Militant Minded: Is Edutainment Still Needed?

“They schools don’t educate/ All they teach the people is lies” – “They Schools”, Dead Prez

It was a typical day in Mrs. Lefkowitz’s world history class. And, as usual, no one was paying attention. Of course, she didn’t mind as long as she was collecting a paycheck. So while the gangstas were fightin’ in the back of the classroom, and the kids on the front row were snoring like barn animals, she just kept on repeating the same lesson about the wonders of Greek civilization that she had been teaching for 20 years. That was until Tyrone Johnson, who had been listening to some ol school BDP on his iPhone, yelled out “in a school that’s ebony/ African history should be pumped up steadily!“ Although his classmates gave him a standing ovation, the otherwise mild-mannered Mrs. Leftkowitz became enraged, called for security, and had Tyrone thrown in jail for inciting a riot…

Since the creation of this country’s public educational system, the achievements of Europeans have been emphasized while the contributions of African people to civilization have either been downplayed or not mentioned at all. But for a brief period, Hip-Hop shook up the academic world and flipped the script with something that KRS-One coined “edutainment.”

Although the music of the conscious era of Hip-Hop (1988-92) was portrayed in the media as something that was gonna make young Black kids wage an armed insurrection against the government, the real threat of the music was that it made Black youth read and question authority, thus having the potential to disrupt the status quo.

Many of us from that era can attest to the fact that it wasn’t third period history class that taught us about Black culture, but the music of Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy, and Poor Righteous Teachers. The conscious movement was so powerful during that time, that it even spread into the universities and forced reluctant administrators to open the door for many African-centered scholars to drop some science on the students.

So the question today is, can edutainment still move the crowd?

While some may argue that the kids of today will not accept historical information in music, that is far from the truth. If rappers can name drop old school wrestlers like Ric Flair and ’70s sitcom characters like “Phil Drummond and ’em” from “Different Strokes”, then they should be able to drop historical facts in their lyrics as well.

Every school year, there are meetings being held in cities across the country about “the plight of African American students” and how to prevent Black students from dropping out of school. Most of the time, these meetings end with more questions than answers. Rarely, is the idea of a more African-centered curriculum given serious consideration nor is the idea of using Hip Hop to relay information.

Like most institutions in America, the educational system has been resistant to change. Teaching children that Christopher Columbus discovered America works for them.

But we must make it clear that it doesn’t work for us.

Also, while many instructors may criticize gangsta rap, they feel more comfortable with their students listening to Chief Keef instead of Immortal Technique. And reading street novels like Diary of a Broke Pimp instead of books that might put them on the hot seat such as Lies My Teacher Told Me by Dr. James Loewen or They Came Before Columbus by Dr. Ivan Van Sertima.

Maybe, there is a reason for this.

According to a recent CNN article, the U.S. Justice Department has accused the school system of Lauderdale County, Mississippi of operating a “school to prison pipeline,” for sending mostly African American and disabled children to jail for minor disciplinary infractions.

Apparently, Dead Prez was right when they claimed on “They Schools” that “the same people who control the school system, control the prison system.”

So, as we begin another school year, will it be business as usual or are we gonna put our heads together, and come up with workable solutions to solve the education dilemma facing the nation ?

Although some may blame the lack of Black men volunteering in the school system as the problem, historically, those who speak truth are not exactly welcomed with open arms. During the early ’90s, it was not unusual for Black leaders and scholars to be met by protesters when lecturing at colleges.

Today, Historically Black Colleges and Universities could play a major role in using Hip-Hop to teach African-centered courses, though, but instead of using their lyceum fees to bring in scholars and lectures, they’d rather blow the money on a Waka Flocka Flame Homecoming Show.

So, if we can’t depend on educational institutions , to whom do we turn for help?

We turn to ourselves.

According to Durham, North Carolina activist Tim Smith, we cannot depend on a school system where the main focus is to prepare children to pass a test at the end of the year to solve our problem. The solution must come from the community.

“You have to make children realize why education is important, “says Smith. “There’s nothing magic that needs to happen. It’s just hard work.” And some people are already doing it.

For example, Dr. Marc Imhotep Cray, a.k.a. The RBG Street Scholar, started the RBG Communiversity/RBG Street Scholars Think Tank in an effort to use the Internet as a way to bridge the gap between Hip-Hop and African culture.

