Lupe Fiasco Says He’s Retiring From Rap After Flack Over “Anti-Semitic” Lyrics

(AllHipHop News) Apparently, rapper Lupe Fiasco is done with music.

The rapper announced that he was cancelling all three of his upcoming albums, and giving up the microphone.

Lupe has been involved in a mild controversy, over lyrics contained in his latest song “N.E.R.D.,” which was a freestyle over J. Cole’s song “Everybody Dies.”

Yesterday, (December 12) Lupe was involved in a public spat with DJBooth.com, which called the art the Chicago MC out over what they considered antisemitic lyrics in the song.

According to Lupe, Soundcloud even removed “N.E.R.D.,” claiming the freestyle was taken down because of hate speech.

As a result, Lupe has cancelled the release of his highly anticipated albums Skulls, Drogas, and Drogas Light, which he promised would come out in 2017.

“I get the hint God. Yo Lupe fans it’s been fun and I hope you’ve had fun,” Lupe Fiasco Tweeted today (December 13). “I’m officially not releasing anymore music. Albums cancelled.”

This isn’t the first time Lupe claimed he would step away from the microphone. In January of 2014, Lupe said he was going “back to the shadows” after he defended Iggy Azalea and feuded with Azealia Banks and Kid Cudi.

This time, it seems the Chicago rap star may really make good on his threats, especially after his dust up with Soundcloud, where he has almost 60,000 followers.

As of press time, it’s unclear what Lupe is referring to, since the song is still up on his official page.

“Getting beat up for telling the truth is not how I plan on spending the rest of life. ✌?️”

#DMVOnTheMove: Rico Nasty Introduces The Sweet Savagery Of “Sugar Trap”

(AllHipHop Features) Any reflection on the history of Hip Hop without mentioning the contributions of female voices would be an incomplete effort. Roxanne Shanté, MC Lyte, Lauryn Hill, Nicki Minaj, and many others played a part in making sure the feminine energy was central to rap’s continuation from generation to generation.

The ever-growing DMV Hip Hop movement has its own First Ladies pushing the creative agenda of the Mid-Atlantic region. One of those leading rapstresses on the rise is the spirited rhymer known as Rico Nasty.

Obviously, a person should not simply be characterized as a “female rapper.” The gender of an artist is less important than the art that is created, but Rico is fully aware that being a woman in the music business can come with specific concerns.

“Being a female!” replies Rico when asked what is the hardest part about being an up-and-comer. “People are always trying to get over on you or think they can use you.”

The possible misogynistic motivations of industry insiders have not prevented Ms. Nasty from making a connection with an expanding fan base. She currently has a combined Twitter, Instagram, and Soundcloud following of 38,000 people.

Her digital presence extends to YouTube as well. Rico posted her first video to the website this summer. The clip for “iCarly” collected 250,000 views in its first month and now sits at over half a million views.

“iCarly” was eventually followed by another kid show-inspired cut titled “Hey Arnold.” The formula succeeded again as Rico picked up another 400,000 total plays on YouTube and Soundcloud.

“When people know or think they know what your songs are about they learn the words quicker. [laughs] They feel like they can relate since they’ve seen the shows,” explains Rico.

She then asked buzzing Atlanta entertainer Lil Yachty to contribute to a remix of “Hey Arnold.” The collaboration grabbed the attention of the Hip Hop blogosphere, and Rico even found herself being mentioned on the Yahoo and Billboard sites.

Despite “iCarly” and “Hey Arnold” borrowing from the tween-centered Nickelodeon television roster, the songs actually cover the adult themes of selling drugs, scamming victims, loading hollows, and getting lit. The corresponding visuals for the records are also a mix of youthful vibes with street imagery – water guns and lollipops plus rifles and double cups.

That sweet-savage combination is a representation of the “Sugar Trap” sound Rico brings forth on her 2016 mixtape of the same name. The 8-track project dropped after R.N. introduced herself with 2014’s Summer’s Eve and advancing her personal tale with July’s The Rico Story.

