Longtime Gucci collaborator Zaytoven produced tracks for TH4 as well as earlier projects like Trap House, Hard To Kill, and Trap-A-Thon. Zay spoke with DJ Smallz Eye about the Brick Squad leader’s ability to drop music even when he is not a free man and his influence on rappers that came after him.

“This is one guy you can’t beat when it comes to work ethic. This guy literally can sleep for two hours a day and work the rest of the day,” said Zaytoven. “He’s one of the best of our time to do this, especially rap music or trap music. I think a lot of people stem from Gucci Mane. A lot of the new artists today come from him… He’s the godfather of a lot of this music going on.”

AllHipHop.com's Top 75 Underground/Indie & Emerging Artists Of 2014

The term underground isn’t a dirty word. It actually represents a healthy majority of the music that is released today as only a handful of artists are able to secure mainstream radio play…even if they are very well known and beloved.

However, this doesn’t mean that outstanding efforts should not be recognized regardless of your Hip Hop pedigree.

In 2014 AllHipHop.com searched the country from left coast to right coast and top to bottom to find talent from all walks. Boy did we find it!

We encountered more nouns and verbs and clever double entendres than we ever thought we could find in one sitting. They were served up on a golden platter and we there with knives and forks ready to eat that dopeness up!

This year we decided to do something a little bit different. We know that heads get bored with long lists of artists. So, taking that into consideration…we figured it was time to do what AllHipHop.com has always done in order to maintain it’s relevancy…we changed it up!

We evolved this year’s list into something a little outside the box. So, instead of having to read all about what we thought of the artists we’ve selected, we thought we’d invite some of the artists to speak for themselves about one another. It’s extra easy to get cats to talk about themselves but we actually got to see the genuine community that resides in the culture through this short documentary that we put together which allows for artists to be fans of one another. We truly believe it’s a win for Hip Hop whenever artists show support for music they didn’t make and the people who created it.

Some of these artists you may be  very familiar with…some maybe not! But every artist selected put forth something extra special in 2014 whether it was on a stage, in the booth, or in the streets! This year we saw a huge swing back toward substance and skill and we could not be happier! Congratulations to the 75 artists that made it! Salute!

Take a look at the video below to see who the Top 75 artists are and please remember there is NO RANKING! They were all wonderful and we enjoyed them all!

As always, if you know of someone that you feel we missed hit us up in the comments and let us know! You might be the one to help secure them on the list this year!

Congratulations to the artist that made the list and to those who did not…the slate is now wiped clean! You have a whole new year to claim your rightful places and we can’t wait to see what you’ve got brewing in 2015!

Free Screenings Of Selma Available For New York City Students

Right in time for the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Selma chronicles the events that led to the passage of the legislation and helped shape the Civil Rights Movement.

Now, thanks to the generosity of contributors including power broker Vernon Jordan, BET Chairman Debra Lee, Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons, American Express Chairman Ken Chenault and more, a fund has been created which will allow  27,000 NYC students to view the film in select theatres January 8 through January 19.

Bill Lewis, who also contributed to the fund said, “Martin Luther King, Jr.’s momentous journey in Alabama is an important piece of American history. We are passionate about bringing this story to New York City’s students and we encourage business leaders in other cities to organize similar programs so that more students around the country have the chance to see this powerful film about an epic chapter in American history.”

Directed by Ava DuVernay, the Golden Globe nominated film has already gained praise for it’s depiction of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., portrayed by David Oyelowo. In addition to the screenings in New York, those in Selma will reportedly be able to view the film for free as well.

Is "Empire" The Real Or The Real Fake?

For its debut last night, the new Fox show “Empire” was all the rage, and I was one of those watching as Terrance Howard, Taraji P. Henson and a gaggle of others that gave everybody something to talk about. And while I think Terrance Howard’s ever-changing hair may have gotten the most Twitter attention, the more significant topic is the family structure presented in the show.

Lucious Lyon (Terrance Howard), the head of the Empire music conglomerate, struggles to keep his musically oriented empire running as he is continually presented with a bevy of new and reoccurring matters within his family. And then there is the show’s true star Taraji P. Henson aka Cookie, the feisty, hardcore matriarch just getting home from a 17 year bid.

Cookie, a self-proclaimed “dope dealing mom,” immediately begins to kick ass and take names, even going so far as to beat her own son like he stole something. The 40-something character is a proverbial whirlwind in the show, as well as the cornerstone of much of the backbiting that begins to brew as soon as “Empire” starts. Almost all the male characters go to her to set their schemes or, like Lucious, are the subject of the shake down. She goes from scene to scene chin-checking fools and, based on my social media feed, people love it. Cookie – apparently a former drug magistrate – is the real reason Lucious is able to get his empire off the ground.

As a man, Lucious is a pretty contradictory person. He boasts about selling drugs and creating this company, but he definitely cannot seem to run his family in the same way. “I ain’t know nothing about raising y’all – Cookie did all that,” Lucious says to his youngest after laughing about his beat down at the hands of his mother. However, how could Cookie be the drug queenpin and a great mom? He’s got three radically different sons. One is a pseudo thug rapper, the other is gay as well as a singer and the last one is so clean-cut, he’d probably be better served in a corporate bank America, not in music. And all of these guys are seemingly in competition to run the company when Lucicous departs. There is one flashback scene where Lucious attempts to “throw away” his middle son who begins to show homosexual tendencies in the 1990’s somewhere. Where they do that at?

Excuse My Blackness, But Eminem, the Greatest Rapper Ever!

