“I love the game, I love the hustle, man… As long as n*ggas is feeling it, a n*gga like me could hustle it. That’s my gift in life, ay, you know?” –Mitch, Paid in Full
It’s impossible to believe it’s been 10 years since Roc-A-Fella Records released the movie, Paid in Full.
The film was heavily themed on money, power, and respect – the key ingredients to every ‘hood classic ever made. Based loosely around the events surrounding the 1980s Harlem drug kingpins Azie Faison, Alpo, and Rich Porter, Paid In Full and its director Charles Stone III brought out explosive performances by rapper Cam’Ron and Hip-Hop-flavored actor, Mekhi Pfifer. Wood Harris would shine in the film and later captivate us as “Avon Barksdale” on HBO’s “The Wire”, also directed by Stone.
AllHipHop.com takes a look at how Paid In Full changed the game through videos, lyrics, “Money Makin’ Mitch, and even a few rap names:
Young Jeezy’s “Soul Survivor” featuring Akon – When the song came out, it was explosive on its own merit. But, it was the visuals had all the dope boys going crazy about the video.
As a movie, Paid In Full has stood the test of time – 10 years later, and everyone from Meek Mill to Curren$y are still referencing the movie.
The character “Mitch” alone seemed to make a profound impact on viewers. His scene has been sampled by numerous artists, from Wale’s 11/11/11 mixtape, which features a snippet from the movie, to Ghostface Killah featuring Trife da God’s “Hustle Hard” lyrics.
On Meek Mill’sDreams and Nightmares, the young MMG star explodes on the intro to his debut album by referencing Mekhi Pfifer’s character, Mitch.
On The Diplomats’ “I Really Mean It”, Cam’ron even made mention: “First role ever/ I killed Mekhi Phifer…”
Ultimately, Paid In Full shows the rise and fall of three drug dealers and how the game is loyal to no man. It seems the love of the game will never change, and the hustle will never stop! Most rap music is a reflection of what’s happening in communities across our country. Perhaps Paid In Full’s genius was the glimpse it offered into the mindset of what’s really good in the ‘hood.
Editor’s Note: Good googly moogly! 2012 was a year for the books – one that saw Beefs & Battles return heavy to rap, the momentous results of a sputtering Presidential Election, a monstrous East Coast storm, and two of the year’s best rap albums from artists nearly 20 years apart in age. (Oh, and a possible end to life as we know it on December 21, according to the Mayan calendar!) Stick around for the entire month of December for AHH’s 2012 Year End recap…
2012: The Year of the Ratchet
The end of another year is nigh, and it was a great one. As with any year of late, Hip-Hop puts its proverbial stamp on the language with phrases that, with time, become overused and cliched. Check out AllHipHop.com’s “Top 5 Over-Used Phrases to Leave in 2012”:
1. “RATCHET”
The Urban Dictionary does not take it easy on “Ratchet Girls” defining them as: “A diva, mostly from urban cities and ghettos, that has reason to believe she is every man’s eye candy. Unfortunately, she’s wrong.” Ouch. Through (over) use this year, “ratchet” began to describe anything that used to be called “ghetto.” Trashy weave? Ratchet. Still own a BlackBerry? Ratchet. Big Drake or Chief Keef fan? Ratchet.
Ratchet got a big shout-out on the summer hit, “Bands A Make Her Dance”, when Juicy J., pointed out that ratchet girls did possess one thing that he just couldn’t resist. So, where did the word start? We aren’t sure…possibly in Chicago. But this video, “Ratchet Girl Anthem” from Emmanuel and Phillip Hudson, definitely helped speed it’s popularity along. Here’s hoping “ratchet” and “ratchetness,” the phrases and the behavior remain in 2012.
2. “YOLO”
What started out as part of the hook for the song, “The Motto”, quickly turned into a hashtag overkill to explain away all kinds of reckless behavior. In April, The Washington Post declared YOLO, “The Acronym You’ll Love to Hate.”
In the article, Robyn Dexter, campus editor of the Eastern Illinois University’s newspaper, Daily Eastern News stated, “When I see “YOLO” in a tweet, I know instantly that something unintelligent and cocky is going to follow,” she wrote. “There’s nothing wrong with taking risks in life and trying new things. I’m totally for that. But there’s a fine line between living your life to the fullest and making spur-of-the-moment, completely irrational decisions.” We agree. You may only live once, but if you live recklessly, you may not live long.
3. “IT’S A MOVIE.”
Ugh… this one isn’t even fun. We’re not sure of the exact origin of this cliche, but it definitely got old quick. “It’s a Movie,” because a popular saying among artists and promoters to imply that their event, album, song, was so awesome that it was like a film. This was a lame cliche, and we hope it dies a quick movie death.
