EXCLUSIVE: Kevin Powell Calls For Boycott Of R. Kelly

(AllHipHop News) R&B singer R. Kelly has been facing criticism over claims he was involved in sexual acts with underaged girls for over a decade. Despite that cloud of accusation hanging over him, the 46-year-old performer has managed to release numerous albums to varying success. Political activist, author, and president of BK Nation Kevin Powell says it is time for the public to stop supporting Kelly until he openly addresses the allegations.

Powell and his BK Nation grassroots movement is calling for radio stations, video channels, music publications, websites, members of the entertainment industry, and consumers to boycott R. Kelly’s music. The organization created a Change.org petition asking signers to agree not to buy Kelly’s music until the singer apologizes for his reported behavior, undergoes counseling, and condemns sexual violence.

Kevin Powell gave AllHipHop.com an exclusive statement about his petition:

Because of my own past personal  experiences and a commitment to counseling, healing, raw honesty, and action, I have worked against sexual violence in all forms since the early 1990s. This is an issue that is deeply personal to me, especially as I have done activism and community work in New York City, across America, and internationally. I’ve written and spoken about the R. Kelly saga which has dragged on for 15 long and painful years. The new and very detailed information just released raises so many red flags that BK Nation, my new national organization, felt compelled to create a  petition asking concerned citizens and the entertainment community not  to support R. Kelly’s musical career any further, or at least not until he speaks openly and honestly about all the allegations, and takes ownership for behavior that apparently has not only been destructive and hurtful to others, but to himself as well. Beyond R. Kelly this petition is about any man, any person, who thinks there is nothing wrong with sexual assault, with sexual violence, with sexual misconduct and irresponsibility, no matter the form. We are saying yes there is and that men especially have got to raise our voices loudly and say enough. This kind of behavior is literally helping to destroy our  communities.

In 2008, R. Kelly was acquitted of child pornography charges stemming from a videotape prosecutors claimed showed Kelly having sex and urinating on a teenage girl. The allegations rose again over the past week when The Village Voice published an interview with former Chicago Sun-Times reporter Jim DeRogatis. The article presented previously unknown details about other allegations against Kelly.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Rihanna Has A New Rapper Love?

Rihanna is pretty much living her life, but the super starlet was recently seen with none other than A$AP Rocky on a low-key date in SoHo New York. You know, she was previously seen with Drake and it was heavily rumored that they were an item. BUT, that never manifested in the truth form. But, according to the New York Post, the pair A$AP RiRi went out on an intimate date Monday. They have a relationship if you recall. A source with the New York Post said, “They were playing pool and hanging by the stairwell. They weren’t kissing or anything, but they were looking very friendly.” Sounds about right.

These mofos are living the life.

Buckshot Addresses Hot 97's Ebro Darden & The Current State Of NYC Radio

(AllHipHop News) First it was Houston’s Riff Raff taking shots at Hot 97’s Ebro Darden, now it’s Brooklyn’s Buckshot calling out the program director. According to the Duck Down emcee, Ebro is the reason New York Hip Hop radio has fallen of. Buckshot expressed his thoughts on the matter while on The Combat Jack Show.

The issues between the two started because on a previous episode of the CBJ show Ebro referenced Duck Down artists when explaining that women don’t listen to their style of rap. It’s his reasoning for why New York Hip Hop has not been as prominent or get the radio spins it once did. Buck disagrees.

“So here we got this Duncan Hines version of Hip Hop that Ebro wanna come in and introduce,” says Buckshot. “You was in L.A. The s**t didn’t get f**ked up until you got here.”

Buck goes on to directly respond to Ebro’s claim that women don’t listen to Duck Down’s music:

You wanna know the reason why chicks don’t f**k with Buckshot the way you would like it or see it, is because you stopped f**king with me. And when you stop f**king with me, automatically people start going, “you underground”. So I say guess what? If you’re gonna put me there, I’m gonna go above you, cause I’m still above you now. But what I’m gonna do is- I’m gonna be the illest underground n***a you ever seen. So no matter what ,you gotta always get back to me. Cause what’s underground? The root. So when they talk about us, we are the root of Hip Hop.

