Welcome to You Know I Got Soul, the Top 5 Dead or Alive for AllHipHop Alternatives, where we give artists a chance to list their Top 5 favorites outside of the realm of Hip-Hop. You never know what your favorite artist is listening to. Our special guest is B.o.B.Bobby Ray Simmons aka B.o.B has been keeping busy lately. Apart from his recent
signing to T.I.’s Grand Hustle Records, he’s been doing his best to
perfect his upcoming album, The Adventures of B.o.B. So what seems to
inspire B.o.B. in a time where many are uninspired? He’s doing his best
to bring the more eclectic side of Hip-Hop to light, and he spoke on
five of his favorite artists to AllHipHop Alternatives to shed a bit of light on
where he gets some of his influences.1. Bjork I love Bjork. She
is simultaneously in another dimension and another level of awareness
along with me and many other people. I can share her understanding and
taste in music. I saw her new video Wanderlust [off of 2007s
Volta] and it is just trippy.
2. Coldplay Im a huge Coldplay
fan. I went to one of their concerts. I dont know, maybe its
the standard but you dont usually hear of an artist going to another
artists concert, but I went and it was dope. The reason why Im
such a huge Coldplay fan is because very rarely do I hear something
and I am like Yeah, this is the sh*t. I heard Green Eyes
and all that stuff before many years earlier, but I was so young I couldnt
appreciate it. Anyway, I was burning one day and heard Fix You
[off of 2005s X&Y] and was just like Yup. Every song on
the album immediately became my favorite and it didnt have to grow
on me, it was instant.
3. Keane Theyre from the
UK, and Im a huge Keane fan. I listen to them a lot. Theyre kinda
like Coldplay, in the same realm of things. I found about them and a
lot of other artists on Pandora, because I just turn it on and let it
play.
4. Raphael
Saadiq Hes dope. He was actually the singer from Tony! Toni!
Toné! and he just dropped an album [2008s The Way I See It], so
I just went and bought that. Hes going back to Motown with this one,
and he kept it pretty consistent with the genre and the sound. I mean
it really sounds like Motown.
5. Green Day Theyre very
aware of the social archetypes and structures that we live and die by,
which is expressed in their music, especially with their [album] title,
American Idiot. Immediately, I thought, Oh that definitely describes
the American mind state. You cant talk about each individual,
but for the masses, they are just really lost in the realm of society,
fame and pop culture. Everybody flocks to whats in and popular. Its
such a pointless focus when you look at the entire world and whats
going on around us, and a lot of their music talks about that. B.o.B’s album The Adventures of B.o.B. hits stores this summer.**To get the latest AllHipHop Alternatives Features, follow us on Twitter @ www.twitter.com/AHHalternatives**

TODAY’S RUMORS!
KANYE OR JD?
There is a rumor that Kanye West is going around by an alias called the “Tokin’ Black Guy.” I have to admit that I don’t believe this rumor to be true, but I thought I would let it entertain us anyway. Tokin Black Guy has released a few songs, more notably “Body Clock” and “Turn My Music High.” Anyway, I heard that this “Kanye West” is actually Jermaine Dupri in disguise. Who knows! Anyway, whoever keeps emailing me and claiming to be Kanye West, keep doing it. It makes me feel important and stuff like Kanye knows who I am!
R.KELLY: WHY HE GOT MACED?
Do you remember, once upon a time, Jay-Z and R.Kelly toured together as the Best of Both Worlds ? Do you remember that? Anyway, that was indeed a very ill-fated tour. One of the highlights was when Jay-Zs boy Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith maced R. Kelly in the face, a move that required Kelz to go to the hospital. But, I heard Kelly might have does something to disrespect Beyonce and then got the biz-ness. What he may have done, I dont know. That was so long ago, I forgot.
CONGRATS TO RYAN LESLIE!
I heard that Ryan Leslie has finally once and for all- gotten rid of the memory of Cassie! I have been informed that RL is now officially off the market. He is an engaged man to a fine young lady. I mean, thats a winner right? Congrats dude!
THE END AND NEW ERA IS HERE:
Kelly Rowland:
Mathew Knowles has been a positive influence in my career. I have had great success under his guidance – both as a member of Destinys Child and with my solo projects. Although we have decided to part ways professionally, the Knowles family and the entire Music World Entertainment team will always be my family.
