Macklemore Says He Would Not Be As Successful If He Were Black

(AllHipHop News) Whenever a white rapper reaches a certain level of success inevitably the question of whether he would have had the same career path if he were black comes up. The hot white rapper of the moment, Macklemore, decided to tackle that question head on in a new cover story for Rolling Stone magazine.

[ALSO READ: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ ‘Thrift Shop’ Breaks Chart Record]

The “Thrift Store” performer told the publication:

If you’re going to be a white dude and do this sh*t, I think you have to take some level of accountability… You have to acknowledge where the art came from, where it is today, how you’re benefiting from it. At the very least, just bringing up those points and acknowledging that, yes, I understand my privilege, I understand how it works for me in society, and how it works for me in 2013 with the success that The Heist has had… We made a great album, but I do think we have benefited from being white and the media grabbing on to something. A song like “Thrift Shop” was safe enough for the kids. It was like, “This is music that my mom likes and that I can like as a teenager,” and even though I’m cussing my ass off in the song, the fact that I’m a white guy, parents feel safe. They let their six-year-olds listen to it. I mean it’s just…it’s different. And would that success have been the same if I would have been a black dude? I think the answer is no.

Macklemore has been releasing music independently since 2000, but it wasn’t until his joint album The Heist with Ryan Lewis was released in 2012 that the Seattle-based rapper started climbing the charts with his #1 hit singles “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us”.

Macklemore is up for 6 awards at this weekend’s MTV VMA’s including best Hip Hop Video (“Can’t Hold Us”) and Video Of The Year (“Thrift Shop”).

EXCLUSIVE: Bizzy Bone Addresses Rumors of Drug Abuse & The Legacy Of Eazy E

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and after recent photos of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s Bizzy Bone surfaced online the story making the rounds was that the Cleveland native was on drugs or sick or both. According to Bizzy neither rumor is true.

[ALSO CHECK OUT: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony “Everything 100″]

“I’m perfectly healthy. Everything is lovely. I’m probably the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life,” says Bizzy. “It’s difficult when the camera’s on to try and turn on your best ‘picture face.’ You wanna be normal so much and you wanna give the realness to the people so much, so in the course of that you’re gonna catch some funny faces.”

There has been speculation that Bizzy’s recent weight lose was the result of a substance abuse problem, but the original member of Bone makes it clear that his drop in mass was from his own personal decision, and he is not currently involved in excessive drug use despite what some observers may draw from certain pics.

“A brother done lost 70, 80 pounds. I had to. I was too damn fat, and it was all from alcohol. As far as me drinking and things of that nature, I’ve gone out maybe six times in a year and six months. My fiance hated it every time. Never have I done anything else. No Mollies, none of that sh*t. No crack. No coke. The farthest I’ve ever been is opium back in my younger days,” explains Bizzy. “I’m not suppose to be cute all the g###### time. I’m a man, so sometimes you gonna catch me in my manly mode. It’s difficult to keep a model face and suck your teeth in and all that bullsh*t. I ain’t got time for that.”

For an entertainer, even the mention of hard drug abuse can negatively affect business relationships which is why Bizzy wanted to clear up the matter.

“I can’t walk into any business places that’s conducting distribution, marketing, promotions and them take me serious if I don’t answer these things,” says Bizzy. “So if I leave it out there and say I don’t care what anybody say about me it starts affecting my business. I have to say, ‘Nah, it nothing like that. I ain’t never done no sh*t like that’.”

Bizzy also made headlines recently when he spoke on how he felt that his mentor Eazy-E’s death from AIDS has prevented the former N.W.A. member from being held in the same esteem as other fallen entertainers.

[ALSO READ: Bone Thugs: Eazy-E Doesn’t Get Cred He Deserves Because Of Death From AIDS]

“It’s the energy that’s going around of what people consider violent and what people consider a tragedy, of what people consider a culprit and what people consider a victim. It’s so much about AIDS going on in people’s mind that it’s a touchy ass subject, so that’s why I think mostly it’s not really spoken about. It’s like let’s stay away from that,” says Bizzy. “The gunshots with Pac and B.I.G. and even Left Eye getting into the accident, our beloved sister Aaliyah, they can talk more about that more so than the AIDS issue. It’s just a crazy issue.”

