Norwegian Newspaper Says Tidal Is Inflating Its Numbers

IS TIDAL PLAYING GAMES?

(AllHipHop News) The numbers behind Jay Z’s streaming music service Tidal are being scrutinized by a Norwegian newspaper.

The Norwegian paper Dagens Næringsliv published a lengthy article on the streaming music service today (January 20), claiming the company has been inflating its subscriber numbers.

According to the report, Tidal only had about 350,000 subscribers in September 2015, the same month Jay Z tweeted that the service had reached one million users.

Additionally, the report claims Jay and Tidal have been touting the fact that the platform has three million subscribers, however when the label submitted an actual report to the major labels, it had closer to one million subscribers.

“We are excited that one year after TIDAL launched, we have surpassed 3 million subscribers globally,” a spokesperson claimed.

Jay Z knew the numbers were inflated after he bought the company, because a spokesman for Tidal claimed they were serving the former owners, Aspiro, with a lawsuit back in March.

That was the same statement that said Tidal had 3 million subscribers.

According to The Verge, the lawsuit has yet to materialize and Tidal has yet to release a new statement clarifying the press release issued in March, stating the service had three million subscribers.