“[Sugar Trap] is not really a concept. It’s just my personality honestly,” says Rico. “I’m not really a serious person and I hate people who are always so ‘serious.’ So I just wanted to make music that says, ‘B-tch, I don’t play. But let’s play.’”

Prior to putting together her own tunes, the rapper born Maria Kelly spent her days discovering various styles of music. Kanye West, Rihanna, The Internet, Washed Out, Toro y Moi, and Grimes are among the diverse acts that got repeat listens.

Rico grew up in Largo, a Maryland locale outside Washington, DC. The city was also the one-time stomping grounds of veteran DMV emcees Wale and Oddisee.

Eventually, the Largo native began exploring the greater DC area, and the exposure helped convert Maria Kelly into Rico Nasty. The recording booth soon became the preferred home of the aspiring artist.

“It started off as poetry, and then when I got older I hung out with people who had access to studio equipment,” Rico states. “Ever since then I’ve been writing music and rapping.”

The woman who also goes by TACOBELLA has teamed up on tracks with fellow DMV reps WillThaRapper, Tino Loud, and HighLife Cato. In addition, Rico has been on show bills with Glenn Dale’s Jay IDK and Baltimore’s Damond Blue.

“I hear a lot of rappers say the DMV doesn’t support. But since I’ve been rapping, I’ve gotten plenty of support,” says Rico. “I think the DMV is just picky. If they don’t like you, then they don’t like you. Gotta come harder.”

While Rico Nasty is working to become the Queen of the DMV, she has an even more important title and urgent responsibility. It is nearly impossible to scroll down the new mother’s Instagram page without seeing her 1-year-old son.

Fatherhood is a key topic on recent albums by male emcees J. Cole, Childish Gambino, and Dave East. Since there are so few high-profile rap matrons, Rico’s IG serves as a rare tribute to Millennial motherhood in Hip Hop. And she embraces the difficult balance of being a parent and a performer.

“It’s hard. But I know it’ll pay off. I know that this stuff comes with a lot of shows and nights away from home. But my family supports me in everything I do, so my son just makes me want to work harder,” proclaims Cameron’s mom.

That drive is the reason so many eyes are on Rico Nasty at the moment. The vision is likely to get even clearer in the coming months.

At the beginning of December, Rico dropped off the new single “Moves,” a three-minute declaration that the queen is ready to take over the chessboard. Another full project is presently in the works with several unnamed spitters tapped to chip in verses.

More music is coming. But in the long run, the Marylander plans to further expand her “Sugar Trap” motive of promoting high spirits and racking up bankrolls.

“I define success as just being happy. If you’re happy, you’ve won in life. A lot of people have no idea what true happiness is. Sh-t is sad,” says Rico. “In 5 years, I don’t know where I’ll be. But I know I’ll be making money. [laughs]”

G.O.O.D. Music COO Steven Victor: Desiigner Is A Rapper’s Rapper

(AllHipHop News) It is hard to deny Desiigner is one of the breakout rap rookies for 2016.

The Brooklynite’s “Panda” spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making the then 18-year-old rhymer the youngest male artist to top the tally since 2007.

While the smash hit has been certified 3x platinum and earned a Best Rap Performance Grammy nomination, one of the criticisms of the record revolves around the difficulty understanding what Desiigner is saying on the song.

He even had to recite the lyrics in a Genius video.

Despite being labeled part of the “Mumble Rap” sub-genre, an executive at Desiigner’s label claims “Panda” is actually an example of the young performer’s lyrical skills.

G.O.O.D. Music COO Steven Victor told Billboard:

I don’t think that “Panda” filled a void — it just cut through. If you listen to the lyrics, he’s a rapper’s rapper. It’s so unique because it’s really difficult for a rapper to fill in bars like that. Usually they just say nonsense and it sounds good. When you’re listening to it, you’re like, “Yo, he’s jumping from subject to subject,” but he’s really not. It just grabs your attention.

