Popular South African Rapper Mistakenly Shot By Police

(AllHipHop News) Award winning South African Hip Hop artist Khuli Chana was shot by local police in a Johannesburg suburb Monday morning after authorities mistook the performer for a kidnapping suspect. Chana, whose real name is Khulane Morule, stopped at a gas station to fill up his car before traveling to a performance in Pretoria. It just happens that the station he chose to use was the same one selected as the site for a ransom drop off.

Police on the scene were informed to look out for a grey BMW as the kidnapper’s car. Chana was driving a blue BMW at the time. After failing to stop at an unmarked police barricade, the rapper’s vehicle was hit when officers fired six “warning shots.” Chana was struck in the finger and back. The new father is currently recovering at home after being discharged from the hospital.

“The reality of the matter is this is police brutality,” said Refiloe Ramogase, Chana’s manager. “The police need to be more circumspect when they decide to use lethal force.”

The real kidnapper is reportedly in custody and the victim was released. The incident is under investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Chana took home three trophies at the South African Music Awards in May including Album of the Year for Lost in Time. It was the first time a Hip Hop artist won the coveted award in its 19 year history.

EXCLUSIVE: Freeway Ricky Ross Addresses Recent Drug Dealing Rappers Comments & Jay Z’s Barneys Statement

(AllHipHop News) Freeway Ricky Ross’ recent comments about Jay Z’s drug dealing past made headlines as a diss to the legendary emcee’s street credibility, but Ross reached out to AllHipHop to address what he felt many had missed in the message he was trying to convey.

[ALSO READ: Freeway Ricky Ross Details Autobiographical Book With Journalist Cathy Scott]

During a recent interview with The Murder Master Music Show Ross said, “I was just reading on the airplane the other day in Vanity Fair with Jay-Z in it talking about that he sold crack. I was just reading it and it was so corny. These dudes just don’t keep it 100.”

To clarify his point the former head of a $600 million drug empire wrote in a statement:

I feel like my Esquire story starts laying things out more honestly, than the Vanity Fair piece on Jay Z. The game is real, and you’ll lose more than you win. If you sell drugs there is no rap career waiting as an exit strategy, you will either go to jail for a long time or end up dead. The kids deserve to know that, so they realize there’s better options.

Ross also goes on to share his thoughts on Jay’s public statement concerning the Barneys New York racial profiling incidents:

I read the Jay Z comments on Barney’s asking why he’s being judged, you’re being judged because that’s what comes with basing your career off the D Boy game. The game is give and take with those around you. It’s not enough to comment about Barney’s profiling when you sell products to the people possibly targeted. People that look like people you grew up with, and that are in your family. We know the reality of this country in regard to race. You stand up for them immediately when it comes to something as sensitive as racial profiling. You have to have context of American history that this profiling is happening and be honest, and demand the people you partner with to be of the type that treat your people fairly.  This is the big problem of the high-end luxury these rappers talk about and have our children hooked on for status. They are not in our interest as a community, and often as seen in the profiling case they look down upon us as customers. As I said in my Hip Hop Can Heal piece on Huffington Post:

“At my height I did not make hundreds of millions to belittle those around me, this is what elitism has driven rap into becoming. A tool to marginalize the have-nots as rappers say what they invented, how they will protect it and how your less than for not being in the same class. The goal cannot be to have large sums of money to marginalize your fans with diamonds they don’t have, clothes they can’t afford or cars they have not seen.”

Kanye West Speaks On Barneys Controversy During Concert (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) The ever outspoken Kanye West has weighed in on the recent racial profiling allegations leveled at luxury designer store Barneys New York in his own way. While performing during his Yeezus Tour stop in Las Vegas, Kanye went on one of his infamous rants. This time the Chicago rapper/producer focused his verbal wrath at what he sees as the hypocrisy and racism of the fashion and entertainment industries.

During his speech Kanye referred to the cases of Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips. The two Barneys customers were stopped by police and accused of using fraudulent credit cards to purchases items from the store. West tied the incidents in with lines from his song “New Slaves”:

That’s that broke n*gga racism. Don’t touch anything in the store. Excuse me that’s that, “can I help you sir?” That’s that racial profiling out in front of Barneys and sh*t. Talking about, “did you steal that?” And it’s that rich n*gga racism, that’s come in… come in Ye please buy more, please buy more… I know you just got some money and can’t wait to spend it n*gga.

Street wear designer Derick Bowers also used “New Slaves” as inspiration to start a petition to get Kanye’s frequent collaborator Jay Z to cut ties with Barneys.

“Just piggy backing off what Kanye [West] said in his song ‘New Slaves.’ Lines in that song were a direct correlation to what’s happening right now,” Bowers told AllHipHop. “Either you’re too broke to go in the store according to them, or if you got money we’re going to use you, and that’s Jay Z. I just hope he sees that.”

