Get To Know LaQuan McDonald Beyond His Murder By Chicago Police

LaQuan McDonald more than a news headline. He also was also more than a person that was shot 16 times by a Chicago police officer on Oct. 20, 2014. He’s more than a character in a dashcam video. More than a murder victim. More than a $5 million settlement. Stu Douglas knew LaQuan. On his Facebook account, Stu wrote an impassioned piece on the human being that has raised calls for police reform to maddening levels. Stu explains is relationship with LaQuan as well as who the young man was that has put another scope on police brutality.

So let me tell you about LaQuan.

The reason I want to tell you about him is because he deserves to be remembered for more than a police dash cam video. He had a phenomenal personality, he had an infectious smile and he had so much potential that was mercilessly stolen from him.

I worked directly with LaQuan from my first day at CASA and he was the first child I advocated for. Usually we assign volunteers and we just supervise the case, but for LaQuan, I was his volunteer.

LaQuan had a rough upbringing. He had been taken away from his mum at a young age after suffering from an abusive father and was never really counseled on what had happened to him. He was in and out of juvenile detention for petty crimes but overall his biggest issue was that lacked stability in his life.

There was a period of 4 months where I saw him every couple of days and we sat and played cards whilst we talked about school, talked about his future and most commonly, talked about his family. This lad loved his family so much it was inspiring. He could also make you laugh until you cried, he was so damn funny. Sometimes he didn’t even mean to be. There was one day I went to go see him and he didn’t even want to lift his head off the table when I got there. When I asked him what was up, he responded with “I just want to hide forever.” Worried, I probed him a bit more and found out that while he was in juvenile detention he wrote a letter to his mum and a letter to his girlfriend. The letter to his mum was from an adoring son who wanted the two of them to be reunited and to work on making them stronger. The letter to his girlfriend was from a 17yo boy who had been locked up for the last couple of months without any physical interaction – you could imagine what that could entail. Well, he sent the letters to the wrong intended person. After losing my s### laughing at the thought of their reaction I asked him how p##### off his mum was. He looked at me and said “nah, I’m not even worried about her, I’m worried about my girlfriend. Now she’s so doped up on love she’s never gonna leave me alone.” I still laugh about this with his mum who is still shocked “he even knows what some of those words mean”.

We worked with LaQuan to give him the best possible go at making something for himself. He managed to hold down a job over summer, he managed to pass his intensive probation for the first time and he was attending school every single day. Not only that, he was actually succeeding at school. It was during this time that I realised the true ability and resilience of LaQuan. Always bubbly, always smiling, always asking questions. He was inquisitive about where I was from and told me that he’d love to go out to Australia one day and go surfing. Considering his biggest fear was drowning, I thought this was a little odd, but I never wanted to subdue his dreams. The last I spoke to LaQuan was about a week before he passed away. He actually called me to ask about a job program we were running and how he wanted to apply for it. He even asked me how my weekend was, which still remains to this day one of my favourite moments with him. It just epitomized who he was. Hard working, caring and thoughtful.

And then on October 20, 2014, he was shot and killed by a CPD officer. The day after he was killed, I received a call first thing in the morning from his probation officer. She was in tears as she tried to inform me what had happened the night before. The information we were given at the time was that he lunged at a police officer with a knife and he was shot once in the chest and that killed him. Something was wrong though. LaQuan never antagonised. He never sought the fight and would only get in scraps when he was standing his ground for what he thought he was right. This was the first time I thought something wasn’t right, but I put that down to emotional biases that my friend was not the kind of person who would attack a police officer.

I attended LaQuans wake and his funeral with his probation officers, his lawyer, his caseworker, his teachers, his therapist and his judge. All of us were in tears. That shows you how many professionals would take time out of their day to pay their respects to a child robbed of his potential and how moved we all were by his death.

Then there came the moment where I knew for certain something wasn’t right. At his wake there was an open casket and while his probation officer and I were paying respects, I noticed a bullet hole in his hand. How could he have this injury if he was shot in the chest like the police report had said? It just wasn’t adding up.

Now I don’t know why he was carrying a knife, I don’t even know if he was carrying a knife at all anymore. All the information we were fed from the police has been thrown into doubt. All I know was that he had an emotional day and as a result was out late and far from home. How he got there? We still don’t know. We may never know.

