50 Cent Cleared in Arson Case

50 Cent was cleared this week of foul pay in the May 2008 blaze that destroyed his $1.4 million Long Island mansion. The mogul confirmed the verdict on his social networking site thisis50.com, stating the New York police department and insurance investigators determined there was “absolutely no proof or evidence” that 50 caused the fire. 50 Cent, real name Curtis Jackson, came under suspicion after his son’s mother Shaniqua Tompkins accused him of committing arson. Just weeks prior to the fire, 50 Cent had a successfully secured an eviction of both Tompkins and his son. Although Tompkins and Marquise were present at the time of the still undetermined blaze, both were able to escape without serious injury. Last April, Tompkins filed a lawsuit in Manhattan Supreme Court claiming that 50 Cent had promised her legal ownership of the home prior to closing. At the time, the property was estimated to be worth 2.4 million. The fallout from this situation sparked a feud between 50 and Miami rapper Rick Ross, who ridiculed the Queens emcee over the arson allegations with the track “Mafia Music.” At press time, 50 Cent is working to secure a release date for his much-delayed fourth studio album Before I Self Destruct

Grouch & Eli: “Say G&E” (Album Review)

8/10

Hip-Hop fusion at its finest, The Grouch and Eligh, both of Living Legends, crossbreed genres while meshing together their signature lyrical fluidity on their latest album, Say G&E! (Legendary Music).

From a banging beat you can’t shake from your head to a bluesy country track you’ll vibe to, The Grouch and Eligh will have you hanging on their every word.

The duo kicks off spoken word style and quickly speed up the pace on the album’s anthem “Say G&E.” The Grouch and Eligh are no strangers to pushing the limit and they do exactly that on “Push On (Push Up).” The Grouch’s verbiage lures the ear while Eligh’s verbal quickness makes the head spin. “Me and my boys had a ploy to make some noise / Underground, invisible, but not unheard our words destroy.”

Inevitably, the duo does get political on “Worried About The World.” Eligh’s Rap style is very similar to Andre3000, but his lyricism is beyond intelligent. “Captain America dug a burial plot / And you gonna end up in that motherf***er ready or not / If you’re standing in between his riches get out the way.”

With a maturity rarely seen in Hip-Hop, the duo delves into the topic of drugs and abuse on “Denial.” “You found a path off the track and you followed that / And now you lack what you had; I can’t swallow that / You were my friend to the end and now you’re hollowed out.”

Not always so serious, The Grouch and Eligh let loose on the Amp Live produced track “!BOOM!” Just as easy as it is to have fun, Grouch and Eligh smoothly transition from synthesized beats to crooning on smooth R&B tracks like “Do It Again” and “No Flowers” to rapping over classical Hip-Hop production on “Rivers Run Dry” and “Comin’ Up.” There’s not a genre of music that this duo is afraid to touch – “All In” is a successful blend of Hip-Hop’s wordplay and a country twang.

Say G&E! is a fresh sound to today’s Hip-Hop as The Grouch and Eligh cross lines and dabble in experimentation, all the while with tight lyrics that complete the album’s innovative focus.

TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE: Mike Jones

Welcome to the Mike Jones edition of of AllHipHop.com’s Top 5 Dead or Alive, a reoccurring series. Mike Jones has given the world his phone number, email address and all other contact information, but he hasn’t given his Top 5 rappers. Mike wanted people to be clear that his list is just that – HIS. “Honestly, personally this is Mike Jones personal Top 5, I don’t want anyone saying, ‘Oh Mike Jones don’t know what he’s talking about,” the Houston rapper said.

His sophomore album The Voice, which features the single “Swagga Right”, was recently released to stores, but like Slim Thug, he’s already platinum. Here is Top 5 Dead or Alive: Mike Jones.

Notorious B.I.G.

“Number one, I’m going to have to go with Biggie. The reason why I go with Biggie; I know people are going to say Pac over Biggie and all that, but that’s a debate that can forever go on. Everyone has their personal opinion of why they like each individual. I love them both; it’s a hard decision. I like Biggie because he had similar things that he went through at the bottom coming to the top like I did.”

