(AllHipHop News) Hip Hop mogul Russell Simmons stopped by Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning radio show yesterday to discuss race in the United States. The co-founder of the legendary Def Jam music label spoke about racism still being prevalent in American society, but Simmons held his most vigorous vitriol for New York City mayor Bill de Blasio.

While commenting on the need for legislative action on police brutality, Simmons stated, “Our police commissioner is bullying a punk mayor that we worked so hard to put in office. [de Blasio] knows his kids are at risk. He knows if a cop shoots his kids – and there is no footage – that cop’s not getting charged. That’s because there are no special prosecutors.”
Mayor de Blasio faced heavy criticism from the New York City police union following his remarks about the protests over Eric Garner’s death. Garner was killed in July 2014 from complications of a chokehold administered by NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo. A Staten Island grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo on any counts.
Edward D. Mullins of the Sergeants Benevolent Association police union and de Blasio met in secret in February to discuss the state of relations between the NYPD and the mayor. According to reports, the two sides agreed on a détente.
During his interview with Hot 97, Simmons expressed he is not pleased with the direction de Blasio has taken. He believes the mayor is complicit in keeping the unfair status quo of the police’s interaction with the community intact.
“Look at what they did to the mayor. They made him into a… He’s a b*tch,” added Simmons. “I was there when the animal rights community and the gay community got together and said, ‘Anybody but [mayoral candidate Christine] Quinn.’ We worked because he was a progressive, but he has not done anything. He’s a mouse.”
