Dame Dash Talks Bobby Shmurda, L.A. Reid

Former Roc-A-Fella mogul Dame Dash has thrown in his views on why Bobby Shmurda has not gotten more help with his legal plight from the very music industry that toasted to him when he was “hot.”

“I think it’s unfortunate when someone is as young as he is and people make money off of him, that no one explains to him exactly what the business is,” Dame Dash told Dr. Boyce Watkins. “And not understanding that when people are making money off you, once they can’t make money off you anymore, they’re not your friends no more. They’re not looking out for you no more. You understand what I’m saying? I know there was an expectation that L.A. Reid should have bailed him out or at least Epic should have bailed him out. And what I was explaining earlier was, number one, when someone in the music business—An artist is always in debt. They’re always giving you an advance against what you’re gonna sell. So, what I can see—And again, I don’t know exactly what it is. But if you were to ask me and I could give you an educated guess…When you give someone an advance. And then you have to put money into selling the record.”

L.A. Reid recently spoke about how he felt on it all, but eluded that the money simply isn’t there to help Shmurda.

“People don’t know anything about my business, right?” L.A. Reid said during a podcast with Rap Radar. “It’s really not their business. That’s the truth about it, right? We’re not elected officials here. And we’re not at liberty to disclose how we do business. It’s fair practice, I can tell you that. But, it’s not the industry that it once was. We seriously don’t make the money we used to make. That’s a fact of life, right?”

Rapper Cee-Lo Engaged To Longterm Girlfriend

Congrats are in order as Cee-Lo is not engaged to marry his girlfriend Shani James.

The Grammy Award winner made the news to People magazine on the set of his new video, “Work.”

“It was just a typical night at the studio, but then again, not so typical cause I did something extra special, out of the ordinary,” Green, 41, told People. “I went and purchased a ring that we had seen together, maybe four or five months or so prior. I went back and purchased the ring and I just kind of had it stashed away in some old equipment. And I said, ‘Will you reach in there and grab something for me?’”

When Shani went over, the ring was there and the proposal was made.

“It was the most beautiful diamond ring I had ever seen in my life. It was lit up by a light,” Shani said. “I said, ‘What is that?’ He just looked at me and said, ‘Well…?’ And I was just like ‘Oh my goodness.’”

Shrouded in privacy, the pair have actually be engaged about a year, but have decided to keep the news quiet. They have not made a marriage date public.

“Truth be told, it’s not something we wanted to promote ,” Cee-Lo said. “We’re a collective power together because our private life is sacred. But you know what though, maybe it’s time. Maybe it is time for the world to know that I have a very secure situation and a loving woman supporting me the entire way.”

Meek Pops Off At Drake Again

This Meek vs Drake stuff will never end. I reallllllllly wish Meek would respond to Drake lyrically. All this social media and talking just doesn’t do it for me. But, who cares! Meek is a grown man and will do as he pleases. The latest is that Meek popped off at Drake (kinda) at the recent Powerhouse concert in Philly. “My girl tour? Was that a joke.. I got the hottest chick in the game,” Meek said.

Yes. He is correct…why doesn’t it sound right to me though?

Did you see that maybe Drake was being subliminal with Drake in his highly memed video?

James Cruz Shares The Most Rewarding Experiences From Managing Diddy & Gives Key Advice To Aspiring Managers

Video by J. Wright (@WhoisJwright)

REVOLT TV kicked off it’s second annual 2015 REVOLT Music Conference (RMC) in a major way at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. Themed, “The Merging of Music, Technology and Innovation, “ Day 1 of the conference featured a panel titled “Managers: The Start of Big Business.” The panel was moderated by one of the most sought out executives in management and marketing, James Cruz, and featured Kevin Liles, Jay Brown, Ted Chung, Johnny Marines, and Anthony Saleh.

