Dr. Dre Teams With Hewlett-Packard To Improve Sound

Dr. Dre is part of an ambitious plan being launched by Hewlett-Packard and Interscope CEO Jimmy Iovine, to improve the sound quality of digital music.

Under the new agreement, Hewlett-Packard’s laptops and headsets will feature the Beats by Dr. Dre software starting this Fall according to CNET.

“We have to fix the entire chain,” Iovine told CNET. “Our position is to go to all the sources and try to improve sound and educate people. We can’t put anything weak in the line. Whoever puts out things that sound bad shouldn’t be as cool as something that sounds great.”

The goal is to improve the quality of digital sound files. Last year, Dr. Dre and Iovine teamed with Monster Cable and released their Beats By Dr. Dre headphones in a first attempt to address the issues with digital files.

Celebrities like LeBron James, Snoop Dogg and Kobe Bryant have been seen wearing the high-end headphones, which retail for around $300 dollars.

“I just want our product to sound better,” Iovine said. “The record business committed many, many mistakes in the last 10 years, and I’m right in there. One of them was letting its product get degraded. It’s one thing to let it get stolen, it’s another to allow it to be degraded because then you really don’t have a chance…video games and TV quality are getting better and the quality of our work is getting lower. If that happens, then music will become disposable. That’s something we can fix.”

The news comes as Dr. Dre puts the finishing touches on his long-awaited album, Detox, which is scheduled to hit stores sometime this year.

Vibe Magazine Purchased, Website to be Re-launched

The Vibe brand may be in store for a resurrection, as InterMedia Partners have confirmed their purchase of the defunct company’s assets.

Vibe, which was founded by legend Quincy Jones and Time Warner in 1993, had been a staple brand in urban culture until the changing market forced them to shut down the magazine and website in June.

With the name recognition for Vibe still strong, InterMedia Partners and its portfolio company Uptown Media Group are banking that a strategic re-launch will bring the brand back to its former 90s prominence.

“Vibe is the preeminent brand in R&B and Hip-Hop. We feel privileged to purchase and resurrect such a storied brand,” explained David Koff, a Senior Partner at InterMedia Partners. “Together with the re-launch of Soul Train this fall and the rapid expansion of Uptown Magazine, a reinvigorated Vibe enables us to serve a broad spectrum of the African American audience with high quality entertainment and information.”

The new focus for Vibe will be cultivating a “Vibe Lifestyle Network” which will include various other websites to crossover sponsorship and ad sale opportunities.

This task is in conjunction with Blackrock Digital, which handled the digital sales for Vibe before the June closing.

“Creating a preeminent lifestyle network anchored by two meaningful brands in the urban space is a fantastic opportunity that we had to get involved with,” Blackrock Digital president Chris Smith told AllHipHop.com. “Vibe.com has been a top performing web property for so many established advertisers, and we look forward to bringing that back to life along with key partner affiliate websites.”

The new team responsible for Vibe’s vision will be Brett Wright (Uptown Magazine Co-Founder), Chris Smith (Blackrock Digital President), Parker McNaughton (Blackrock Digital), and original 1993 Vibe team members Robert Miller and Leonard Burnett.

Vibe.com is set to officially re-launch in November or December 2009.

In 2010, the company will devote fewer resources to print issues, and follow a quarterly format for releases.

At press time, the terms for Vibe’s asset purchase have not been disclosed.

Hillary Clinton Will Beat You Down

I’ve watched the video of Hillary Clinton spazzing out on that poor Congolese college student at least 10 times and each time it gets me hype. She was in the Congo to speak on behalf of women’s rights specifically the epidemic of Congolese women and girls being raped and used as weapons of war. During a stop on her tour, she took questions at a town hall-style meeting on Monday.

One male student made the mistake of asking the Secretary of State: “Mrs. Clinton, we’ve all heard about the Chinese contracts in [The Congo]… What does Mr. Clinton think through the mouth of Mrs. Clinton…Thank you very much.”

For a split second I could see the sista in her, I think there’s even a visible neck roll and if you look closely I’ve been told you can see her lips mouth “B***h, please!”

Her reaction is priceless.

Once she took her headphones out I knew it was a wrap!

Later, Congolese officials tried to say that the student meant to ask about President Obama and not Bill Clinton. If that’s true, that’s what I call a Freudian slip.

The world may love Prez Obama, but they are still very emotionally attached to Big Bill. His show stealing release of Euna Lee and Laura Ling from North Korea further cemented his legacy. Sure, the White House says they didn’t send him (yeah right), stating he acted on a personal mission. However, let’s not overlook the fact that North Korea requested Bill Clinton knowing that his presence would garner them a world stage. The man’s been out of office for nearly a decade and is still in hot demand.

