5 & Done: Bandman Kevo

(AllHipHop Features) The city of Chicago has been the home base for some of the most talked about new artists in rap music over the last few years.

Proof of the rise to prominence by Chitown’s new rap class was evidenced by the fact that one-third of the artists (Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, Lil Durk, & Lil Bibby) included in this year’s coveted XXL Freshmen list hailed from the Windy City.

There’s another Chicago-based rapper that is on the verge of breaking out on the national level as well. The Southside’s Bandman Kevo recently released his debut mixtape Fast Life. The DJ Holiday-hosted project has garnered the 24-year-old buzzing performer attention across the Blogosphere.

Fast Life contains some of Kevo’s biggest street bangers from the last few years including “Baller In Me (Remix)” featuring Chief Keef, “Wonna Be” featuring King Louie, and “Want My Money” featuring associate ZMoney. Kevo and Z first connected through a mutual producing partner which resulted in the two rappers collaborating on three tracks off ZMoney’s The Greatest Trap Show mixtape as well.

Besides working with several rap stars from his hometown, Kevo also has the support of a Chicago rap legend. Platinum selling emcee Twista connected with the young rhymer after the Hip Hop vet’s manager put him on to some of Bandman’s music. Subsequently, Twista signed Kevo to his GMG imprint.

Bandman Kevo spoke with AllHipHop.com about his new mixtape, his native city’s Hip Hop scene, and what level of success he looks to achieve in his career.

At what point did you decide rap music was something you wanted to pursue as a profession?

I was seeing a lot of people come up in Chicago as far as music, so I said I’m going to to start taking it seriously. I had been rapping for about four or five years, but I didn’t start to take it seriously until about two years ago. I saw a lot of people making it in Chicago, so that was one of the main reasons for me to take it full force.

The Chicago Drill scene has gotten a lot of attention the last few years. How do you feel about rapper’s outside of Chicago adopting that sound for their own musical style?

I just feel like Chicago has a lot of creativity and talent. I just think we don’t get enough eyes on us. We don’t get enough attention for our city like how Atlanta, Miami, or Cali rappers get. There’s more real fans out-of-town than there is in town.

We’re getting paid attention to, but not like other rappers like a Kevin Gates. There’s other people out where he’s at that will show more love than Chicago people.

Why do you think that is? Chicago has a pretty long history in Hip Hop. You can go back to Common and Crucial Conflict.

They could have probably been bigger. It’s just Chicago… there’s a lot of hate out here. They’d rather see a Future or a Rich Homie [Quan]. You’ll have a show – even if you’re Chief Keef – they won’t come show you love like they’ll show Future or an outsider. That’s just how it is.

It seems like out-of-town people mess with Chicago people hard. That’s crazy. It’s like if Durk goes to New Jersey, he’ll get more love out-of-town too.

How does your new project and your overall brand set you apart from other rising acts out now?

A lot artists ain’t willingly to spend the money. Me not being signed, I got DJ Holiday on the mixtape. I got a few majors artists on the mixtape. I’m taking it to that next level, instead of just waiting on somebody else. I’m looking at it like, “I’m gonna do it myself to make it to the top.”

How would you define “the top” for you?

I want to be next to Diddy, [Rick] Ross, all of them. I’m trying to get up there. I’m trying to get my music nationally heard, be on the radio, doing more shows getting paid $20,000-30,000 a show or more. I’m trying to be on Drake’s level.

Wiz Khalifa Talks Making Songs Inspired By Vine, Addresses Vanilla Ice's Diss + MORE (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Wiz Khalifa is doing it for the Vine. In an interview at Webster Hall prior to his private SiriusXM show this past Monday (August 3rd), Wiz explained how some of his album will be geared toward social media, addresses Vanilla Ice’s displeasure in Wiz’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle song and more.

Vine has over 40 million registered users and tens of millions of users who actively post and view media on the social media site. According to Wiz during his interview with DJ Whoo Kid, he’s kept his eye on the social media platform and has structured his album accordingly:

I just want to be the best of the best however I feel. There’s song on the album, like “A*s Drop” that are inspired by Vine. The Vine comps and just knowing that so much music gets popping off of Vine comps and people looking at a*s shaking. So it’s like, I’m going to make a song that’s going to go crazy on Vine on my album. Gearing it towards that, towards the youth.

Last week, Vanilla Ice voiced his disinterest in Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign and Juicy J’s “Shellshocked” song for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie. Wiz not only is not offended by Vanilla Ice’s comments but feels Ice should understand how that type of judgment feels based on the reception to his 1991 “Ninja Rap” song:

I respect his opinion. I don’t have beef with Vanilla Ice. He just said he doesn’t like the song. Which is cool because I greew up listening to ‘Ninja Rap’ and there was probably a lot of people who thought that was corny at that time too. But he stuck with it. And that’s part of my childhood.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Rappers And Singers Use CCC's To Protect Themselves From Social Media Betrayal!

