(AlHipHop News) Hip Hop duo Killer Mike and El-P gave an interview recently to answer a question about the main topic of discussion in Hip Hop over the past week – Kendrick Lamar’s verse on “Control”. While acknowledging that Kendrick’s verse is dope, El-P says it’s “crazy” that people are now getting excited over a rapper focusing on lyrics.

“It’s so funny to me to see people freak out. All these born-again Hip Hop purists,” says El-P. “Lyrics are important. No sh*t. Some of us been going for the throat our whole careers. Me and Mike, we listen to that sh*t, and we laugh, like ‘yes.’ Other motherf*ckers are sitting there sweating. Not us. We’re just like, cool, we got another one on our team.”
Some listeners have misinterpreted Kendrick’s motive with his rap as “beefing” with other rappers, but El-P points out that it was really in the spirit of friendly competition something that all emcees should be striving to do.
“It’s not the East Coast versus the West Coast,” adds El-P. “He just got on the track and ripped it, said what he wanted to. That’s what we do. That’s what everyone should do.”
“I’m just glad the culture is getting back on some rap sh*t,” said Mike. “I suggest a lot of y’all sucker-ass rappers get together, form a tag team, and try to compete, because right now you’re looking at the greatest tag team walking the face of the earth.”
Killer Mike and El-P released their collaborative album Run The Jewels in June.