Bizzy and the rest of Bone will do their part in honoring the legacy of Eazy at this year’s Rock The Bells Festival where the group will perform alongside a virtual Eazy-E. Bone will begin rehearsing with the hologram about two weeks before the traveling festival starts in San Bernardino, California on September 7.

“It’s going to be monumental. It’s a major thing for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony to bring Eazy to the table. It’s not enough exposure of Eazy E so every time we bring Eazy to the table it rejuvenates everything and makes all the old stuff new.”

New Anti-Stand Your Ground PSA Reenacts Trayvon Martin Killing

(AllHipHop News) The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence’s new public service announcement against the Stand Your Ground laws uses the tragic situation most associated with the controversial statutes to gather support for repeal of the laws. The 90-second clip features a reenactment of the night Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman and uses actual 911 audio from the incident.

[ALSO READ: NAACP Introduces “Trayvon’s Law” Legislative Response To Martin’s Killing]

The ad was produced by Floyd Russ and paid for by crowdfunded donations.

The CSGV issued a statement on its website about Stand Your Ground Laws that read in part:

With “Stand  Your Ground” (aka “Shoot First”) laws, the National Rifle Association (NRA) and its partners in the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) have turned 3,000 years of jurisprudence on its head. Now you can provoke a fight, and if losing that fight, kill the person you attacked.

The NRA’s laws represent a dangerous and unprecedented escalation in the use of force in the public space, allowing individuals to kill when they merely fear “great bodily harm” (i.e., a fistfight, shoving match, etc.).

Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Big Tigger Dating Rudy?

I don’t know if people really care about this, but hey…why not. Remember this cute face of Rudy from “The Cosby Show”?

Well, here Keisha Knight Pulliam is these days:

YEP! She’s all grow’d up! And guess who she was seen with at a recent basketball game in Atlanta? Big Tigger, the one-time host of Rap City. Now he is busting a move down there in Atlanta on the radio. According to TheYBF.com, the pair seem to be in a relationship. Here is what they are reporting:

 photo bigtiggerandkeshia_zps307b2488.jpg

Keshia Knight Pulliam may have a new boo on her hands.  TheYBF.com spotted her taking in an Atlanta Dream game with radio host Big Tigger.  And, they went back to her place…together….

These two may be “just friends” for now, but we wouldn’t surprised if their lil friendship blossomed into something more pretty soon.

Big Tigger recently moved to Atlanta to take over the Afternoon Drive slot on V-103.

And our spying eyes caught the two giggling and carrying on while taking in the Atlanta Dream WNBA game Sunday afternoon at Phillips Arena.  And while the Dream beat the Mystics, we spotted Keshia & Tigger sharing laughs between each other and snapping a few pics…separately….with fans.

We then spotted the two after their WNBA date outing in the lobby of The Atlantic…the luxury residential building where Keshia lives.  So either Tigger was just the consummate gentleman and made sure his “friend” got home safely.  Or, the two went a little further than the lobby…

Epic Win Of The Day: Man With 132-Pound Balls Gets Surgery!

We have been watching this poor soul suffer for a long, long time, (over 4 years) but Wesley Warren has finally found some relief. He’s gotten surgery to remove the massive s###### that have weighed him down for so very long. But, this ain’t really funny so don’t you dare laugh. I accidentally came across some of the pictures online and this ish is really nasty. Warren is p##### and he blames the American health care system for his  situation. Read below:

A 132-pound s###### was surgically removed from a Las Vegas man. Wesley Warren, age 49, lived with the deformity for over four years. Warren suffers from a rare condition called scrotal lymphedema.

The condition causes blockage in the s######’s lymphatic vessels. Scrotal lymphedema causes the testicles to gain up to three pounds of mass per month. Untreated, the s###### will continue to increase in size.132-Pound S######

As reported by CNN, Warren realized something was wrong in 2008. The initial symptoms were sharp pains and swelling of the s######. When the symptoms continued to get worse, Warren knew it was serious. The rare condition can be caused by either a parasitic infection or injury to the s######. Mose cases seen in the US are caused by trauma.

