The 10 Best Stand-Up Comedy Routines About Hip-Hop

The late great comedian George Carlin once argued that anything could be funny, and comics have always been able to draw humor from everything that the world has to offer.  Hip-Hop is no exception.  In its rich history, people in it and things about it have been obvious choices for comedic material.

And with the recent announcement that legendary stand up comedian Chris Rock would be hosting the 2014 BET Awards in June, AllHipHop.com decided to put together a list of the funniest stand up routines related to rap.

Rap is very serious sometimes, but these jokes prove that it isn’t a bad thing if it gets made fun of every once in a while.  Because like music, laughter is also a universal language.  And so, what better way to bring people together than by pointing out the funny in something that so many of them have identified with?  It all just goes to show that we as people have more in common with each other than we often give ourselves credit for.

Hip-Hop can be hilarious.  And when it is all said and done, who doesn’t like a good laugh?

10). Tom Segura: While the premise to this routine is  about shouting with a Black dialect, the fact that White comedian Tom Segura mentions shouting that way around Big Daddy Kane makes an already funny bit even funnier.  And even though Segura isn’t speaking to a Hip-Hop audience, he puts it best when he says, “If you don’t know who Big Daddy Kane is, you can go f**k yourself.”

9). Hannibal Buress: One of the demographics that some rappers make music for are strip clubs, and Hannibal reminds women at those clubs to dance to those songs because they are better suited for  who they’re dancing for.  And to conclude the bit, he makes fun of Odd Future for rebelling with decreasingly rebellious acts.

8). Greg Giraldo: Starting at about 45 seconds in, when Giraldo brings  up Lil Jon, the issue of misogyny in Hip-Hop, rappers on MTV Cribs, and Hip-Hop video girls, it’s as if he saw Thugnificent on The Boondocks and then wrote his material.  It’s just as funny as The Boondocks too.

7). Steve Harvey: After Steve tips his hat to old-school soul music in 2000’s The Original Kings of Comedy, he points out how Hip-Hop doesn’t have love in it like the music of his generation does.  While it isn’t really funny, it’s a great transition into him talking about his problems with rap concerts.  And that is.

6). Jeff Ross: Comedy roasts usually find speakers ripping on the dais as much as the person being roasted, but, in this case, Jeff Ross spends most of his time making jokes at the expense of the man of honor – Flavor Flav.  It’s all in fun, and Flav is laughing right along with everyone else.

5). Mike Birbiglia: Everyman comic Mike Birbiglia discusses the increased anger in Hip-Hop and how it is often unnecessary.  Additionally, he cites Busta Rhymes and Jay Z as two of his favorite emcees.  However, Birbiglia also points out that he can’t tell jokes the way Busta raps and opts against playing Scrabble with Jay.

4). Neal Brennan: In this routine, Brennan, a White guy, discusses having Black friends and how the N-word is used on a frequent basis around him.  He then talks about how he was first introduced to the term via N.W.A and follows that up with a very humorous “where are they now” dissection of the group.  Brennan was a writer for Chappelle’s Show.  And after hearing this, it’s easy to understand how his talent and perspective was a perfect fit for it.

3). Aziz Ansari: On his debut album, Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening, Aziz tells a story about hanging out with Kanye West.  It doesn’t all present Kanye in the most flattering light, but it seems that he was able to laugh at himself in this case… Aziz later made a cameo in the 2011 music video for “Otis” alongside ‘Ye and Hov.

2). Daniel Tosh: Tosh.O gets laughs for its online video clips, but the host Daniel Tosh also adds very colorful commentary.  While he has certainly addressed rap music on more than one occasion, his short stand-up and Web Redemption of the “Average Homeboy” have his best jokes about Hip-Hop thus far.  Props to Bizzy Bone for appearing in the Web Redemption segment too.

