Malcolm X’s Family Blasts Nicki Minaj For “Looking A*S N*gga” Photo

(AllHipHop News) No looking a*s n*ggas but Nicki Minaj’s use of an iconic Malcolm X photograph has some very important people looking. Yesterday (February 14th), members of Malcolm X’s family and estate sent statements denouncing her use of the historic photo of Malcolm X looking out the window holding a gun.

Calling Nicki Minaj’s use of the photo that was featured in a 1964 issue of Ebony “disrespectful”, Malcolm X’s daughter Ilyasah Shabazz disassociated her family from Nicki’s actions. In a statement obtained by New York Daily News, Shabazz spoke on the controversy:

Ms. Minaj’s artwork for her single does not depict the truth of Malcolm X’s legacy, is completely disrespectful, and in no way is endorsed by my family.

Nicki Minaj responded to the controversy the day before Shabazz (February 13th) by removing the photo from her social media pages. She apologized to Malcolm X’s estate and then responded by addressing the hypocrisy in the treatment of the term “n*gga” in a statement on her personal Instagram account:

The word “n*gga” causes so much debate in our community while the “n*gga” behavior gets praised and worship.

And she’s one of the people endorsing it to gain wealth, yet she calls it hypocritical? if she was against it [which she clearly isn’t] she wouldn’t use it herself. She knows it’s kids buying her records, and not just black kids … Explain the meaning of the song to that little white girl who was on the Ellen show rapping the lyrics to her song a few years back, you know she’s probably mastered the words already [no pun intended].

I’m all for my people getting financially wealthy, but at what cost for the rest of the people who don’t have the same opportunities as themselves in life? That’s what needs to be addresses here, and the repercussions when you pull up at work and see your white boss in the space next to you listening to that song.

    • BakingSodaFree

I would LOVE to see black people react to stories of black teens killing one another day after day like they do to a George Zimmerman boxing match or Nicki Minaj using a photo of Malcolm X or saying the word nigga over and over.

That will never happen. Sad to say.

      • STFUUIgnants

Many black folks do, only to be criticized for speaking out. If you criticize gang bangers/drug dealers, they say its not their fault its an economic problem. If you criticize society for creating the economic problem, they say you’re trying to shield gbangers/d-dealers from taking responsibility for their actions. So to say blacks dont speak out is completely untrue.

      • $11625525

The kids need to be influenced at home, from a young age, so they resist that life in the first instance. That’s the problem, TV, Movies, Music and their classmates and friends in the street influence them a lot more than family do. There’s a detachment from the family unit and it runs in all directions … Too many people too happy to say “He/She will learn” and that’s not good enough when lives are at stake.

      • BakingSodaFree

The home is the most important place, I agree. The problem with the home is who’s in it, and who’s not in it. No fathers usually. Mother has multiple children with multiple sperm donors. There’s no structure in the Blk home. Of course not all but far too many.

We are in the worst state of mind than ever before as a ppl. I’ll catch hell for typing it, but shit the truth stings like a muthafucka.

      • Terrance

        Took courage to say that…

Looking ass niggaz…somebody spotted the hypocrisy yet ?

  • wickedjones

    she apologized already, geesh.

    • ZUBU

Fukk an apology the batch should have never done it, period! No excuse for ignorance, disrespect, etc. She knows her label mate Wayne just went through this speaking on Emmitt Till, then she turns around and does this. She knew what she was doing.
I say if she can’t respect our Black American Icons lets send her and her family back to Trinidad. I know she was born here but obviously she is disconnected with Black American Culture. I mean really she is from NYC and she doesn’t understand the importance of Malcolm X? I could maybe, maybe, just maybe see this happening if she was from Bumfuckk, Iowa or something but she from NYC. SMH……

      • wickedjones

        you gotta a point.

      • Abdelmajid Ibn Allal Bouloum

        hahahhaahahhaahahhahaah

  • STFUUIgnants

fukk these rappers and their bs apologies that are faker than politicians. So now she’s a victim? As if she doesnt glamorize the “nigga” behavior her self.