As reported by News 15, the most common symptom is swelling of the testicles. Unfortunately, men often ignore the symptoms until the s###### is severely swollen. Warren saw numerous specialists, and the news was frightening.

One specialist told him the removal would save his life, another said the surgery would kill him. One thing the doctors agreed on was the price. Surgery to remove the 132-pound s###### would cost several hundred thousand dollars.

Warren could not afford the surgery, and he feared for his life. He turned to an unlikely source for help. Wesley Warren Appearing on the Howard Stern radio show, Warren discussed his condition, and his lack of resources. Dr. Joel Gelman, with the University of California, Irvine, heard about Warren’s condition and offered the removal free of charge. Dr. Gelman said Warren’s case was the worst he had ever seen.

Despite the severity of the swelling, Gelman successfully removed the enlarged S######. Although several follow-up procedures will be needed to remove excess skin, Warren is recovering well. Warren’s 132-pound s###### made it difficult to walk, or even move. He can now go for walks, and he has a bright outlook for the future.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Foxy Addresses Rumors Of Joining Wiz Khalifa

I don’t know what this chick is going to do, but Foxy Brown aka The Brown Fox seems to have enough relevance that the house that Wiz built is interested. On the flip side, she never mentioned them by name. So, check out the previous rumor I wrote for that, if you missed it.

RELATED: Hip-Hop Rumors: Will Foxy Brown Join Wiz Khalifa?

“There have been offers, of course. I’ve only been signed to one label my entire career, which is Def Jam. “My bar is set so high that any label that I go to now has to be an incredible situation for me — financially and spiritually. I’m on this whole maturation journey; I’m a different person. I just picked the mic back up,” she revealed. ” ‘Bandz Up’ was the first record that I did.” – MTV

Now, Foxy is working on a new album called, Bandz Up. I don’t know if she’s still on Def Jam at all, but I suggest she run with that deal with Wiz even if its a 360 Raping You Records situation. Lemons become lemonade these days!

Zulu Nation Says DJ Kool Herc Did Not Start Hip Hop And Is Misrepresenting The Culture

(AllHipHop News) There has been a lot of fanfare over the past week in celebration of what has been reported as the 40th anniversary of the birth of Hip Hop.

DJ Kool Herc is one originator that has become almost synonymous with the creation of the culture, but Quadeer “M.C. Spice” Shakur of the Universal Zulu Nation released a statement announcing that Hip Hop did not begin with Herc’s famous party at 1520 Sedgewick Avenue in the Bronx on August 11, 1973.

According to Shakur, Herc is a founding father of Hip-Hop, but he has been misrepresenting his role in the founding of Hip Hop on various news outlets.

The Zulu Nation Minister of Information also states that Kool Herc has asked his name not be included in any Zulu Nation Hip Hop Culture anniversary flyers several of years ago.

[ALSO READ: Afrika Bambaataa, Hip-Hop Community Celebrates The 38th Anniversary Of Hip-Hop, 39th Anniversary Of Zulu Nation]

In portions of his statement titled “MISREPRESENTATION OF A CULTURE BY A FOREFATHER”, Shakur writes:

Herc is our brother, but when our family strays from us, we must first forgive them for mistakes, but let them know of their wrongdoings, and of course, welcome them back with open arms. We could go on forever about how many artists who are heavily a part of, or were a part of the Universal Zulu Nation, know and understand how serious this is. By no means should ANY of us attempt to change the course of history and flip it for a dollar or for accolades from an industry of Culture Vultures called “the media”, when we have known and still do know that many in the media want the false, doctored-up UN-truths, not the REAL truth. Especially when it comes to Hip-Hop. What is further disturbing is the falsehood that Kool Herc failed to respect the TRUE first ladies of Hip-Hop: ShaRock, Lisa Lee, Debbie Dee, Queen Amber. The women who were there ON THE MIC representing this Culture. Kool Herc went as far as saying his SISTER is the “first lady of Hip-Hop”. Kool Herc’s sister is also his marketing rep, and is part of promoting the falsehood that she (Cindy) is the “First Lady” of Hip-Hop. That’s NOT TRUE.