“He let people know off the gate his downfall, he let people know that he dropped out of school and people considered him a fool. Now they’re misled; now they looking at him like this. He went from Nintendo’s to not having none to whatever he wants. He went from being thirsty and now he’s popping champagne. It was a before and after, negative positive. Anybody can do it, “fat, black, ugly as ever, however; I stay Gucci down to the socks.” Like, you ain’t going to stop my swag, I don’t care if I have four bullet wounds right here; I’m still going to rock this Gucci. That’s how Biggie let it be known on “Juicy,” that was my favorite record.”

Tupac Shakur

“Second, it has to be Tupac because they’re right there with each other. Tupac, he just let it be known, “Dear Mama,” he just let it be known. Both of those artists had nothing to hide when it came to expressing how they felt musically. They had the type of audience core foundation, so when they said something people heard it. Like when Tupac, he’s the only person if everybody said it wasn’t cool to do “Dear Mama,” Tupac’s going to do a ‘Dear Mama’ and get a pass, he’s the only one that’s going to get that pass.”

“Trend setting, I don’t just sign on people’s lyrics; I’m looking at how is he able to transition or change Hip-Hop. When people are saying it’s not cool to do it, Tupac is coming out here, same thing! Everybody else says b***h, b***h, b***h, they tripping, but then Tupac come and say ‘Wonder why they call you a b***h?’ He ain’t calling you one; he’s just letting you know the reasons why they could call you that. Then when people heard, they’re ‘Like oh okay yeah like Pac said [it]’ and roll off that. So I have to give him that!”

Jay-Z

“Number three, I have to go with Jay-Z. From when everything was going down to where it’s a new [era] in Hip-Hop and he still is relevant; that’s important because stuff change in and out. He’s still not only relevant but he’s still making more revenue than a person that is the main person in the game at the time, from a business point of view.”

“You might have a Young Bug [fictional rap name] who might be the hottest thing smoking, but Jay-Z still pulled in $90 million in one year. How you do that and you ain’t a Young Bug? You feel what I’m saying? You would think that Young Bug would have brought that in because all of the talk is on him, but Jay pulled in more than him and he’s away from the camera sitting down. So you got to respect that, feel me, then you got a female [Beyonce] who’s bringing in the same thing as you! My hat of to you, homie!”

T.I.

“Number four, I ain’t going to lie; I got to go with Tip. He is like the young spokesman for d-boys-slash-you can still clean it up and make a better way for yourself. That’s the Tip-slash-T.I., he’s showing you both sides are true. It’s showing you I’m representing, I’m doing all this, I’m looking at this, he still can smooth, casual, switch it up and get a pass; that’s something that everybody can’t do neither. That’s why you’ve got to take your hat off to him.”

Lil Wayne

“You got to give the other one to Wayne. Wayne just came out of nowhere, I mean he’s been doing it from Hot Boys on, but he reinvented himself. Then while he was already doing his thing, it went from dreads, the guitar, he’s already putting the mastermind together. Y’all don’t really understand what he’s doing. In a minute, they’re going to understand, by the time people started understanding and catching to what he was doing, he was already out of here. He’s on a Rock album right now that people don’t really understand, but in time, people understand.”

“That’s what I learned in this game, from me giving the number, to him doing something that a lot of people ain’t understanding. A lot of people are behind. If it ain’t happening right now in their eyes, it ain’t it, you feel what I‘m saying. You got to have someone that takes that step out; you know what I’m going to try. So if it don’t work, it just don’t work; you got to have people that do that because if you don’t then we all following each other. Somebody’s got to take the lead! Sometimes it pays off big and sometimes it lose, anything is a gamble. Those five people are not only who are relevant right now, but have done and are still changing Hip-Hop along with the other top six through 100 people. Those are just elite!”

The Side Bar:

Jones’ honorable mention would be Kanye West.

“I give Kanye his card to because Kanye is a person who could make a track, rap on the track and master the track. I mean he don’t need anybody. When you show him love, you got to show love to Jay-Z because he opened the door for him to do that. It’s just like 50 Cent, 50 is a monster that’s my homie; he knows his business. You got to show Eminem love, because Eminem opened the door and 50 is doing his thing. Dre opened the door and Em is doing his thing. People have amnesia sometimes on how the game is supposed to go. If I open the door for you, you open the door for him and that’s how it’s supposed to go. Some people open the door, open the door and close the door!”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Eddie Griffin Breaks Down? Shawnna Gets Thick! Lloyd Banks Unites NY?

