Freeway On Drake – Meek Mill Beef: Rap Is Competitive, It’s Not Over

(AllHipHop News) Yesterday (Feb. 1), Freeway spoke on the Hip-Hop beef between Drake and Meek Mill. While respect and brotherly love were extended  to Meek, the “Rock The Mic” MC also challenged his creativity. “I love Meek and that’s my man…He definitely could’ve went in and did more than what he did. Who knows, it’s not over yet,” this according to VladTV.

“Hip-Hop is competitive. You know, I feel like I’m better than everybody. So, I’m pretty sure that every other artist feels the same way. If you don’t it’s something wrong with you,” offered the lyrically adept wordsmith. When discussing Drake’s  inflammatory diss-track, “Back to Back,” he added, “it made a big impact, but it was light.”

After recalling his own personal beefs that required him to remained “strapped up,” the Philly Freezer mentioned, “I’m happy that it’s staying on wax and it’s not violence  [associated with the Drake and Meek Mill beef].”  As the discussion further delved into  beef and reconciliations, Freeway  would mention the relationship between Jay Z and Beanie Sigel, and Lil Wayne and Baby.

Does Metro Boomin Disagree With Timbaland’s “No More Producers” Comment?

Photo via Metro Boomin’s Instagram
.

Timbaland recently stated that producers don’t exist anymore, and it just seems like people are just beat makers. Metro Boomin seems to have felt some kind of way about it. How he felt we aren’t completely sure. Maybe he is just analyzing the statement. Maybe he disagrees with Timbo, and truly considers himself to be a producer. Nowadays, the beat patterns and drum selections all seem to be the same. It’s like 20 records that sound the same at all times. It seems like no producers go left anymore when others are all going right. Timbaland stated,

“We don’t have producers anymore. We have great programmers. Beats are not made how we used to make them anymore. I think they come as a package now. Beat making has changed. They don’t even know how to make their own snares.”

Timb also said,

“I feel like Metro Boomin will change eventually.”

Well there certainly is a difference in being a beat maker and a producer. Which would you consider Metro Boomin to be? Does Timbaland have a point about there no longer being any producers?

DMX Teaches Panhandler A Valuable Lesson

(AllHipHop News) DMX is well-know to e a man of God as well as a man of the people. A man seeking $5 found this out, but learned a very valuable lesson about exercising the right to be silent. He asked for $5, but they upped it to $20 in the face of the rap star.

DMX said, “God… he gives me the blessings because I pass them on. The Word says, ‘hoard nothing, for it will become stale.’ God can’t fill a full warehouse. God can’t fill a full warehouse.”

The man kept trying to talk and X became more and more frustrated. Finally, they depart without any monetary exchange. Perhaps there was a deeper meaning to their confrontation.

TDE Is Not A Fan Of The New RIAA Certification Rules

The RIAA felt that including music streaming was the next logical step in the continued evolution of Gold & Platinum Awards to reflect the changing marketplace of music consumption. The new Album Award formula is 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams equals 10 track sales which equals 1 album sale. The RIAA’s Digital Single Award ratio has been updated from 100 on-demand streams equals 1 download to 150 on-demand streams equals 1 download. With the new update Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ was one of the albums to be certified platinum. TDE boss Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith a.k.a. Dangeroo Kipawaa wasn’t too excited about the change as he tweeted,

“No cheat codes 2 platinum… #TDE. We don’t stand behind this @RIAA bs. ole skool rules apply. 1 million albums sold is platinum. until we reach that #, save all the congrats.”

What are your thoughts? Should Anthony and TDE just get with the times?

Did Blac Chyna Get Her Future Tattoo Removed?

Photo via Blac Chyna’s Instagram

Well as Blac Chyna keeps her publicity stunts rolling, it appears that she took time to remove her “Future” hand tattoo as she has moved on to “date” Rob Kardashian. During the time that Blac Chyna was featured in Future’s “Rich Sex” video, the two were said to have been dating. Blac Chyna even posted a photo of her Future tattoo on Instagram with the caption,

“Thought it was a drought.”

When Future came out and said he was single, social media clowned Chyna. Chyna seems to be quite the attention wh*re and the Queen of petty. It seems like she got with Rob Kardashian to get back at Kim K & Kylie Jenner. Seeing that everything she does seems to be for publicity, it’s clear why she felt the need to show her getting the tattoo removed. Many believed the tattoo was fake. Blac Chyna even claimed it was done with a sharpie at one point. Carry on.

Are Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, & Amber Rose Swingers Now?