    • Abdelmajid Ibn Allal Bouloum

      so true

  • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

She apologized and what needs to be discussed is how the Nation of Islam is responsible for his death. Blacks killed X! That shi* still got me Fu(ked up! SMH! Niccas was simple minded back then but no where as now!

    • STFUUIgnants

Bc that hasnt been discussed for decades time after time? What does “blacks killed X” have to do with Minaj’s ignorance? As well as you didnt include the U.S. govt in that conspiracy.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Why is there always some clown Fu(k boy that has to be sarcastic?! Minaj can do what the Fu(k she want but why bring the Govt into this? Our own killed him for no reason with no outside agencies involved. Us as blacks like to say the white man was involved to make us feel some type of away. to me its weak minded. a spade is a spade!

      • STFUUIgnants

always some internet tough guy throwing the phrase fukk boy around….she can say what she wants? so can everybody else dimwitted “nigga” How do you KNOW the govt wasnt involved, you bring up something totally irrevelent to the subject but then think you can dictate the terms to be discussed. Go cook some crack or something real “niggas” do and stop trying to act intelligent

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Tough guy? I don’t need to be tough, just tougher than you, which im sure I am. Stop trying to deflect on what the real issue is, X got clapped from the Nation of Islam and you try to put the white man involved. I don’t do drugs or condone that Sh* fu*k boy, Notice how you assume im a thug that cooks drugs once I test you?! QUEENS!

      • STFUUIgnants

You dont know who is involved dimwitted nigga, anymore than anybody else. Who is deflecting, when Im responding to your usual ignorant nigga drivel lol. Everything you have said has been outside the subject, you arent too bright AND you’re NOT a thug…damn thats fucked up lol. You’re def not that tough in the logic or thinking department, not sure what criteria makes you feel you’re tough. Any “nigga” hollaring out their location & using jailhouse phrases is def limited in the intelligence area. Im done here.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

You the type to make a conspiracy out of everything, case in point. You more emotional than my wife, but she aint a Bit*h like you. QUEENS is where im from and where you would never come to talk that garbage, foh, u cornball!

      • Realist4200

“You more emotional than my wife, but she aint a Bit*h like you.”

        Noooice.

      • STFUUIgnants

lol the only “nigga” thats emotional is the one who is upset. And what do I have to be upset about. He never said anything of substance. That shitt wasnt even original, you can find that same line 10000000000000 times on the internet or in a rap song. But when a “nigga” isnt that smart, what other choice does he have, other than to spit some recycled shit. Talking about come to Queens…I grew up in the middle of the hood in Chicago…that doesnt mean anything to me tho. My self esteem dont get boosted by typing out Chiraq or some dumb shit. Poor lil ignorant niggas, you will learn one day, or maybe not. Watch he responds with some more recycled & hyper thuglicious emotional shit, bc original is like a new concept to him.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

I thought you said you were done you mad lil nicca! U doing too much explaining yourself to @Realist4200:disqus. WHats original today? Like what you said has NEVER been said before That’s not relevant. U new niccas is some weirdos!

      • STFUUIgnants i fell you dude. Fighting ignorants is even harder than intelligent ppl, they have their own truth

      • STFUUIgnants

        exactly

      • Realist4200

Dude he must be right about that emotional part – dafuq are you ranting on me for? I said one word and you wrote me a short novel. Goosfraba, amigo.

      • STFUUIgnants

my bad, I know making niggas read more than 2 sentences is like stepping on their new Lebrons. Nigga be like “I avoid books for a reason”. You figured I must be upset to take time to do that. Ah damn I did it again.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

damn he making you emotional too!

      • Realist4200

You’re not making me read anything. It’s on my time.

“You figured I must be upset to take time to do that.”

Or bored, manic, talkative, etc. – I didn’t put much thought into it outside of the fact that it was kind of ironic considering what Queens boy was saying about you.