He then chastises Ebro for not standing up to the corporate owners of radio stations who demand that certain records by major artists get played repeatedly in order to secure ratings.

Buck later tells Darden to choose sides – either support the Kanye Wests and Jay Zs or support the Sean Ps and Joey Bada$$es. He even accuses Ebro of payola and calls him an “Uncle Tom.”

“Ebro is an Uncle Tom. Why? Because your uncle will always sell you out for something that you will never get,” adds Buckshot. “But we the ones that pay the price, because we’re sitting at our crib going, ‘damn, this s**t’s playing again’.”

The Coolest, Oddest And Most Outrageous Urban Christmas Pictures

There is nothing like Christmas time. Here are some funny pictures from a decidedly urban perspective. Jesus may not approve, but Black Santa is down brown!

Shady Claus! Eminem defines bad Santa unless your name is Hailie.

Only Eazy-E is going to celebrate Christmas with a pair of firearms. But, the late, great rapper was one of a kind and most people don’t remember how Compton was back in the day.

Wow. Snoop looking like the drug addicted, unemployed step brother of Cliff Huxtable in this one.

Somebody decided it was a good idea to have the Ying Yang Twins endorse their store.

Can Jeezy create a remix of “My President Is Black” called “My Santa Claus Is Black,” because kids in the hood need it.

The Black Santa Is GOD.

A MF wish Diddy was his Santa Claus! Its hard out in these streets and Diddy is rich. What’s his new name? Diddy Claus? Saint Sean? Come through son and we got cookies and Ciroc.

The Cos did it!

MF Doom Bot Claus

Claus MADE!

Down With The Kings of the North Pole, Run, LL and Rush.

These last Christmas diddy-bop comes from the OG’s over at Ego Trip, who created a whole holiday reworking of several Hip-Hop classics. Check them out below.

Drake Speaks On "Beef" With Kendrick Lamar & Comparisons To Ja Rule

(AllHipHop News) The perceived verbal back-and-forth between two of the leading young voices in Hip Hop has been a topic on conversation for the last several months. After Kendrick Lamar mentioned Drake among the emcees on his “Control” verse, many waited to hear what the Young Money rapper would say in response.

While some listeners felt Drake’s “The Language” and a few lines on the “Sh!t (Remix)” were aimed at Kendrick, the “Started From The Bottom” rhymer tells Vibe that he’s not into beefing on wax or responding to “Control” in particular.

[ALSO CHECK OUT: Future – Sh!t feat. Drake & Juicy J (Remix)]

In the magazine’s cover story, Drake says:

I don’t ever want to get into responses. It’s a commitment to go there. “The Language” is just energy. What it was inspired by, I’m sure that, and other things. It’s just me talking my s###. I never once felt the need to respond to that record. The sentiment he was putting forth is what he should have. Of course you wanna be the best. Where it became an issue is that I was rolling out an album while that verse was still bubbling, so my album rollout became about this thing. What am I supposed to say? Nah, we’ll be buddy-buddy? Mind you, I never once said he’s a bad guy [or] I don’t like him. I think he’s a f###### genius in his own right, but I also stood my ground as I should. And with that came another step, which then I have to realize I’m being baited and I’m not gonna fall. Jordan doesn’t have to play pickup to prove that he could play ball, no offense. But I’m not gonna give you the chance to shake me necessarily, ’cause I feel great. There’s no real issue. It’s tough because the people wanna see us tear each other down; I don’t wanna give them that. There’s no point. I have no ill feelings toward that guy. It’s just like, it’s there for me if I wanna fall for it. I’m just too smart for that. Hopefully it’s the last time I gotta talk about this, ’cause every time I open my mouth up about it, they take this piece and take this piece. And he’s hungry, so he’s going to do what he has to do like the BET [cypher]. But again, it’s not enough for me to go. We haven’t seen each other [since the BET cypher,] but I’m sure we’ll see each other and it’ll be cool. And if it’s not, then I guess that’s how our story unfolds.