Matthew Knowles:
After a very positive meeting between Kelly Rowland and myself, we have amicably agreed to end our professional relationship. My company, Music World, will continue to manage Destinys Child as a group. As an artist Kelly has incredible talent and I only wish her the best. We will always be family first and foremost, and as a dad I only have love for Kelly.
WILLIE D OF THE GETO BOYS TRICKS FOX!
Geto Boys member Willie D’s group has tricked Fox! From what I understand, his rap group Huntzville (for context they are three white guys) The group performed their new single “Backpack Fulla Gunz” Friday on Fox TV in Houston morning show. The group p##### somebody off because Fox issued an apology on their website, stating “Fox 26 apologizes to those viewers who were offended by the musical group Huntzville’s performance during Friday morning’s show.” Here is what Willie D had to say about that: “In over 20 years of working in the music business, I never seen a television station or network apologize for a group’s lyrics. Huntzville performed a song about school shootings, warning the public of an extreme consequence of bullying. We have nothing to apologize for.”
Willie also said, “Not so long ago, the repercussions for bullying another student meant you got sent to the principal’s office or sent home. Today, bullies are being sent to the cemetery.”
ILLSEED’S QUICKIE
Big Joe, former muscle of Dip Set, is doing a book called “Interview Of A Diplomat.” He’s going in on a lot of people I heard. Wow. He said, “There ain’t s**t you can do about it.”
JACKI-O’S NEW DRAMA
I am hearing that Jacki-O is having some label drama, even though she is on the cover of magazines looking pretty fresh. Apparently, she’s recorded enough songs to release at least four or five album. I don’t know who Gracie Productions is, but they seem to be a company that works closely with Jacki-O. I am being told that they picked six older songs to be released on the album along with 5 new ones. I heard Jacki-O may not be pleased with the way things are going down. I can’t call it!!!
BIGGIE’S KIDS ICHAT
This is very weird, but cool to see Big’s kids chilling and normal.
EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY
Dayum!
SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END
This story broke yesterday and I know everybody saw it, but I HAVE to put it up. Ervin Lupoe killed his entire family, including five kids and his wife. Ervin Lupoe killed them all and then took his own life. They were found shot to death in the upstairs of the family’s home.
“The reaction on their faces was not a pretty sight,” neighbor Jasmine Gomez told CNN. “There was an officer who came out of the house throwing up.”
Ervin Lupoe went off after both he and his wife lost their jobs. Lupoe and his wife worked at Kaiser Permanente’s West Los Angeles Medical Center and they were both let go. The 40-year-old Ervin Lupoe was in the midst of a dispute with his job and claimed, in a suicide note, that his boss told him to kill himself. The medical center denies this.
Lupoe wrote in the suicide note that was faxed to a local news station, “after a horrendous ordeal, my wife felt it better to end our lives; and why leave our children in someone else’s hands … we have no job and 5 children under 8 years with no place to go. So here we are.”
They were only fired a WEEK or so ago! GOOD GOD! Anyway, this is insanity and it’s becoming more and more frequent. No matter what, its never hopeless! Hold on!
Here are the dead-Ana Elizabeth Lupoe was 38; the children: 8-year-old Brittney Nicole; 5-year-old twins Jaszmin Lissette and Jassely Lisbeth; and 2-year-old twins Christian De Shawn and Benjamin Ryan.
Final sign: Ana Elizabeth was reportedly pregnant with twins, according to her mother.

The Reverend Al Sharpton will join the families of two slain teenagers during an launching a nationwide drive against the “Stop Snitching” culture.
Rev. Sharpton, President of National Action Network, will appear with Bishop Victory Curry and Rev. Gaston Smith at Friendship MBC.
Additionally, Sharpton will add to the reward fund that has been established in finding the killer of 16-year-old Brandon Mills and 18-year-old Derrick ”Termite” Gloster.
The “Stop Snitchin” slogan gained popularity in 2004, when producers Rodney Bethea and Ronnie “Skinny Suge” Thomas released a DVD by the same title, which featured drug dealers exposing various Baltimore, Maryland informants.
The DVD also helped expose corrupt police in Baltimore, Maryland, as former BPD officers William King and Antonio Murray were sentenced to 34 years in prison, stemming from drug dealing allegations on the controversial release.
Thomas himself was eventually sentenced to 15 years in prison for an alleged assault drug conspiracy and extortion plot, after being arrested during a sweep of the TTP Bloods gang.
Around 2005, the “Stop Snitchin” slogan logo started to appear on clothing, popularized by rap groups like The Diplomats, as a fashion trend.
