Kanye West: My Dad Used To Be A Member Of The Paparazzi

(AllHipHop News) Kanye West has been attached to the paparazzi since birth. During the deposition of the lawsuit between paparazzi photographer Daniel Ramos and Kanye West, West reveals his father’s past photography history.

Back in March, Kanye West pleaded no contest to a civil lawsuit from paparazzi photographer Daniel Ramos, whom he had a physical altercation with outside of LAX airport in July 2013. During the deposition stage of the civil lawsuit, West revealed to Ramos’ lawyer Nate Goldberg that his father was also a paparazzo:

‘My father was a paparazzo himself. My father was a medical illustrator, a Black Panther, a Christian marriage counselor,

Perhaps more shocking than that admission is West explaining how paparazzi members have helped him against the law. According to West, paparazzi photographers have kept him from breaking the law on numerous occasions:

The paparazzi watch my car and makes sure that cops don’t give me tickets. There are some nice guys out here trying to just feed their family.

While West pleaded no contest, he does maintain that he did not assault the photographer. West explains he “tried to stop his camera and stuff, he fell down, faked it and everyone was saying “Why did you hit this guy?” I didn’t hit him.”

West was sentenced to two years of probation, 24 anger management therapy sessions and 250 hours of community service following his no contest plea.

(AllHipHop News) At this point, TV networks are missing out on a 50 Cent comedy TV show. Earlier today (August 27th) 50 Cent continued his social media war with his “brother” Floyd Mayweather Jr by writing a highly misspelled love letter to Tameka “Tiny” Harris from Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The feud between Mayweather Jr and 50 Cent seemed to die down after the G-Unit general admitted during an interview with Angie Martinez that Mayweather Jr could read and he does not want to hurt him. Hours later, 50 Cent released a picture on his personal Instagram of a misspelled love letter to T.I.’s wife:

The caption of the Instagram photograph stated that Mayweather Jr has been neglecting his family members and specificially names his sisters Fannie Orr and Deltricia Tawanna Howard. Later in the caption, 50 Cent issues a fighting challenge to Mayweather Jr by writing “If you want to fight I’ll be in Vegas next”:

@floydmayweather I love you like a brother. Call fanny, and tawana your sister’s love your crazy ass.check on Devon you are forgetting the people who matter boy. If you want to fight I’ll be in Vegas nextweek.#SMSaudio

Lil Fame (Of M.O.P.): I Saw My Friend Get Mouth-To-Mouth Resuscitation From A Crackhead (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Just because you may be addicted to crack cocaine does not mean you can not save a life. Last Friday (August 22nd), Lil Fame discussed how his friend’s life was saved by an altruistic crackhead.

While appearing on Cipha Sounds’ Take It Personal, M.O.P retold stories from their personal past as improv comedians from Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) interpreted those stories in comedic sketches. According to Fame’s retelling, his friend’s motorcycle accident had a hilarious emergency medical attendant:

I’m waiting all day for him. He going to let me ride. So all day (motorcycle speeding sound), I’m like ‘Yo!’ Flying past me and sh*t. Somebody come around the corner like ‘your man just got an accident.’ I’m like ‘Damn’. We run around the corner and sh*t. The n*gga sprawled out…and a crackhead over him giving him mouth-to-mouth.

Fame later attests that his friend was fine and out of the hospital in less than 24 hours.

Check out Lil Fame’s story and the comedic sketches following from Take It Personal below:

Suge Knight Not Cooperating With Police, His Family Comments On His Health

(AllHipHop News) Snitches have throughout history received stitches and Suge Knight has no intentions on getting any more following his shooting in West L.A. According to reports, Suge Knight has not helped the police catch the individual who shot him at Chris Brown’s pre-VMA party.

Suge Knight was transported to Cedars Sinai after sustaining six bullet wounds from a shooting at nightclub 1Oak on this past Sunday (August 24th). However, reports have surfaced that when police have questioned Knight over the shooting he has replied with “I was shot?”

While Knight might not be directly using the Los Angeles Police Department’s help, his room in the intensive care unit is under heavy police supervision according to RadarOnline. According to a source with RadarOnline, Knight’s gang affiliations are reason for the intensified police protection:

It’s no secret that Suge has very strong ties to the Blood gang … It’s a very tense environment and staff members want Suge out of their hospital as soon as possible because of the danger he places them in just by being a patient.