With the technology at our fingertips, there is no reason why we cannot create our own methods of making sure our children know all there is to know, not only about Black history, but current events and how they are going to impact their lives.

One simple solution that I am going to implement is to send out daily #militantminded tweets with links to Afro-centric information. I suggest that others implement similar strategies.

As Public Enemy once had as its core mission to create 5000 Black leaders, our task today is to develop 5,000 street scholars.

Like J Ivy’s classic verse on Kanye West’s “Never Let Me Down”:

We are all here for a reason, on a particular path/You don’t need a curriculum to know that you’re part of the math.”

Cash Money Records CoFounder Ronald "Slim" Williams Pays For $7.15 Million Home – In Cash

(AllHipHop News) Cash Money Records cofounder Bryan “Baby” Williams is well-known for flaunting his wealth, but his older brother Ronald “Slim” Williams, the other founder of Cash Money, is much more low-key.

But that may be changing, as Ronald Williams recently purchased South Florida’s largest single–family house.

According to the Miami Herald, Slim purchased a 30,000 square-foot, 9 bedroom, 12–bathroom house, in South Florida’s triple gated community of Windmill Ranch.

A variety of rules were put in place to maintain the secrecy around the purchase of Slim’s new home, which was previously owned by Richard Nilson, the cofounder of Mattress Giant.

The house, which cost  $7.15 million, was purchased through a company called S Vision LLC.

It comes with amenities like an indoor tennis court, a wine room, a movie theater, a 6,000 square-foot multipurpose room and almost four acres of land.

And true to his record label’s name, Slim does not have a mortgage on the property– he paid for it in cash money.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Chris Tucker Shoots Down "Last Friday" Movie!

This is crazy. I don’t have a lot more to say that this: FREAKING CHRIS TUCKER DENIES THAT HE’S GOING TO BE IN THE NEW FRIDAY! We just had the exclusive confirmation that he WAS in it.

Exclusive: Ice Cube Has A New “Friday” With EVERYBODY! Yes, Chris Tucker!

Well, here is what he said to Tom Joyner.

“You know what? I don’t know. I talked to Ice Cube, because it’s such a big rumor and people get mad if you say you ain’t doing something so I’m real careful. Me and Cube, we’re talking about it and they’re working on a script. If it comes back, but I don’t think it’ll be as special as the first one.”

Chris knows he’s on that IRS list! Just do the damn movie! Nothing he has ever done is as special as Friday! So, lets make it happen!

Its doubtful and that’s in Chris Tucker’s words.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Trouble With Kanye And Kim?

The rumors are swirling around Kim and Kanye. There is alleged trouble on the horizon. I don’t know a lot about Kim K, but it seems like she dated one of the Jacksons named TJ Jackson. This young man was her first. TJ is the son of Tito Jackson, the bass player for the Jackson Five. Well, with all the drama surrounding the Jackson fam, is seems that Kim reached out to offer her support. No bueno. The National Enquirer, which is surprisingly on point these days, says KANYE WENT OFF. Here is what they said.
Now here’s Kicker No. 2: Kim phoned old friend/teen-throb TJ, now a married father of three, to tell him she’d help out any way she could with his “new kids” – but that touched off the hair-trigger temper of Special K’s thug/lover KANYE WEST, who fears his big-bootied cutie might rekindle the flames of hot teen love!

Revealed a close friend: “Kanye’s boiling! He told Kim to stay a million miles away from that crazy family, and not to get caught up in their drama – because he won’t stand for it! But his reaction’s made Kim apprehensive. Friends think that more and more, she sees that Kanye wants her at his constant beck and call – because he wants to shrink her life outside of their relationship!”

I don’t know how close they are to getting married, but Kim and Kris marriage will not be settled until next year so any hopes of KimYe tying the knock are going to be held off. They said Kim has already paid $250k to her lawyers already. Now, that s**t CRAY!

Hip-Hop Rumors: "The Real Husbands Of Hollywood" Skit Lands A TV Network Home

Last month, Nelly did an interview and said that the hilarious skit from the 2011 BET Awards, The Real Husbands of Hollywood was coming to a TV near you.

Well, Nelly ain’t never lie. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the skit has been reworked and will now be an improv show mixed with scripted material. The cast members for the show are confirmed as Kevin Hart, Nelly, Nick Cannon, Robin Thicke, Duane Martin, Boris Kodjoe, and Faizon Love. So what network has snagged the sure to be hit? None other than BET!