Group leader Cam’ron even appeared on an infamous segment of 60 Minutes in April of 2007, where he explained his reasoning behind supporting the slogan.
The concept has hindered many criminal investigations nationwide, including the Liberty City shootings, which took place in front of several dozen people on Friday (January 23).
Police believe one or multiple gun men sprayed a crowd of up to 50 people with an AK-47 assault rifle, leaving two dead and seriously wounding seven others.
”We are all hurting,” Gloster’s grandmother, Caron Dixon told The Miami Herald. We are just so tired of these guns.”
Most of those injured were students at Northwestern High School, where up to 20 police officers now patrol the area, for security reasons.
Hip-Hop mogul and former Liberty City resident Luther Campbell also plans to announce steps he is taking to heal the community tomorrow (January 29).
Mosley Shocks Margarito In Dominating TKO Win
If
you ever doubted Shane Mosleys merits for wearing the Sugar moniker,
that skepticism was dispelled this past Saturday (January 25). With
shocking ease, Shane Mosley outpunched, outboxed, bullied, and grinded
down Antonio Margarito to secure his second welterweight title.
With
a divorce and the BALCO fallout laboring on his mind, a stone-faced
Mosley was greeted with boos from the pro-Margarito crowd at the
Staples Center. The Tijuana Tornado, brimming with the confidence only
the title can bring, stalked to the ring assured that he would deliver
a memorable performance in his first defense.
In
round one, Mosley kept a snappy, consistent jab to Margaritos head and
the pit of his stomach. Determined to gain early respect, it was Mosley
who came forward with several flush, hard overhand rights and left
hooks to the body. Margarito was coming forward through the punches,
but ran into a brick wall as Mosley held and mauled him around the
ring. Despite this, Margarito was able to land a few stiff jabs to end
the round.
Round
two saw Sugar Shane focus his jab more to the body. The punch kept
Margarito stationary long enough for Mosley to rip multiple crushing
right hooks off Margaritos chin. The champion attempted to bully
forward through the assault, but Mosley would not give ground and
surprisingly controlled the larger Antonio in the clinches. A glancing
right from Margarito briefly got the crowd back into it before a lethal
Mosley left hook elicited ohhs from the crowd.
Although
the pro-Mexican crowd did not care for Shanes shock em and lock em
strategy, they were equally frustrated with Margaritos inability to
mount a significant offense once he got close. In a small reprieve,
Margarito was able to land several glancing albeit scoring uppercuts on
the inside as the round ended.
Mosley
began round three with a thudding jab-straight right to Margaritos
skull. Now desperate to get on board, Margarito began to get more
reckless in hopes of escaping Shanes holding tactics. The strategy
enabled Margarito to land an uppercut. However, Mosley fired back with
a six-punch shoeshine combo punctuated by a debilitating hard right.
The assault was followed by left-right hook combo, causing Margarito to
smile. That smile soon disappeared when Mosley fired a cracking right
hook to the body.
The
round did end on a somewhat hopeful note for the champion, as Margarito
was finally able to land a clean overhand right on Mosley.
After
losing a jab battle early into the fourth, Margarito found range on
Mosleys temple with a short left hook. The challenger immediately
retaliated with a left hook to the body, followed by two blistering
overhand counter rights. Margaritos attempt in the last 30 seconds to
bullying Mosley into the ropes only resulted in the champion absorbing
more combinations, each being punctuated with jolting right hands.
After
another one-sided fifth round, Margarito was now woefully behind on the
scorecards going into the sixth. Sugar Shane started the stanza with a
crisp jab-straight right to the head, followed by two more damaging
overhand rights. Margarito, befuddled by Mosleys speed and power,
could show nothing but his famed chin as his 37 year-old opponent
careened several more rights off his face.
For
the first time, Mosley was now the aggressor and backing up Margarito.
After bullying the champ into the ropes, Shane proceeded to distort his
foes neck to odd angles with three flush rights. In desperation,
Margarito attempted to roll off the ropes and exchange. Mosley, with
his superior handspeed, welcomed the exchanges and brutalized Margarito
with two more reverberating overhand rights to the head. With the
Tijuana native knocked back into the ropes, Mosley gave Margarito a
taste of his own medicine courtesy of clubbing body hooks.