The same day of the shooting (August 24th), Suge Knight’s family released a statement on Suge Knight’s Facebook fanpage. In the statement, the family reasoned that while Knight has a nefarious reputation, he has “done a lot of things for the community”:

Suge is currently resting and has lost a lot of blood, he’s human. He’s done a lot of things for the community and the culture as a whole so we ask that you respect that.

ESPN's Bomani Jones Writes Editorial About The "Whitewashing" Of Hip Hop

(AllHipHop News) Bomani Jones is the co-host of ESPN2’s Highly Questionable, a regular on ESPN’s Around The Horn, and an unabashed fan of rap music. The latter description clearly came into play when the veteran sports writer decided to pen an editorial for Playboy titled “The Tragedy Of Whitewashing Hip Hop.”

The concept of the article appears to have been sparked by MTV’s Video Music Awards show this past weekend. Jones opens the piece discussing the respective VMA performances of female rappers Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea.

[ALSO READ: Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Usher & Iggy Azalea Hit The Stage At 2014 VMAs (VIDEO)]

Jones questions why some award shows have been reluctant to give performing duties to Black rappers without having a white counterpart on stage with them.

For example, Nicki was allowed to open the VMAs, but she was included in a medley with pop singers Jesse J and Ariana Grande. Iggy was tapped to perform her own hit single “Black Widow” featuring Rita Ora.

Jones also points out that the Black rappers slated to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards (save Jay Z hitting the stage with wife Beyoncé) were “backed” by a white artist – Juicy J/Katy Perry, Kendrick Lamar/Imagine Dragons. In contrast, Macklemore had his own set.

The Clark Atlanta University graduate tackles the often discussed issue of the appropriation of an originally Black art form like Hip Hop, Rock, and Jazz into mainstream culture. Jones writes in part:

There are few dignified things that America has demonstrated it would rather see a white person do than a black one, if any white person anywhere would be up to the task.

The tragedy stands out, though. Rap, so often decried by so many critics, now only seems as legitimate in the mainstream with white faces in front. For all our talk of how hip hop bridged cultural gaps and helped foster racial reconciliation, it has now begun to look like art from eras we swore we’d moved beyond. What was so new and fresh and had so much potential now looks like everything else, and in the worst ways.

As music critic Stereo Williams has noted, rock never had black, worldwide stars before it became a sensation. There were great artists, but the world wasn’t on a first-name basis with any of them. There was no Run DMC or Public Enemy who introduced the world to the form. Their work was so easily co-opted—and, in some cases, stolen—because they were largely anonymous. Muddy Waters was no legend to most until Mick Jagger said so.

But we’ve had lots of black superstars in rap. We’ve lived long enough to see Jay-Z on the cover of Time, and colleges near and far where professors have found the work of Tupac Shakur to be worthy of academic inquiry. They did not have to wait for the reverence white artists who were influenced by them to give them historical relevance.

Jones is not the only well-known individual to speak out about white artists embracing and incorporating Hip Hop imagery and content into their brand. Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt recently bashed Taylor Swift’s new video for “Shake It Off” for what he saw as perpetuating Black stereotypes.

Brand Nubian member Lord Jamar has been extremely vocal over the last few years about the subject as well. During one interview he referred to white artists as “guests” in Hip Hop.

There have also been people in the Hip Hop community that have defended white performers like Iggy and Macklemore against the criticism they are essentially just profiting off of Black culture.

“You know, we as black people have to come to grips that Hip Hop is a contagious culture. If you love something, you gotta set it free,” said The Roots drummer Questlove. “I’mma let Iggy be Iggy.”

Brooklyn emcee Talib Kweli stated that he felt Macklemore paid his dues, but acknowledged that “being white helps.” Buckshot of Duck Down Records has even challenged the notion that Hip Hop was originally a Black art form.

“How? How when we had Ad-Rock, a part of the Beastie Boys, in the movie Krush Groove, a part of the beginning of Hip Hop, who introduced LL Cool J to Russell Simmons?” asked Buckshot. “How was it originally a Black thing? Stop it.”

This conversation has been covered extensively in recent months by various outlets. Marc Lamont Hill moderated a 26-minute discussion for HuffPost Live about pop star’s appropriation of Black culture with writer Everdeen Mason, Ohio State University professor Treva Lindsey, PopMatters editor Evan Sawdey, and comedian/television personality Amanda Seales.

