EXCLUSIVE: Immortal Technique on How to Conduct Yourself Around Police (or Gun-Toting, Self-Appointed Neighborhood Watchman)

The news headlines are packed to capacity with ongoing stories about the death of 17-year-old Florida teen Trayvon Martin. The angles are spinning on the troubling story of his February 26 murder at the hands of George Zimmerman faster than the public can keep up with. But two things about the story are certain – a young man is gone, and there is a growing racial divide in America.

The Hip-Hop world has used its voice vigilantly in the past to raise awareness about the ills going on within our communities, and the Trayvon Martin case is no different. Jasiri X, Plies, and Mistah F.A.B. have all dropped tribute tracks in the past two weeks to spread the word about what they see as an injustice with Zimmerman having not been arrested. Still, there aren’t oodles of rappers willing to put their necks or lyrics on the line in the name of justice for the deceased young man from the infamous hoodie incident.

Immortal Technique is different. But then again, he always has been.

The rapper/activist from Harlem spends his life mostly on the road, touring and leading charitable movements in places that most of us would never dare venture to. His outspoken perspectives – created in part by his family’s international background, a stint in prison, and trips to war-torn Afghanistan and beyond – are the stuff of rap legend.

AllHipHop.com sat down with Immortal Technique yesterday in New York City to get his special take on the story that has us all up in arms. Watch the video and share your thoughts on why Trayvon Martin wasn’t just a Black boy:

Trust us. You should come back for more of our interview with Immortal Technique in the coming days. He’s got a “revolutionary” documentary on the way!

Boxing Legend Don King Contextualizes Trayvon With History

One could say Don King has seen it all, been through it all as Mobb Deep once said. The famed boxing promoter has more than made his mark in history and lived through it just the same. A controversial figure, King has been accused of everything from having mob ties to financial infidelities. But, he’s also an outspoken political force that has never minced his words. His perspective is that of an 80-year-old that has toiled to the highest mountains of success yet still has passionate, pointy opinions about the murder of one 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

“He (Trayvon) is the victim of 400 years of thinking that Black people don’t count. Even if, the guy walking down the street is being profiled, but whatever happened, the police would have arrested the guy. Even if it was self-defense, he would have been acquitted through the (legal) process. This guy ain’t been arrested yet. A man shot a man down in the is day and age – 2012 – killed the boy, and nobody has done nothing about it…not even a reprimand. And they are going to take his word at the scene and say it was self defense. What was Trayvon going to shoot him with? His whistle? He’s eyeballs? Reckless eyeballing? But, you can’t take that light when you say reckless eyeballing, because in the books it says reckless eyeballing – that’s when a black man looked at a white woman. It was interpreted as lewd or lustful. That’s reckless eyeballing, punishable by death. You can’t say what (Trayvon) was doing, but that’s that old, antiquated thinking and falsification of teaching of superiority and inferiority. Manhood is what the whole struggle is about. They could not treat a man like they treated (Trayvon). There is a victimization in associating us with negative conditions.  Therefore, you don’t like the conditions, you don’t like the Black man. The color line, that is the problem…the institution called slavery. That was the method of keeping you from getting your rights and to be able to justify it legally and religiously. Revenge ain’t going to get it. Non-Violence is the way to go, (but) only if you are teaching. People are mentally enslaved and they are not looking for a parole.”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Trayvon Martin and the Master P Connection

By now, we’ve all heard about the tragic death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida at the hands of an overzeaolus neighborhood watchman named George Zimmerman. More and more details about the case are emerging. Some good, bad, and some controversial about the character of the young man, as well as the intent of Zimmerman.

The Twitter handle to Trayvon’s now deactivated twitter account was @NO_LIMIT_NI**A, a phrase that rapper/actor and business man Master P made famous, as well as the partial name of his record label. One has to wonder, did Trayvon aspire to be a businessman like Master P? Did he have dreams of reaching his full potential, and did he believe that there was truly “no limit” to what he could achieve? These things we will never know.

In support of Trayvon, Hip-Hop has taken the initiative to speak out about his death and the injustice it feels he is receiving. Several artists have commented about the tragedy and even written songs speaking on the incident.

Below are three songs inspired by the Trayvon Martin murder, made by Plies, Mistah F.A.B and Jasiri X.

1. Piles – “We Are Trayvon (Trayvon Martin Tribute)”
Key lyrics: “I never thought wearing no hoodie, could cost your life / And I never thought you could just kill somebody and get out the same night”

2. Mistah F.A.B. – “God Don’t Love Me (RIP Trayvon Martin)”

Key lyrics: “The whole world wanna talk about Kony / But ain’t nobody speakin’ on the lil’ homie”

3. Jasiri X – “Trayvon”

Key lyrics: “Trayvon never gave his cousin his skittles / Missed the All-Star Game didn’t see another dribble”

Will Master P put a tribute song together as well? I hope so. The more we can do to shine a light on the case, the better.