James Cruz has since become one of the most highly respected and influential executives in the entertainment, marketing and branding industries today, and he is currently the President of Bad Boy Management and head of Strategic Partnerships at Combs Enterprises. In addition to managing Sean “Diddy” Combs, Cruz is also the CEO of Cruz Control Marketing. Cruz has played a key role in the careers of Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, and French Montana. He was also instrumental in advancing the careers of 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, LL Cool J as he previously served as the SVP of Marketing and Promotions at Violator Management.

AllHipHop caught up with Cruz to discuss his role managing Diddy, how the game has changed, what makes a good manager and more! When asked what were some of the most rewarding experiences from managing Diddy, Cruz stated,

“We’ve traveled the word, we’ve influenced society, we’ve mentored individuals, we’ve created brands, we’ve owned nightlife. We’ve done everything under the sun and we still have more to do. Probably the best thing is a friendship and trust between Sean and I.

He explained that the game has changed from his time at Violator Management to Bad Boy as artists used to be the face of the brand, but now they own the brand. He says that artists are being smarter and investing their dollars to make more money.

“It’s not just about getting the gold chain and the Rolex. It’s about investing your dollars wisely. The business has changed and grown. You have smarter people in the business. Things are becoming better from a financial and relationship standpoint. Back then it was homeboy management.”

Cruz encourages those getting into the business to learn every single aspect of the business you are in before you become a manager.

“Managers are very diverse in what they do. Be great in one thing but know about everything.”

Cruz attributes his success to knowing himself and asking himself would he buy the product his is promoting. He also stated that he learned from the best, Chris Lighty. He stated that Lighty paved the way for managers such as himself. Cruz also explained that conferences like REVOLT Music Conference are so important, because one can learn more in one day at a conference like that than they learn the entire year. He also expressed that these conferences are where you get to meet the key players in the industry. Check out our interview below!

Breeding Ground Spotlight: Atlanta’s Own DAEtrius Brings P.E.R.C.Y. Park to A3C

After performing on an A3C showcase, most artists network and “politick” by handing out CD’s, exchanging social media handles or handing out merch.  Meet the artist who took to the streets of Edgewood Avenue during Atlanta’s A3C to give everyone a show after he stepped off stage (two showcases to be exact).  His hustle and innovation led to immediate cosigns from Peter Rosenberg, DJ Greg Street and Trinidad James.  World, meet DAEtrius and the #WHEREISPERCYPARK movement.

How do you feel about the Atlanta’s music scene?
Atlanta, is in a good place and sonically we are thriving. However, I feel like with diversity emerging in the Atlanta underground we could use The P.E.R.C.Y. PARK landscape as a contending frontrunner…music that touches the people.  It’s why performing on a stage isn’t enough for me.  Performing on the sound truck at A3C allowed me to get with the people.

What do you want your legacy to leave via music, art, etc…
I want my legacy to be authenticity, a true voice of the people.  My art is for those who are searching for understanding and those that may be misunderstood or misrepresented…people who want to be understood and not interpreted.  I feel like we all have so many layers.  We’re all like fabric…on the surface appearing one way, but when you get up close, it’s we’re so intricate.  It represents both who we are and who we’re becoming.  I want to be a symbol of growth and a testament of understanding.

Explain the acronym/meaning behind P.E.R.C.Y Park.
P.E.R.C.Y. stands for a Portrayal of Emotions in ou(R) Careless Youth.  Park symbolizes the fact that the world is a playground.  We all live in P.E.R.C.Y. Park.

Favorite artist(s) and Why?
Jay Z , Outkast, and Tupac because they all embody the things that help shape my thinking: Charisma, Awareness and Authenticity.

Explain your music in one sentence.
My music is about choices, the place we reside between heaven and hell….both thoughtful and carefree.

Stream “P.E.R.C.Y. Park Anthem” and the A3C x #WHEREISPERCYPARK recap video below and let us know your thoughts on DAEtrius’s  movement.  Follow DAEtrius on Instagram, Twitter and Soundcloud: @daetrius

The affirmative song is a fresh, well-rounded take on relationships that finds David Banner providing encouragement and hope when many look at the chance of finding true love like it’s an urban myth.