Watching the video released by the CPD tonight made me sick. I’ve witnessed my friend being shot down and killed in cold blood. I’ve been trying to find a silver lining in the fact the cop has been charged with murder, but it’s been 400 days and it is evidently clear that the city believes his life was not worth the transparency a city like Chicago deserves.

But I don’t want his legacy to be about that video. I don’t want his legacy to be about his death. I want his legacy to be about the kind of young man that he was. Right now, on the streets of Chicago, people are protesting for change. And they are protesting peacefully. I was there protesting with them and there really was a positive vibe. I actually bumped into his cousin who I met at LaQuan’s funeral and we marched together for a while talking about what needs to change. People may argue that it was about race, and it may very well be. But to me, this is about a man, killing a boy, and the city trying to cover it up.

Now I don’t pray. But I’m hoping to whatever there is out there that the protests remain calm and they remain peaceful. Why? Because being antagonistic and picking a fight won’t get the agenda moving forward. Standing up for what is right will though.

But more importantly I can tell you first hand that it’s what his family wants and it’s what LaQuan would have done.

Wu-Tang Clan’s Secret “Once Upon A Time In Shaolin” Album Has Been Purchased

(AllHipHop News) The secret, one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album Once Upon A Time In Shaolin has an owner. According to reports, a private collector purchased the project for a bid “in the millions.”

[ALSO READ: RZA Says Wu-Tang Clan Offered $5 Million For One Copy Of New Album]

Wu fans still will not be able to listen to Once Upon A Time In Shaolin. The owner cannot commercially release the music for almost 9 decades.

“After 88 years the copyright, which includes public and commercial rights, automatically transfers to the owner of the work,” said producer Cilvaringz. “However, it will still be his or her choice at that [point] to release it or not release it.”

At one point, some members of the Wu were at odds over the idea most of the world will not be able to hear the collection in their lifetimes. Others understood the concept RZA was trying to achieve by turning Shaolin into an art piece.

“I think the only way to establish value in something is for it to be exclusive. That’s the whole point that I gathered for that particular piece of art. Music is also art, but it’s been devalued because of how it’s looked at now in the industry,” Masta Killa told AllHipHop.com. “So the only way to establish that value is to be exclusive with something. If I’m not going to be exclusive with it, then what’s going to make this piece of art any different than any other album that you can go buy?”

In preparation for the upcoming project, YG was the subject of a cover story for The Fader. In the article, the Def Jam recording artist talked about the response he has received in his own hometown since finding success in the music business.

“It’s a gang of motherf*ckers out here on some ‘F*ck YG’ sh*t,” said the “Twist My Fingaz” performer.

Back in June, YG was shot in a Los Angeles studio, but he refused to cooperate with police. The 25-year-old entertainer has since increased his security. YG insists some people in his city are not happy with what he has accomplished.

“Los Angeles County is sick right now. It’s bad. Everybody mad out here right now. All the young motherf*ckers, they getting money, they motivated,” YG stated. “The music sh*t start popping again out here. We got strip clubs now. It’s a lot of motherf*ckers doing music now. It’s a lot of females becoming models and sh*t now. We got something to do with that. But at the same time, it’s a lot of motherf*ckers that’s mad.”

Pleasure P Calls Out Other R&B Artists For Not Supporting The Genre (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) There have been many discussions about the state of R&B music in the modern era. Some people believe the genre is on its deathbed while others feel Rhythm & Blues is still thriving. Marcus “Pleasure P” Cooper spoke with DJ Smallz Eyes about some of his contemporaries in R&B.

“Some of these n*ggas is fake as f*ck,” said Pleasure P about his peers. “The idea was to do an R&B group. You got Ginuwine, Tank, and Tyrese. All of those guys from that era, they did it. You got LSG, the best from that era. They did it. My era – these n*ggas is so flaw.”

He continued, “I don’t even care if they did a group without me. I just think it would be something dope for our generation. But these n*ggas so fake.”

The former member of Pretty Ricky then questioned how many artists are making R&B music at the moment. He rattled off the names Chris Brown, August Alsina, Omarion, Mario, Bobby V, Trey Songz, Ne-Yo, The-Dream, and himself.