All of this makes Hillary one p##### off woman. She had to put the muzzle on him during her presidential campaign because he was coming out of pocket and stealing her shine. Now, she is the Secretary of the State and is still being asked questions about her husband.

Hillary should have jumped into the audience and beat the crap out that college kid.

“Don’t you know who the eff I am? I’m Hillary M####-effing Clinton. I run this show. Bill is my b***h. Now, ask your question again.”

Behind the matronly headbands, knee length skirts and pearls she uncomfortably wore during her time as First Lady, I always knew that Hillary Clinton was a spitfire. I would have paid anything to see the smack down she delivered to Bill after his cigar antics were revealed with Monica Lewinsky. You can’t tell me she didn’t hit him with a one-two combo.

During her run for President, a major complaint from voters was that she wasn’t likeable. She wasn’t soft and pink. Sure she was a bit of an ice queen but that’s OK. After seeing her snap on ol’boy, I like her even more now.

If she was to become our President we’d need the Hillary that was about to break some necks in the Congo to prove to the world that she deserved to be in the White House and needed to be taken seriously.

Hillary Clinton is strong, damn it! She’s a beast.

I’m so in awe of angry Hillary that I think she deserves her own theme song.

Just change “Papa” to “Hilly” and “Man” to “Woman”.

AllHipHop ChartWatch: Slaughterhouse Takes On Michael Jackson!

Smiling from Heaven?

Welcome back to ChartWatch where we count down the weeks top ten. It looks like it’s going to be another slow week for Hip Hop. Even though Fabolous’ fifth studio album Loso’s Way took the number two spot last week, it drops this week to number thirteen. The Brooklyn MC is replaced by Sugarland’s Live On The Inside. Michael Jackson continues to dominate the world of music and holds the first, third, and fourth spot with Number One’s, The Essential Michael Jackson, and Thriller.

Country music group Gloriana enters the charts at number five with their self-titled debut album followed by the latest in the compilation collection, Now 31, and Kings of Leon’s Only By The Night.

That brings us to a group that has been able to maintain its sales despite the slow music market. The Black Eyed Peas sell 44,000 units and claim the number eight spot. There must be something about “Boom Boom Pow” because this group has been moving up and down the top ten since their album debut a couple of months ago.

Another artist that continues to stay on the charts is Maxwell. The singer moves another 43,000 copies of his latest disc, BLACKsummers’ Night, to take the number nine spot.

Rounding out the top ten is American Idol alum Daughtry with his latest effort, Leave This Town. That’s a pretty dismal showing for Hip-Hop but things might be looking up for next week.

Dropping This Week

Things are looking up because Hip Hop supergroup Slaughterhouse is finally releasing their album. Crooked I, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9”, and Joel Ortiz drop their album on the heels of the Budden/Raekwon feud. Granted, at this point it is pretty ridiculous for two grown men to be fighting over a chart printed in Vibe Magazine, but hopefully all the fuss will bring attention to this album and Raekwon’s Only Built for Cuban Linx II. Hopefully it doesn’t overshadow the fact that four critically acclaimed lyricists have gotten together and put out a pretty solid album. If you get a chance pick this one up.

Next up, Westcoast rapper Brotha Lynch Hung and C.O.S team up for the third time and release Suspicion Vol. 2. The independent rapper has put out a countless number of albums and mixtapes which has gotten him a pretty strong fan base. If you’re a fan of artists like Tech 9ine (who owns the label Strange Music to which Brotha Lynch Hung recently signed) then you might want to pick up this album.

Well that was the amazingly short ChartWatch for this week. Hopefully some good albums will drop next week and more Hip Hop can make it on the top ten.

Cash Money Records Adds Indian Artist Jay Sean to Artist Roster

The musical landscape for Cash Money Records just got more diverse with the addition of U.K. Indian pop star Jay Sean.

The U.K. based Indian pop star is currently riding a wave of momentum with his Lil Wayne assisted hit “Down.”

According to the label’s co-founder, Ronald “Slim” Williams, the eclectic line up of talent falls in line with its goal of shining an international spotlight on his label.

“It has been our goal from the beginning to move from a small, local, independent label into a world-wide major entertainment organization, and I think, with artists like Jay Sean and Drake added to Lil Wayne, we have done just that,” Williams told AllHipHop.com in a statement.

Jay Sean’s single currently sits at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 after rising from the No. 63 spot.

The addition of Jay Sean serves as an expansion of Cash Money’ recent string of success.

