Rev. Al Sharpton

Critics Denounce Sharpton's Cash Money Content Deal

(AllHipHop News) Al Sharpton’s forthcoming memoir, The Rejected Stone, is being released on Cash Money Content to the shock of many. Sharpton was a very public critic of Lil Wayne, and hip-hop artists in general who for their use of profanity including the “n-word.” It was Al Sharpton who met with PepsiCo and the family of Emmett Till regarding the YMCMB rapper’s offensive lyrics referencing Till and framed in a sexual context. PepsiCo later released Lil Wayne from his endorsement with the company.

So, imagine the shock and awe when after years of animosity on both sides, Sharpton inked a deal with Cash Money Content, the publishing arm of Cash Money Records, Lil Wayne’s home label. The memoir, The Rejected Stone will track Sharpton’s personal evolution from a New York street activist to a political candidate and spokesperson for civil rights. Sharpton is also a media personality and host of PoliticsNation on MSNBC. The book will be released by Cash Money Content and Massenburg Media, in partnership with the Simon & Schuster imprint, Atria.

Carl Redding, a chef and former associate of Rev. Sharpton has penned an open letter to Sharpton calling for him to return the “blood money” he obtained from Cash Money. “As one who has spent years publicly crusading against the harmful effect of misogynistic lyrics on our young people, it’s clear that your decision to cut a lucrative financial deal with those who propagate such destructive images in our community, is the latest example of your failed leadership.”

The letter goes on to say, “I believe in my heart of heart that the Rev Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. would not have traded 30 pieces of silver to the likes of the Little Wayne’s of our world today as you have done by signing a piece of book deal paper with Cash Money… So Rev Sharpton, in conclusion of my Open Letter to you, I am publicly imploring you to end your business relationship with Cash Money and return the “blood money” that you have accepted from those very people who continue to have the highest disregard for our women and our community.”

Not a fan of Al Sharpton, but I don’t see a reason why he shouldn’t publish with Cash Money Content. It’s his personal choice. And if he believes this is the ebst place for his book why not go for it. It’s not like somebody would say. I’m not shooting Movies for Warner Bros, because they are also into violent action movies.

no but is like if david duke had a book pub company and martin luther king had his book published by said company because they offered the most money.

Two types, the jawnt that looks like the Eiffel tower, gushing oil out the top, is the jawnt that is full of oil, the jawnt that pumps, like Birdman covered up with that big a$$ star on his head…runs on oil.

The EROEI (*Energy Return On Energy Invested ) is like driving across country to fill up on $00.99 a gallon gas. You will use 2 tanks of $4 gas to get there.

The pumps run on gas & the minute it equals out IE: It takes 1 gallon of gas to retrieve 1 gallon, it gets capped or sold to a rapper.

The iLL part is….Baby’s well isn’t the only one running dry. The Saudis are investing heavily in offshore drilling & it isn’t because they like to spend 4x more to make the same profit.

Yo Baby just showed dude will do anything for money. The best way to get Sharpton or Jesse Jackson off your back is to buy them off.

  • best_believe

He’s a big hypocrite. In one breath Zimmerman is a racist. But then he’ll put money I. The pockets of one of the biggest companies that promote the hell out of black on black crime. Oh but that’s fine. The great Al Sharpton never made a big deal of black on black crime

    • dehova

Good point but who else could he have gone with? Also, from Cash Money’s point of view, this is a good thing. People might be critical of Rev Al but tell me who in the black community is there on the front line as much? Sometimes I think we seek perfection in people and really, that view is always going to be tampered with by media portrayal.

  • Wavpin

Black people cannot do business together? Cash Money promotes black on black violence I agree but is it a crime for them to sell books? All money is blood money anyway… the only thing that can save the black community is economic power. First step is to start doing business with black businesses. Why you all reacting like he signed a record deal?

    • DJ7

WE are our own worst critics and will search high & low to find fault in anything one of us do to justify the reasons as to why we’re not doing it….no matter who this brother signed a deal with…some smart dumb cat would of been up in arms about it…can’t win for losing….crab mentality at it’s best

      • NEWSKULL

indeed at both of y’all…. but on the real I believe he was part of the peer pressure that made Wayne lost his deal with Mountain Dew… so for him to sign a deal with them I mean shit is weird… but I guess he got a reason…. who am I to judge?

