Beyoncé Gets Atlanta In Formation With DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, T.I., 2 Chainz, Ludacris & More

Beyoncé delivered yet another electrifying performance on the third stop of her ‘Formation’ tour at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. A crowd of over 50,000 individuals were certainly in formation to see the living legend do what she does best: entertain! Beyoncé took fans on a musical journey as she showcased her vocal prowess taking her voice from velvety depths to airy heights accompanied by some power-strutting choreography. The show was brilliantly staged and choreographed as more of a masterfully constructed production than your average concert. Beyoncé used her classics and new singles to run through a range of emotions and themes including self-empowerment, betrayal, defiance, joy, sensuality, sexuality, redemption, and celebration.

Usually concert goers aren’t too enthused about those that precede the main act, but it’s a “Major Key Alert” when you have the one and only DJ Khaled opening your tour. DJ Khaled pulled out all the stops as he brought out Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Yo Gotti, T.I., Ludacris, The Dream, Kent Jones, and August Alsina back to back to perform their various hits. The energy was insane. It was almost as if those in attendance didn’t want DJ Khaled’s set to end just yet.

Their was a brief intermission in the show between DJ Khaled’s set and Beyonce’s. The LED screens flashed with highlights from her ‘Lemonade’ special and her Ivy Park commercials. Fans slid to the edge of their chairs in anticipation of the greatest living entertainer’s grand entrance. Before fans knew it, the guitar riffs that open Beyoncé’s “Formation” were heard and Beyoncé emerged on the smoke filled stage wearing her new signature wide-brim hat. Beyoncé said,

“ATL Welcome to the ‘Formation’ Tour. If you got all dressed up tonight say I slay. If you know who you are say I slay.”

By the time she sung her signature line,

“My daddy Alabama, mama Louisiana, you mix that Negro with that Creole make a Texas Bama,”

The crowd went nuts! Beyoncé and her phenomenal dance troupe certainly proved that they had “some coordination”. Queen Bey sounded off and picked the perfect song to open the show. Less than 30 seconds in, Beyoncé owned the moment, the night, and the Dome. ‘Yoncé reminded you that she changed the game when that ‘Lemonade’ dropped.

“I dream and I work hard I grind ’til I own it. I go hard; take what’s mine. I’m a star.”

Knowles transitioned into another one of her new songs, “Sorry”. As “Sorry” proves to be the ultimate “moving on” song, the women screamed in unison “middle fingers up” and “boy bye!” Fans couldn’t help but to also help Beyoncé sing, “You better call Becky with the good hair.” either. She then switched the energy up as she performed “Mine”, “Hold Up” and “Standing On The Sun”. Beyoncé delivered a heartfelt message before she sung “Me, Myself, and I”, as she told the women in the audience that God lives in all of them and as she stressed the importance of self love. She sung the record with so much passion and soul as she belted out,

“Now that it’s over stop calling me.”

Beyoncé’s use of a larger-than-life LED screen (that both rotated and split at times) and pyro effects on the stage were incredible. The larger visuals enhanced the viewing of the choreography as well as showcased various video montages that pieced together the story behind ‘Lemonade’ and her artistic as well as personal journey. Beyoncé played no games in regards to subject matter as she placed “Don’t Hurt Your Self” and “Ring The Alarm” back to back. Fans in attendance were pretty excited to see ‘Yoncé perform some of her choreography to O.T. Genasis’ “Cut It” as well. It was through her performance of songs like “Bow Down”, “Flawless,” “Feeling Myself” and “Run The World”, that fans were reminded that Beyoncé has been running the game for over a decade, and the diva is truly a force to be reckoned with.

It was exciting to see Beyoncé perform a mashup of her song “Rocket” and D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel) as the songs have been praised and noted for their similarities.

Beyoncé also paid homage to the late icon Prince with a tribute segment that included an illuminated purple stage as Prince’s “Purple Rain” played. Fans joined in by singing the classic hit and waiving their cell phone lights from side to side.

Additional highlights from the show included a performance of “Survivor,” “Freedom,” and “Halo” in water, and a performance of Beyoncé’s country hit “Daddy Lessons.” Beyoncé and her dancers often moved their performances from the main stage to a lengthy catwalk, seemingly to give more fans an intimate front row view of the show.

Like ‘The Beyoncé Experience’ tour, ‘Mrs. Carter’ tour, and ‘On The Run’ tour, Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’ tour was another one for the books. It has always been incredible to witness the interwoven nature of Beyoncé’s past classic hits and her new material on each tour. Beyoncé tends to let it be known that she has her own lane of R&B that showcases influences of funk, rock, pop, reggae, and hip-hop. Beyoncé let the thousands in attendance know,

“ATL, this is the best crowd so far on the tour.”

Seeing Beyoncé command a stage for two hours with “Flawless” execution and precision, her eclipsing Super Bowl cameo, and the deliverance of yet another surprise No. 1 album, are yet another reminder that the possibilities for Beyonce are endless. The Georgia Dome was filled with excitement, raw energy, empowerment, sensuality, and love as Beyoncé proved once again why she is heralded as a living legend, true artist, and prominent figure in music.