Jay Z released a statement addressing calls for him to sever his business relationship with Barneys on his Life + Times website saying he is “waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys” to comment on the situation. The Brooklyn legend did receive support from Rev. Al Sharpton who believes the focus needs to be on Barneys first and not Jay Z.

Hip-Hip Rumors: Why Did Wale Delete His Twitter?

Wale has deleted his Twitter again and this time, the rumors have started to run wild. Well, not so wild. Most of the speculation centers around this new song by a former friend of Wale that reveals some of the inner workings of their early relationship.  The man’s name is Southeast Slim and he was down with Wale before he took the industry by storm.

Hip-Hip Rumors: Rihanna Bending Dudes Over?

Sheesh…the internet rumors can be a trip and merciless. Rumor on the block is that Rihanna is taking her freak side to a new level. Oddly, this rumor comes as Rihanna was taking images outside a mosque. There goes that religious revival. The word on the block is that RiRi has adopted a strap-on and has used it on some dude in the fashion industry. I’m not sure if that makes her gay or him or some mutant form of it, but it definitely makes them freaks. At first, it was a rumor that she had done this sort of mess with Chris Brown or Drake, but that notion was quickly dispelled. And, that’s not a rumor I would wish on my favorite enemy. Shout out to Chris Brown. I suspect he’s the dude that Micheal Jackson wanted to be: Bad and Dangerous.

Jay Z Receives Support From Al Sharpton In Barney’s Profiling Case

(AllHipHop News) Jay Z has been catching a heavy dose of heat from those that feel he needs to kill a highly publicized business deal with Barney’s, the high end retail store accused of racial profiling.
However, the rapper mogul received support from Rev. Al Sharpton, who said that Jay’s critics are looking at the wrong target.
“Some people want to make this about Jay-Z,” Sharpton said. “No, this is about Barneys first.”

Sharpton made the comments at the National Action Network offices, according to a report from the New York Post.

The civil rights leader also said that Barney’s better come up with a plan for the alleged racist actions of the New York store. The store profiled and questioned pricey purchases of a pair of African American patrons. A boycott may result if a meeting between NAN and Barney’s doesn’t yield a satisfactory plan.

Jay Z maintained in a statement that the deal with Barney’s wasn’t lucrative an any way.

Exclusive: Tha Chill of Compton’s Most Wanted Checks In From Prison

Compton’s Most Wanted member and Co-Founder, Tha Chill (also known as MC Chill), made urban gossip headlines in early 2012 when it was reported that he was arrested on domestic abuse charges. One site even went as far as to describe it as him “beating his girlfriend half to death.” Recently, Chill reached out to AllHipHop.com from prison in Norco, CA to tell us his story of what really happened. Chill also updates us on why the 1st Generation group was put on hold (and yes, it has to do with members going in and out of jail). Hopefully everybody can get out and stay out because that would be a nice album project of West Coast legends and veterans. The Compton rapper also released a new album on iTunes in September called Chillstrumentals, a mixture of unreleased songs and instrumentals from his catalogue. Stay up, Chill.

AllHipHop.com: How did you really end up in the Norco CRC Prison?

Tha Chill: There’s been a bunch of rumors and all types of sh*t said about what happened, saying that I beat my b*tch up and all types of crazy sh*t. I’m in here for a simple probation violation. I was on five year suspended sentence probation. Me and my b*tch were arguing and the neighbor called the cops and I was arrested two months later because I had come in contact with the police. I was at the house chilling and they arrested me. I was thinking that I was going to get right out but I violated my probation. In California if you are on probation and you come in to contact with the Police, that’s a violation of your probation. I have to finish my suspended sentence but they are only having me do eighty percent of it.

AllHipHop.com: I had read reports on various gossip sites that you had beat up your girlfriend.

Tha Chill: It was a simple argument. The neighbors called the cops and we were in the front yard talking sh*t. My girl didn’t call the Police on me – it was the neighbors. We didn’t even know that they had called the Police – we left. I didn’t know any of this until two months later. The cops showed up at my doorstep with a felony warrant and I’m like, “For what?” They told me that it was because the cops were called on me and I was on suspended sentence probation.

AllHipHop.com: Man, they can take you in as easily as that?

Tha Chill: Yeah, it was something I learned. Instead of fighting it, and with my prior record, it was worth it to take the deal just to get it out of the way, so that’s what I’m doing now. I’m just sitting here and getting it over with so I can get out and not be on probation anymore.

AllHipHop.com: How much time have you officially served already?

Tha Chill: I’ve been down for two years and I’ve got one more to officially go. Time is ticking and I’m getting this sentence behind me. I miss my family, my kids and making my music.

AllHipHop.com: How are you holding up inside there?

Tha Chill: I’m in here doing my thing, with the whole Hub to Dub car (Compton & Watts). A lot of people recognize me but they know that I’m a street dude first before a rapper. Nobody’s trying to step to me or be on some bullsh*t. There be sh*t happening but I’m not involved in any of that sh*t.