I’ll give you a minute for a word of wisdom:

You’re not as smart as you think you are. Instead of being hateful towards the ‘ignants’ of the world, why not just let them wade into the ocean while you float away on your boat of intelligence? Oh.. Because you don’t have that boat of intelligence – you’re busy treading water with the rest trying to put them down to stay afloat.

  • ZUBU

When this story first hit I stated we needed to boycott this weird batch, now all types of groups are calling for a boycott and denouncing her actions. She is either dumb as heck or think that we the masses are, she tried to say she was talking about the people Malcolm is viewing. If that was the case she would have used Nigga in the plural form, she used it in the singular form because she was referring to Brotha/Minister Malcolm X.

  • Blaq_Boi

Come the f*ck on, we all know she wasn’t referring to X as the looking ass nigga. Folk need to get over theyself. She apologized and even removed the sh*t. People wylin like she outchea defending the artwork and refusing to take it out. Her and many artists like her put out garbage content, that’s no secret but this situation is being blown outta proportion.

    • hoeyuno

I agree. And I wonder if the Shabazz fam cosigned those “X” hats that kids were killing each other over in the early 90s??

    • Realist4200

She wasn’t referring to Malcolm X? It’s a picture of him looking out the window – was she talking about the guy looking in? “We all know..” lol.

      • Willie Stewart II

What lyric from the song do you think was directed at malcom x?

      • Truth Powell

What if it was a pic of Trayvon dead and the song was called “sleeping ass nigga”?
The song lyrics might not be about Malcolm X, but the choice to use that image for the song was in poor taste and disrespectful.

      • Realist4200

Do you not see the picture, of MALCOLM X – LOOKING out the window? Yeah, that one, the “artwork” for Nicki Minaj’s song that the article is about. Well that’s what the issue is raised over; Minaj’s use of his image, the wording accompanying it and the ignorance accompanying her. It’s a pretty easy concept to grasp – you’ll figure it out.

I didn’t listen to the song – You can enjoy it all you want though.

  • Lord Saltsworth McGinty III

This was clearly in bad taste. From a PR perspective, and I have worked in advertising for a few years now, I would have to question the thought process behind this. Who would think that this was a good idea? How many people had to approve that sh@t? Nicki has to be by far one of the most stupid motherf@ckers on Earth if she couldn’t foresee the backlash. Are these people really that dense?

  • Heart of a Slave, Blood of a k

Not a fan but it looks like nicki made a very real statement, ” The word “n*gga” causes so much debate in our community while the “n*gga” behavior gets praised and worship.”

    • STFUUIgnants

including her “nigga” behavior, so whats her point

      • Realist4200

        Exactly.

  • hoeyuno

Wayne disrespecting Emmitt Till was by far worse. But same label same game..they obviously wanted this controversy.

    • Blaq_Boi

Thank you… People stay disrespecting people but I think this goes back to societal double standards when it comes to females. Wayne took a minute to reply, Nicki did it on the same day. Give the female a f*cking break. SHE APOLOGIZED, f*ck more folk expect her to do?! I don’t endorse her content, but I don’t endorse gross victimization either!

      • hoeyuno

this shits spilt milk..especially compared to what’s going on in a Florida court right now..another trigger happy bigot about to walk…hopefully not though.

  • Guest

didnt malcolm x want to strap up tho? its not in the best taste but i dont see how its that disrespectful. the pic is more of an analogy saying he is ready for trouble

You do know they were trying to kill the guy right? You do know they eventually did right? Damn. smh

Malcolm fought for niggas to strap up against the government and the KKK. learn something dont get spoon fed from your masters. first thing you need to learn is English. Go read a book you illiterate son of a bitch and step up your vocab.

      • Myleage

i am not a foreigner i just think for myself and not hop on bandwagons that the public drives for you. Malcolm X told blacks that they should arm themselves for self defense just like the pic shows

      • Myleage

yea and maybe he should of been strapped. i dont see the point of your question. the pic details him preparing for the ppl and the government after him. he is armed for self defense. you should think before you comment cuz your questions makes no sense

Well Nicki, I guess you’re wrong again, because no one is praising or worshiping your n*gga behavior in regards to the use of this iconic picture. If you make a sequel to your song “stupid hoe” be sure to use a picture of yourself. That way it’ll have context.