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

THE DAILY TWO SENSE

Funny. I was thinking about old cats as I added this look at Soulja boy’s new cartoon. I mean, it looks like Soulja boy has officially defied the odds. He didn’t fall off as a one hit wonder as many suspected. He’s officially got two hits…lol. I think the old dudes lost and Soulja Boy won. Am I wrong? Click here for a behind the scenes look at his new cartoon with Alphonzo Ribera.

OH S**T! DIPSET REUNION RUMORS! JIM TO DISS CAM?

Again, this is a rumor that I hope is false. I mean I REALLY hope this one is false. But, you know what the reputation for Summer Jam is, right? Rappers dissing each other or somebody making a huge announcement! I am hearing that the proposed Dipset reunion has been deaded. You all might have seen the video online of Cam’ron saying “NO” to the reunion we all wanted to see happen. I am hearing that Jim Jones may be the centerpiece for this years’ Summer Jam and he MAY be taking a shot at his former friend and rap buddy.

50 CENT IS OFF THE HOOK! DIDN’T BURN HIS HOUSE DOWN!

50 Cent was once a suspect in burning down his own home as his son and baby moms stayed in there. But, Fif is officially off the list of possible suspects. You might remember but the Long Island mansion housed his son Marquise and mother Shaniqua Tompkins. This is the official word: “the police department and insurance investigators ruled that there is absolutely no proof or evidence suggesting that Curtis Jackson or any affiliated parties were involved. Curtis Jackson has just been cleared of all the accusations. The investigation will continue until the guilty party is found.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF JAY-Z’S COMMENTS ABOUT MUSIC?

I would have to say that I disagree with Jay on this one. Sounds like the hokey talk to get more mainstream acceptance to me.

“I thought that to be the oddest pairing ever but, soon realized, it’s what I’ve always professed. There is no such thing as black music or white music only good or bad music. It’s stupid cool to like things that are not like you, and that goes for outside of music. If you’re an African American you can have a Jewish friend…”

Eh!

YOUNG BUCK UPSETS FANS!

A lot of people are rooting for Young Buck, even thought its not looking to great for the young rapper. He’s still the man in our books for his rapping skills and realness. But, there are some recent fans that aren’t too happy after they tried to express support for Mr. Ten-a-Key. Here is the letter I got, straight from the fan’s keyboard:

wassup Illseed? Now 1st off i must say I’m a big Young Buck fan son when my panther (whom is a DJ) invited me to go with him to a Young Buck show because he’s was going to host and DJ in Greenwood, Mississippi I jumped on it. !st up the promoter told us he spent upwards to 25K on the show. They told us they sold a whole lot of tickects so I’m expecting the show to be @ lest smi packed. Mann, other than the opening acts, about 20 people showed up for the show. Buck must got the word because he didn’t show up either. I still can’t understand how this happened because they did a lot of promotion and Buck was even on the radio. I know it’s been 2 years since Buck dropped an album but damn, thats a bad look

I’m still a major fan of Buck and I hope we get another album from him eventually.

LLOYD BANKS PULLS NEW YORK TOGETHER!

There might be hope to see NYC come back to form. We have quite a few people doing their thing and then there is Lloyd Banks. I heard that Banks has confirmed that he’s got a track with Jadakiss, Juelz, Fabolous and possible others. I also hear Banks is working with Ransom, Ron Browz and Uncle Murda. Now that Banks is a free agent, it looks like a good deal is in the works for him, Def Jam or Atlantic.

EDDIE GRIFFIN HAD A MAURY MOMENT!?

Nancy and Buck from my Hot Morning Crew hit me up and gave me some intel that they heard. We’re hearing that Eddie Griffin got drunk and started crying on stage at the Funnybone Comedy Club Friday Nite in Manchester Connecticut. Apparently two people started giving him shots of gin… and out came the “truth.” He allegedly got toasted and started spilling his guts about how his 10-year-old son isn’t his. He said he just got a DNA test and it proved that he was not the father. He started crying on stage talking about it, I heard. OH BOY…poor guy. To make matters worse, I heard they called the cops to “help him” and he almost got arrested! This is comedy night and this isn’t funny! people were getting mad at the audience members who were feeding him drinks. A listener told Nancy, “I was at the show on Friday night and saw everything that happened, it was crazy! It was so awkward when he started crying about his kid!! We got up and left when the cops came and he started yelling about being handcuffed too. Someone out there has a video from outside the mall. ”

I heard Eddie had a show for Saturday, but they just cancelled.

