Once the nation’s 4th largest metropolis, the City of Detroit has filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy.
The city is said to have over 18 billion dollars in debt that it can not pay due to population flight, mismanagement, and loss of tax revenue. According to The Detroit Free Press at freep.com, the filing will begin a 30 day-90 day process to discover whether it can truly declare bankruptcy officially, and to determine claimants who might be entitled to the city’s limited settlement resources.
Once the Automobile Capitol of America and home to the Motown Sound, as well as a strong hip-hop scene, Detroit has experienced population flight at an unforeseen rate shrinking from a populous of over 2 million to barely 700,000 residents.
“The fiscal realities confronting Detroit have been ignored for too long. I’m making this tough decision so the people of Detroit will have the basic services they deserve and so we can start to put Detroit on a solid financial footing that will allow it to grow and prosper in the future,” said Michigan Governor, Rick Snyder. “This is a difficult step, but the only viable option to address a problem that has been six decades in the making.”
Rap artists have been responding to the filing on Twitter largely by retweeting the story as run on news sites. However, Slaughterhouse member and long-standing member of Detroit’s hip-hop community, Royce Da 5’9″ stated: My city has seen many lows and many highs.. I’m proud to represent Detroit no matter the financial status..
Detroit’s bankruptcy filing is the largest municipal filing in U.S. history.
What the hell?
I’ve heard some weird things, but I never heard a person seek to be permanently disabled BY SURGERY. Right now, Chloe Jennings-White, 58, already lives her life as a paraplegic. WEIRD. But, even weirder is the fact that she wants to have surgery to make it official. Peep this from News.Com.Au:
London-born Chloe Jennings-White uses a wheelchair and lives as if she is a paraplegic despite being completely able-bodied and a passionate skier.
The 58-year-old, who now lives in the US with her wife Danielle, said she had wanted to be disabled for as long as she could remember.
But it was only around five years ago that her unusual condition made sense when she was diagnosed with Body Integrity Identity Disorder.
The rare psychological condition makes sufferers feel they want to be disabled.
Ms Jennings-White told The Sun the only thing stopping her from getting the surgery, which would leave her permanently disabled, was a lack of money.
She said she had even tried to have accidents so she could lose the use of her legs and that her surgery dream would be “the happiest day of my life”.

This summer TVLand kicked off the second season of Cedric the Entertainer’s sitcom The Soul Man also starring Wesley Jonathan, Niecy Nash and Jazz Raycole. While last season debuted to over 1.9 million viewers, the Hot in Cleveland spinoff has been a success this summer. The show is centered on a former R&B singer turned minister named Boyce Ballantine, who moved his entire family to St. Louis after taking over his father’s church. The character of Reverend Boyce originated on a second season’s episode of Hot in Cleveland in which Cedric guest-starred eventually making room for Wesley’s role on the show as the reverend’s younger sibling.
Niecy Nash (Reno 911) stars as the reverend’s wife, Lolli. The show also features John Beasley (Everwood) as his father, and Jazz Raycole (My Wife and Kids) stars as Cedrick the Entertainer’s daughter. With the season underway, AllHipHop got the chance to speak with “Stamps,” Ced’s younger brother on the show, played by Wesley Jonathan.
Take a quick read of our quick Q and A with the up and coming talent Wesley Jonathan and make sure to check The Soul Man on Wednesday’s at 11/10 CST on TVLand.
AllHipHop: Tell me about your role in the Soul Man.
Wesley Jonathan: I play “Stamps” the younger brother of Cedric “The Entertainer”. He’s a carefree, doesn’t take life’s responsibilities too seriously, witty, often times silly – but a fun guy and cool character to play as a whole.
AllHipHop: So you get to joke around a bit in role, how has your character evolved from last season?
Wesley Jonathan: Primarily from a physical perspective; gained a lot of muscle mass, and they factored it into my character, making it more of this seasons focus for me as well.
AllHipHop: For those who are unfamiliar, where did you get your first break and how did you end up on Soul Man?
Wesley Jonathan: Got the call….Went in read the role, they liked me and Cedric’s chemistry when we read, went back in for a network read through and got the job.

(AllHipHop News) The Magna Carta was a historical document marking the first time the King of England’s power was limited by his subjects centuries before Jay-Z sold his to Samsung.
Jay-Z visited the 898 year old document at Salisbury Cathedral in southwest England for an hour according to officials at the cathedral. Young Hov also met the cathedral’s dean Rev. June Osborne who said Jay was “a delightful guest.”
The cathedral is showcasing the original Magna Carta next to the artwork for Jay-Z’s chart topping Magna Carta Holy Grail.
In related news, Jay-Z might have changed his name and He changed his name and WE N E O it. Last night (July 17th) the editor of BillBoard Joe Levy sent out a message on his personal twitter informing the world that Jay-Z dropped the hypen from his name:
Breaking: Jay Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was.) Copy editors: take note.
— Joe Levy (@RealJoeLevy) July 18, 2013
The editor soon noted that while Jay’s label has confirmed the drop of the hyphen there have been inconsistencies in its usage:
@wesleyverhoeve Didn’t take anywhere. NYT, all media, fans. Or the cover of BP3, for that matter. iTunes credits “JAY Z”; cover says “JAY-Z”
