Skilla Baby was still nursing wounds to his head, arm and leg when he decided healing fully could wait. Just a week after surviving a brazen attempt on his life, the Detroit rapper made his way to Compton College, determined to keep his promise to show up for kids.
Before the shooting, he’d shared a heartfelt video of himself praying, an eerie contrast of what was to come. But what could’ve sidelined most people became fuel for Skilla Baby’s purpose.
At the event, hosted by the Make Your Own Way Foundation, Skilla handed out clothes, spoke directly to inner-city students about education and urged them to choose a path outside of street life.
“Just a week after being shot Skilla Baby flew to Compton College to support the Make Your Own Way Foundation for inner-city kids,” his manager Roccett said, speaking exclusively with AllHipHop. “He gave away clothes and spoke to the kids about staying in school, staying out the streets, and being whatever they want to be.” Absent were his signature locs.
Despite Skilla’s team’s concerns for his health, he refused to sit this one out.
“We asked him to stay home and heal but he insisted that he be there and show up for the kids no matter what,” Roccett added.
This moment of resilience isn’t surprising for those who’ve followed Skilla’s rise. His name has become synonymous with gritty lyricism and raw authenticity, but he’s also made it clear he’s thinking beyond the mic.
In a previous AllHipHop interview, Skilla Baby expressed a desire to expand his artistry into film. “I want to get into acting one day,” he said. “Like really be in some movies, not just the rapper that pops up in one scene. I want to be a real actor.”
That long-view mindset now adds more weight to his recovery. Not just surviving—but evolving. Even with bullets still fresh under his skin, he’s showing he’s built for something bigger.