Kool Herc, aka Clive Campbell DID NOT BIRTH HIP-HOP CULTURE 40 YEARS AGO ON AUGUST 11, 1973. In fact, Kool Herc only did a Back To School JAM in the recreation room at 1520 Sedgewick Avenue in the Bronx. No emcees were present, no “Hip-Hop” was present (a term heavily used by LoveBug Starski and Keith Cowboy), and the Zulu Nation was already in effect. THIS is the reason for this message. Please get a pen and write this down, or go stand near the chalkboard and write this one hundred times to make SURE you remember: HIP-HOP CULTURE IS 39 YEARS OLD…ZULU NATION IS 40 YEARS OLD.

Some may say there’s no difference, and it’s only a year. But truth is, Kool Herc appears to be working with outside forces to overstep and outshine what is taking place THIS November 12th: The 40th Anniversary of the Universal Zulu Nation. Do you know how big that really is? How dangerous that really is? That so many brothers and sisters of the same accord have been together THIS strong for THIS long?

To be forthcoming about the FACTS concerning this message, we MUST inform those who are a part of this Culture that Universal Zulu Nation does NOT condone falsehoods with respects to this Culture of ours. Kool Herc may have done PARTIES, but a PARTY does NOT represent a MOVEMENT. Nor does a PARTY CREATE a movement. But the CULTURE of Hip-Hop CREATED a MOVEMENT and REPRESENTS a movement. Zulu represents and always WILL represent the four spiritual PRINCIPLES of The Culture: Peace, Unity, Love and Having Fun. We also promoted and rocked parties UTILIZING the five physical ELEMENTS of the Culture: Deejaying, Graffitti, Breakdancing, Emceeing and KNOWLEDGE. I would hope that Herc would adhere to the KNOWLEDGE of our Culture and refrain form the misrepresentation and falsehoods. This message is to inform you that there is NO TRUTH to what you have been hearing about Kool Herc and Hip-Hop having a 40th anniversary. Maybe Kool HERC was deejaying for 40 years. Maybe so. But Kool Herc has nothing to do with the TERM “Hip-Hop”. It was a Culture he was INVITED to once our founder Afrika Bambaataa FOUNDED the Culture USING the term. That said, I would venture to say that perhaps Kool Herc’s SOUND system , “The Herculords” is 40 years old, but not Hip-Hop. Give it another year, Herc. And give it a rest. We love you, but we MUST correct you, brother. Happy 39th birthday, Hip-Hop. Happy 40th Birthday, Zulu Nation.

Earl Sweatshirt Delivers B+ Art Project: “Doris” Album Review

Earl Sweatshirt became an internet phenom then an exiled pseudo martyr for misunderstood kids and now an almost folk legend before releasing a proper debut album.  Doris is a sonically diverse ride through a precocious MC’s troubled mind. The album’s core idea can be summed up thusly: “I don’t give a f*ck what you think.”  A  seemingly abrasive stance, but this album delves into how that statement is inherently dependent on a conscious understanding of public perception while actively defying it.  A common paradox often faced by a Tumblr generation which thrives off of constant reaffirmation of one’s individuality through the validation of a niche crowd.

There is no conventional number one single (his manager said Earl consciously avoided those). He has another MC rap for over a a minute and 20 seconds (“Pre”) before we even hear Earl’s voice for the first time on the album. Earl even produces on the album but opts for the pseudonym “Ramdonblackdude”.  This is the artistically abrasive side to “I don’t give a f*ck what you think”.

Conceptually, Doris is divided into three parts which encompass Earl’s internal battle between self-fulfillment and public perception. The first six songs eases listeners into how weird Earl’s mind can get but framed in conventional manners. Every personal exposition of is life (used to lie and say he hate his absent father) is rapped with the same catatonic monotone flow as his most  menacing lyrics. He addresses this dichotomy on the chorus/interlude on the Neptunes-produced “Burgundy”:

“Hey Thebe, n*gga, what’s up n*gga? I heard you back, I need them raps, n*gga. I need the verse, I don’t care about what you going through or what you gotta do n*gga, I need bars, sixteen of ’em.”