EXCLUSIVE: Jeezy's Arrest Will Not Push Back "Seen It All" LP, Album Available For Streaming

(AllHipHop News) Young Jeezy found himself in hot water this week when the Atlanta rapper was arrested for having an illegal firearm. However, Jeezy’s current legal situation will not prevent him from releasing his upcoming Seen It All album on its scheduled date.

A rep for Jeezy tells AllHipHop.com that the LP will still be available on September 2 as planned. Seen It All includes the singles “Me OK” and the title track featuring Jay Z. Other guests to appear on the project include Akon, The Game, Rick Ross, Boosie, Future, and August Alsina.

AllHipHop broke the story that Jeezy was taken into custody prior to his “Under The Influence Tour” stop in Irvine, California. Police allegedly discovered an assault riffle in the possession of the CTE boss. Five of Jeezy’s associates were also arrested on gun related charges.

Reports suggested that Jeezy was involved in the shooting of concert promoter Eric Johnson that took place backstage at the Silicon Valley stop of the tour. Johnson was reportedly shot multiple times and later died at a hospital.

Mountain View, California Police have confirmed that Jeezy, nor any of the other people arrested, have not been charged with Johnson’s murder.

Just Jokes: 50 Cent Says Floyd Mayweather Can Read (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) After a repeated onslaught of jokes about Floyd Mayweather not being able to read, 50 Cent clarified that his former friend is not illiterate. 50 talked about his comedic shots at the boxing champion during an interview with Angie Martinez.

“Champ can read. He can read,” said 50. “I don’t want to hurt him, but he do things that agitates me. He do things to aggravate me a little bit. I look at him like my little brother too, but he’ll pick at you like, ‘You ain’t bigger than me’.”

50 also confirms his “Floyd-can’t-read” assault on Instagram was a response to the boxer suggesting in a recent interview that he, Nelly, and T.I. were no longer relevant artists.

According to 50, Floyd should be careful attacking him, because he knows a lot of personal information about Mayweather. He adds the reading jokes were “light.” The mogul then goes on to give “The Champ” props.

“We cannot take away who he is. He is who he is. He’s one of the best fighters in our actual time,” 50 said. “I never try to discredit what he worked for, but in him trying to say – what he was trying to do in his statement is discredit what I do.”

Despite admitting Floyd can read and acknowledging his talent, 50 did not stop posting pictures to his Instagram page making fun of Mayweather. He’s latest jab is below.

Game Throws Shots At G-Unit During Concert (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) G-Unit fans rejoiced when the group reunited this year, but one of the former members was not invited to take part in the reformed collective. After repeatedly going back-and-forth on whether he was open to getting back with the Unit, at the moment Game does not seem interested in connecting with 50 Cent and crew.

[ALSO READ: 50 Cent & G-Unit Drop “The Beauty Of Independence” EP]

“F*ck G-Unit! They can suck my d**k!” Game yelled at a recent concert.

This sentiment is different from what the Marrying The Game reality show star said earlier this yearBack in June, when asked about teaming with 50 again, Game told DJ Skee to “work that out.” He also said:

Congrats on G-Unit getting back together. That was cool… I saw the pictures online, and I actually, genuinely, from my heart thought it was a cool thing. Especially for Buck who is a good friend of mine. I just think anything that keeps him going musically is dope. Yayo, 50, and Banks and I haven’t talk to in a long time, but just seeing them back together that was cool. I thought that was dope.

On the other hand, 50 has been fairly consistent about not wanting to work with Game again. During his own interview in June, the Queens rapper shared he would pass on that reconciliation and suggested Game was bipolar.

“My issue with Game is I don’t know what happened with him period,” said 50. “How could you have an assessment on a person who’s flipped flopped their entire career? He’s almost bi-polar. If you watch it, the way he does things. He’s extremely emotional, then he goes to extremely aggressive.”

Childish Gambino Tapped To Voice Spider-Man

(AllHipHop News) Donald Glover, who also goes by the rap name Childish Gambino, has been lobbying for years to play Spider-Man on the big screen. The former Community star’s fans even started a #donald4spiderman hashtag campaign.

The Atlanta native was never selected to star as the Marvel superhero in a movie, but he will get to be the voice of Spidey on the small screen.

Glover will provide the vocals for the half-Hispanic, half-Black character Miles Morales on Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors. The 13-year-old Miles is Spider-Man in an alternate universe. This world’s web slinger, Peter Parker (Drake Bell), meets Miles as he jumps dimensions chasing the supervillain the Green Goblin.