Drake also addresses comparisons made between he and another singing rapper Ja Rule. According to Drizzy, he sees himself as more closely related to 50 Cent than his former rival.

I see myself more as 50 than Ja, not from a street perspective, but from a hitmaking perspective. I have the “21 Questions” and “Started From the Bottom.” I’ve tapped into both markets, whereas when Ja would go the street route it would be seen as a reach because 50 kept attacking him. So he’d have to stay in that girl lane. I can really rap, so I would never let that happen.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Shaunie O'Neal's New Reality Show Gets Shut Down?

Shaquille O’Neal allegedly wasn’t having it when he heard that his ex-wife Shaunie had plans to launch a reality TV show with their five children. Shaq threatened to shut it down claiming they’d have a show “over his dead body,” but then Shaunie went to court today hoping that a judge would grant her an emergency order allowing her to shoot with her children.

The judge wasn’t amused either says The YBF. An LA judge rejected Shuanie’s bid for an emergency order allowing her to shoot a reality show with her, kids but there’s no word on what actions Shaq is trying to take to block the show all together.

Shaunie wanted to start filming her show entitled, The Shaunie Project, for Vh1 in January, but now it looks like that remains to be seen. The show is described as a Cosby-style reality show, which doesn’t sound so bad but Shaq’s concerns about his children appearing on TV are legit too.

I’m going to do some digging around about this. Stay tuned.

WTF News: 560-Pound Man Dies After Falling Out of a Chair

A 560-pound British man died earlier this year after developing complications from falling out of a chair, reports the Mirror. Samuel Cann, 35, had to quit his job at age 28 because he was becoming housebound due to his increasing size. Cann got more an more sedentary and lived on a bad diet but repeatedly refused medical treatment to deal with his weight.

“Me and Sam often used to have arguments because I always wanted to call for medical help for him. He was housebound so the doctors had to come to us, but he was reluctant to have medical treatment,” Cann’s widow, Jody, told the Mirror. “He was told he was the perfect candidate to have his stomach stapled but he refused to have the operation. He was a very stubborn man.”

Emergency crews were called after Cann slipped from his seat and couldn’t lift himself back up. Paramedics, who discovered pressure sores and ulcers on his body, took him to the hospital where he died from numerous complications six days later.

The cause of death determined to be sepsis due to infected ulcers and sores and obesity.

Doctors said had his weight been addressed effectively, the rest of his medical problems could have subsided.

Lil Boosie Gets A Release Date

(AllHipHop News) The rabid fans and supporters of Lil Boosie finally have what they have been publicly clamoring for – a release date.

Boosie is all set to come home on August 18, 2014, according to Nola.com.

The paper was jailed in 2009 for probation violation when he pleaded guilty to marijuana charges.

Some speculated that he would be headed home before the end of 2013, but those dates continuously came and left.

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections has listed the adjusted date as well.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Tionna Smalls Producing New Reality Show?

This rumor stems from a couple of years ago when Tionna Smalls held auditions for what she describes as “boss chicks,” for a reality show she was pitching to various networks. At that time, she was looking at various women in media who were either at the top or climbing to the top.

The show didn’t get picked up but then a few of the women being considered ended up on doing other things on TV including Bravo’s forthcoming show, Blood, Sweat and Heels. Even Smalls went on to have her own show on MTV (Girl Get Your Mind Right).

But the whispers have picked back up and they’re alleging that Smalls doesn’t give up easily and that she’s switching things up a bit to focus on some of Brooklyn’s “it girls” and/or socialites. It’s still a similar concept but since Brooklyn is hot right now I guess it would make sense to make it borough-specific.

Nothing is etched in stone just yet but stay tuned.