Eminem is the greatest rapper ever—dead or alive! There! I said it! Do you know how hard it was to write those words? Do you understand the implications of these words? I literally had to throw my blackness and Negritude in the garbage (not to mention forsake my beloved Jay Z, whom I personally think is the greatest rapper, but that’s just my very subjective personal opinion.)

Now before you get to s**t-talking and calling me an Eminem “Stan” (like I really care)—I’ve never bought an Eminem record (and I should be ashamed of myself for that, but I did buy a Bubba Sparxxx’s CD once.) Eminem should be in every hip-hop head’s “Top 5 Dead or Alive.” Anything else is intellectually dishonest! Yes! It’s time for hip-hop heads far & wide, especially black hip-hop heads who have issues with the whole white thingy to get off that horse and face the painful truth; that is, a Caucasian brother is doing “our” genre better than we (blacks).

For far too long we’ve been “romancing the stone”—indulging in a shameful attempt to place Tupac and Biggie at the top of the Pantheon of great rappers, mostly based on romanticizing their deaths and hero-worship. Indeed! They are “Top 5” material, but I’m talking about the crème de la crème—the best of the best or, as Eminem rapped, “The juggernaut of this rap s###/like it or not!”

Kenny G may not have bested John Coltrane and James Brown is still “The Godfather of Soul,” but this genre known as rap music has a white Rap God at its forefront. Two Diamond songs, two Diamond albums, 13 Grammys, a Guinness World Book of Records (for “Rap God”), an Oscar, Golden Globe, Emmy, MTV & BET awards, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Only an ignoramus or a person who’s never won s### would slight the many awards Eminem has racked up.

Lyrically gifted beyond all reason—Eminem is the greatest rapper to ever spit—black or white! He is no Macklemore or any other white rapper that ever spit it! Yes! It’s time to end this debate or move the debate to who’s the second through fifth best.

Now I shall return to my blackness.

Did Sticky Fingaz Shoot Up The Source Awards Back In The Day?

I don’t know how it happened, but I stumbled on this video on the internet. And it seems to show Sticky Fingaz of Onyx fame shooting up the Source Awards back in the day. Apparently, they were up for the big honor (at the time) and did not win. Sticky pulls out the burner and lets of a few rounds in the ceiling. If I am correct, I even see shell casings coming out of the gun. Look at it and tell me what you think about the validity of the video…or is it fake?

Fresh Lyrical Beef For Eminem

I am quite sure Eminem is not thinking about The Outsidaz at this point in this life or times. Another day, another beef. But, I am wondering…if he is in the back of that brain of his. Why? For me, I remember Eminem credible because of the Newark, NJ collective. They cosigned him before Dr. Dre. But now, there is the latest and its better than the Young Zee diss.

AZZ IZ of the Outz…goes in on him, but also reserves a couple bars for Slaughter House and even Yelawolf.

He calls Eminem a bunch of names but are there any facts in this song?

And then there is Young Zee…one of the biggest names from the 90’s in Newark, NJ.

Universal Music Files Lawsuit Over Mixtapes Featuring Eminem & Others Being Sent To Prison Inmates

(AllHipHop News) Universal Music Group is going after companies that sell care packages for incarcerated individuals. The world’s largest music corporation claims service providers like Centric Group are engaging in copyright infringement by including mixtapes with UMG artists’ music in the packages.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit states, “defendants boast on their website that their business ‘was developed to eliminate contraband,’ yet the infringing copies of Plaintiffs’ sound recordings and musical compositions, in which Defendants unlawfully transact and from which they unjustly profit, are contraband personified.”

Centric affiliates such as Access Securepak and Keefe Group allow family and friends to purchase the tapes as part of bundles and then send those packages to inmates in prison. Eminem, LL Cool J, The Jackson 5, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder have been named as some of the acts allegedly affected by the companies including their music on the offered mixtapes.

While UMG does recognize there are authorized distributors of mixtapes, the lawsuit claims the assorted music projects provided by websites like Ari’s Mixtapes are “nothing more than collections of infringing, piratical compilations of copyrighted or otherwise legally protected sound recordings and copyrighted musical composition.”

Universal is seeking $150,000 for each copyrighted work that has been infringed, illegal earnings, punitive damages, and more.

Wiz Khalifa – "Raw"

Wiz Khalifa’s video begins with a disclaimer that it may cause seizures if you’re epileptic. The Gerard Victor directed video  definitely holds true to that promise.  With flashing lights and bodies in tow, Wiz delivers “Raw” straight off of his Grammy-nominated Blacc Hollywood album, which is still in stores.

PREMIERE: Big B'z – "Oo Lord"

Brooklyn, NY is making a strong resurgence onto the music scene and Big B’z looks to continue that momentum by releasing his new single “Oo Lord” and this one is in fact for the streets. Looking to follow up his summer smash “Another Zoe” which featured Rico Love and Jim Jones, Big B’z gets some grimy production from Genius Klub and Rick Steel to set the tone on “Oo Lord”.

Kurupt Says Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes Taught Him How To Leave Death Row

(AllHipHop News) At one point Death Row Records was the hottest rap label in the game. Then one-by-one artists began to leave the West Coast based company. One of those premier acts that was once part of the Death Row roster is Kurupt.

Tha Dogg Pound emcee sat down with VladTV and revealed a member of TLC showed him how to cut ties from Death Row. According to Kurupt, it was not an easy task to get out of his contract with the label.

“The one who taught me how to leave [Death Row] was Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes,” said Kurupt. “It was Lisa that taught me how I could leave business-wise. If I tell you [how], I gotta kill you.”

Kurupt goes on to add the reason he left Death Row was because he made better business connections in Philadelphia. The Kuruption! album creator also stated his then relationship with rapper Foxy Brown played a role in his decision to break from the Row.