      • Terrance Goodman

No it’s just you can not be want to be placed on a pedestal n the. Sign with a company that displays the opposite or said beliefs.
But I expect no more from al or credo $ , bishop long types . Wolves / rappers without a album in sheep clothing

      • DJ7

Never heard the man ask anybody to place him on a pedestal…ever…just respect (and a check)…That appears to be your own personal assessment fam…If you don’t expect OUR brotha to do anything other than what he’s doing, may I ask, what’s your disposition? Who else (recently…past 25-30 yrs ) has garnered such wide spread media coverage and shed more light on the black experience than OUR brotha Al? , REGARDLESS if it’s for personal gain,…he does it…That my brotha, I refuse to hate on…Sadly, black men who champion your mindset will long for the days when OUR brotha is no longer amongst us…trust that…just something for you to reflect on while you got your hooks sunk deep on the man’s legs….knock it off…let ’em out the barrel!!!

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

uhhhhh you dont have to seach to heard to find fault in this lol ijs lol yall taking this wayyyyyyyy to far lol ….

      • DJ7

The point I was making has been made throughout this entire thread fam…you got eyes…I’m sure your reading and comprehension skills are up to par…just scroll up or down…your choice…bottom line, the bigger picture is it’s 2 black men supporting each other…if every black man, woman & child adopted this model, economic power shall be obtained….we’ve all agreed that’s what we’re lacking have we not?….if so, why are you and so many others being resistant?…can’t possibly be b/c brother Al is this so called saint and cash money an embarrassment right?..after all, according to the majority, they are both a cancer to black community right?..smh @ some of you cats thought process…listen, we have to start somewhere correct?..I know, sounds to much like right tho…as for anyone taking it too far…just look @ all these self righteous post…no solutions just more lip service….need I say more

    • Do you know any music label that does not promote black on black violence? Hollywood movies also show violence. Maybe it’s just because violence sells? Isn’t it the audiences problem to distinct between reality and fiction?

How much street cred does Al Pachino have?
How much street cred does DeNiro have?

Where are all over emotional Italians posting about those 2 guys

Where are all real Italians at going out Mafia Mob mode?

Take one look in a mirror every day. Can’t be too wrong.

    • RBG

exactly what i have been saying for years.whenever black owned companies make a good move someone has to try and tear it down.

      • brotha_man

this isn’t about white or black this is about representing and condemning one thing, turning around and shaking hands with the corruption that you work so hard to end.

sean bell, jena 6, trayvon, oscar grant…

      • IToldYoMommaYouAintSh_t

we always cover up our self hate with ‘this isn’t about white or black.’ Bruh…what company isn’t corrupt..Disney, Apple, who? Italians support each other criminal activity or not, Russians, Asians, Jews, Americans, because that money eventually comes back to the community. Why not us? Maybe he signed with the least corrupt book company we don’t know the ends and outs of it. We gotta support and believe in each other more, almost indiscriminantly.

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

lol @ itialians supporting each other criminal activity and etc…. lol yo its 2013 buddy lol itialians aint got nothing to support anymore all of thier biznesses have been brought out lol itialians got the same oppurtunity as some of these rappers who are on thier way out the game and thats REALITY TV lol… ijs … you are really reaching and caping here talking about the LEAST corupt LOL … first cashmoney records is a legit company its not corupt by anymeans LOL …. this is about branding … its the same reason why ross almost lost his reebok deal …. and the exact reason why wayne lost his pepsi deal …. its about BRANDING !! you dont claim to be an activist … and then go team up with the guy in atlanta that owns all the strip clubs to start a rally …. LOL … ijs it just doesnt look right and it damn sure dont smell right lol … if this is als attempt @ tapping into a younger demographic … i can dig it … and will be very surprise if he actually tapes into 1% of the young demographic over there @cashmoney why cause i dont see anybody over there supporting this project lol inlight of sharpton being instrumental in lil wayne losing his pepsi deal …… but i guess we shalll see …………………

      • IToldYoMommaYouAintSh_t

Yeah you got me LMAO I was definitely stretching…and it is wild he signed to Cash Money but all I’m saying is we are focussed on the wrong things out of everything that is going on right now. He signed a book deal with Cash Money…a bit odd but lets move on. I think I am just on a ‘Support Black Business’ vibe by any means even as wreckless as this one may seem. I’m just tired of the money not circulating at least once in our community so I see a black man work with another one and I’m like ‘cool’. I’m sure Al Sharpton signing to them won’t really help but I want to see more black partnerships and business.