  • Bryan Kyser

Nicki Minaj don’t like black people !!!! You NIGGERS !!!!!!!!

  • Jonathan Cayol

Nicki Minaj wants to sound smart & make a point making light of the word nigga & then bring up the way people glorify the nigga behavior & how its praised & worshiped but your going deeper into a rabbit hole of hypocrisy because you use the word nigga & you praise & worship the behavior so whatcha sayin in my EPMD voice . Aint you the one who brags about how you beez in the trap ? Try again Nicki Minaj & don’t think men & women are going to take you seriously with the word Minaj as a stage name indicating that you have sex with more than one partner at once . Buffoonery .

  • 4real 4real

The hip hop community is at fault here. We accept anything, when will the REAL hip hop heads stand up? She should feel like a piece of shit! You really think her camp didn’t know how offensive, disrespectfull to one of our heroes this is. I don’t care if they where looking to get people stirred up, you don’t play with the LEGEND. We don’t respect nothing anymore I’m tired of everyone saying we need to educate the youth…. Really? Back in the 60’s and 70’s nobody and I mean nobody would ever attemp to gain publicity by using a hero in a negative way. Ms. Minaj your lyrics, your appearance, what your image says you stand for is degrading to all. You sold your soul to the DEVIL FOR FAME like most of the artist in the game today. Get the paper by any means necessary huh? That’s not what the great MALCOM X message was about. I’m ashamed that stuff like this is coming from our community, HIP HOP was at one time the place where you went to get positive info on our heroes. What happen to this thing called HIP HOP, why is it so “F” up now, who’s to blame?

    • I blame the artists….We put them on a pedestal, they become successful, and then they become a representation of our communities….What should happen now is a call for our communities to ban this upcoming album from YMCMB to be sold in stores and online..

      • C. Rice

Ban it? This is America, you can just ban things because you dont like it. The better way to deal with it is assure every store has it…then just dont buy it. History shows that hurting pockets it the best way to create change.

    • Willie Stewart II

Being a real hip hop head and standing up doesn’t change anything in the music industry. The real problem is that hip hop heads are in the minority much like african americans. Hip hip has become commercialized by a bunch of greedy label execs and records get sold by appealing to masses of privileged suburban children who are fascinated with gansters and the thug life. Everything will become corrupted with time unfortunately.

  • Anthony Lewis

there is a such thing as a n*gger … something that has a past and
history … but there really is no such thing as a n*gga nor does nigga
describe the way a person act … what people do today been had a
description … its called immaturity … folks need to grow up … how
do you expect the youth to do big and mature things if the adults are
barelly doing those things themselves …… nicki is an adult herself that portrays in alot of instances immaturity … but im not gonna bash nicki because she does alot of mature things also … no one is perfect but i can respect her balance … shes just in one of those spaces right now where shes making mistakes …

  • Myleage

didnt malcolm x want to strap up tho? its not in the best taste but i dont see how its that disrespectful. the pic is more of an analogy saying he is ready for trouble

    • C. Rice

He got strapped up because people tried to kill him. It wasnt some wack ass rap beef. Her explaination is weak and for some broad like her showing ass every second she can trying pretend that she’s pointing out contradictions is laughable.

    • yesanditcounts

It’s disrespectful in the sense that Malcolm wanted blacks to arm themselves for revolutionary reasons. For there freedom. Most importantly a picture of Malcolm with the world n*gga any were around it should never, ever appear together. Malcolm was never that.

      • golder1

And somethingpeople dont report or know is that Malolm X and Martin Luther king used the word nigga all the time. In their everyday talk they would refer to their friend or themsleves as niggas. Do the research!