“Nine different artists. How many tours have you seen with all these artists on one tour? None. How many songs have you seen with anybody on a song with each other? None,” added P. “How can anybody respect the genre. They say R&B’s dead. No, you n*ggas dead, because y’all don’t want to work together to get the genre back popping.”

I think if we’re not careful, we let people instigate us into some kind of weird situations. It’s the people around us that are repeating it and retweeting… I didn’t know she was going to read [the tweet]… I was just saying some sh*t. Now I got some hardcore ass b*tch after me.

On appreciation for Drake:

He’s an awesome human being. I met Drake under some really cool circumstances… This was six years ago. To surprise [my son] Seven, I asked Drake – I didn’t know him –  if he would come to Seven’s school. And he did… I really respect Drake for keeping that relationship with Seven… We love Drake, and Drake adores Jay Electronica.

On Jay Electronica’s next album:

Jay don’t need to make an album… He can make one if he wants to, but he don’t need to do that. He’s an amazing emcee. Jay is a person that comes into people’s lives and brings out the best in them… His Eternal Sunshine can last us until 2029. I still haven’t heard anything as good as that.

Will Smith Says Racism Is Rare, Discusses How Actors Can Improve Race Relations

(AllHipHop news) As protests to bring awareness to police brutality against African Americans continue around the country and many people call for reforms to the criminal justice system for unfairly targeting people of color, race has been a major topic in the national media for years. Despite those reports, actor/rapper Will Smith told The Hollywood Reporter racism is not a major problem.

[ALSO READ: Will Smith Discusses Race Relations In America + Jaden & Willow Dealing With Criticism]

Smith said:

Everybody is prejudiced. Everybody has their life experiences that make them prefer one thing over another — it makes them prefer blond hair over a brunette; if you see somebody with dark skin walking down the street, you have a different reaction than you have [with] someone who is 5-foot-1 and white. But there is a connotation with racism of superiority: You feel that your race generally is superior. And I have to say, I live with constant prejudice, but racism is actually rare — someone who thinks their race is superior.

The conversation then shifted to the 47-year-old star of Concussion discussing how actors could help stop discrimination against other races. Smith added:

As actors we have the ultimate power. Historically, story combined with imagery moves humanity forward. What we do — not that it’s a responsibility, but it is the ultimate forum for changing people’s hearts and minds. So when I’m choosing a movie, I understand the global power of being able to send imagery around the world. A large part of the way that America is viewed globally is from the historical imagery that we have sent around the world through cinema. Any time I put something in the world, I am always connecting to an idea.

Master P Aims To Connects Fans & Celebrities With “Streemz”

The explosion of Social Media has undoubtedly changed the world of entertainment, opening a larger window for fans to peek into the lives of some of their favorite celebrities. From reality TV to mega platforms like Twitter, for better or worse, it’s never been easier to interact with one another.

Now mogul and legendary No Limit founder Master P has entered the Social Media game, officially launching Streemz, a new rebel technology company.

With most ad revenue generated by clicks and the amount of eyes that ultimately hit a website, despite being a driving force in bringing fans to various blogs and platforms, celebrities aren’t given a cut of the billions that these sites are making.

Master P intends to change that, offering celebrities a new technology that aggregates all their social content into one channel; giving them a fair share of the ad revenues already being enjoyed by major sites. It’s an innovative concept from the businessman and technology guru also known as Percy Miller, as the new celebrity channel allows fans to stay connected 24/7.

It’s a win for advertisers too, who will be able to speak to a specific celebrity, and their fan base, in order to create exciting online campaigns in real time.

“If you’re starting a revolution, it’s best to start at the cash register. My focus is growing the pie so that everyone benefits. There are several thousand celebrities worldwide that all deserve their fair share. I created Streemz to spread the wealth,” explains Master P.

Streemz is a new technology platform that broadcasts any media or content to all its users in near real time format.  It’s not a website technology. It’s a channel of possibilities, especially, with the marketing expertise of Annette McFarland, and Mike Felder at the helm of Streemz Sports.

Backed by a solid team of social media technology experts, the man responsible for selling over 75 million records independently is looking to shakeup the industry again by giving his peers a blueprint for digital success. He’s already lined up several top celebrities, musicians, actors and athletes to launch what in the next 60 days. He believes it’s a revolution whose time has come.