JAY-Z CAN’T LIKE THIS!

I know acting is not real life, but what if you make it real life? LOL. Idris Elba recently had to do a kissing scene with Beyonce and he surely got a kick out of it.

He said:

“It was weird when I met her – within 20 minutes we had to kiss. I wasn’t complaining. It was full on, we had to do these pictures for the wall and it was full on kissing. I was like, ‘Oh god, I’m kissing Beyonce, I can’t believe it.’”

He got a kick out of it, but I would have gotten a stomp, a punch and a bite out it like Chris Brown! LOL! Jay-Z is the man though. He was doing it up real big in Vegas.

FREEWAY’S NEW ALBUM

Here is the latest on Freeway. The philly spitter is working with Jake One, I’m hearing. Jake is from Seattle and Freeway has been out there working on his new album. Jake is producing ALL of it, I heard. Rumor has it, Free wants to go old school with it. Like Premier and Guru used to do. I heard Jake and Freeway knocked out eight songs in two days. LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO! Real Hip-Hop! LOL!

HALLE LAYS DOWN THE LAW!

This cannot be the way to raise a child. YUCK.

MO’ MONEY MO’ PROBLEMS FOR RICK ROSS

You couldn’t pay me to be a rapper these days. This dude named Ric Tann is about to all out “assault” Rick Ross. He’s already sent out a plea to 50 Cent to pay for some songs that Ross did. To me, the songs sound like reference tracks for a female. I could be wrong. Anyway, Ric says that he and Ross go way back to when the BAWSE wasn’t so bossy. He also says he is going to release a new video on how Rick Ross got the nickname Boss. I thought that was because Rick was in command. Apparently, there is something more to that. These dudes are reportedly working on a full DVD of anti-Ross material. These guys have a lot of material on the way.

SHAWNNA THICKENS UP!

How did she manage to get this thick this fast?

CHARLES HAMILTON EXTENDS OLIVE BRANCH TO RAPPERS

Looks like Charles Hamilton is tired of beefing. Check out this blog post his put on his blog:

I JUST sent a message to Rhymefest on Twitter to get his number. Honestly, I’m tired of people hitting me up about it, and even more honestly, this kind of s### can be resolved. Of all that I gotta deal with on the regular, pseudo-beef over some bullsh1t is the least of my priorities. But for the sake of the artform, I can get off my “I can’t stand this n#### s###” for a few minutes to hear FROM HIM (and not an interview) what the big deal is, and say my piece…

Without either of us going off the deep end.

It’s about time diss tracks just f*ckin stop. Dead ass…

So ‘Fest, you get the message, hit me back witchur math. You ain’t gotta like me, but hip-hop is bigger than macho ignorance…

And that offer is extended to ANYONE in this business who has an issue. No wax, no sublims, no “threats”, no Twarguments. Either on the phone or face-to-face.

From artists to execs, in ANY form of industry.

Let’s go…

TWIT-A-LABORATIONS

Just got word that MoeRoc & Charles Hamilton are working on an Album together called “Harlem In The Fast Lane” that will be Produced by Charles Hamilton. This could be very interesting. The two released ‘The Beginning’ a few weeks ago & are now finishing the album/mixtape. I heard that this might drop mid June.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY

You’re pimp hand must be weak if you can’t keep an 8-year-old in check. I am kidding, but I am actually very serious. An 8-year-old Saudi girl has divorced her 50-year-old husband. I wrote about this so I want to refresh your memory. The girl’s father SOLD her to the middle-aged husband for about $13,000. She was forced to marry the man and be one hell-uv-a young wife. Saudi Arabia offers no minimum age for marriage, but there are times when there is consent needed. Now, they said that she would have to wait for puberty to get divorced, but she got herself a lawyer and got free! Good deal, but these men need to find a better way to get money. Selling your daughter isn’t G.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

I am hearing that Fab and Ne-Yo are moving closer to that Best of Both Worlds project we’ve been hearing about.

Who remember McGruff? He’s a Harlem OG that I heard Cam’ron recently signed.

Rumor has it Tyler Perry and Oprah are working on a movie together called “Precious.”

If you didn’t already know, Red Café is definitely signed to Bad Boy records.

They are saying that Rihanna turned down that Dubai “comeback” gig. Good for her.

ILL PICS

Is Lauren London still a banger? Something is missing.