1). Chris Rock: Considering he co-wrote and starred in CB4, it’s inevitable that Chris Rock would address Hip-Hop at some point in his stand-up career.  And in his 2004 Never Scared special, he does that and then some.  Rock expresses his passion for rap, takes it to task for the ignorance that some of it projects, and then explains why the government hates it.  It’s hilarious and insightful and a wonderful homage to a genre of music that started in the Bronx and would eventually go on to be a worldwide phenomenon.

Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine Facing Lawsuit From Alleged Co-Founder Of Beats Headphones

(AllHipHop News) The pending sale of Beats Electronics to Apple has Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine riding high as they are likely to cash in big from the deal. The major business move is going to greatly enhance the net worth of the two music industry insiders, but there is another self-described founder of Beats claiming that he is owed some headphones money.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Steven Lamar is seeking legal action against Dre and Iovine for breach of contract. The founder of Jibe Audio claims he was the brains behind the Beats headphones marketing concept, and he took the idea of celebrity musical artist-endorsed headphones to Iovine in 2006.

“Lamar’s concept envisioned a partnership between technology that would provide a superior audio experience and an iconic product design and brand identity promoted by a well-known and respected music artist,” states Lamar’s cross-complaint. “Iovine proposed that Dre be the celebrity musical artist to endorse the headphones.”

The complaint also suggests that part of Lamar’s original proposal was to sell Beats products in Apple stores. Beats eventually partnered with Monster for distribution, and Iovine and Dre were to receive a 20% royalty from the deal with Lamar/Jibe receiving a 5% royalty.

A 2006 lawsuit filed by Dre and Iovine was settled with Lamar and the design firm Pentagram splitting a promised 4% royalty from unspecified headphones sales. The defendants were accused of trying to produce their own line of “Beats” headphones.

Lamar states Pentagram’s Robert Brunner negotiated a separate deal with Beats. As a result, he and Jibe have been cut out of the royalty stream agreed to in the settlement. This led to Lamar suing Dre, Iovine, Beats, Pentagram, and the Hinrichs & Associates law firm.

Forbes Changes Controversial Title Of Iggy Azalea Article

(AllHipHop News) Forbes magazine’s recent feature article on rising female rapper Iggy Azalea received significant backlash, but not because of the content of the piece. It was the article’s headline that had critics speaking out.

[ALSO READ: Tyler The Creator Says Iggy Azalea “Stinks”; Iggy Responds]

The Azalea story is now titled “Hip-Hop’s Unlikely New Star: A White, Blonde, Australian Woman,” but it was first headed with “Hip Hop Is Run By A White, Blonde, Australian Woman.” Those ten words led to complaints ranging from lack of knowledge of the culture to “click baiting” to a Caucasian author (Hugh McIntyre) attempting to “white-wash” Hip Hop.

Forbes later changed the headline and offered the following update:

The title of this article has been changed from its original version — “Hip Hop Is Run By A White, Blonde, Australian Woman” — because it did not accurately reflect the content of the piece. The author offers sincere apologies to anyone who was offended by it.

While Iggy Azalea was not responsible for the title of the story, The New Classic creator has also faced criticism for being racially insensitive. Fellow femcee Azealia Banks and others took issue with Iggy’s lyrics on the song “D.R.U.G.S.” where she rapped, “Tire marks, tire marks, finish line with the fire marks. When the relay starts, I’m a runaway slave-master.”

Banks was upset at the idea Iggy was referring to herself as “slave master.” Iggy later apologized for the lyrics saying it was “tacky and careless.”

Juelz Santana Reportedly In Talks To Sign With YMCMB

(AllHipHop News) The long-time working relationship between Juelz Santana and Lil Wayne is reportedly close to becoming an official partnership. According to VladTV, Santana is in “serious talks” to sign with Wayne’s label Young Money-Cash Money.

Neither party has made any official announcement about the new deal as of yet. If and when Santana joins YMCMB, he will become part of a roster that includes Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tyga, Christina Milian, and several other artists.

