DJ Quik's Top 5 Hip Hop Moments From the 90s

Thanks to festivals like Coachella, SXSW and Paid Dues Hip-Hop legends are being instagramed into the timelines of a new generation of fans.

DJ Quik is one of the many respected artists taking it to the road. This month (April 19th & 20th) he kicks off the “Krush Groove” tour which also features Redman, Method Man, Bone Thugs and Harmony and more.

“Great moments make Hip-hop what it is,” says tour booking agent Jamie Adler. “Whether it’s an artist collabo, an onstage reconciliation or a diss, those moments are the exclamation points in the story of Hip-hop. DJ Quik is actually about to give us one of those moments on this tour so people better come with their camera phone’s ready.”

Knowing that DJ Quik is going to deliver it on stage, we asked what are some outstanding moments from his early days as an artist.

DJ Quik’s Top 5 hip hop moments from the 90s

#1 – I did a show with X-Clan who at the time were my favorite group and I was awe-struck. I was a big fan because they were like the Hip-hop Parlament and the Funkadelics, so I was blown away.

#2 – When my 1st album came out and the s### exploded! I had anxiety because of the success of it. I couldn’t believe it. For it being a mixtape, well you might as well call it a mix cassette, but Profile records put some money behind it and put me Michael Jackson’s studio and let me go hard. I ended up making a top 20 album that year. The whole gaze of that is high that’s better than weed and alcohol mixed together, intoxicating. I got a little power drunk though.

# 3 – Working in the studio with Tupac after he got out of jail, that was really intense and it felt…if I could pick a word, there was a type of anticipation for the whole situation. Not just for the album we were working on (All Eyes On Me) but for where he was going at the time because it seems like he was trying to catch up on lost time from being in the pen so it was just a trip how fast we worked when we got in there because he was very driven that was very memorable.

#4 – It’s not so positive but it was when my nephew got strung out on crystal meth and shot my manager at my house. Trying to drive him to the hospital was life changing for me, I never really got comfortable after that in the industry, or around people. That was pretty traumatic.

#5 – Signing with Clive Davis. It was a little bittersweet with that monkey on my back because I had finally made it to the majors but constantly thinking about my friend who had helped me get there wasn’t there to share it with me. It’s a little melancholy but those are some of my  most memorable times.

(AllHipHop News) Outkast’s first performance together in over 6 years was met with same reaction the inital news of their reunion tour surfaced: skeptical zeal. Big Boi spoke with The Hollywood Reproter about finding artists on Shazam, cutting Outkast’s Coachella Performance and more.

According to one half of the duo speaking with , the group had five extra songs planned for their first performance at Coachella last Friday but were forced to cut the set short. Big Boi says that they may perform those songs during their upcoming shows:

What happened was our set got cut by like five songs. We had to cut ‘Player’s Ball’ and ‘Chronomentrophobia’ because of the time constraints. But there’s probably a couple songs [fans] didn’t hear then they’re gonna hear this time.

I’ve been asking [lead singer] Isaac [Brock] when they gonna do it, man,We’ve got these songs they’ve been sitting on forever. I saw him a couple months ago and they’re working on some additions to what we did. I don’t know. It’s a crazy camp over there. It’s coming. Talk to him! He’s the boss.

Whoopi Goldberg Writes About How She Replaced Advil With Marijuana To Treat Illness

(AllHipHop News) Whooppi Goldberg is one of the only people to have won a Grammy, Academy Award, Golden Globe, Emmy, Daytime Emmy and a Tony. You can now add marijuana columnist to her resume as Goldberg begun her writing gig at The Cannabist with a post on her love of medical marijuana.

Goldberg, whom suffers from glaucoma-induced headaches stated that she uses a vaporizer pen that she named “Sippy” to deal with her headaches. According to Goldberg, marijuana has worked better than the “man made things” she was taking before:

I used to take Advil by the handful for this very reason, and I don’t take Advil anymore — not for my eye. You’re not supposed to eat Advil every day, and I was eating them every day, these man-made things. But I can do this without hurting myself.