Eminem Planning Violent Game For iPhone

Rapper Eminem has revealed a gaming application that could find its way into the iTunes application store.

The rapper announced the game on his Twitter page and posted a link to the game, which is also titled Relapse.

Eminem has had a tense relationship with iTunes.

The two have battled in court twice, the first time over a commercial that featured Eminem’s track “Lose Yourself,” the second over downloading royalties.

In 2005, Eminem’s Eight Mile Style publishing company agreed to an undisclosed financial settlement over an iPod commercial that featured “Lose Yourself,” without permission.

In March of 2009, FBT Productions, a company affiliated with Eminem, sued Universal Records in an attempt to get higher royalty rates on all digital sales through Apple’s iTunes App Store.

FBT argued that their tracks were “masters,” which were then reproduced as digital copies.

While Eminem was not a party to that lawsuit, FBT, he would have made millions, had FBT one the case, which went in favor of Universal, after a judge ruled that a sold online is no different than a song bought in a store.

It appears that the various legal skirmishes have not impacted Eminem’s relationship with Apple thus far, although the rapper’s proposed game may not help the relationship.

The screen capture of The Relapse game features a tattooed figure angrily approaching a skeleton or masked-liked figure, with a studded 2×4.

The game may not meet Apple’s standards for decency, as similar apps like “Slasher” and “Murderdrome” have been rejected in the past.

More recently, an updated iPhone app from Nine Inch Nails was rejected, reportedly due to the lyrical content of their album The Downward Spiral.

Trent Reznor, who is currently protesting the decision, pointed out that iTunes carries the album in the store, yet has blocked the album’s application to iPhones.

Tomorrow (May 5), Eminem’s track “Old Time’s Sake” featuring Dr. Dre will go on sale in Apple’s iTunes store.

No official word is available about Eminem’s Relapse application. Eminem’s album The Relapse hits stores May 19.

Illseed Video: Maino Cries Over Friend Shot By Cops

I’m going to be honest for a second.

I have never been a very big fan of Maino. I knew his reputation was in great street standing and I thought his rap skills were up to par. But there was something preventing me from giving him that nod.

That all changed after I saw footage of the rapper tearing up and emotional at the recent concert date in New York.

Being that I am in the business of rumors, I got word that Maino was worried about the NYPD for some unknown reason. Because of his thuggish reputation, I mistakenly thought he had gotten himself in some legal quandary and was looking at some jail time. Jokes on me…

Come to find out, his friend was shot in the back by the NYPD and may never walk again. I have no idea what transpired with Maino’s friend and the police officers, but the emotions that Maino showed gave him exponential depth as an artist. Moreover, I saw him as a person that is wrought with all the complexities that human men tend to suppress.

Slapping Lil Cease and Young Berg is one way to show how much of a man you are, and then there is the compassion over a fallen friend.

Here is Maino fighting through tears and emotions to perform “All Of The Above” at the White House Night Club in Hampton Bays, Long Island on a Saturday in April.

I hope his friend makes it out, because he’s got a real comrade in Maino. As for the Brooklyn rapper…he’s got a new fan.

Nelly Launches Apple Bottom Fragrance

Hip-Hop star Nelly is diversifying his business portfolio with a new fragrance and body care line through his brand, Apple Bottoms.

Nelly has teamed with Romane Fragrances to distribute the scent, which is also named Apple Bottoms by Nelly.

The rapper has also launched a line of body care products centered around the Apple Bottom brand, which launched in 2003 and currently includes eyewear, women’s denim, jewelry and handbags.

The Apple Bottom’s by Nelly fragrance is due to hit stores nationally this fall.

In related news, Nelly recently helped two Saint Louis high school students attend college, via a partnership with Lindenwood University.

The rapper partnered with Lindenwood last fall to create the Black and White Scholarship, which he awarded to the students during a surprise visit to the school’s campus last week.

Students were required to submit an essay describing their goals for college and future plans.

The winners of this year’s scholarships were Jeremy Word and Terranique Campbell.

Bumpy Johnson’s Wife Mayme Dead At 94

Mayme Hatcher Johnson, the widow of former Harlem underworld boss Bumpy Johnson, died on Friday (May 1).

The outspoken Mayme Johnson, 94, died in her Philadelphia home of respiratory failure, according to reports.