Wayne and Juelz have teamed together on numerous tracks in the past. The duo has discussed releasing a joint project called I Can’t Feel My Face for years. Santana told Vibe earlier this month that the Young Money boss requested he join him in California.

“Wayne told me to come out to L.A.,” said the original Dipset member. “I’m definitely looking forward to going out there and getting some things done. I don’t know what those things exactly are going to be yet.”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Lil Durk Reality Show?

I don’t know how real this is, but I got a tipster that suggested that Lil Durk would soon have a reality show on VH1. The details to this are scant, but his TV story could allegedly be chronicled with his mother, sister and other relatives. Sounds like Jim Jones 2.0 in the reality world with Mama Jones! Do you think Durk would make for a good reality show? They have Waka on LHH ATL so anything is possible.

On another note…

Some have suggested that Joseline was hacked in those tweets about Stevie J. Maybe she was. Maybe she wasn’t.

50 Cent claims that he was not invited to his son Marquise’s birthday party. He also told her on Instagram that her “free ride” was almost up as he will no longer be required to support his son financially.

Ben Affleck has been working out religiously so that he is cut and lean when he starts off as Batman in the next Superman movie.

Willow Smith is still chillin with the dude Moses Arias, the dude that’s way older than she is. Remember? They were photographed in the bed together and sparked off a small s**t storm of controversy. She, Jaden and some other friends went to dinner with each other recently. By the way, Will and Jada are allegedly being investigated by child services in LA.

Epic Fail of the Day.

Damn, sis. Did you have to put this on YouTube?

The Bizarre Rap Career Of Macho Man Randy Savage

Everyone knows who “Macho Man” Randy Savage is, right? Even if you aren’t a fan of pro wrestling, those damn Slim Jim commercials still resonate within our souls today. “Snap into a Slim Jim, YEEEEAAAAH!” made that crappy processed meat treat sound somewhat desirable thanks to the oddity known as Randy Savage. He was as captivating as he was peculiar. An aberration to the norm, everything about him demanded your attention.

As for fans who grew up watching pro wrestling, Savage was the bad guy you loved to hate and the good guy you adored. The funny thing about Savage is that whether he was a face or a heel, he was always the same exact character. Whether he was in or out of the ring, he was the same guy. You never caught Savage breaking character because Savage probably never believed he was a character.

It is not known if, at some point in his life, Randy Mario Poffo became Randy Savage or if the “Savage” was simply a personality trait that was suppressed through his younger years and found comfort in the eccentricities of professional wrestling.

Before the days of social media and the ever seeing eye of the internet, there was a lingering feeling that who Savage was when he was wrestling was the exact same person he was when he wasn’t. He always appeared to take everything seriously. Which is why when he decided to release a rap album, it felt like we weren’t supposed to laugh out loud in fear that he would hear us and drop that signature elbow drop on our chest cavity.

It’s not like wrestlers haven’t found themselves in the studio before. But they treated making music much like they did their in-ring persona. You didn’t take Vince McMahon’s “Stand Back” seriously, nor did you ever think that Koko B Ware was really considering a music career when he sang lead on “Piledriver.” When wrestlers did make music, it was to serve the sole purpose of becoming their entrance theme and/or to exist in a fictional wrestling universe where everyone is hip to the game (Hulk Hogan made an album too, but that deserves it’s own column).

Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Mona Scott Young Shut Down Joseline?

Mona Scott Young is a G. And in true G form, she’s calling the shots. Now, when you deal with artists and entertainers, you have to have a firm pimp hand.

Well, yesterday Joseline went in on her spouse Stevie J aka Stebbie and accused the man of beating on her. WELL, she said Mona was trying to stop her, but she went on an posted it. Well, I just happened to be checking the tweets and stuff and I saw that them tweets were deleted! I guess Mama Mona did exactly what Joseline herself thought was gonna happen.