4. “SWAG”
Here’s an oldie but goodie that…Just. Won’t. Die.. As long as people keep using it, we will keep adding it to the list in the hopes that it will eventually fade. Swag is one of the most overused phrases in Hip-Hop that is so cliched, it is now becoming the opposite of its very definition. #Swag is showing up in usage to describe things that are silly and corny, versus describing that which is unique and cool as a cucumber. We hope this is a sign of the death of a new word. We are, in fact, actively working on something to replace it. #Stiff? #Loopy?
5. “MOLLY”
Hip-Hop loves its recreational drug use. The culture that almost overwhelmingly supports the marijuana industry and grew up selling crack is now – if you let the music tell it – popping Mollys (and sweating).
Molly is a mimic of the drug Ecstasy and like its older sibling, it releases seratonin and dopamine, making the user feel spacey and in a word, “good.” As a created street drug, it does, of course, have its side effects up to and including death. Molly used to be a White girl’s name. Let’s return it to its rightful owner.
And there you have it – our recommendations for over-used phrases that we HOPE will stay in the year 2012. We recognize that for every one we get rid of, another can pop up in its place, which is OK with us. We’ll just kill it next year. In fact, that’s just #Loopy.

(AllHipHop News) Today (December 4th) marks the five-year anniversary of the tragic passing of one of the South’s most renowned and influential artists ever, Pimp C, one half of the Port Arthur, Texas duo UGK.
“Not enough words to describe how I feel. 20 years after we started, and 5 years after you left us, what UGKhttp://instagr.am/p/S0H5wVDQyl/,” long time friend and 1/2 of the UGK duo Bun B said.
Some of Houston’s finest took time to remember Pimp C, including Slim Thug and Chamillionaire, paying their respects to Pimp C.
“One of my favorite Pimp C songs u probably never heard it http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wzAHrp8ApZk …” @SlimThugga
“RIP to Pimp C. Probably wouldn’t have been a Me without him & Bun B. Damn sure wouldn’t have been a Ridin’ Dirty.”
Breeding Ground Artists from Houston especially influenced by Pimp C, tweeted favorite lyrics, acknowledged Pimp C’s influence and Tweeted pictures remembering Pimp C and all he stood for.
“#RIPPimpC One of the reason I do this music…” said Breeding Ground Artist KillaKyleon.
Today Pimp C is not only being remembered by those not only from the south and Houston, but all across the Hip-Hop community.
One example of this was the outpouring of support that Noreaga had for Bun B, remembering Pimp C.
“Pimp c always made me laugh and every time I was around pimp he always taught me something rest in peace 2 the pimp @BunBTrillOG Im here4u,” Noreaga said.
Taylor Gang rapper and long time member of Memphis’ Three Six Mafia, Juicy J also took to Twitter to remember “The Pimp,” saying, “#RIPPIMPC#UGK4LIFE.”
T.I. still doesn’t have a final release date for his upcoming album, Trouble Man: Heavy Is The Head, but he has already announced that he will be following up that album with a new album proclaiming his “King of the South” self appointment. The upcoming album will be a sequel to Trouble Man and is rumored to be called Trouble Man: He Who Wears The Crown.
In a recent interview with Ashley Outrageous, T.I. talks about coining the term”King Of The South” and says that he wil decide when his reign is over and he will be the one to choose and crown the next king of the south. Check out what he said below:
“Eh listen, man, there’s no denying or disputing of that,” Tip said when asked if he still feels he is the “King of the South.” “Honestly, before me the term ‘King Of The South’ didn’t even exist. Just like when you think of freedom for black people, you think of Abraham Lincoln. Although there will be another King of the South one day, I’m about my wits to know that. However, that will happen when I say so. I’m going to determine [who it’ll be]. I’m going to determine when that happens and who it happens for.”
Do you think T.I. and only T.I. will determine who the next king of the South is? How about the fans? What about the snow man?
Who do you think the next king of the south will be?
Today is Jay-Z’s 43rd birthday. Happy Birthday, Jigga! The man himself revealed a few of his favorite things about the Barclays Center, where his Brooklyn Nets play, in a recent interview with GQ. During the interview, Jigga exposed that he had “fought” the NBA on a number of things, including the herringbone style floors on the court. According to Jay, he got the last laugh and proved the NBA wrong. Find out exactly how far he had to go to do it below:
The jerseys: “All-black everything! And the lettering–the typography reminds you of the old subway. It’s classic.”
The court: “It’s herringbone, which is crazy. In fact, the NBA fought me on it. They said if it gets shot on TV, the lines will mess up the screen. I’m like, this ain’t 1988–we’ve got HD. We ended up taking it to the old arena in New Jersey to test it.”
Barclays Center: “It’s beautiful, amazing, really well-done. It’s just classy. It’s still an arena, so there’s only so much you can do. But for an arena, it’s actually really beautiful.”