      • RBG

how is it not about black or white? who are the people that have an issue with him signing to cash money publishing? further more do you know the dirt that penguin, and other such publishing houses are involved in? who has done an extensive research on these companies to know what type of dealings that they are in. last time i checked publishing houses don’t care what walk of life you are in. they will publish books from murderers, thieves, rape suspects autobiographies on some of the sickest people to ever live. so dont try using sean bell, jena 6 and trayvon in your fight to tear his business deal apart.

      • hoeyuno

I agree. people who can’t see the contradiction of al signing a deal with a self proclaimed 5 star general blood are dumb as fucc.

Maybe Al reaching out to Cash Money fans to inform them with a some knowledge, education, and civil rights history through a book. He probably would not reach as many urban/minority people through another company. I’m pretty sure Baby, Slim, and Wayne are making up (royalties from this book) from the lost Pepsi Deal. Both sides win! Who knows, this might be the first step to getting his Pepsi Deal back.

    • Terrance Goodman

I doubt it Al’s back ground shows that this vulture only exploits situations

      • OnlyFaDaReal

You have a point as well, but it’s still icing on the cake for him. More money, more attention, and more followers. They are all businessmen at the end of the day.

      • Terrance Goodman

        True

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

is there a such thing as integrity anymore ?? or better yet did it every exist in business lol #conflictdiamonds lol

      • OnlyFaDaReal

Real talk lol! It’s really hard to find business people (people period) that’s not shady when it comes to ethics, business deals, etc. Money is truly the root of all evil..or I should say the lack of money is the root of all evil!

    • dehova

I was just about to add this. You have to give information to those that need it the most

      • OnlyFaDaReal

        I agree!

      • ItGoesDownINtheDM

are wayne fans even checking for this book … that is the question lol …. it aint like wayne is promoting it lol …. that would make the difference …. with out wayne vocally promoting it fans arent just going to naturally gravitate to a book like this ……

      • OnlyFaDaReal

It’s hard (for us) to say if they are or not checking for it, but these are smart businessmen. I’m pretty sure they have looked at statistics, done market research, and considered other criteria based on past book sales from Cash Money Content. We all have different interest no matter how gangsta an individual claims to be lol.

  • Terrance Goodman

Pimp all been on snake shit. It’s a little known fact he snitched on lots if black leaders.
He shows when it’s $ time . Could care less about the black community . Fuk one leader we need to be all leaders n kings n then come as one.

    • ItGoesDownINtheDM

i think thats the point of his open letter … its like the preacher who supported nino brown in new jack lol … im sure cash money aint the only game out there … 50 cent has a book company also … or he could of used his name to bring an up and coming black owned book company to the forefront …. its so many ways he could of went with it ……. i mean im not against the cmb deal but i understand why some folks are wrong with that deal … thats why labels are looked as BRANDS … and the CMB brand clashes with everything the Al Sharptons brand is suppose to stand for ………..

      • IToldYoMommaYouAintSh_t

Word I agree with what you’ve been saying…I replied in the other post. You know where I’m at with it. There were many ways he could have gone but at this fragile point in time, I’m just happy it stayed in the family however dysfunctional that may be.

This is ignorant. Carl Redding doesn’t stand at the door of Amy Ruth’s in Harlem turning away all of the drug dealers & misogynistic hip hop artists who spend money in his restaurant. He didn’t NOT decide to open a restaurant in Atlantic City knowing that the entire city was built on corruption and illegal activity (bootlegging, racketeering, etc). Lil Wayne is disagreeable, but he still has a right to say whatever he wants to say in the United States of America. The company that cuts his checks should not be held responsible for his choices of expression. This is completely racial, because people of all races, including Black people, feel that the Black community needs to be treated the way you would treat a child. Everything we do is criticized, and broken down. Should we not purchase Sony products? Should we not watch movies produced by Universal? These companies also produce misogynistic music. This hypocrite has an entrée called the Ludacris. No disrespect to Luda, but I’m pretty sure he’s mentioned a hoe or two. The NYPD have deemed the Black community unworthy of having the same rights as other New Yorkers. I wonder who Carl Redding will call when he needs help.