Goldberg maintains that she uses marijuana for strictly medicinal purposes and is “certainly not looking for that high high.” This is a mentality she developed over time as she revealed in 1992 that she smoked marijuana prior to her acceptance speech at the 1991 Oscars:

I learned a great lesson. Never smoke pot before there’s a possibility of having to talk to a hundred million people.

Hip Hop Rumors: Did Mike Epps Lay the Smackdown on His Rumored Jumpoff?

Mike Epps got some explaining to do…

Epps is being accused of punching a female fan in the face at the ‘Haunted House 2’ premiere party in Los Angeles, and while he and his camp are donning her as a fan who was too close for comfort while he was out with wifey, the woman whose name is Simone Shepard is singing a very different tale.

Simone-Shepherd-1

Shepard claims that she’s far from a groupie and was invited by Wayans to attend the after party. She also has done some ghost writing and says that she and Epps’ wife got in to a  heated spat which led to the events.

Mike supposedly stepped in to separate the two women and this is allegedly when he punched Shepherd in the face.

While 5-0 says she showed no sign of visible injury at the party, Simone says her face swelled up that night due to the impact from being rocked by Epps.

If Shepherd looks familiar thats because you probably recognize her from a few popular Vine videos.

RZA Addresses Wu Tang Clan Affiliate Cutting Off His Own Penis, For The First Time

(AllHipHop News) Wu Tang Clan news has been weird, sad and shocking this past week and former affiliate Andre Johnson cutting his penis off is emblematic of the whole week. A day after Raekwon’s critical statements about RZA, the Abbot speaks on Johnson’s self-inflicted ordeal for the first time.

According to RZA in an interview with XXL, Johnson (rap name: Christ Bearer) was apart of Wu Tang Clan-assoicated West Coast Killa Beez. However, RZA maintains that while he spoke to Johnson prior to his injury, RZA states that he had not made music with the rapper in over 10 years. RZA deduces that Johnson’s time spent in prison and apparently debilitating mental health played roles in his decision to harm his penis:

I thought he was a smarter guy than a guy who would do something crazy like that. But at the same time, he been in jail recently, he’s been in trouble. Maybe he’s mentally unstable. Maybe the mental health system should have took a look at him and said, ‘You know what? We got to hold on to this guy for a little longer.’ Because it’s not any sanity; even if you high, this s### don’t sound sane. This sounds more than high. It sound like mental problems or something that was bothering this man’s mind, and he needed help. It’s sad. I send my respect out to his family.

RZA also revealed that he signed Johnson and his rap partner, Meko as the group Northstar for $150,000. RZA also points out how the recent news is bad for Wu Tang Clan, press-wise:

It’s sad that it’s Wu-Tang affiliated. It’s like dirty press in a way. I want to know what the f### moved him to do those things.

RZA executive produced the group’s 2004 debut album Bobby Digital Presents…NorthStar through Wu Tang Records/Koch Records.

Suge Knight: Biggie Stole The Idea For "Get Money" From Tupac's Original "Hit 'Em Up" (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Quick history lesson: Tupac Shakur was shot and robbed on November 30th, 1994 at Quad Recording Studios. A little over a year and a half after, on June 4th, 1996, Tupac released the scathing diss record “Hit Em Up”, supposedly inspired by his belief that Biggie and Sean Combs set up the shooting. Today (April 18th), in an interview with BET, Suge Knight reveals that “Hit Em Up” was 1. an entirely different song and 2. became a diss song after Junior M.A.F.I.A. released “Get Money”.

Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s Conspiracy single “Get Money” was released on September 3rd, 1995, seven months before Tupac released “Hit Em Up”. According to Suge Knight, the Notorious B.I.G.’s then wife Faith Evans attended a studio session with Combs’ mother of his first child, Misa Hylton for the original version of “Hit Em Up” . He states that he believes it was Faith, and not Misa who leaked the information because he thinks he “made Misa feel a lot better than ‘Pac made Faith feel”:

I think it was Faith that went and told them that Pac was doing that track and he was putting some lyrics to it. So, before we can finish that track, they beat us to it and put out ‘Get Money’. But that was already pretty much what we were talking about on the track before the lyrics were even laid. So, when Faith whispered in they ear and came out with ‘Get Money’ before us, ‘Pac heard it on the radio, called me and was going crazy’.