“That’s the great part about the Spider-Man costume: He can be anybody,” said Glover. “Spider-Man could be a girl. Spider-Man could be an old man. You don’t know. So I just tried to be as me as possible, because you’re always just going to bring it back to yourself when you watch the show.”

Activism Flourishes at Afropunk Fest 14' (Day 1 Recap Video)

“HANDS UP!! DON’T SHOOT!! HANDS UP!! DON’T SHOOT!!”

Before D’Angelo ended this year’s Afropunk Fest as the show’s anticipated headliner, an extremely packed crowd put their hands up in honor of Mike Brown’s shooting and the following turn of events in Ferguson. This was the biggest act of protest at the music festival, but it wasn’t the first. Afropunk Fest may be about the music, the fashion, and all-around life style of punk culture within the black population, but this year’s festival has taken a further step to use the culture to help change common problems within it. Before festival goers even take a step near the 4 stages, they had to go through Afropunk’s Activism Row,a walkway put together by Progressive Pupil and Afropunk, consisting of different non-profits and local community projects, all fighting to help change the world through tackling different issues.

DSC_0047Though the topics in Activism Row were serious, the booths used interactive ways to get their message across. Whether they were painting their faces or taking informal pamphlets, the Afropunk community learned about these issues while participating in the dope festivities of the festival, but it never play down nor ruin the vibe of the festival. Exalt was one of the non-profits in Activism Row, with a program that teaches teens involved in the court system to become conscious about the problems in local communities. “It’s a nice way to bring something very serious to something very joyous and celebrating about culture” Says Exalt program manager, Jolanda Porter. “Activism Row forces the people to go to these issues and also says that it’s ok to talk about these things, it doesn’t have to be pretty, it doesn’t have to be nice.”

Exalt was only one of the dozen of non-profits that were at Commodore Barry Park that weekend, each of them with a unique way to help out the local communities and to spread that call of help to the Afropunk fan base. Even with all of the progressive movements at Afropunk, the non-profits at the Row didn’t shy away from taking on the brutal turn of events happening in Ferguson. Whit Jones of the Energy Climate Coalition was at Afropunk to inform about the People’s Climate March, but him along with the non-profit made a photo booth with the words “stop, don’t shoot.” Add this with a police brutality booth (ironically located right beside a group of NYPD police officers) and D’Angelo’s live remake of Bob Marley’s “Burning and Looting”, and you have a festival that’s all about celebrating a unique culture, but dares itself to take on the social issues occurring in communities everywhere.

DSC_0040With all of this being said, Afropunk Fest was an experience that needs to be continued. It doesn’t have the superstars, flashy screens, and huge atmosphere like the bigger festivals. However,  the what it did do  was thrive off of bringing together great people, great music, and a new perspective on how social issues can be brought up at such a unique gathering. It’s what made Afropunk Fest deeper than the average festival, with an alternative culture that’s rarely given it’s opportunity to shine.  Check out our recap of Day 1 of Afropunk Fest featuring performances from Shabazz Palaces Alice Smith, Lianne La Havas and many more. There’s also a full gallery of performances and Actvism Row in after the jump.

Trillectro: Where Culture and Music Collide

Photography by Lauren Williams

Brought to you by the good folks of DCtoBC, Trillectro is slowly but surely on it’s way to becoming one of the best musical festivals in existence.

Sponsored by Reebok, Karma Loop, Heineken, Shoe City, Events DC and hosted by Lowkey of YouHeardThatNew.com, the #Trillectro2014 line-up pretty much says it all. Big Sean. Baauer. Migos. Rae Sremmurd. SZA. Rome Fortune. Goldlink. Sango. Lightshow and many other talented artists of the Hip Hop and EDM persuasions all blessed the stage on Saturday, August 23, 2014.
The day started off cloudy and wet but that did not stop hundreds of fans from piling into RFK Festival Grounds in Washington, D.C ready to enjoy a great day of music. The beats were loud, the energy was high and the vibe was positive. Many memorable moments occurred throughout the day but it was Travi$ Scott who reaffirmed my love for Hip Hop. Here are the series of events.