The New Orleans-based label, which recently marked the 10th anniversary of its deal with Universal Music Group, continues to reap the benefits of Lil Wayne’s Grammy-winning album, Tha Carter III, as well its first rock signee, Kevin Rudolf.

Lil Wayne has ventured beyond the mic to establish his Young Money imprint with the signing of Canadian rapper/actor Drake.

The entertainer’s popular hit “Best I Ever Had,” occupies the No. 2 position on the Hot 100. Top 25 singles on the charts from Drake, Jay Sean, Bird Man and Young Money embody a string of good fortune for Cash Money.

Signing with Cash Money opens a new chapter for Jay Sean, who began performing at the age of 11.

The pop star, whose U.K. hits include “Eyes on You” and “Stolen,” achieved multi-platinum success in India, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Bulgaria after appearing in the 2005 Bollywood film, Kya Kook Hain Hum.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Another Rapper Jailed! Bey Playing Gay? Nas New CD!

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

THE DAILY TWO SENSE

PLEASE READ!

Please read my editorial. “Hip-Hop Needs Another Death”

BEYONCE: PLAYING GAY?

There has been a long-running rumor that Beyonce is going to be playing a gay singer in a movie that would co-star Eva Longoria. Well, those rumors came and left like so many other rumors. Now it is back. Apparently, Beyonce is going to be in a movie called “Tipping The Velvet” where she will portray Kitty Butler, a lesbian. The book of the same name came out in the 1800’s and it looks like the bizzarro Brokeback. What is ill is they say that Beyonce and Eva will DEFINITELY have a sex scene. I wonder how Jay-Z will feel about that. Ahhhh…I think its cool. LOL…as if ANYBODY cares what I think.

JAY-Z HITTING WOMAN?

You know…some rumors die harder than Bruce Willis. I’ll never forget when AllHipHop.com was about the only place to go to address rumors. We really pioneered this space, for what that is worth. This video leaked to the internet about four years ago:

Upon sight, it looks like Jay-Z is striking a women. The rumor has taken on several stories. One of the most prevailing one is that Jay-Z is hitting a woman from Africa. Four years ago, AllHipHop destroy this rumor. This footage is from the money “Backstage,” where Roc-A-Fella gives people a look at life on tour. The person Jay is playing with is a longtime friend from BK. Back in the day, we named her name, but she is a private person uninterested in that “fame.” The chapter of the film at that point was the crew was cracking up over being on tour for too long…I mean that’s it. Jay is not a hypocrite as it pertains to hitting women.

NAS IS COMING, NAS IS COMING!

I don’t know a lot of the details, but Nas is releasing another album late in the fourth quarter through Def Jam. I wonder what is going to become of that album that he was doing with the Marley member? I don’t know, but from what I understand, this is a solo album from Nas. Thoughts?

I could be wrong. Peep this recent video.

JAY ROCK IS NOT GAY!

Jay Rock got into a n argument on Twitter with a fan or hater that decided to start a rumor that Jay Rock is a fake thug with a belly button ring. He and Jay rock went back and forth on this matter for several “tweets” and ended up proving his point. I just find it incredible that rappers are giving energy to stuff like this.

BOW WOW IS LOSING IT!!

I respect Bow Weezy for what he has done thus far in the rap game, but this is just absurd. He needs to do like Charles Hamilton and go away. When, CH comes back he’ll be cool. Same with Bow Wow…just take a break and enjoy life.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

There is a good rumor coming down the line for the people in NYC. I am hearing that Salt N Pepa are coming to WBLS to replace Wendy Williams. Shout out to Gyant!

I am hearing that Nicki Minaj and Amber are getting rather chummy. At a recent tour stop, Amber was there backstage…chillin…just chillin…

What has Buffy The Body been up to? I miss her.

Vibe magazine found a buyer and will be coming back soon! Gnarly dude!

Shout out to Teddy Pendegrass. Get better dude!

RANDOM QUOTES

DJ Kay Slay checked in with the On-Air Idiots and he said Game needs to show Jay-Z a lil more respect. That’s interesting since Jay and Slay have had quite a bit of beef through the years.

“I respect the Game, like he’s a real good friend of mine and me and Jay-Z never really seen eye-to-eye, but what I am gonna say is I think Jay-Z deserves a little more respect for as long as he’s been in the game. And Game, he [should] just chill for a second. I really don’t think he fired at him hard enough for him to be going as hard as he’s going but then again, Game is a man. He’s gonna do what he’s gotta do. But me, I just think that, you gotta be on that individual level to go at him. And I don’t think Game has reached that yet.”

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!