Photo via Kim K & Amber Rose’s Instagram

Are Kanye West & Kim Kardashian, and Amber Rose swingers now? Just maybe, or Amber Rose and Kim K could just be trolling. Remember, Kanye said he and his wife have the type of love to turn exes into best friends. Amber Rose & Kim Kardashian shocked the net by posting the same photo of them together. Kim’s caption read,

“Tea anyone.”

While Amber’s read,

“Swingers.”

Nothing with Ye, Kim, Amber, Kylie, Tyga, Blac Chyna, Rob, Kris, Bruce, and Khloe really surprises anyone anymore. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Plus there is definitely some money all of these crazy folks can get together. Actually money probably is how this photo came about. They probably could get some coins from a new freaky flick too. We wonder if a camera crew was present LOL.

In case you forgot:

Kanye West is married to Kim K.
Amber Rose was with Kanye.
French Montana was with Khloe.
Scott was with Kourtney.
Amber Rose was spotted chilling with Scott and French.
Blac Chyna and Amber Rose are best friends.
Tyga is with Kylie.
Blac Chyna was with Tyga.
Rob Kardashian is now with Blac Chyna.
Kylie & Rob have the same stepchild.

EXCLUSIVE: Chris Cap Talks Connecting With R&B Star Jeremih For “U Got It” Single

Chicago rhymer Chris Cap teamed with fellow Windy City representative Jeremih for the new track “U Got It.” The song has already collected nearly 50,000 plays on SoundCloud in a week.

In an exclusive interview with AllHipHop.com, Cap discusses his collaboration with the R&B star, the current status of Chitown’s music scene, and the full length project to follow 2015’s Fallen Summer EP.

How did you first meet Jeremih?

I’ve been knowing Jeremih for some years now. I met him just really randomly in Chicago and he has been a really cool person. I’ve been blessed to attend [J. Cole’s] Forrest Hill Drive tour and [Jeremih’s] album release show for Late Nights: The Album thanks to him. Being a fan of his music it has been a great year for sure.

What was the creative process for “U Got It”?

That was all the genius of Jeremih. He crafted it, and it was really just a lay up for me to add my verse to it. It is definitely a fun song that the club can get lit to. So I just brought some personal experience to the writing of the verse. I love the song, it’s so dope to me.

Was there a certain muse for the song?

On my end the muse is just a collage of experiences from my life. I just took some experiences from traveling to NY, Miami, and LA, and put it all together in a verse – all the beautiful women I have met and great parties. Jeremih”s hook and verse was so dope it made it easy to bring my experiences to bars.

How is the music scene in Chicago at the moment?

The music scene in Chicago is amazing. There are so many great artists and so much great music being put out right now. I feel like Chicago is how NYC was in the 90’s – everywhere you look it’s stars. We set trends and slang for the world. All eyes are on us right now, and I plan on people hearing my story and experiences. This song is a “hello I am here” for me.

And You Say Chi City
And You Say Chi-City

When are you releasing the follow-up to Fallen Summer?

I have so much music, so I am ready whenever. But life is all about timing so as soon as the timing is right I am going to put out the follow-up. It’s a few artists I want to work with and put on it, and some videos I want to shoot. But it’s all about the timing for me.

Jay Z’s Roc Nation Files Counter Suit Against Rita Ora

(AllHipHop News) Late last year, news broke that British singer Rita Ora was suing Roc Nation in order to get out of her contract with the label. The company, founded by Jay Z, has now filed a counter suit against Ora.

[ALSO READ: Rita Ora Files Lawsuit Against Jay Z’s Roc Nation Over Lack Of Support]

Billboard reports:

In its cross-complaint, filed last Friday (Jan. 29) in California Superior Court, says it has “tirelessly promoted” Ora’s career, spending over $2.3 million promoting and recording her 2012 album Ora. The filing calls for that $2.3 million to be returned, and for damages on the four remaining records in her contract.

According to Ora’s lawyer, Howard E. King, Jay Z called the “R.I.P.” performer after she filed her suit and the Hip Hop mogul said he would released her from the Roc Nation contract. King even referred to Jay as “gracious” and suggested Sony Music has been delaying the process.

“It was just a little twist, because Jay Z, we are told, has to answer to Sony Music, so that’s been the hangup in having this go away,” stated King. “But we’re confident that Jay can resolve whatever he has to with Sony Music.”

Rita Ora released one album under Roc Nation, 2012’s Ora. The LP debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, and it spawned The Notorious B.I.G. sampling, UK hit record “How We Do (Party)”.

Rihanna’s ‘Anti’ Predicted To Sell Around 100,000 Copies In Its First Full Week Of Release

(AllHipHop News) Rihanna’s latest album Anti is looking to open at #27 on the album chart with about 16,000 SPS (Sales Plus Streaming) units, but those numbers do not tell the full story. The 16k total only includes one day of streaming since the album was released on a Thursday and weekly counts begin on Friday. After a full seven days of streaming and digital purchases, Rihanna is closing in on another #1 album.