Travi$ Scott runs onto the stage. He looks into the photo pit and instructs all members of the media to leave. “GET THE F### OUT!, I only want to see the faces of my real fans,” he says. They all stand there, looking perplexed. Travi$ Scott tells fans to jump the gate and come closer to him. Some fans jump the gate, others are blocked by security. Travi$ Scott grows impatient. His request has still not been fulfilled. He jumps off the stage, into the photo pit, over the gate and performs his entire set in the middle of the crowd. My eyes lit up and for a few minutes, I got lost in all of the excitement. As Travi$ Scott’s performance starting coming to a end, the DJ drops Don’t Play. Scott does his verse and seconds later it was exit Travi$ Scott. Enter Big Sean.

Sean performed verses from all of the fan favorites. Gang Bang, Dance (Ass…), Burn, Mercy, but it was his verse for Sanctified that really did it for me. It kinda made me wonder why the hell it isn’t on the album version. Thank God for iPhone,Instagram and Trillectro’s soundcloud.

When it was all over, many of us walked back to our cars and proceeded to head to the Trillectro After Party. As we were leaving, I couldn’t help over hear everyone talk about how much fun they had and the performances they enjoyed the most. I thought to myself as I listened to all the excitement around me, “I can’t wait until next year”. If you missed it this year, maybe by then you’ll get with it and join the rest of us. Until then, always remember to keep it trill.

For more pictures and videos from Trillectro, don’t hesitate to search the hashtags #trillectro and #trillectro2014 on Twitter and Instagram.

Stop Blaming Hip-Hop!

Blaming Hip-Hop for the problems in and out of our community is some real Stockholm syndrome s###. We are not to blame for the systematic attacks on our people. Long before Kool Herc spun at a party or the world heard Rappers Delight the police we killing us in cold blood. From Camden to Watts and Chicago to New Orleans there have been countless cases of police terrorism and lynchings in this country over the past 500 years. Wearing a SnapBack doesn’t give the police a right to harass and beat you, same as Trayvon wearing a hoodie shouldn’t give predators like Zimmerman a pass to kill a child. The true problem is that this country built it self and still feeds itself off of Black Death. Hip-Hop music was not there when slaves attempting to escape were tied to horses and quartered in front of the entire plantation to strike fear in men, women and children. The music was not there when Emmett Till was snatched from his bed or when the freedom riders were attacked by the side of the road.

Rap music didn’t assassinate our leaders based on COINTELPRO documents and the eradication of a possible Black Messiah, the FBI did that. Hip-Hop didn’t create crack cocaine and flood it into Black & Brown neighborhoods, the CIA did that.

Blaming our music ignores the fact that this is nothing new, it has been updated to suit the times but it’s nothing but Jim Crow 2.0. Hip-Hop is not the problem, in fact it has been a powerful tool to spread the truth about the injustices committed against us here in America since it’s inception.

The system attempts to co-opt it based on the power it has. Hip-Hop is has spread all over the world and appealed to all as a music of the counter culture, a buck back at the system and a rise against oppression. The spirit of our culture is as brave as the Spirituals we sung on the plantation laden with hidden messages leading us from bondage.

It’s as genius as Jazz and the flatted 5th’s we played from memory and improvisation while the society that danced to it wouldn’t allow itself believe we had the mental capacity to compose it. Rock & Roll, Doo-Wop, Soul, R&B, House, Go-Go, Hip-Hop and every other musical form we have created in America has been a powerful tool in our fight for Freedom, Justice and Equality.
Use it.

Bobby Schmurda: I'm Doing Music Until I Die Like Michael Jackson

(AllHipHop News) Dr. Conrad Murray may have a new client in the future. In a recent interview, the 20 year old burgeoning rap star, Bobby Schmurda discussed his deal with Epic Records, aiming to “go out like Michael Jackson” and more.

Bobby Schmurda has admitted in past interviews that he used to sell drugs and famously raps that he’s “been selling crack since the fifth grade” on his single “Hot N*gga”. In his interview with Billboard, Schmurda reveals that he has left the drug selling game and his Michael Jackson aspirations:

This is the new trap, and we’re going trap till the wheels fall off, then keep going. I’m doing this till I die — I’m going out like Michael Jackson.

He’s already following in Jackson’s shoes by signing to Epic Records, which released the posthumous Michael Jackson album Xscape on May 13th. While details of his signing are rumored to include upwards of $2 million advance, Epic Records’ Executive Vice President of Urban A&R Sha Money says, no price was too high to sign Schmurda:

There’s no such thing as overpaying a young black man. This is an opportunity when someone can either take the money and go away, or take it and blow up.

Schmurda is preparing to release a
mixtape/EP Schmurda She Wrote later this year along with a debut album next year.
