Ed Gordon: Daddy’s Little Girl – The Special Bond of Fathers and Daughters

I’m sure you heard of the saying “daddy’s little girl,” that

is the common phrase used to express the connection that most fathers and

daughters share. For this National Black Family Month, what better way to

celebrate then to discuss the importance of this special bond?

Little girls are important. They’re future wives and

mothers – two very important roles in every family. Many women look to their

fathers as the guide to how they should be treated by men.

Fathers can help build your confidence, often tell you

you’re beautiful and give you the mind set that you are a princess. Simple phrases

and signs of affection can ultimately make a difference in a budding girl’s

life.

As a young woman, I can attest to how important it is to

have a father in your life. Since I was a little girl, my father had a great occupation

out of the country, which kept him far from our family. I was usually the first

one crying – it was always rough to see my dad go off, because I knew that I

wouldn’t see him from quite some time. I know it was hard for him as well, but

at the same time, this is what he needed to do to take care of his family.

Through his actions, he taught me the proper necessities,

which included courage and believing in all my dreams. As I’ve grown into a

woman, I see many of the great qualities he has, manifesting inside of me. I do

not know what it feels like not to have a father, but there are way too many

women that do.

We got a chance to talk to award-winning television

journalist Ed Gordon, the host of the nationally syndicated show Our World with Black Enterprise. We

spoke about his important project, the release of his new book, and the

importance of the father-daughter relationship.

AllHipHop.com: Tell us about this new project your working

on, Daddy’s Promise.

Ed Gordon: It’s a national initiative that celebrates the

special relationship between and the importance of the father-daughter

relationship. It really stems from an article I did which appeared in Essence Magazine. I wrote about the

relationship that I have with my daughter Taylor, and the response I received

from the article was really overwhelming. So much so, that I wanted to do

something else, so we created this initiative.

AllHipHip.com: Can you explain the type of responses you received

from the article?

Ed Gordon: Well, I knew that Essence was like the bible for Black women, so I knew that it would

be seen by many people. The amount and various people that came up to me and

said “oh my god I saw the article and it really touched me or it reminded me of

the relationship that I have with my father.”

One woman, when Taylor and I were out shopping for a dress, literally

ran across the floor screaming. She said, “I read your article and often I read

articles in magazines and I wonder if people are talking about stories that may

not be true, it’s so good to see you guys.” So once I saw that kind of response,

I felt that I needed to do a little bit more.

AllHipHip.com: You recently launched a national outreach

campaign at the100 Black Men of America’s annual Conference. Can you tell us

about that?

Ed Gordon: Yes, that’s where we made the official

announcement in the sense of the event that we held. We had a panel which included

Judge Glenda Hatchett, whose father passed away, but she had a fantastic

relationship with him and she constantly talks about the difference he made in

her life. Will Downing was on the panel, he wrote a song a couple of years ago

that appeared on his album Emotions, it’s

called “Beautiful to Me.”

It was dedicated to his daughter, and he’s allowing us to use it as our theme

song.

Roland Martin, a CNN journalist, and George Curry, also a journalist,

were the four panelists. We had a very candid discussion with the audience

about this relationship, about the Black family and what we have to do. It was

a wonderful kick off for us.

AllHipHop.com: Now what is the exact plan of Daddy’s

Promise?

Ed Gordon: Well we have a number of plans in terms of what

we hope to do with our partner 100 Black Men, our sponsors the Ford Motor

Company and Bounty; we are going to be doing great things through media

projects and events. The first thing I must say, we really need to awaken

people of the importance of this relationship.

AllHipHop.com: Presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama

also mentioned something about the Black fathers…

Ed Gordon: Yes, on Father’s Day, it’s truly something that

needs to be addressed in our community. We hear about fathers who aren’t there,

who aren’t doing the right thing… this father-daughter relationship is a touchy

situation. I always knew there were a lot of men out there doing the right

thing, but it never got attention. We are never shown those images and they never

were saluted. So we’ll deal with those that aren’t and we want to salute those are,

and that’s the first thing.

AllHipHip.com: I’m really close to my father as well, and I

do notice different things in some women that do not have their fathers around.

What are some things that you have noticed or things that some people have told

you about?

Ed Gordon: Sometimes you see women who haven’t had

relationships with their fathers having difficulty in dealing with men, and

they may have a chip on their shoulder with men in general. Many women, and

many accomplished women who’ve gone on to have wonderful careers and doing well

in college, have said to me, “You know I feel a void in my life because I did

not have a male presence. I don’t know if this is how a man should treat me

because I have nothing to see and compare it to.”

You hear this all the time, whether its a single mother

living in the projects with three kids or more accomplished ones who have a

great professional career, but a poor private life because she made bad choices

with men. A lot of that stems from the idea that daddy wasn’t around, so we have

to understand the importance of being in these young ladies’ lives. One of the

things that we are going to try and do, for many of the young ladies that do

not have fathers in their lives, is partner them up with men that have great

relationships with their daughters.

AllHipHip.com: That is a beautiful thing! Can you tell us

about the website that you launched with this initiative?

Ed Gordon: It’s www.daddyspromise.com.

On the website we have a national photo album of 300 or more photos, its fun to

see the beautiful pictures that people are submitting. We have celebrities

including Beyoncé and Solange Knowles with [their] father, and a beautiful

picture of Ludacris and his daughter. Its one of those things, this is a

personal way to say to people, “Hey you know we’re out here, and here are the

Black men we’re getting ready to stand up to the world.”

