  musical style, but both producers didn’t shy away combining  it with a respected rapper.

Flying Lotus has to be one of the dopest producers you didn’t know you’ve heard before. His music has been heard on Adult Swim, along with brief shorts for his video “Zodiac Sh*t” and the birth his rapping alter-ego, Captain Murphy. The LA-based producer has worked with a ton of rappers, and even did a collab with Erykah Badu. Flylo’s newest project, You’re Dead, implements jazz with his euphoric instrumentals. The album tries to illustrate the concept of life after death, and the video for his single “Never Catch Me” featuring Kendrick Lamar shows you just how. You’re Dead is a pretty brief album, but it’s a breath of fresh when wondering where producers are going with only their beats.

SBTRKT is an electronic producer that has taken his computerized sound to new environments with his new album Wonder Where We Land. Tracks like  the singles “Temporary View” and “NEW DORP NEW YORK” are upbeat and incredible, but Wonder Where We Land has a darker tone compared to SBTRKT’s self-titled debut album. Along with a new sound, comes new features, and the masked producer brought in some very interesting artists for this sophomore LP, including A$AP Ferg and the up-and-coming ATLien, Raury. Although this may be the first two official rapper-collabs for SBTRKT, he’s remixed MIA’s XXXO and Drake also rapped over his production for “Wildfire”.

Whether you like both producers, only one, or neither of them, this week was definitively their week. Both projects received critical acclaim, and their fan base loved what the final projects came out to be. For some of you reading, this may be the first time you’ve heard these producers ever in your life, but this won’t be the last. Make sure you look out for next’s week’s post for The Odd Side.

Iggy Azalea Curses Paparazzi with Ebola

In the past, Iggy Azalea has managed to keep her cool in the midst of drama but when it comes to paparazzi, every celebrity has their breaking point.

After rapping up some food shopping, Iggy turned up on the paparazzi in a supermarket parking lot for invading her personal space. After the photographer claimed he had been spit on, and may possibly have Ebola or Aids because of it, the rapper, walking out of the supermarket, let rounds of slurs and curses out at him. “I hope you have Ebola, I hope you die, you’re a f###### c###,” She said nonchalantly as she pushed her cart to her car.

While still arguing with the paparazzo, Iggy Iggs reaches her limit and tries to run her cart into the man. A woman who appears to be a part of Iggy’s team, pulls the cart away. The rapstress ends the argument by adding, “Being a musician doesn’t give you the right to sneak into a supermarket and take photographs of somebody buying eggs. That’s not a public space, it’s private. You’re inside a store taking pictures of people. It’s not okay. It’s not cute. And next time, I will have people with me that will do something to remove you.”