These kids are crazy! I mean, CRAZY! The sad thing is, when you are 13 you cannot conceive the rest of your life in jail. In Milwaukee, there is a 13-year-old girl that stabbed her grandmother’s husband. That’s crazy, but what is crazier is how brazenly gully she is about it. “I stabbed him. I cut his throat. I’m not afraid to go to jail for this,” she said to witnesses. So, why did she stab him? Did he rape her? Was he abusing her lil’ brother? No, the husband of her Grandmother poured milk down the sink. He tossed the same milk that the kid wanted to use for her cereal. Suddenly, 41-year-old Robert Moon was stabbed in the throat…for discarding some milk that was probably old, used or sour. The teen now faces 60 years in prison for first-degree reckless homicide.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY

This girl is really funny on the net. So, I am not sure if this was supposed to be a joke or a real attempt at singing. If it was, it’s the EFOTD. If not, she is one funny chick!

YOLA DA GREAT…OFF TO JAIL?

I really don’t know a lot about Yola Da Great. All I really know is that he got shot in the face once back in the day. Now, I am being told that Yola was actually sentenced to five years in jail for committing some crime. I don’t know the crime, I just know the time. I guess…that’s it. Moving on.

SHOUT OUT TO K-RINO!

Here is a legend for ya tailbone. K-Rino! One of my Twitter fam requestied this so here it is.

Footage Fa Dayz – The Beastie Boys – 1998

Since today (August 11) is considered to be the birthday of Hip-Hop by many, it is only fitting that this week’s Footage Fa Dayz features pioneering rap group The Beastie Boys.

This footage was shot in 1998, backstage at The Continental Arena in New Jersey. On the bill that evening was Rage Against the Machine, Chuck D., Black Star featuring Mos Def and Talib Kweli and of course, The Beastie Boys.

The Beasties were backstage playing a pickup game of 3 on 3 basketball just before they took to the stage. Adam “Ad Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D.” Diamond breakdown the group’s origin, including how they came up with the name “Beastie Boys” in this rare clip of the group.

“It was probably like the stupidest thing we could think of at the moment. We met going to shows and going out to hear music at a young, impressionable age,” Mike D. said, revealing that the group started around 1981-83, as Hip-Hop started coming to downtown Manhattan.

Additionally, Ad Rock drops a bomb, revealing that he was instrumental in bringing a young, unsigned LL Cool J to Def Jam. “I made the beat for [LL Cool J‘s] ‘I Need a Beat’,” Ad Rock revealed.

The guys state that in the early days, they marketed themselves using the emerging medium of video, in addition to 12 inch singles, although the music was most important factor for fans at the time.

Mike D. also speaks about their split with Def Jam, although it’s obvious it’s a touchy subject for the band.

“We couldn’t work it out with them,” Mike D. said. “But everyone has their own story. Success to them and L and everyone doing their own thing. A lot of times when money gets involved, things get funny.”

It’s amazing to see that eleven years later, the Beastie Boys still function as a cohesive unit, delivering ground breaking material (like Awesome: I Shot That) to the forefront.

Millions of fans around the world are awaiting group member Adam “MCA” Yauch’s recovery from cancer treatment, which he will undergo in the coming weeks.

The group has postponed the release of their upcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1. while MCA recovers.

Get well soon MCA, from AllHipHop.com

Raekwon Camp Issues Statement Regarding Joe Budden

A representative for Raekwon issued a statement this afternoon (August 11) refuting all reports that the Wu-Tang rapper has spoken about Saturday’s (August 8) altercation with Joe Budden.

Since the confrontation between the two artists, which took place as Budden was doing a live webcast from backstage, multiple sources have claimed that Raekwon made an unofficial statement to fans during his performance at the San Manuel Ampitheater.

In an exclusive statement to AllHipHop.com, however, a representative for Raekwon’s IceH2O said otherwise.

“Contrary to various reports that have been circulating on the internet since Saturday, Raekwon has made no statement, either official or unofficial, about a reported altercation that supposedly involved members of his entourage and rap artist Joe Budden,” the rep maintained. “This includes statements allegedly made to the staff of Rock The Bells. Raekwon and his associates are busy focusing on his company, IceH2O and preparing for the highly anticipated release of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II.”

Following the alleged incident, Budden appeared on camera to approximately 800 fans, holding a towel and ice to the side of his face.

The Slaughterhouse rapper told viewers he had been hit in the side of the face and in the right shoulder.

Throughout the webcast, Budden and the others present were clear that Raekwon was not the alleged assailant, although Budden has since challenged Raekwon to a “square dance” or fist fight.

Raekwon’s highly anticipated follow up to his 1995 debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is scheduled to hit stores September 8.
