If excellence is even an option, why settle for anything less? You are great right now! Anything you put your mind to will be yours! An Open Letter To Denzel Washington

This story was originally posted on MommyNoir.com as “Pieces Of A Man By Chuck Creekmur: Dear Denzel Washington.”

Denzel Washington is at the top of the list.

“What list,” you’re asking yourself with your inside voice. I know. Well, I have a very short list of people that I look up to and, quite frankly, serve as faux role models in this world of entertainment and celebrity. To be honest, I like how these gentlemen have aged and maintained their style. Denzel is the number one dude, along with others like Clooney, Will and even Tom Cruise.

Presently, the ubiquitously classic Mr. Washington is featured on the cover of the style issue of GQ magazine. I was one of the first people to send a tweet out a couple of weeks ago – in the most manly way possible – gushing over the coolness of the cover.

The glorious cover touted Denzel, almost 60, with his hair all salt-and-peppery and in a suit as sharp as a ninja’s blade. Inside, the feature story confirmed all that we already know about Denzel: He’s the modern Sidney, Cos, and Harry Belafonte. He is known as an African-American icon and the ultimate man of distinction.

But, since I sent that tweet out, something has nagged me and the only way I could shake it was to write this letter to Mr. Washington:

Dear Denzel,
I hope you don’t mind me using your first name like that. But, I’ve been following you for quite some time. I feel like I know you on some level. I love the moves you’ve made and even more how you’ve aged. Grace is a fleeting trait with just about everybody. But, I’ve got to hand it to you … you’re that dude. We never got to meet, but we almost did at boxing legend Butch Lewis’ funeral in my hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

But, I’m writing you about something else … frankly, something that concerns me. It was your closing remark in your GQ cover story, where you talked about Black men. You said:

“Take responsibility. One of the things that saddens me the most about my people is fathers that don’t take care of their sons and daughters. And you can’t blame that on The Man or getting frisked. Take responsibility. Look in the mirror and say, “What can I do better?” There is opportunity; you can make it. Whatever it is that you choose, be the best at it. You have an African-American president. You can do it. But take responsibility. Put your slippers way under your bed so when you get up in the morning, you have to get on your knees to find them. And while you’re down there, start your day with prayer. Ask for wisdom. Ask for understanding. I’m not telling you what religion to be, but work on your spirit. You know, mind, body, and spirit. Imagine—work the brain muscle. Keep the body in tune—it’s your temple. All things in moderation. Continue to search. That’s the best part of life for me—continue to try to be the best man.”

Now, I’d like you to take a look at this picture I took in Cincinnati, OH.

(Via: Chuck Creekmur / Instagram)

I thought of you when I snapped it outside of Elementz, a venue dedicated to helping urban kids (keeping it real: budding Black men) on the right path. This young brother was with this beautiful girl, who I assume is his daughter. She never strayed far from him. She seemed happy. He seemed deep in thought, stressed even. This image prompted me to write this letter.

I work with a number of Black men of all ages, backgrounds and social statuses with varying degrees of influence. We huddle up often in support of each other. We build on how to be better men, better fathers, better significant others … just better. This particular event we spent a full day talking to folks about making change in their community through the process of voting, particularly on a local level.

Rumors EXCLUSIVE: REAL VH1 Gossip Girls Cast Revealed!

EXCLUSIVE!

Real cast of “Gossip Girls” revealed!

Yo! This one won has been recently spread all over the internet and I almost posted it, but decided not to. Why? I don’t know. But, what I do know is that I have the exclusive scoop who will be featured on the VH1 show tentatively called “GOSSIP GIRLS.” The show is based on bloggers, journalists and media people in NYC.

Now, it was previously reported that Angie Martinez, Necole Bitchie, Miss Info and some other unnamed ones. But that has changed. Here is the line up.

-Kim Osorio of The Source
-Angela Yee of Power 105
-Sharon Carpenter of Global Grind
-K. Foxx of Hot 97
-Jas Fly
-Ms Drama (who at one time was doing stuff for AHH!)

Necole isn’t in it. I heard she was almost in it but either quit was too late to the party. I heard blogger Sandra Rose was never asked to be on the show, although she says she was. No argument, but that’s what my source said. I heard there is going to be a lot of play between the Angela Yee / K. Foxx situation! Wow! All these chicks are fly too! Not the ratchet type! We’ll see when those cameras come on.

As of right now, the show is just a pilot, but I am told VH1 brought in Mona Scott to run the situation based on her work with the “Love and Hip-Hop” franchise. What do you think of THIS?

When are they going to get a show I can be on?

RICK FLAIR!

Kim Osorio

Angela Yee

Sharon Carpenter

K. Foxx

JasFly

Ms. Drama

Oh yeah…it ain’t over MFers.

Nephew to the Blues: Rapper Skeme Releases New Album "Alive and Living"

Inglewood, CA rapper Skeme released his new album Alive and Living on October 16 via iTunes. As a young artist on the scene, Skeme is quickly rising up in the ranks on the West Coast as a diverse rapper that can create club music for the party people and straight Hip-Hop for the lyrical heads.

With guests like Kendrick Lamar, Iggy Azalea, Schoolboy Q, and Problem, Alive and Living definitely needs to be on your list of new albums to check out. AllHipHop.com recently caught up with Skeme for a few quick words:

AllHipHop.com: I had no idea that the Blues and Rock ‘N Roll legend, Howlin’ Wolf, was your great uncle.

Skeme: I’ve got the music roots, man [laughter]. I can remember my grandmother telling me that he was an honest man. If he said that he was going to do something, he either did it or was going to die trying. He was a good man from what I hear.

AllHipHop.com: From what you know of him, was he accurately portrayed in the movie, Cadillac Records?

Skeme: That seemed about right to me. That’s what most of my other uncles are like [laughter]. I definitely thought that was kind of dead on.

AllHipHop.com: Music is on your blood, but you kind of got a late start in this game….

Skeme: Right. I started when I was about 16 or 17.

AllHipHop.com: Compared to a lot of other artists, that’s late. Artists usually tell me that they started rapping during their early teenage years.

Skeme: There wasn’t much to do but be out in the streets or go hoop when I was growing up, but I turned out alright. I just grew into [rapping]. Not to toot my own horn, but I’ve also got a hell of a work ethic. I’m in and out of the studio on the regular or as much as one should if they want to be good at this. Practice makes perfect. I practice my a** off with this rap sh*t, and try to become as good as I can possibly be.

AllHipHop.com: Aside from practicing, what else do you think has helped you to catch on so quickly?

Skeme: Having a presence in the streets and relationships with artists that are bubbling out here on the coast. Always being a real dude and being genuine. As life goes on, my raps are going to get better, because I keep things on the up and up.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Pusha T Reveals "New God Flow" Diss Record Was Aimed At Birdman!

Pusha T has not been shy about expressing his dislike for the boys over at Ca$h Money/YMCMB. Their beef has gone on for quite some time now and has thankfully stayed on wax. His issue has primarily been with Lil’ Wayne and Drake, but now in a new interview with Hip Hop Wired, Pusha reveals that his “New God Flow” diss record, was really aimed at Birdman! Check out what he said about it below:

“New God Flow” was about, in my view, something I read in a Birdman interview that I didn’t like. He said something like “G.O.O.D. Music isn’t nothing” and it had nothing to do with Wayne or Drake per se. That was Birdman saying whatever he wanted to say and that was the basis of where all of my lines came from. Everybody else was on their love of Hip-Hop s**t.

It looks like this beef is about to heat up again Let’s just hope Lil’ Wayne can come up with a better record than “Ghoulish”.