[ALSO READ: Rihanna’s “Anti” Album Downloaded Over 1 Million Times In 14 Hours]

HitsDailyDouble reports Anti is predicted to move about 95,000-105,000 albums sold and 120,000-130,000 SPS. This will put the Roc Nation songstress ahead of other new arrivals Islah by Kevin Gates (75-80k, 80-85k), This Is Acting by Sia (70-75k, 80-85k) and Nine Track Mind by Charlie Puth (45-50k, 60-65k).

If Rihanna returns to the top spot on the album chart, it will be the second #1 of her career. 2012’s Unapologetic landed in the pole position with 238,000 copies sold in its first week.

Anti has already been certified platinum by the RIAA thanks to Samsung giving away one million free downloads of the album to fans. However, Billboard (which reports chart placement) refused to add the free downloads as part of its album chart calculations.

“I’m highly anticipating this relationship with Kobalt. After doing so much research with our team I think this is the best situation for this project based on its history and enthusiasm to help us face all the challenges in today’s industry,” says Maseo.

De La Soul wanted to make another sample-based album like their classic 1989 LP 3 Feet High and Rising. The group spent several years recording more than 300 hours of live music. And The Anonymous Nobody will encompass everything from Hip Hop, Bossa Nova, Soul, Funk, Disco and Reggae.

Kendrick Lamar & Big Sean Earn Platinum Plaques Under New RIAA Streaming & Track Sale Equivalent Changes

(AllHipHop News) The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has modernized its Gold & Platinum Program to reflect the changing marketplace of music consumption. The RIAA will include on-demand audio and video streams and a track sale equivalent in Gold & Platinum Album Awards. The program’s benchmarks – 500,000 (Gold), 1,000,000 (Platinum) and 2,000,000 plus (multi-Platinum) – will count both sales and streams for single and album certifications.

[ALSO READ: Eminem Becomes First Artist To Earn Two RIAA Digital Diamond Awards]

“For nearly six decades, whether it’s vinyl, CDs, downloads or now streams, the Gold & Platinum Program has adapted to recognize the benchmarks of success in an evolving music marketplace,” said Cary Sherman, Chairman and CEO, RIAA.  “We know that music listening – for both for albums and songs – is skyrocketing, yet that trend has not been reflected in our album certifications.  Modernizing our Album Award to include music streaming is the next logical step in the continued evolution of Gold & Platinum Awards, and doing so enables RIAA to fully reward the success of artists’ albums today.”

The new Album Award formula is 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams equals 10 track sales which equals 1 album sale. The RIAA’s Digital Single Award ratio has been updated from 100 on-demand streams equals 1 download to 150 on-demand streams equals 1 download.

Under the new model several Hip Hop and R&B artists earned gold or platinum plaques. Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly and Big Sean’s Dark Sky Paradise are now certified platinum. Wale’s Ambition is now certified gold. The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness is 2X multi-platinum, and Michael Jackson’s classic album Thriller is 32X multi-platinum.

Billboard began counting streaming and track equivalent sales in its album charts in 2014. Every 1,500 streams equals 1 album sale, and every 10 downloads of individual tracks add up to one album.

Native American Rapper Responds To Macklemore’s “White Privilege 2”

(AllHipHop News) A new song from an Indigenous brother of Hip-Hop is taking Macklemore to task after writing the controversial song “White Privilege 2.”

Gyasi Ross, a Native of America, responds to the song, requesting that his fellow Seattle peer “pass the mic” and let others speak for themselves. He relayed his exact feelings on the song and offered up  “White Privilege III” as a lyrical response to Macklemore’s “well-intentioned piece.”

White Privilege III is obviously a response to Macklemore’s well-intentioned piece, ‘White Privilege II.’ Yet, White Privilege III is much bigger than one song as Macklemore is simply the latest in a very long line of white liberals who chose to play the white savior role and speak for brown-skinned people instead of providing the platform for them to speak for themselves. He’s neither the first nor the greatest, only the latest. We must resist that tendency and push white people who wish to be allies to, instead of attempting to speak for us, passing the mic and leveraging their platforms to let us speak for ourselves. Specifically, if Macklemore indeed wished to limit the universe of parties affected by white privilege and ignore Muslims, Latinos, Natives, Asians, etc. as he did in this song, I suppose that’s his prerogative. Still, if he truly wishes to be an ally he should put marginalized voices to the forefront instead of simply consulting with them and keeping the glory for his white guilt epiphany for himself. The next step in the evolution of the ally is simply to utilize her/his platform and make the introduction, get off the stage and let the stakeholder speak for themselves; for the stakeholder to become the subject and not the object.

