[PICS] DMC, Hip-Hop And Comics At Comic Con 2014

Comics and Hip-Hop collided once again this year!

Darryl “DMC” McDaniels is a Rock-N-Roll Hall of Famer for his musical contributions as a member of Run DMC. However, over the weekend DMC returned to his true roots as an OG (Original Geek) at the New York Comic Con 2014. As an artist in Run DMC, he was also considered one of the super heroes of rap in the 80’s and 90’s. Over the weekend, he launched his comic, “DMC,” under his own comic publishing label, Darryl Makes Comics. An all star cast joined DMC to talk comics and Hip-Hop at the second annual “Boom! Bap! Pow! Hip-Hop & Comics! 2014” panel. Senior Editor of Darryl Makes Comics Riggs Morales, Young Guru, rapper/geek Kwame, Q-Unique of the Arsonists/Rock Steady Crew, Editor-in-Chief Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez and moderator AllHipHop’s own Chuck Creekmur. The spirited conversation transversed diversity in comics, the artists background in comics and even DMC’s own book. Below are some images from the panel, courtesy of Erika Quiles.

Ferguson Police Prepare For Surprise Protests

After the deaths of two  18-year-old  St. Louis men, Michael Brown and Vonderrit Myers,Jr., tensions continue to rise in St. Louis.Protest organizers plan to protest throughout Ferguson and St. Louis at undisclosed locations for a day of civil disobedience called “Moral Monday” (Oct.13) and the police are not happy about it.

Protesters met on Sunday (Oct.12) to discuss and practice strategies and tactics for their protests so they could be prepared for whatever  methods the police use to interfere with their demonstration. St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Sam Dotson said that the police do not like the unknown and plan to do their best to keep the community safe.

“Anything that would impact the average person’s daily life concerns me,” Dotson said.  “Can I keep the public safe? Can I keep the officers safe? Can I keep some sense of normalcy in our community?”

“Moral Monday” wraps up #FergusonOctober, a four-day-weekend of rallies, meetings and marches about social activism. Since the anticipated conduct of the protesters is unknown, Dotson is taking extra precaution to prepare for whatever unruliness they may bring. Extra police officers will be at St. Louis’ football and baseball stadiums to prevent any protests from happening. Officers will also be using handheld cameras to record any events that take place in case of later discord.

Celeste Faison told USA Today that she and the organizers wanted to “make sure we have people trained to stop business as usual.”

“We are saying that until we have justice for Mike Brown, until we have systemic change and the elimination of oppressive systems, we are going to stop business as usual. Folks will no longer be comfortable and maintaining the status quo,” said Faison, who has been training protesters.

As a part of the training, protesters have been told to write a phone number for bail and legal help on their upper arms and to go limp or turn on their sides if officers beat them,

Saigon Talks About New Label Squid Ink Squad and More.

“I had million, million dollar offers. I took a little less money for a better situation.”
From Bully To Boss: Saigon breaks down his path from recording for a major to running his own record label. Plenty of artists claim to have seen it all. But few can back it up the way Saigon can.

From a major label deal with Just Blaze to a reoccurring role on Entourage to a starring role on Love and Hip-Hop, the Yardfather has pretty much been there and done that.

But with a business plan in hand and new album on deck, Saigon can now add label owner on his resume with the creation of Squid Ink Squad records which is also releasing his new album G.S.N.T. 3: The Troubled Times Of Brian Carenard.

AHH caught up with the new CEO to talk contracts, copycats, giving back and more.

Dallas Nurse Tests Positive For Ebola Virus

After having extensive contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient to die in the United States, a Dallas health care worker has tested positive for the Ebola virus, CNN reports.  On Sunday, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a preliminary test on her  blood sample and confirmed that the nurse had contracted the infection. This is the first transmission of the virus in the United States and the second diagnosis in the country.

While treating Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital the nurse wore the required protective gear, including a mask, gown, gloves and a shield, but still contracted Ebola reportedly due to a breach in protocol.

The director of the CDC Tom Frieden said at a news conference on Sunday that ” there was a breach in protocol, and that breach in protocol resulted in this infection.”

The nurse is currently in stable condition. Her car and apartment will be cleaned by Hazardous materials units.

Neuroscientist & Psychiatrist Are Promoting Using Hip Hop To Treat Mental Illness

(AllHipHop News) For all the negative societal issues that often get fairly or unfairly associated with rap music, neuroscientist Dr. Becky Inkster at England’s University of Cambridge and psychiatrist Dr. Akeem Sule, a Wolfson College associate, have started the social venture Hip Hop Psych to help treat mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and depression.

“There is so much more to Hip Hop than the public realizes,” Inkster told The Guardian. “It is rich in references to psychiatric illnesses that have not been properly explored and which could be of enormous benefit to patients.”

Inkster and Sule view patients being able to use Hip Hop as part of their therapy by writing and rapping lyrics. They could possibly see medical students learning about mental health issues through the art form as well.

According to Inkster, rappers have already been using their craft as a form of healing. She believes some Hip Hop performers have a tendency to suffer from depression and other mental health problems because of their upbringing.

“Many key rappers and Hip Hop artists come from deprived urban areas which are often hotbeds for problems such as drug abuse, domestic violence and poverty, which are in turn linked to increased occurrences of psychiatric illnesses,” added Inkster.

Veteran emcee Pharoahe Monch actually tackled the issue of mental illness on his latest album PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Earlier this year, Monch discussed his own battle with depression with AllHipHop.com.

“‘Losing My Mind’ and the title track are actual accounts of me dealing with a bout of depression where I had been hospitalized with asthma. The attack at the time was real severe, so the amount of medication I was receiving was pretty harsh,” explained Monch. “After leaving the hospital, I went from taking the medication intravenously to pills, and I was just bombarded with not being able to sleep and overall not being able to process anything. I just remember being like ‘what the f**k is happening to me?’”

Hip Hop Psych will be covering artists like 2Pac, Kendrick Lamar, and J Cole at the upcoming Cambridge Festival of Ideas event on October 20.

Bone Crusher Says Modern Rap Is Leading To A “Race Of Retardation”

(AllHipHop News) Does today’s rap music stand up to the creative output of Hip Hop of the past? That’s a question that has become a standard part of the discussion about the culture for years. Veteran Atlanta rapper Bone Crusher sat down with VladTV to talk about the current state of Hip Hop.

[ALSO READ: EXCLUSIVE: MC Wars Say Keith Murray/Fredro Starr & Bonecrusher/Mike Jones Battles Still In The Works]

“We’re not being more creative. We’re now dumbing down. Once you start dumbing down something that needs to be creative, you start to lose,” stated Crusher. “People are starting to not even rap no more. They’re starting to mumble on songs… Now you’re getting a race of retardation.”

The conversation began with the “Never Scared” rapper being asked about white artists in Hip Hop. Grammy winner Macklemore’s name was brought up, and BC later responded to the Seattle-based rhymer’s success.

“You better get mad that Macklemore is winning, because Macklemore did exactly what he was supposed to do,” said Bone Crusher. “He just came in with a creative product that sounds good and he’s winning. You can’t get mad at him for that. You only get mad cause you didn’t do it.”