The
seventh continued the methodical beating. As usual, Mosley paced
himself early behind his jab, and rained down haymaker left and right
hooks at will. Briefly, Margarito got the crowd behind him with a
cluster of glancing hooks that pushed Mosley to the ropes. However,
Shane wisely tied up the champion, and made sure to end the round with
his umpteenth hook combination to leave no doubt who was still in
command.
Round
eight saw both men initiate hard exchanges of hooks. Margarito seemed
to be gaining some traction, courtesy of a several long right hands
from the outside. Never one to back down, Mosley immediately returned
fire with hooks on his own. With 35 seconds remaining, Margarito fell
off balance courtesy of a failed right hand. Although Mosley missed
with his first uppercut counter, he connected squarely on the
champions jaw with a leaping hook.
Margarito
was badly stunned and within 2 seconds was further hurt by two
punishing right hooks. Mosley mercilessly continued the assault,
beating the fading champ across the ring with clusters of hooks before
dropping him seconds before the bell.
A
shaky Margarito slowly made it to his feet as the bell sounded and
saved him from a sure knockout. Impressed, Mosley went over and touched
gloves with foe before awaiting the deciding round.
Margaritos
cornermen nearly stopped the fight, but Margarito pleaded for another
round. Relenting, his corner sent the brave champ out to meet his fate.
Mosley
made short work of Margarito in the ninth, blistering him against the
ropes with successive hooks to secure the TKO stoppage with 2:17
remaining.
Now back atop the welterweight heap, Mosley credited his early body attack, speed, and power in the dominating win.
The
big left hook I throw very well. I got Fernando Vargas with it and
Ricardo Mayorga, Mosley stated to HBOs Larry Merchant. I softened
him up with the body shots. He was throwing some good body shots as
well [and] we were both catching each other with good body shots. Im a
big welterweight too. I have great handspeed and hitting power. Not
everyone can stand up to it. It was very exciting.
This
was a master-class performance from Shane Mosley. At times, he
controlled Margarito with a precise jab to the body which set up the
hook bombs that eventually ruined the former champ. In other instances,
Mosley would simply counter between Margaritos punches and outmuscle
him on the inside. Whether the fight was held on the outside or in the
trenches, Shane Mosley was the superior fighter.
It
will be interesting to watch who Mosley selects for his first defense.
Whoever it is, we can be assured Sugar Shane will deliver a quality
fight.
Margarito Caught Cheating, Questions Emerge About Previous Fights
Before
the fight, Antonio Margarito was ordered by the California State
Athletic Commission to rewrap his hands after new Mosley trainer Nazim
Richardson discovered plaster-like substance in the champions gloves.
According
to early reports from HBO announcers, the Golden Boy staff, and the
commission, the substance was found under both of Margaritos wraps.
It
was a plaster-like substance, Golden Boy attorney Stephen Espinoza
confirmed to ESPN.com. It was bagged up by the commission and taken as
evidence.
Early reports are alleging the substance was already wet, and would have hardened by the later rounds of the fight.
Fans
will remember Richardson also forced Felix Trinidad to rewrap his hands
due to excessive tapping before losing to Bernard Hopkins in 2001.
If
these reports turn out to be true, Margarito should be suspended
immediately. Boxing is life and death. An advantage like that can
result in career-altering damage to an opponent.
This
revelation also puts the Cotto fight under a microscope. Its unlikely
this was Margaritos first time cheating if the reports are true.
Against Cotto, Margaritos blows began doing more damage as the rounds
went on. In the span of about two rounds, Cotto was reduced to a blood
mess by a man never considered a huge puncher. In addition, Margarito
also started to bust up and bounce Paul Williams all over the place in
the later rounds of their 2007 contest.
At press time, Margaritos camp has declined to comment on the situation.
Mayweather Speaks on Pacquiao, Hatton, De La Hoya, Jones, and Ali
Former
pound for pound #1 Floyd Mayweather may be retired, but that hasnt
stopped Money May from voicing his opinion on todays boxing scene.
In
a call-in interview with Sports Rage Radio, Mayweather first addressed
his successor, current pound for pound #1 Manny Pacquiao.
Congratulations
to Manny Pacquiao if thats what they feel. I think Pacquiao is a good
fighter and take nothing away from him, Mayweather stated. But all
you gotta do is Youtube it. Hes been knocked out in the first round
before. 3 or 4 years ago he got outboxed by a washed up Erik Morales. I
answered your question right there. And he fought one of the Marquez
brothers, knocked him down 3 times in the 1st round and
still got a draw so we know he got outboxed in that one. And then he
fought him again and won by one point. Me, Ive dominated everyone
theyve put in front of me for many years I left the sport at the top.