This is the artistically self-conscious side of “I don’t a f*ck what you think.”

Once the album reaches its first major beat switch, on the Matt Martian, Chad Hugo and Earl Randomblackdude produced single “Chum” the topics, lyrics and production of the next five songs are noticeably darker. These songs are catered to the Odd Future superfans who immerse themselves in the eclectic range of artists under the Odd Future umbrella. The album takes a sudden shift to  rapping in slurred time measures with Mac Miller on the average “Guild”, misplacement of amateur-sounding meshing of sounds that is “523” and entertainingly useless Tyler, the Creator-assisted/produced “Sasquatch”. I would not be surprised if a number of Earl’s personal favorite songs from Doris appear in this section of the album.

The final four songs (“Molasses”, “Whoa”, “Hoarse” “Knight”) are Earl’s most Hip Hop purist appeasing section with Tyler, the Creator on “Whoa” stating they can “go back to that old f*ckin’ 2010 sh*t”(only three years ago). Leaving his most traditionally sounding Hip Hop songs for the end was conscious.

This is the culmination of “I don’t give a f*ck what you think”.

Earl is at an age where he would be entering his Sophomore year of college and probably taking social psychology courses while smoking on the quad. As an apparent student of the game who is conscious of so many factors let me give you  Earl Sweathshirt’s Doris Report Card:

Musicality : Earl really shows his ear for music is quite eclectic. Doris‘ production is the most diverse of any rap album released from the Odd Future collective. The album constantly changes moods and sound with only the gothic gloom and muddy bass-lines of tracks such as “Hive”, “Centurion” and “Chum” being the only commonality between the majority of the album. Sibling production duo Christian Rich are the standouts on an album that features production from RZA, The Neptunes and Matt Martian. The duo produced perfect soul sample “Knight”, “Centurion” and co-produced “Chum” and “Molasses”.

Overall: A

Lyricism (Writing Skills): Lyrics are either focused on being super technical or extremely self-conscious. Earl rhetorically asks fans if he’s “dispelling one-tick ponyness” (“Hive”) and even ends a verse because he knows “you tired with my rude a*s.”He also has never been a punchline heavy MC, opting for loose associations of concepts and mutlisyllabalic internal rhyming which is showcased on Doris heavily. As the son of poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, Earl exhibits expert ways of simultaneously appearing personal while still maintaining his wild character:

“‘Bout to catch a case again/eigths louder than the voice of Satan that be plaguing him.”

Earl is still evolving as an MC and getting over his biggest hurdle: words-connect flow. While this type of flow allows for dizzying displays of rhyming, Earl’s dense bar structure and aversion to conventional lyricism creates impressively rhymed verses that say absolutely nothing:

Gorgeous chrome-plated horse whip

Home-making paintings for poor quality p### flicks – From “Hoarse”

Overall: B-

Collaboration (Group Work): Earl plays very well with others. Unfortunately for Earl, the most impressive verses on his album come courtesy of Vince Staples’ extensive verse on “Hive” and Domo Genesis immaculately concise stream of though verse on album closer “Knight”. While overshadowing at times, his collaborators fit the concept of each record and even come out of their comfort zone in order to sustain this world Earl has created on Doris. The usually somber singing Frank Ocean even decides to give his vocal chords a much needed rest to spit a spoken word verse ripe with allusions to his altercation with Chris Brown in late January of this year (“Burgundy”).

Overall: B+

Doris is an entertainingly flawed depiction of a young MC trying to  “brush the dirt up off my psyche”. Earl Sweatshirt has officially entered himself into the conversation for best MC of Tumblr generation. The only question is will he ever give a f*ck to fully reach his potential.