BET is making sure that the show will be a success and has wrangled famed director Stan Lathan to direct the project. I can’t wait to set my DVR for the show. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a riot.

In related news, Kelly Rowland has just landed a new pilot on BET. “What Would Dylan Do” (working title), will see Rowland play an L.A. based relationship blogger who lives with her best friend, Cherise (Gabrielle Dennis, The Game), and wealthy and divorced roommate, Brooke (Melanie Liburd, Strike Back).

It seems like BET is making major moves this year. Both of these shows sound like winners to me! Salute BET!

Illness Forces Nicki Minaj To Cancel V Festival Appearance; Doctors Order Rest

(AllHipHop News) Young Money rapper Nicki Minaj has canceled a headlining slot at the V Festival this weekend.

The rapper was supposed to perform at Weston Park in the UK today (August 18), but canceled the appearance after she fell ill, while boarding a flight to the United Kingdom yesterday (August 17).

A spokesperson said that Nicki Minaj’s entourage had arrived in the UK, but the rapper was too sick to board her flight for the performance.

“As the artist herself boarded her flight from New York on Friday, she felt unwell again. This is despite having thought she had overcome her vocal cord issues from earlier in the week,” a V Festival representative said in a statement.

Nicki Minaj has been ordered to rest for at least a week, in order to recover.

Other acts still performing at the V Festival this weekend includes The Killers, The Ting Tings, Tinie Tempah, LMFAO, Rita Ora, Childish Gambino, Nneka and dozens of others.

Sunset Strip Music Festival, Marilyn Manson and Tech N9ne Pay Tribute to Hip-Hop's Rocker Sample Kings – The Doors

On Thursday night, AllHipHop.com had the distinguished privilege of seeing the remaining members of one of music’s greatest bands ever come together for a tribute show that will likely never be duplicated. The Doors – performing right on Sunset Strip in Hollywood at the House of Blues, just blocks and walking distance from the Whiskey a Go Go, the Roxy and other venues where the iconic group used to tear up the strip.

With blues and 1968’s Summer of Love in the air, Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger brought back some of The Doors greatest hits with a some help from Franky Perez, Billy Morrison, Matt Sorum (ex-Guns n’ Roses), Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray), Emily Armstrong and Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes).

Marilyn Manson

With Jack Daniels on deck as part of an open bar until 9 p.m., the venue had a filthy odor of Sex, Drugs and Rock n’ Roll. What else do you really want in all reality? Rock DJ Jim Ladd introduced a host of guests to speak on the legacy of The Doors including Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman, Marilyn Manson, Roxy Theater owner, Nic Adler, and Whiskey A Go Go owner Mikael Maglieri, who gave Krieger and Manzarek the Elmer Valentine Award. The day was also declared “The Doors Day” by the mayor of West Hollywood.

While you may wonder how this is important to Hip-Hop, you should take note that a host of Hip-Hop acts have sampled The Doors over the years. Jay-Z sampled the track “Five to One” as he dissed Nas and Prodigy on the Blueprint album. There are plenty of other songs as well, like when Snoop Lion (then Snoop Dogg) sampled “Riders on the Storm.”

Tech N9ne has even given his props to The Doors, and recorded a song with them – here’s what he had to say about their music and the late Jim Morrison in an interview with the Village Voice, as he describes how he came up with the name of his label Strange Music based on a few of The Doors songs:

“I’ve been a fan since I don’t know how long ago. I never knew that I’d get to work with them. I was inspired by Jim’s words on “Strange Days” and “People Are Strange,” so I named my label Strange Music.

“Jim Morrison is a rebel. Keep in mind that he died when I was born, ’71, so I got his music later in my life, from DJs I lived with when I was 19 and stuff like that. I’m 40 years old now. Songs like “Five to One”, “Love Me Two Times”, “The End” – just the rebel of his mind. He was a poet, he didn’t care what people thought. That was so me. I’m just free with myself. I give all of me and that’s what I felt through their music.

“In 2010, when I was first called to Paris to do a show, I discovered Père Lachaise [Cemetery] was there. We went and found his gravesite, and we drank with him. I told him, “Thanks for the inspiration. Because Strange Music saved my life. I had no idea what I was going to do. I was going to be a psychiatrist, but I left school in my 12th grade year, on the honor roll.”