I came in the sport like any ordinary fighter and fought my way to the
top.
Regarding his last opponent Ricky Hatton, Mayweather argues that the 140 pound champ has since become shot.
When
Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao fight, if Pacquiao wins I wouldnt be
surprised, Mayweather explained. I took everything out of Ricky
Hatton. He had hard fights with Kostya Tszyu, Mayweather, [and] Vince
Phillips. Thats wear and tear on your body. His last hurrah is when he
met me.
Dismissive
of the recent adulation bestowed on Pacquiao for his easy win over
Oscar De La Hoya, Mayweather argued that he faced a greater challenge
facing the Golden Boy at 154 pounds.
Just
like with Oscar de la Hoya. [He] choose my gloves; have you ever heard
a fighter choosing another fighters gloves? Theyre always trying to
put me in a no win situation, he revealed. Not only did I beat this
guy hands down, he couldnt even touch me. You let us meet at 147 with
some 8 ounce gloves. The gloves they gave me were pillows.
Unrepentant
of his claim of being the greatest fighter of all time, Mayweather then
placed his accomplishments against two of the most revered fighters in
boxing history.
God
blessed Sugar Ray Robinson [and] Muhammad Ali but name one fighter who
was in the sport of boxing for 11 years, a world champion for 10 years
and won 6 titles in 5 different weight classes and won the official
belt, Mayweather declared. Stats dont lie. Ali is like a Barack
[Obama]; he stood for something in his generation. If I was in that
time, remained undefeated and accomplished back then what Ive done
now, Id probably be the president of the United States.
The
truth is Oscar De La Hoyas opponents were handpicked. Absolutely he
was a good fighter, [but] he got to where he got to with a lot of money
put behind him. Manny Pacquiao is a good fighter but do your homework
on him. How can he be pound for pound one of the best if he got
outboxed 4 years ago by Erik Morales? Roy Jones opponents were
handpicked. Roy Jones is no different from Muhammad Ali. Work his legs.
Their legs were their defense. Once you take away their legs and they
become sitting ducks, you see what happens.
As
we can see, Mayweathers mouth is still in its prime. Mayweather has
already started loose preliminary talks with Pacquiaos people. Well
see if he has any interest in Mosley in light of Shanes career-best
performance last night.
Throwback Fighter of the Week: Jose Torres (1936-2009)
Puerto Rican light-heavyweight Jose Torres was among the finest boxers to emerge in the 1960s.
Starting
as a professional in 1958, he quickly racked up an impressive record of
26-0-1, the only blemish, a draw with future champion Benny Paret.
However, Torres would then suffer his only knockout loss to experienced
veteran Florentino Fernandez in 1963.
Torres
refocused in training, and went undefeated in his next eight bouts to
earn a title shot in 1965 against Willie Pastrano. With concussive
power in his fast, compact hooks and steady pressure, Torres broke down
Pastrano in route to a ninth round TKO.
Torres
went on the make three defenses before losing the belt by unanimous
decision to legend Dick Tiger in 1966. The immediate rematch saw Tiger
again emerge victorious, this time by a controversial split decision in
1967. The verdict was so unpopular that a riot followed at Madison
Square Garden, resulting in hordes of New York City police being called
in to control the situation.
Torres would fight two more times, both knockout wins, before retiring in 1969.
In
retirement, Torres remained active. He served as the New York State
Athletic Commission Commissioner from 1984-1988. He authored well known
books on his friends Mike Tyson (Fire and Fear) and Muhammad Ali (Sting Like a Bee). Torres also served as WBO president from 1990-1995.
He was working on a new book when he died on January 19, 2009 of a heart attack at the age of 72.
Jose Torres is enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame with a final record of 41-3-1, 29 KOs.

“Criminology 2”
“All The Above”
Undeterred by a previous lawsuit dismissal, Hip-Hop entrepreneur Ronald Bookman is again pursuing legal action against Rap-A-Lot CEO J Prince for an alleged 2007 assault and extortion plot.
In the new lawsuit filed on Monday (January 26), Bookman claims that J Prince, real name James Prince, sought to coerce majority ownership of the plaintiff’s Studio 7303, a Houston-based recording house.
According to Bookman, the dispute was over an alleged 2005 agreement to have Rap-A-Lot member Bun B to collaborate with Bookman’s 7303 recording artist Javon “JV” Daniels.