ALBUM OVERALL GRADE: 7.5/10 (B+)

Doris is availbale now and can be purchased on iTunes Stream the album in its entirety below:

Hip-Hop Rumors: The Game Makes Big Statement With New Tattoo!

I don’t know where he put it, but The Game recently got a new tattoo of Trayvon Martin on him. The Compton rapper may be down with bodying a rapper, but he also cares about his fellow young man. So, basically, he’s paying homage to the slain youth with a permanent look on his body. That’s pretty cool even though I wouldn’t do such a thing. But, unlike me, Game is a father and I think that he’s got a special affinity for this because he does have sons. We should all care to unless you are George Zimmerman, who continues to ride dirty somewhere in America.

A$AP Rocky To Kendrick: You Smoking Crack If You Think You The King Of New York

(AllHipHop News) A$AP Rocky loves the competitive spirit his brethren Kendrick Lamar incited with his “Control” verse but does believe the West Coast MC was “crazy” for naming himself the King of New York.

In an interview with Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex, A$AP Rocky, one of the MC’s named in Kendrick’s “Control” verse, Rocky said Kendrick must be “smoking crack” in reference to his King of New York comment. While the Harlem MC was simply joking, he did believe it was good for Hip Hop:

Honestly, K. Dot and them ni**as, that’s fam. I think hip-hop needs this s###,” said Rocky. “It’s ni**as p##### off just because they wasn’t mentioned. I’m not justifying s###, rap is rap. The ni**a didn’t say nothing about nobody mother, he ain’t want problems. He said these is my ni**as and I’m lettin’ ya’ll know it’s competition. What’s the problem? That man know I’m where he at.

Rocky then admitted that he hardly listens to rap these days however he did like Joell Ortiz and B.O.B’s responses to Kendrick.

Flo Rida Defeats Lawsuit Because He Was Served On Facebook

(AllHipHop News) 2013 is definitely an evolution in technology. You can send a fax from your phone, order a baby online, they are even making hamburgers in laboratories. One thing you can not do is try to serve someone a lawsuit on Facebook, a lesson concert promoters Mothership Music should have known. According to Billboard, Flo Rida (Tramar Dillard) avoided paying $400,000 in damages to Mothership Music for not showing up to a 2011 performance in Australia.

After Flo Rida did not appear at his scheduled performance at the Fat As Butter fest in 2011, Mothership Music sued in the NSW District Court for breach of contract and damages. Due to travel constraints, Mothership Music resorted to serving Flo Rida a summons to his Facebook page.

Big mistake.

Flo Rida appealed Judge Judith Gibson’s initial ruling in Mothership Music’s favor and the ruling was subsequently upheld due to the promoter’s method of serving according to Justice Robert McFarlan:

The evidence did not establish, other than by mere assertion, that the Facebook page was in fact that of Flo Rida and did not prove that a posting on it was likely to come to his attention in a timely fashion

Trindad James To Joe Budden: “If You Don’t Like Me, Fight Me” (VIDEO)

This ain’t for bandwagon fans, sit ya a#### in the same spot/ Y’all the same n—as that made Trinidad James hot.”-Joe Budden

(AllHipHop News) Trinidad James’ first mixtape told the world Dont Be S.A.F.E. and now he’s telling his detractors don’t be stupid. In a recent interview, the All Gold Everything rapper responded to Joe Budden’s disparaging remarks in his “Lost Control” response to Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse.

James expressed no malice towards the New Jersey lyricist but did offer a physical way to remedy their differences:

It’s all love, I mean, I make music to answer a lot of those types of questions,” James said in an interview when asked about Budden’s lines. “I don’t consider it a diss. I’m from the streets so a n*gga talking is like a n*gga talking. A n*gga punching, you don’t like me, then you fight me. That’s why I make the songs to let you know, if you don’t like me, then you can fight me. I’m never going to diss you back, we gonna throw these hands back and forth. That’s all this is about.

Trinidad James will be taking his talents to the improv stage this Friday at Cipha Sounds’ weekly Hip Hop improv show Take It Personal. The show is every Friday, 9pm at the UCB Theater on East 3rd Street and Avenue A in New York City’s LES area.