In this day and age, where social media is rampant and personal lives became the talk of the Twitter Town…rappers and singers are protecting themselves. Apparently, artists are creating “celebrity confidentiality contracts” or CCC’s that their significant others must sign. See, a lot of these rappers are living their lives on the DL and they want to ensure that what they do does not see the light of day. Others are just looking to preserve their privacy in the most basic form. But, generally there are R&B singers and some rappers that are pushing straightness but living undercover. They need to know that they won’t be put out there against their will.

Hip-Hop Rumors: The Game Has Traitors In His Midst!

The Game has been one of the most polarizing rappers of the modern era. He’s balanced the streets, home life and Hollywood for a minute now. But, now it seems there are parts that are fraying off and that’s whatever remains of his crew. I know he runs with a bunch of people, but its not like the Black Wall Street of old. Now, I’m not going to name names because what if this is wrong!? Lets just say that rappers around Game right now may not be the most loyal dudes. They may be reporting back to other rappers that hate The Game. I already heard that some information has been sent over to 50 Cent. Why? I don’t know. I thought 50 was ignoring The Game at this point. Anyway, apparently these dudes are going to break off from him and start a diss campaign very soon.

Hip Hop Rumors: Future's Checks To Be Garnished

Future may have more to worry about besides Ciara no longer flossing her engagement ring. According to theJasmineBRAND.com, your favorite crooner is gonna have to give up more paper for child support every month.

“The 30-year-old rapper and his baby mama Jessica Smith – who share a 10-year-old son – came to a child support agreement in January 2013. The deal had the rapper paying $1,662 a month in support based on him claiming his monthly income was only $16,516.
Then in March 2013, Jessica submitted a child support modification suit, claiming he lied about his monthly income and believed he made more than 50k a month. She demanded an increase in support.

theJasmineBRAND.com has learned that Future and the mother of his child came to an agreement last month. Due to the rappers income increase in monthly income from 16k to 50k, his support was increased to $2,800 a month.
The support payment will be taken directly from his music checks and given to his baby mama. He was also ordered to pay $3,952 in past due child support.”

Future has a total of four little ones, but considering some of the things he spends on, $2,800 shouldn’t be much to a boss right?

Hip-Hop Rumors: Guess Who's Been Added To The Love and Hip-Hop LA Cast?

If anyone cares, looks like Love and Hip-Hop L.A. decided to turn things up a notch and add a big name rapper, and who better than Soulja Boy himself.

Via TMZ:

“Soulja Boy’s getting a heavy dose of reality … TMZ has learned the “Crank That” rapper’s just been added to the cast of “Love & Hip Hop: L.A” — in a last-ditch effort to pump some life into the show.

Sources close to production tell us … the show’s been struggling with weak story lines and uninteresting characters … and producers felt they needed to add a big name rapper to liven things up.

Right now … Ray J is the biggest star on “L&HHLA” … and producers think he and Soulja Boy will be a huge hit together. Sources close to Ray J say he’s pumped about his new co-star.

If it’s drama they want … the sizzurp-slurpin’ Soulja should bring plenty of it.”

Man Pleads Not Guilty After Biting Off Man's Fingertip At Jay Z/Beyonce Concert

(AllHipHop News) Biting in Hip Hop is never good but this is ridiculous. Roberto Garnicia, 25 year old man who allegedly bit off the fingertip of another man at Jay Z and Beyonce’s concert this past Saturday (August 2nd) has pled not guilty to his charges.

Garnicia was charged with mayhem, battery and battery with serious bodily injury after engaging in a physical altercation with an unidentified man. According to reports, Garnicia has pled not guilty to the charges and faces up to eight years in prison if convicted.

Garnicia allegedly groped a woman during Jay Z and Beyonce’s “On The Run Tour” stop at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl, which incited a fight between him and the woman’s boyfriend.

Michael Jackson Facing New Sexual Abuse Accusations

(AllHipHop News) Iconic performer Michael Jackson passed away five years ago, but even in death the King of Pop cannot avoid new allegations of sexual abuse. Court papers have been filed against Jackson suggesting the singer engaged in improper activities with a minor back in the 1980’s.

James Safechuck claims Jackson abused him over 100 times during a four year period starting when he was ten years old. They apparently met filming a Pepsi commercial, and according to Safechuck, the two slept in the same hotel beds during Jackson’s “Bad Tour” in 1988.