Pass the mic.

Black History Month: Richard Roundtree The First Black Action Hero

1973-Richard-Roundtree

What better way is there to start off the month of February, Black History Month, than with a dedication to the first Black action hero Richard Roundtree aka Detective John Shaft? With all the talk about the Oscars and Black actors deserving recognition, let us remember and embrace one of the greatest to do it in Black acting. From working as a cab driver to making it to the big screen as an action star, Richard Roundtree’s path to becoming John Shaft was not easy by any stretch of the imagination.

Roundtree is still alive and still acting to this day playing in many roles since the movie Shaft, but few remain with us like the character of Detective John Shaft, especially in Hip-Hop.

Brandishing a thick horseshoe mustache, kicking villains left and right, this New Rochelle, New York bred actor is often synonymous with Blacksploitation (or Blaxsploitation) films like the Shaft series.

Roundtree’s protrayal of Detective John Shaft is often regarded as one of the most ground breaking roles for Black actors of all time for many reasons. It’s subsequent ripples through the acting world and Black communities alike are still seen to this day.

According to University of Virginia historian John Mason, Roundtree’s role in Shaft the movie almost single-handedly saved MGM from bankruptcy. At the time MGM was struggling to stay afloat and Shaft saved MGM in the box offices. No one had any idea, not the actor nor the directors that Shaft would be such a hit movie.

Says Roundtree, “This was my first feature film, I had done commercials, documentaries but to be cast in a major picture film,  MGM? It was surreal.”

Most importantly, Roundtree introduced a new kind of character to the Black audience. Prior to his role as John Shaft, African-American actors were portrayed or “stereotyped as villains or criminals, as stupid or lazy and were often given roles that could be demeaning” Mason said.

Yea you had the Sidney Poitiers of the Black acting world that were polished and clean, they were held with great honor and adoration, but Richard Roundtree was one of the first real street savvy and cool characters on the big screen. Black audiences could really relate to him because he was smart, he was tough and he was cool all at the same time.

Then you had the soundtrack by Isaac Hayes. There was nothing like it in the streets and Issac Hayes was already legendary for his work on Stax and as a soloist. The combination was perfection and it opened the door for other films like the well known Super Fly which had the Curtis Mayfield scored soundtrack. Where would we be without that one?

While it may be hard for us to imagine now, Roundtree was one of the most stylish guys in Hollywood during the 70’s and had many of your uncles and grandpas trying to take his swag. Lets think about it, how could you play Shaft and NOT be the man? It’s pretty much impossible.

Richard Roundtree is the OG of all OGs in this entertainment game and it’s time we at AllHipHop pay him his respect. Truth be told he deserves more roles than a cameo as being Samuel L’s uncle in the Shaft remake. Take a look at a few clips below, maybe let us know some of your favorite Black actors as we remember the greats of Black History.

Possible Drake and J.Cole Tour In The Works?

Rumors have been swirling around that J.Cole and Drake may be gearing up for a summer tour together! Earlier today, Ebro, of Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning show, suggested that the pair could be hitting the road together.  He didn’t give much detail on the possible blockbuster tour, however he did say an official announcement could be made this later on this week.

Cole has yet to disappoint with all his endeavors in the last few months.  He recently released a live version of 2014 Forest Hills Drive and celebrated the success of his HBO special, which documented his homecoming concert in North Carolina. Cole has been linked with fellow rap superstar Kendrick Lamar, as the duo are rumored to be dropping a collaborative album in the near future.   However, it seems like the fans would enjoy a Drake and Cole partnership just as much.

The pair have already shared the stage on Drake’s Club Paradise Tour in 2012, and Cole even brought Drake out on his homecoming 2014 Forest Hills Drive concert.  By the time this new tour comes, Drake’s highly anticipated View’s From The 6 will already be out.  So it seems like this tour could be a problem, in a good way.  Let’s hope it really goes down.

Listen to the Ebro talk of the possible Drake and Cole tour below.

Rihanna Debuts At No. 27, Despite RIAA Platinum Status

(AllHipHop News) It appears the RIAA and folks at Billboard don’t agree on how to measure Rihanna’s sales.

The singer will debut in the No. 27 slot on the Billboard 200 chart even though the RIAA has already certified ANTI platinum.

Billboard magazine has reported that ANTI moved 15,896 album equivalent units, including four million streams.

Reports say Samsung paid for the platinum-plus copies of the album as a download code made free to Tidal consumers.

ANTI is presently only available on Tidal and iTunes. Physical copies hit retail on Feb. 5.