Mrs. Johnson was born in 1914 in North Carolina. In 1938, she moved to New York, where she eventually met her husband Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson.

The pair were married in New York in 1948.

Bumpy was the undisputed king of the Harlem underworld, until he died of a heart attack in a New York restaurant in 1968.

Bumpy was allegedly the mentor of Harlem heroin drug Frank Lucas, who was portrayed by Denzel Washington in the movie American Gangster.

Mayme wrote a book Harlem Godfather: The Rap on My Husband, Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, which was published in 2008.

One of her motives in writing the book was her anger at how her husband was portrayed in movies like Shaft, The Cotton Club, Hoodlum and American Gangster.

Mayme Johnson lashed out at Frank Lucas in the book, due to his Washington’s portrayal of the Heroin dealer in American Gangster.

Mayme considered Lucas a “flunky” in Bumpy Johnson’s organization.

“He was never Bumpy’s driver. Especially no 15-year stretch,” Mayme Johnson told AllHipHop.com. “The real relationship between Bumpy and Frank was basically Frank was just a person that would hold Bumpy’s coat and follow him around and just…very distant, very poor. He had no real relationship with Bumpy. Bumpy had friends like Nat Petigrew, Junie Byrd, Sonny Chance, the Capuzza Brothers and all them people like that. Frank Lucas did not fit into that circle. He was never invited to the house.”

According to sources, Mayme Johnson’s Harlem Godfather: The Rap on My Husband, Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson will be turned into a feature film.

Deams: From Amsterdam to Gangstarr and Back

When it comes to Hip-Hop, the prize goes to the artist that toils through the darkness, emerging into the light of success. Deams is a testament to the undying tenacity it takes to make it and that of the love of Hip-Hop.

During a visit to Amsterdam, I was fortunate enough to jump off the high-speed track of the rat race and conversed with Deams about all of the above. It was odd for me. We definitely had more in common than not, even though he’s from a completely different part of the world. In my exchange with Deams, I was quickly reminded of the universal qualities progressive hip-hoppers have.

Deams is one rap war vet has battled much for his music, eventually finding some solace with the legendary Gangstarr. But now, he’s back with a vengeance, world and he’s got Big Daddy Kane, Ice T, Chuck D, Jeru the Damaja, De La Soul and DJ Premier backing him up.

AllHipHop.com: Give me a bit of history from your point of view.

Deams: I’m one of the pioneers in the Dutch and European Hip Hop scene, I was signed to Gangstarr productions, released a few records on an underground level that sold well in Japan and did shows all over the world representing Holland to the fullest, trough that I was blessed to met some of the biggest names in Hip Hop including fallen pioneers like Notorious BIG, Tupac Shakur and Jam Master Jay, I was also the first Dutch MC that got featured in magazines such as The Source bringing Holland to the attention of international media and still am.

AllHipHop.com: How do you describe your style of rap?

Deams: I’m a very diverse but realistic MC. I rap about things that I went through, things that I’m about to go through and things from a third person’s perspective. But my style changes with how I’m feeling at the time. One day I might be in a real cocky mood and just write some hard braggadocios rhymes on some hardcore Hip Hop s###. Another day I just reflect on personal experiences, observe the world around me and what other people go through and just write some realistic rhymes, but it will always be on some timeless Hip Hop material.

AllHipHop.com: Talk about your relationship with Gangstarr and Guru? What memories do you have from that period of time?

Deams: I met Gangstarr when I performed in New York at the new music seminar, we clicked from the start and always stayed in touch. I stayed at their house in Brooklyn all the time so it was a family thing and through that I witnessed some of Premier’s greatest classics being recorded at D&D studios. I was signed to Gangstarr productions along with other members like Jeru the Damaja, Group Home, Fabidden Fruit, Afu-Ra, Big Shug and so forth. I stayed in New York at that time recording a lot of demos while they were trying to get me a deal, the problem was that I couldn’t get a green card to stay longer and they had some serious problems going on with their former label at the time, so it all fell through. I later on released one of the records I did with Guru through a Dutch label, it’s a shame what happened with Gangstarr but everyone makes their own choices, it was a real tight family back then and I was blessed and proud to be a part of it. I haven’t spoke to Guru in a couple of years now but I’m still in touch with Premier and we talked about doing a record together depending on his crazy schedule of course, so the love and the connection is still there, I’m a Gangstarr family member for life.