      • yesanditcounts

Please give me your source material that proves this! Books, links whatever. I know Malcolm would use the word to describe the mentality of some blacks, but know one can know for sure if they used it in private. Besides, your talking private conversations, I’m quite sure neither would use it in a title of book, song or etc.

      • golder1

Do the research yourself. People who had personal conversations with him said that word was part of his and Martin’s vocabulary and it wasnt to describe the mentality of blacks. FBI also has transcipts of a lot of their conversations. Just because they might have only used this word in private around friends and family doesnt make it better they never used the word in the title of a speech. Just like we use the word so did that generation.

      • yesanditcounts

“Do the research yourself. ” “People who had personal conversations said…” LOL! Sorry I have to call bullsh*t on this.

    • Daryl Fraser

Young bro. I respect your comment, but I suggest you do some research by either reading about Malcolm X or listening to some of his speeches. Use this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the man and I think you will have a better understanding of people’s disappointment of Nikki Minaj’s use of that picture.

  • Pingback: Malcolm X's Daughter Checks Nicki Minaj For Being Disrespectful -- Tha W()

  • Nicki Minaj was out of pocket and needs hands put on her.

This bish said “The word ‘n**ga’ causes so much debate in our community while the ‘n**ga’ behavior gets praised and worship. Let’s not.” And mofos really think she “slam-dunked” w/ that comment. This broad is the most coonin-est female rapper in history, wearing Blonde wigs, calln Black women chimpanzees & nappy-headed h0es. The only ones rewarding her are the puppeteers who put her up to this type of ish, the ones who determine what kind of music will be played..she is worshipped for her “n!gga behavior” and justifies it, blamin’ it on Black folk. So Black folk can’t call her out for putting “n1gga” and Malcolm together b/c Black folk use the word? This bish is WHITE in her ideology, the same as white folk who give Zimmerman and other murderers a pass cuz “Black people kill other Black people, what’s the big deal?”
To conjure Brother Malcolm’s image and put the word N1gga beside him, then try to pretend you referring to the people that aren’t shown in the picture outside the window?
Brothers, please don’t think real women are praising this broad cuz she tried to pass off the defamation of Brother Malcolm as feminist & empowering.

I dissed her in 2012 for her house-n1gga statements, soundclouddotcomslash adopefemalemc. Paradoxical Diss-Did It On Em is what it’s called. Black men & women out here getting murdered for knocking on doors, tryna get help after a car accident, for playing loud music, for walking home from the store, and this bish defame Malcolm?? She need her @ss beat, simple as that.

Her legacy will reflect a coon @ss broad who bleached her skin and her lyrics will be forgotten.

    • MeganPatricia

She doesn’t have white in her ideology. She has idiotic in her ideology.

      • The concept of “Black-On-Black Crime” finds it’s roots in white supremacy; a continuation of a media onslaught against Blacks to dehumanize us as self-destructive, justifying our incarceration, murder, and denial of basic human rights. When Black townships began springing up all over the place & Black people began taking political power in the country they were enslaved in, here came the caricatures (Mammy,Sambo,Coon, etc; Watch the documentary Ethnic Notions or the movie Birth Of A Nation). The KKK continuously lynched Black people, a public event that brought all classes of white people together, rich & poor, and the media portrayal of us as less than human has CONTINUED, giving way to the Michael Dunns and George Zimmermans. Black people continue to suffer inhumane treatment and murder, with our killers walking away free, JUST LIKE IN JIM CROW. Black-On-Black crime (the concept white folk lean on when we stand up after one of us is murdered by a white person) is a white ideology because it is a white invention; as I said, it finds it’s roots in white supremacy. This is not personal against YOU, this is the truth. It isn’t called White-On-White crime when a white kid bombs a marathon or shoots up a school, movie theater, etc., killing several people at once–most always given the “mentally ill” pass and a thorough probe of childhood to justify heinous behavior. Anyone non-white would be considered a Terrorist for the same behavior and anti-American in the country they built or contributed to. There isn’t a corner of the earth that hasn’t been hurt by white supremacy, this is bigger than personal offense.
