Temperature’s Rising: Nick de la Hoyde- By My Side

“Music is the only drug for the mad addicts,” Nick de la Hoyde spits in his new single, “By My Side.” As a self-diagnosed music addict myself, I am always on the prowl for new music, even when the rest of the world is freaking out over some viral sensation, like Bruce Jenner’s transformation to Caitlyn for instance. Even though A$AP Rocky’s A.L.L.A., Wale’s The Album About Nothing, and Big Sean’s Dark Sky Paradise are currently rotating heavily in my Spotify playlist, Nick de la Hoyde’s new single, “By My Side,” officially released today, has provided the spark to my morning soundtrack.

The typical Hip-Hop Love song is atrocious. An artist spits some rhymes about how, in spite of their many side-chicks, their main chick is the special one. Add Chris Brown or Trey Songz, and you have a 50% chance of making it to the radio. Mainstream Hip-Hop has become like a formulated science, unfortunately. However, on “By My Side,” Nick uses honest lyrics to convey why the object of his love interest is someone he wants to stay as a permanent force in his life. The woman in question is not only his beau, but the muse to his music as well. But speaking of the music, let’s speak a little to the man’s desire to pursue it in the first place.

Nick de la Hoyde is a 20-year-old singer/songwriter/rapper from Sydney, Australia. While Nick’s Australian accent is a huge departure from the mostly American bred rappers that dominate radio in the states, by melding the sounds and vibes of hip-hop, pop, soul, R&B, and spoken word, Nick has developed a style that defies cutesy genre-labeling. With introspective lyrics that read like personal journal entries, his songs express the angst and triumphs that come with youth, dreams, and determination. But music wasn’t always in the cards for Nick. In pursuit of a professional football career, Nick moved to Barcelona, Spain at the age of 15 and lived there for 4 years. It was during this time that Nick started to explore hip-hop music as a way of expressing his frustrations with the ups and downs of following his dreams. What started out as an outlet, soon became a burning passion. Nick wrote lyrics and melodies to his favorite instrumentals as well as original songs, in collaboration with Sydney based composer, musician and producer (and brother) Joseph de la Hoyde (de la Aurora & Monks of Mellonwah).

Nick started off writing his own introspective lyrics and recording them over modern hits, sharing his work on Youtube and Instagram (where he’s built an audience of over 100,000 at @ndelahoyde). Nick’s work recently caught the attention of Chicago based Hip-Hop producer Lemoyne ‘LA’ Alexander (R.Kelly, Aaliyah) who invited Nick to the USA to collaborate. The result, Nick’s debut single “The Longest Way,” realeased in October, entered the US top 100 chart strongly in 2015.

Nick is currently preparing for the of his debut EP Passion, but in the meantime you can check out his latest single on SoundCloud.

As always, make sure to track Nick Delahoyde’s movements on the interwebs:

There is no official word on what role Drake and Pharrell will serve during their respective partnerships with Apple. The New York Post previously reported Drake was in negotiations to make around $19 million to serve as a guest DJ for the revamped iTunes Radio, but a source tells Billboard that number is not likely to be accurate.

“Apple doesn’t normally pay artists for those types of collaborations,” said Billboard‘s source.

The 2015 Worldwide Developers Conference is being held June 8-12 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. The annual event is normally highlighted by Apple introducing new products such as updated versions of iOS and the latest iPhone.

“The App Store ignited an app ecosystem that is simply amazing, forever changing the lives of customers and creating millions of jobs worldwide,” states Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We’ve got incredible new technologies for iOS and OS X to share with developers at WWDC and around the world, and can’t wait to see the next generation of apps they create.”

A.L.L.A. features Mos on the the closing cut “Back Home.” A$AP Rocky spoke with DJ Whoo Kid about collaborating with the Brooklyn legend.

“He was Mos Def when he was rapping. He wasn’t Yasiin Bey,” said Rocky. “Mos is an artist. Mos will start rapping for no reason.”

