Jay Furr Explains Why He Dropped Out Of School For Music

Jay Furr on why he dropped out of school for music, his first tape and much more.

No matter where you’re from, you’re going to take a liking to whatever it is you like.

Insert Jay Furr, who’s southern trap style you’d swear he comes from the East Coast.

In actuality, he’s a West Coast baby from San Bernardino, putting on for his city the best possible way he can.

Coming from the streets and turning his life for the better, the “Furrstyle” rapper describes himself as “just a young n##ga just trying to make it.”

A sucker for 808s and dark trap production, there’s something about a raw beat that triggers him to just go off.

AllHipHop: Talk about when you dropped out of school for music.

Jay Furr: School’s like… I was trying and s##t. I played football my freshman year then I tried to play again. By sophomore year, I got kicked off the team for grades and s##t at the school. I was fighting, etc. After that, it was over with. I didn’t like school, I didn’t feel like it was teaching me nothing. I ain’t like that s##t. But I mean, stay in school. Do what you have to do for your parents. School for me, I was off it. I started getting it on my own. Of course, I got in the streets trying to get my own bread. At that point, I didn’t need to go to school no more.

AllHipHop: At what point did you realize this music thing was forreal?

Jay Furr: s##t, last year. I started just getting around different people, different artists, just noticing that this what I wanted to do — more. I already wanted to do it, but I’d rather just get money instead of doing that. Being around more artists made me want to rap more and do more as an artist before I worry about getting money only. Last year December 2018, I started taking it real serious and put out my first tape Furr Season 1.

AllHipHop: Talk about releasing your first tape!

Jay Furr: It was cool, it broke me out as an artist to my followers that I had at the time. That was my introduction to them, so they know how I’m coming.

AllHipHop: What inspires you creatively?

Jay Furr: When I rap, I just like to talk about what’s going on. Either what I just did, what we have done, or what we bout to do, what we got the money for. s##t I talk about is s##t I think about. Whatever I’m on at that time, whether I could’ve been on it for a week straight or whatever, I’ma talk about it.

AllHipHop: Do you freestyle off the dome?

Jay Furr: Yeah, punch in.

AllHipHop: Who are your top artists?

Jay Furr: I don’t have no favorite artist, but inspiration though? Keef, for sure. Growing up, we would turn that on and act/feel like we from Chicago. s##t, we from San Bernardino. We trying to wear True Religions, white tees and Air Force Ones to school and s##t. I always pay homage to him, he started a lot of this s##t for sure. A lot of us are influenced by him.

AllHipHop: Favorite Keef song?

Jay Furr: Let me see, I like a lot. My favorite is probably “Everyday” or “How It Go.” I like “How It Go.” When “How It Go” came out, I was probably in middle school. That was the established Keef. We were getting a lot more of the autotune Keef, it was just hard.