AllHipHop.com: What’s your Prison day like?

Tha Chill: I wake up at 4 a.m. and do about a thousand push-ups, brush my teeth, take a shower, and shave my head. Go eat some food like oatmeal with an apple pie. I’ll go chill with the homies and see what’s up with them for a minute. I’ll watch some news, TMZ, and Wendy Williams. Then I’ll go work out some more and then work on my Compton’s Most Wanted book that I’m trying to put out. I’d love to make a movie about it when I get out. It’s the story of me and MC Eiht on our beginnings and how we got to this point. I think my story can encourage people whether they are in Prison or on the streets and help them to stay out of trouble and how the California system works.

AllHipHop.com: Are you able to make any kind of music at all in there? I’ve spoken to several artists who were incarcerated and some even had access to recording equipment.

Tha Chill: They have programs in Church. I play drums for a band. There are real talented people in here that unfortunately will never see the streets. We have fun together and I’ve learned a lot from these guys. There are drum machines and other instruments in here but you can’t just go get them whenever you want them.

AllHipHop.com: Your camp recently released a new album from you called Chillstrumentals that’s on iTunes.

Tha Chill: My partner has a lot of the music that I’ve made and he convinced me to not let it sit while I’m in here. We put together some stuff from my catalogue to make an album and secured distribution through Empire. I reached out to the people on my Facebook and asked for suggestions on a title and so many responded. One of them hit me on my inbox and suggested Chillstrumentals. I thought it was good idea to do something like Pete Rock and play a beat before a song comes on. I also put some cuts from my 1st Generation(includes Kurupt, Jayo Felony, King T, Sir Jinx, MC Eiht, DJ Battlecat, Gangsta) group on there to just let people know that we still plan on rocking together. We just all want to be present. I want people to hear my talents as a Producer. A lot of people think that I just rap. Then there are those that think that I just produce and don’t rap. Chillstrumentals is just a reminder to people while I’m away of what I can still do.

AllHipHop.com: I’m glad that 1st Generation is still in the plans because I honestly gave up on it.

Tha Chill: Nah, what happened was Gangsta (formerly of Tha Comrads) went to jail and we were waiting on him to get out. Then Jayo Felony went to jail too. It’s crazy because I’m trying to keep all of my homies out of jail and I end up here. We’ve got priors and that’s California for you. I spoke with the other members and we decided that we are still going to do it but we need everybody present for it.

Chris Brown Arrested For Assaulting A Man In D.C., Man Hospitalized

(AllHIpHop News) A strong nominee for “most typed sentence” in Hip Hop over the past year: Chris Brown has been arrested. TMZ reports that Brown was arrested for alleged felony assault outside of the W Hotel at 15th and K St earlier this morning (October 27).

According to the report, Brown got into an argument with a man and things escalated into a physical confrontation. The unidentified man was injured during the fight to the point of needing medical attention and is currently in a Washington, D.C. hospital.

Brown still has to comply with his probation for his assault of Rihanna four years ago which stipulates legal infractions could result in up to four years in prison. Brown recently avoided such a fate this past August after his hit and run case was dropped.

TMZ’s “law enforcement sources” detailed how the entire physical confrontation resulted over a poorly chosen photobomb by two men:

Two woman approached Brown in front of the W Hotel and asked to take a picture with him.  As the pic was about to be taken, 2 men rushed over to get in the photo.  We’re told Chris then said, “I’m not into this gay s**t, I’m into boxing,” and threw a punch at the alleged victim.  The fight was then taken to the ground.

Chris Brown is currently in custody.

Jay Z Responds To Barneys Controversy: Not Leaving ‘Till I Know The Facts

(AllHipHop News) After reports of two separate racial discrimination by two African American teens at Barneys’ flagship store in New York City, Jay Z seems to have more of a problem with the media than Barneys. In a statement posted on his personal website Life+Times, Jay Z denounced the negative criticism on his delayed response and addressed if he will stop his planned holiday collection with Barneys.

Jay reasons that he did not immediately respond to the October 22nd news of Trayon Christian’s alleged racial profiling at Barneys due to a lack of facts:

I move and speak based on facts and not emotion. I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys.

Jay Z not only is hesitant in removing his collection, he also equates him making a rush judgment of Barneys to racists profling people:

I am against discrimination of any kind, but if I make snap judgements, no matter who it’s towards, aren’t I committing the same sin as someone who profiles?

The majority of Jay’s statement revolves around clearing up misconceptions of his character and the nature of his deal with Barneys. Jay maintains that The Shawn Carter Foundation will receive “25% of all sales from the collaboration, 10% of all sales generated in the store on November 20th and an additional donation from Barneys.”

The collection will start being sold online and in stores on November 20th.

Check out the full statement at Life+Times.