Jay-Z also dropped a documentary about the Barclay’s Center today on his Life+Times website. The documentary, entitled Where I’m From, follows Jay from the inception of the arena to his groundbreaking arena opening concerts:
Side note – Jigga’s better half, Beyonce also has her own documentary on the way and has just released the teaser trailer for the upcoming HBO special. Beyonce directed this project herself, and we hear that she used a lot of her personal footage from her laptop and her personal home videos for the documentary. Check out the teaser trailer below:
Maybe this will finally put an end to those surrogate mother rumors. Show that belly, Bey! Oh, and hopefully Bey will finally reveal a clear image of her and Jay-Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. The little girl is nearly one, and all we’ve gotten was the initial photos and those grainy paparazzi shots. The documentary premieres on February 16 on HBO.

Meek Mill is a stud in these streets huh, who would have ever thought that?! His name is being thrown around as one of the “almost 20 dudes” that Rita Ora allegedly cheated on Rob Kardashian with. Yesterday Rob went on an epic twitter rant about Rita’s not so kosher sleeping habits. Check out his tweets below:
Well Meek Mill must have heard about Rob’s venting on twitter and tweeted his own cryptic message that is being reported as a response to the Rita Ora rumors:
Hmmm, I suppose it could be in response to Rita Ora and Rob Kardashian, but I think there are more sinister intentions here. I think Meek Mill’s tweet is meant for Chris Brown and Rihanna. The two have been on an instagram love fest lately posting photos of the two of them seemingly after getting it in (if you know what I mean) and smoking on that Keisha.
Rihanna also posted the photo of her below with a “collar” on along with the caption “He told me not to give it away.”
These two kids are crazy. So who do you think Meek Mill is subliminally tweeting?
(AllHipHop News) Miami rapper Trina hosted an exclusive release party for her new mixtape “Back 2 Business” last night (December 3), in Miami, Florida.
A number of rappers were on hand at Club Mansion to support Trina, including Bronx rapper French Montana, who serves as executive producer of “Back 2 Business.”
Trina took time out of the release party to discuss the mixtape with AllHipHop.com and how she linked with French Montana.
“We went into the studio, just vibing and listening to the records,” Trina told AllHipHop.com. “He [French] asked me if I was working on my album, and I said ‘of course’ and it was just like instant chemistry. He played me a bunch of tracks and unreleased music and I liked the sound and the direction. He was like let’s work together let’s make it happen and he made it happen.”
Trina’s “Back 2 Business” mixtape is a prelude to her sixth full-length album, which will be her first official release in over two years.
Trina also has a high-profile role in an upcoming talk show named “Tiny Tonight” on MTV being hosted by TI’s wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris, Tamar Braxton and Claudia Jordan.
Check out Trina talking about her new mixtape “Back 2 Business” as well as her plans for 2013.
When I heard Katt Williams got arrested AGAIN, I thought it was something old. The brother had just slapped up a Target worker and rolled out on a Rascal scooter! What else can happen? It happened.
Katt reportedly got into a fight in a Seattle Bar and was doing everything from throwing cigarettes in peoples eye to tossing rocks at cars! But, what caught my eye ewas the fact that they said that Suge Knight bailed him out of jail AND is Katt’s tour manager!
What the?
Why does this now sound eerily familiar. Now, this is the first I have heard of this situation, Suge as Katt’s tour manager.
But it appears this is true. Unbeknownst to me, Suge has been with Katt for sometime. He’s even pulled him off the stage when the comic was clearly on stage high as a MFer. Peep the video below and you can see Suge getting Katt under control. Apparently, they told him that he can’t get so high in Oakland.
(AllHipHop News) A number of celebrities took to Twitter to celebrate the birthday of Sean “Jay-Z” Carter. The Roc Nation mogul is celebrating his 43rd birthday today (December 4). We the last 2 soldiers still standing from our era!” Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons labeled Jay-Z an “inspiration.” “Love the poets (rappers) from ‘jesus walks’ to ‘f the police’ the rappers make me smile. Happy bday to jay z my favorite rapper today.”
Producer Pharrell Williams is selling his Miami penthouse in the swanky Bristol Towers. Pharrell is asking $16.8 million for the oceanfront condominium, which was purchased in 2007 for $12.5 million. The residence, which occupies three levels, has five bedrooms, 6 1/2 baths, a home theater and views of Miami Beach, and downtown Miami.
Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons will be honored by the Producers Guild of America (PGA) with the Producers Guild’s 2013 Visionary Award. Simmons is being recognized for his philanthropy and charitable work and as a film and television producer, who provides opportunities to new talent. Simmons’ television show “Def Comedy Jam” as well as his role as a UN Goodwill Ambassador helped him earn the 2013 Visionary Award. “I’m sincerely humbled that the PGA chose me to receive a Visionary Award,” Russell Simmons told AllHipHop.com. “Just to be in the room with all those in the industry is a blessing.” The Producers Guild represents over 5000 members who work in the film, music and television industry. The award ceremony will take place Saturday January 26 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