In addition, the plaintiff alleges that J Prince promised to have Bun record his debut album Trill at Bookman’s studio and split the album’s profits.
Later, Bookman claims Prince reneged and blocked his company from securing a distribution deal with Warner Bros. by refusing to clear the Bun B guest spot.
In April 2007, Bookman first sued J Prince for $10 million dollars, accusing the Rap-A-Lot founder and seven associates of mercilessly assaulting him at a January 2007 contract negotiation meeting.
This meeting was allegedly arranged by Prince to settle their business disagreements. In that lawsuit, Bookman claimed to have suffered head trauma, a broken nose, and a damaged eye.
Last June, prosecutors threw out criminal charges against J Prince after a preliminary investigation damaged Bookman’s credibility.
“I guess this a new season where drug dealing rats and parasite lawyers are out to extort me,” Prince stated at the time of the case dismissal. “If anyone with good sense would pull this guy Ronnie Bookman’s record, they would see how bad his credibility stinks.”
Under the new lawsuit, J Prince faces charges of breach of contract, battery, unfair competition, conspiracy, unjust enrichment, and exemplary damages.
At press time, the Rap-A-Lot founder could not be reached for comment.
Here we go again. Remember the last sip of hot chocolate and how it taste so much better than what came before it? Remember the first time you bussed? No matter how many times you get off afterward, nothing really compares to the first. So here we have the first salvo from Cuban Linx 2, not so imaginatively named “Criminology 2.” One of the top 10 albums of all time, no matter what region or what preference you have in Hip-Hop, the purple tape is all but unassailable. To Raekwon the Chef, masterpiece maker on extended hiatus, comes the unenviable task of reproducing the recipe that gave us the great work. “Criminolgy,” with the off-balance keys, the wobbly drum pattern formation, and the Scarface sample was one of the hardest singles every released, and one of the key pace setting tracks on OB4CL. Partner-in-Rhyme Ghostface Killah had come into his own riding shotgun and this was his moment of arrival. His hard spitting intro loaded the bases for Raekwon to bring the track home.On this joint the order is reversed. Similar to the “Can it Be (Rmx)” They’ve preserved the spirit of the original by flipping the same sample in different parts, but taken the song stylistically in a different direction. While the results are up to discussioin, in my opinion it doesn’t capture the same sense of urgency as the original. However these two are reunited and it sounds so good that if you hadn’t heard the original, you’d probably be ape s**t.No more from me, I think it’s fire, just not as good as the first nut. Criminology 2. Politic Ditto. Vote below. Peace

Monie Love speaks on making “Monie In The Middle”
The week is only halfway over, but it’s already been a big one career-wise for rapper/producer Ron Browz.
The latest artist to find success with the autotune phenomenon, Browz has topped a Billboard chart for the first time in his career as a rapper.
“Pop Champagne,” the infectious urban-pop hit that is set to appear on both Browz’ Ether Boy/Universal Motown debut, and Jim Jones’ Columbia Records debut Pray IV Reign, entered the #1 position on Billboard’s Urban Mainstream chart.
The song, released September 4, has also charted at the #3 position on the Top 40 Rhythm Monitor, which, like the Urban Mainstream chart, monitors a song’s success at radio.
In addition, the Juelz Santana-assisted “Champagne” is currently #3 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart, the #4 Hot Hip-Hop/R&B Song, and #11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
To top off his success on the charts, Browz, a Harlem native, has been selected as the feature performer to lead the 75th Anniversary celebration of the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night.
Tickets for the event, set to take place tonight (January 28) went on sale Tuesday (January 27), with the first 75 tickets sold for $7.50.
Despite being a segregated venue when it was first opened in 1914, the Apollo Theater grew to become an important part of urban music history.
One of the first winners of the ‘Amateur Nite Hour’ competition when it started as a radio show in 1934 was none other than Jazz great Ella Fitzgerald, who was 17 at the time.
Since then, the Amateur Night competition has seen artists from Stevie Wonder to the late James Brown to the Jackson 5, Luther Vandross, Lauryn Hill and many more testing their skills in front of a live audience, to varying degrees of success.
The 75th Anniversary celebration will continue with a year-long series of exhibits, open houses, special events and performances.
In April 2010, The Smithsonian Institute will collaborate with the Apollo to kick-off a touring exhibition titled “Jazz, Jump and Jive: The Apollo Theater and American Entertainment.”