Desiigner added:

I get possessed. I know I’m saying words; it’s just like you’re tapped into my world. That’s my job as an artist: to show you and make you understand.

In June, G.O.O.D. Music President Pusha T discussed Desiigner and his chart-topping single.

“His energy has been a spark for all of us, I feel. The ‘Panda’ record is what it is, and there’s so much more to come,” said Pusha.

Why Is Kanye West Meeting With Donald Trump?

(AllHipHop Rumors) This ain’t no rumor. Donald Trump and Kanye West met. Well, 2016 has officially claimed another victim. “We’ve been friends for a long time,” Trump said.

They only met for about 15 minutes. “I just want to take a picture right now,” said Kanye so the nature of the linkage is not yet known. But this does evokes rumors.

Some have stated that Kanye West looked to Trump for “life advice.”

This could be tied to his recent “meltdown,” but we just don’t know right now. I am sure the News section will be on it in a more substantive way.

So does Rick Ross’ theory that Kanye played everybkdy ring more true now?

Kanye West Holds Meeting With President-Elect, Donald Trump

(AllHipHop News) It looks like there was absolutely nothing wrong with Kanye West, when he co-signed Donald Trump during one of his rants, prior to his hospitalization at the end of November.

Kanye drew widespread condemnation after his show at the SAP Center in San Jose, when Kanye revealed that if he would have voted, he “would have voted for Trump.”

Just today, Kanye held an official meeting with Donald Trump at the Trump Towers, after the 39-year-old rap star requested an interview with the new president elect.

Even though Kanye is fresh out of an eight-day stint for “temporary psychosis,” he was able to get a top security clearance to visit Donald Trump. In fact, Donald Trump said Kanye was no threat at all.

Kanye’s appearance with Donald Trump will certainly cause headlines.

Kanye’s friend, rapper Talib Kweli questioned Kanye’s comments supporting Trump back in November, when the Chicago rapper told black people to “stop focusing on racism.”

Their appearance together is interesting, because Kanye West has confirmed that he will run for president in 2020.

Artists like Snoop Dogg, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and even the new Department of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Ben Carson have co-signed Kanye.

The program follows Earn (Glover), Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), and Darius (Keith Stanfield) as the trio attempts to navigate their way through life in the Georgia capital.

Is Lupe Fiasco Going To Take Down J. Cole?

(AllHipHop Rumors) Lupe Fiasco better think! People have had hella jokes about J. Cole, but that dude is moving some serious units. He is one of a few that are selling extreme amounts of records in this climate. That has not stopped rumors that ya man Lupe is going to pop him with a couple lyrical jabs. Now listen to this:

You can pretty much say he is talking about Cole. Now, is Cole going to come back? I hope he doesn’t got all passive aggressive on us. Remember, Lupe is Kanye’s lil’ homie from way back, not to mention Chicago.

Black Lives Matter Founder Says No Negotiating With Trump

(AllHipHop News) It looks like there will be no love lost between Donald Trump and the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement.

In a recent interview with NPR, co-founder Patrisse Cullors said there would be absolutely no negotiating with Donald Trump or anyone in his administration.

“We’re not going to be taking meetings with Donald Trump,” Patrisse Cullors said. “We’re not going to be sitting with his Attorney General. What we will be doing is protesting. What we will be doing is calling for an end to white nationalism and fascism.”

The Black Lives Matter movement has grown into a nation-wide network with more than 40 chapters inside the United States and around the world.

In a statement issued shortly after Donald Trump’s election, the group said they were working on an elaborate strategy to “eradicate both white supremacy and implicit bias towards it.”

“We must reckon with the anti-blackness of America’s history that led to this political moment,” the group told Mic.com in a statement.

The activists are also concerned about Trump’s appointment of Alabama senator Jeff Sessions as the Attorney General of the United States.

Either way, Black Lives Matter is preparing for more protests centering around the injustices happening to African-American men around the United States.