Suge alleges that Pac believed it was infact Hylton who leaked the information to Combs and Biggie. After hearing “Get Money” on the radio, Knight alleges that ‘Pac immediately changed the original “Hit Em Up” and recorded the legendary diss song we know now.

Check out Suge explain how Pac’s “Hit Em Up” was changed to include lyrics that “would make a grown man cry” below:

YS – Down For The Team feat. Vega

“The buzz surrounding the quickly rising Floridian rapper “YS” continues to grow as he treats us with a new audio single “Down For The Team Ft. Vega”. This his his second release of his debut Album “Streets Of Rage”, set to drop in the early summer. Produced by Jeremiah Rivers of The Natural Born Hit Makers”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Was That Wu Dude On Drugs When He Cut His Junk Off?

I’m a pretty big Wu Tang fan and I never heard of Andre Johnson aka rapper Christ Bearer (until I saw that old Northstar album cover). Anyway, when dude cut his penis off, I thought it was the media just yanking some dude out and saying “Hey, he knows RZA.” So, that’s not exactly the case. So, Christ Bearer cut his penis off and then jumped out of a window in an apparent attempt to kill himself. I was like:

http://i.minus.com/iAVAnzdJjaY9a.gif

I hope the dude is OK. But, here’s the problem. They cannot reattach his “member.” I don’t get too many girls as it is, but I cannot imagine life without my lil guy. Sadly, Andre Johnson will have a very different life after he recovers.

But, here is the rumor. I am hearing he was possibly using Bath Salts. The person I spoke to said it probably was and my google search revealed that those Bath Salts (not epsom salt) causes “agitation, paranoia, hallucinations, chest pain, increased pulse, high blood pressure, and suicidal thinking/behavior.” Sounds about right. If he wasn’t on any drugs, lets hope he gets the right medical help to let him live a good life here on.

Oh snap. I was just googling for a pic and this came up in the search!

Are they disowning dude or is he a Wu faker? I don’t know, but I think RZA “discovered” him. I just found out about him this week!

“They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!” -illseed.

Beyonce Photo'ed In A Wedding Dress On Jay Z-Driven Motorcycle For Possible Music Video

(AllHipHop News) Days after rumors spread that Hip Hop’s first billionaire couple would be touring together this summer, the collaborative news heats up with recently released photo of the pair on a possible music video set.

According to Hip Hop N More, the photo was taken in the High Desert in Los Angeles. While there is no official word on what the photo is connected to, given the lyrics on their Magna Carta Holy Grail collaboration “Part II (On The Run)”, rumors have spread that that is in fact the music video being shot.

Not so coincidentally, a day before this photo surfaced The L.A. Times reported that sources informed them the collaborative tour will begin on June 13th in Atlanta and end on August 6th in San Francisco. Reportedly the tour will also stop at California’s Rose Bowl Stadium on August 3rd. If these dates are correct, the tentative Jay Z and Beyonce tour would end a day before Eminem and Rihanna’s The Monster tour begins on August 7th at the same Rose Bowl Stadium. Breeding Ground Pick: T.R.E.

Thanks to his supreme lyrical prowess, T.R.E. (Ruff Draffs/CKP) has already earned a groundswell of loyal core fans including Warren G. and Erick Sermon, as well as key collaborations alongside the likes of luminaries such as Tupac Shakur’s protégés The Outlawz, and hip-hop legends Scarface, Bun B and Redman to name a few. On his come up, T.R.E. has been able to stand out among his peers with his signature sarcastic gruff voice, absorbing narratives and nimbly doling out acidic rap lines. While some MCs have relied upon gimmicks to grab attention, T.R.E. prides himself on being authentic with every lyric.