The A$AP Mob member also talked about his experiences doing drugs with Wiz Khalifa. Wiz claimed Rocky ran away from a “blunt challenge” which led Rocky to address his rap peer’s accusations.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with Wiz, and I don’t know what’s wrong with Snoop [Dogg]. I don’t know what’s wrong with Chris Brown and all these n*ggas. These n*ggas been on the West Coast too long and these n##### want to smoke too much,” Rocky stated.

According to Rocky, he told the Taylor Gang leader he would go blunt for blunt, but Wiz responded that he does not smoke blunts, only papers. While Rocky admitted he had trouble handling Wiz’s dab, the “L$D” rapper got Wiz back when he got him to do mushrooms for the first time.

“Since he put me on blast for being a punk cause I couldn’t take the dab – even though that was three years ago – that’s cool. Now I gotta put him on blast,” added Rocky. “I give him the shrooms. We go to the after-party. Your man is leaning. He’s like, ‘Oh sh*t, I see it now man. I feel it. You see the light right there, it’s f*cking bending.'”

Black Lives Matter or Black Life Matters?

Black Lives Matter, But More Importantly…

Recently, the chant of black people in response to the unwarranted, unjustified and downright unacceptable deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of unlawful officers have become “Black Lives Matter.” We’ve seen the handwritten signage adorned by hands of different colors all across this country and abroad. We’ve heard the chant turn into a roar and the roar into a rant. It’s a proclamation of sorts, “Black Lives Matter.” Which they do. But I challenge us to make a change to that statement which would ultimately change who we are and who people perceive us to be.

Black lives matter, but more importantly, black “life” matters. Now before you nonchalantly attempt to dismiss my suggestive statement as if it means the same thing or that it’s so miniscule of a change that it doesn’t mean anything different at all, consider what I’m saying. Black “Life” Matters. Repeat it again, Black “Life” Matters. And yet again, Black “Life” Matters.

Black lives matter is completely different from black life matters and it provokes a different sense of responsibility. Maybe it’s just me, but when I hear “black lives matter” it sounds as if we’re trying to convince others that we should matter to them. And if we mattered to them, they’d be more thoughtful, considerate and conscious of their approach, dealings and interactions with us. They’d see us in a different perspective, a different light. “Black Lives Matter” sounds like a demonstrative response to actions by others who have denigrated the lives of black people, most of whom we don’t even know personally. The onus is purposely and intentionally shifted to someone other than who the focus should be on. “Black Lives Matter” encompasses a lot, but nothing at the same time, because it’s a broad statement with no specificity or clear inclination on exactly whose life matters. Are we only referring to the lives that’s been lost at the hands of rogue police officers? Are we talking about the lives cut short by the hands of other black people? Are we also talking about the children we abort?

If “Black Life Matters” then that would incorporate all black people, our culture, our past, present and future, our ancestors, the preservation of our history, our neighborhoods, our communities, our schools, our children, our elders, our incarcerated brothers and sisters, our people victimized by societal ills, the sick, the forgotten, “unborn” embryos, all black life, starting with one, your very own. That would allow us to address our critical issues from an individualistic, but ultimately, cohesive perspective.

You see, as my Pastor PM Smith always says, “you change the world one mind, one heart, one life, one home, one community and one nation at a time.” It’s way more deep than just the plurality and singular usage of the word when it comes to Black “Lives” Matter versus Black “Life” Matters. It’s much deeper than just a slogan or a soundbite or even a trademark that one can screen-print onto tee shirts and make a profit from selling to the people who are supposed to matter. Black “Life” Matters is an affirmation that requires you to act as if you believe it to be true. Black “Life” Matters is a personal statement and testament. And once we start to believe and exhibit truly that Black “Life” Matters we will no longer have to spend countless hours trying to convince others that our lives are valuable. #blacklifematters