AllHipHop.com: You did a song with Big Daddy Kane. How was that experience. Did you meeting him or did you use technology to get your goads achieved. Who else are you working with or hope to collaborate with?

Deams: We recorded that song when he came to Amsterdam, we know each other for years now and he even gave me a shout out on the track “Finale” of his album Looks Like A Job For. I was always a huge Big Daddy Kane fan and he’s still one of the Top 5 MC’s of all time so it was a great experience when we finally got together to record “State Your Game,” he’s a beast on the mic and taught me a lot about timing and putting the right words together. Next to BDK, I recorded tracks for “The Legacy” with Ice-T, Chuck D, De La Soul and Jeru the Damaja, all the tracks were recorded in Amsterdam, except for the joint I did with Ice, we recorded that one in New York. I’m also a big M.O.P fan and a while back we met and talked about doing a track together, they were with it so that’s in the works.

AllHipHop.com: Can you tell me about the way Hip-Hop is represented in Amsterdam in particular and, in general, Holland?

Deams: Hip-Hop in Holland was always represented to the fullest on a underground level, and has an active Hip Hop scene since the early eighties representing the whole culture with all the 5 elements. The past few years it’s getting more and more media exposure after being ignored for years and poppin’ up in movies and commercials, but like everywhere else that also brought out a lot of pop rap acts. Next to that, most people know the history of Hip-Hop very well and are very up to date with what’s going on around the world, but also created their own scene, especially the ones that rap in Dutch. Holland is a small country of only 17 million (especially compared to neighboring Germany with 82 million), so the scene isn’t that big but people love Hip-Hop to death over here. Just ask all the American acts that did shows in Holland, it’s definitely growing bigger each year and Holland always had some of the best Hip Hop acts that Europe has to offer. Most of them just didn’t get their shine yet, but that will soon change.

AllHipHop.com: Who are some of the other names in Hip-Hop in places like Amsterdam and even Rotterdam?

AllHipHop.com: How is your music received here in the States and locally?

Deams: Judging from the promotion on numerous websites and the airplay I’m getting on shows like Hip Hop Nation/Sirius, the Halftime show and more I can’t complain, feels like they are finally opening up to Hip-Hop from out of the States. In Holland, I always was very well respected in the scene, and since the single “State Your Game’ is spreading like wild fire, the media is catching up on it.

AllHipHop.com: What is your view of Hip-Hop in the US and what is Amsterdam’s view of the United States at this point in time?

Deams: I can’t really speak for everyone else, but my point of view is that there’s a lack of creativity with a lot of cats sounding alike, seems like they are playing it safe. It’s not all of them, but the ones that are real diverse and creative ain’t getting that shine, but luckily there’s the internet where you can find some of the better stuff that you wont hear on the radio or will see on TV. Over here I’m noticing a shift amongst the new generation, I’m seeing more and more teens getting tired of a lot of the new material that’s being put out and are diggin’ for material from the golden age en the 90s, you will never hear me say that in the old days Hip Hop was much better but something definitely needs to change.

AllHipHop.com: What rappers are the most influential there?

Deams: Can’t really say, but I hope I will be the one that will open some more doors for all the talented artists and producers we got over here.

AllHipHop.com: You recently partook in a conference called New Skool Rules, where people from over 20 countries came together to represent Hip-Hop. How was that experience?

Deams: When it came to networking with people from other countries it was great but because of the door price and lack of proper promo it didn’t attract enough of the upcoming artists and producers who it was meant for, so hopefully that will change if they decide to do it next year. But it was great that they started something like that over here.

AllHipHop.com: Can you give the readers information on when your project will be out?

Deams: The release of The Legacy EP is scheduled for June and will be a digital release available at iTunes worldwide, Amazon mp3, Emusic, Rhapsody, Napster, Amie Street and more. It will contain 7 songs including tracks with Big Daddy Kane, Ice T, Chuck D, Jeru the Damaja, De La Soul and an intro by DJ Premier. As an extra bonus buyers will also receive a Legacy comic. In the same month the single “State your Game” will also be released on vinyl in a limited edition with 3 remixes.

AllHipHop.com: Any final words?

Deams: Dont sleep on Hip-Hop from Holland! And to all upcoming artists, learn the music business, do some research on online marketing/promotion, digital distribution and do it yourself! Follow me for updates on all of my projects on twitter.com/Deams and http://www.deamsmusic.com.