In court documents, the now 36-year-old man states Jackson “engaged in a calculated course of conduct to lure both [Safechuck] and his parents into a false sense of security and normalcy.”

The docs also say:

[Jackson] was successful in his efforts to the point that [Safechuck] endured repeated acts of sexual abuse of a heinous nature and was brainwashed by the decedent into believing they were acts of love and instigated by James himself rather than the decedent.

The Jackson estate is asking the lawsuit be dismissed. Attorney Howard Weitzman told E!, “This is a person that made his claim five years after Michael died, more than 20 years after the incidents supposedly happened and has given sworn testimony that Michael never did anything inappropriate to him.”

Michael Jackson had been accused on child sexual abuse in the past. He was acquitted of sex abuse charges in 2005. A hearing for Safechuck’s petition has been scheduled for September 4th.

Jackson died in 2009. His posthumous album Xscape was released earlier this year.

“I’m a very hands-on person when it comes to my work,” Dupri told Billboard. “I put my all into every project. But when I’m not allowed to do what I do, then I know it’s time for me to move on. Mariah and I enjoy working together and will continue to make great music together in the future.”

Dupri also served as the executive producer for Carey’s latest album Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse. The project underperformed commercially, only selling 58,000 copies in its opening week. That was the lowest first week total for a studio album in the singer’s career.

Carey is now reportedly working with music business veteran Kevin Liles. The former Def Jam executive recently teamed with Lyor Cohen and Todd Moscowitz to create the new label 300.

Kanye West Calls For Celebrity Civil Rights Movement Against Paparazzi

“I’m the smartest celebrity you’ve ever f***ing dealt with. I’m not Britney Spears,” said West.

Kanye also chastised attorney Nate Goldberg for “representing scum” for profit and for using the word “n***a” when quoting some of the Chicago native’s lyrics from the song “Flashing Lights.”

“You have to ask for a hall pass. You can’t just say the ‘n-word’ around me,” Kanye told Goldberg. “It offends me because you’re a white person saying n***a.”

The deposition also included Ye making comparisons between the 1960’s civil rights movement and modern-day celebrities fighting for privacy rights against invasive photographers.

“I mean in the ’60s people used to hold up ‘Die N****r’ signs when my parents were in the sit-ins also,” Kanye stated. “We, as group of minorities here in L.A., as celebrities have to ban together to influence guys like this — guys trying to take the picture, guys trying to get the big win, guys trying to get the check.”

West is facing a civil lawsuit filed by Daniel Ramos. The photog is suing Kanye for a July 2013 incident where the Yeezus creator smashed Ramos’ camera and allegedly assaulted him at LAX airport.

West agreed to a plea deal in a criminal case and was sentenced to two years probation.

Freddie Gibbs Says Young Jeezy Lied About Financing His Career (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Jeezy has been making his rounds to different media outlets to promote his upcoming album Seen It All. During the promo run, the CTE general was asked about his relationship with former protégé Freddie Gibbs. One of those media stops including a sit down with Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning where Jeezy explained how he spent money to finance Gibb’s career.

[ALSO READ: Jeezy Speaks On Issues With Freddie Gibbs]

According to the Snowman, he paid for a Gibbs music video that was never released, airplane flights, and other expenses. Jeezy told Ebro his business dealings with the Gary, Indiana rapper left him $300,000-400,000 in the hole.

The following day, Gibbs went to Hot 97 as well to address Jeezy’s statements. He presented his side of why the deal between the two did not work out. After first stating he respects Jeezy, Gibbs said the two rappers just had different approaches to the industry.

After parting ways with CTE, Gibbs released diss tracks aimed at his former boss. He claimed it was Jeezy’s untruthful accounts about their business relationship shared amongst mutual friends that sparked those songs.

“The reason why I lashed out the way I did with the records and the words that I said is truly because of what was said yesterday,” explained Gibbs. “He made it seem like he saved some little, poor Gary boy to the rap game, but that definitely isn’t the case. Before I got with Young Jeezy, I was on the cover of XXL. Before I got with Young Jeezy, I was on tours. Before I got with him, I was making money. I didn’t take a dollar from Young Jeezy. That 300K/400K thing, that’s a total lie.”

Gibbs also added that he did not receive an advance from Jeezy, and he only shot one video during his time with CTE which was discarded because he did not like the final product. He said that was the only financial loss Jeezy suffered as it relates to his career.

Another point Gibbs had issue with was Jeezy saying they saw each other in a L.A. club and Jeezy requested for Gibbs to come and speak with him, but Gibbs refused.

“That’s totally untrue. Another lie in the Jeezy movie. He got an album coming out. I expect him to do these type of things,” said Gibbs. “He just seen me the day before yesterday.”