AllHipHip.com: You also have a book coming out titled Daddy’s Promise; can you talk a little

bit about that?

Ed Gordon: Yes, were shooting for Father’s Day of ‘09, that’s

when we hope that this book will be out. I’m in the midst of doing interviews

for it right now, we hope that by then everything would have been in full swing

for a year. In the book I’ll be talking to a number of Hip-Hop artists in terms

of this whole question of misogynistic lyrics or images, how that’s affecting,

where we draw the line and what we have to start doing.

AllHipHip.com: I know that I may be thinking far ahead into

the future, but do you think this might be the beginning of something that

could potentially include mothers and sons?

Ed Gordon: Right now this is my avenue, fathers and

daughters. If someone else comes up with that I would certainly love to be in

their corner to help and assist them in anyway.

AllHipHip.com: Finally, can you tell us one thing that you

try to tell your daughter, one thing you try to instill in her?

Ed Gordon: You know, the one thing that I’m trying to make

her understand is that you get your confidence from you! You don’t get it from

anybody else, and you see this lot in girls. Often I think women, no matter how

accomplished, need that signal that a man has to validate you and “ok” things

for you, no matter who you are.

But I try to tell her, “As accomplished,

successful, smart and right on as you believe you are, if you believe, all of

those things will occur – and you don’t need a man, or anyone else for that

matter, to get you there. Daddy and mommy are trying to give you the tools, but at

the end of the day it’s up to you.” I don’t have lack of much self

confidence – I’m hoping that I can instill a little bit of that in her, and then

she’ll be able to find her way and know herself as a person.

Princess, Diamond Clash; Princess Seeks Solo Deal

Warner Brothers recording artist Princess may have a new label home when she releases her forthcoming solo debut, AllHipHop.com has learned.

While she remains signed to the label, which she joined as a member of the group Crime Mob, both parties have reached an agreement allowing the Atlanta native to explore her options.

“They gave me permission to shop around for another solo deal,” Princess told AllHipHop.com. “They still want the specifics on what another label is offering to see if they can match it. If not, they’ll go ahead and release me, and we’ll have to work out royalty splits and points on the album. And as long as the business is handled and I’m satisfied with what I’m getting, then we can move forward.”

With the release of her solo project, the 21-year-old rapper/songwriter hopes to deliver a variety of content she feels is especially needed in the world of female rappers.

Though Princess has no intention on distancing herself from her previous body of work, a newfound sense of maturity and artistic development has lead her to work towards creating a balanced album that will give fans an opportunity to get to know her as a soloist.

She also feels a responsibility to create relatable music.

“I’ve grown [and] it’s more that I can talk about,” she explained. “Subjects that, I’m sure, females want to hear, instead of all the materialistic things. It’s more than that. It’s more than money…when you only make that type of music, really you’re being selfish. Your fans [may not] have any of that.”

As she continues to perfect her craft, she is also strengthening her relationships with heavyweights like Polow Da Don and “A Milli” producer Bangladesh. Princess’s revelations about her new solo project came shortly after a heated exchange with former friend and band mate Diamond, who left the group amid much fanfare in December.

While the two ladies have crossed paths before, their encounter during a private event in Atlanta last night [July 28], revealed a level of tension and animosity they have never displayed in public.

According to Princess, the argument stemmed from Diamond’s disapproval of a promoter’s use of a picture of Crime Mob in better times, to promote a performance and appearance by Princess alone.

Their exchange quickly escalated to personal verbal attacks, only to be ended when a photographer suggested they settle their differences with a freestyle battle.

While Princess was up to the challenge, Diamond was swiftly ushered away by her handlers.

Despite the initial disappointment and feelings of betrayal she felt after parting ways on such bitter terms with Diamond, just as the two were preparing to venture off from the men of Crime Mob, Princess maintains she has no regrets.

“I look at it as a blessing,” Princess told AllHipHop.com. “Because if everything went the way we thought it was supposed to go, I wouldn’t be as educated as I am now as far as the music industry and how it works.”

In addition to recording her debut, which should be in stores next summer, Princess is also honing her skills as an R&B songwriter, working with various artists, including former Rowdy Records artist Sammy.

Janelle Monae: Alice in Wondaland

“I really would prefer this side,” Janelle Monae coos. The Atlanta native is nothing but classy even as she instructs the AllHipHop staff to switch seats because like she said, she prefers her left side. The Bad Boy artist is thoughtful, and her outfit reflects her thoughtfulness as she switches seats and neatly places her hunting helmet on top of an antique suitcase. Her wardrobe today resembles that of a horse jockey.Posters bearing the words “Imagination Inspires Nations” sporadically cover the wall of her label’s artist lounge – spacious with a small square filled with furniture. The posters are neatly mounted, as if the slogan wasn’t enough resemblance of a political candidate’s headquarters. When you meet Janelle Monae, you’re meeting a hybrid of space cadet, the speech of a presidential candidate, and a new artist. Like her persona, her music ranges from that of futuristic R&B to sonically classic Soul, like her James Bond reminiscent song, “Sincerely, Jane.”Having catapulted into the mainstream by Big Boi of Outkast in the Got Purp? Compilation, it’s ironic she resembles the performing eccentricities of Andre 3000, or maybe not so ironic at all. Rocking pant suits, a bubble hairdo, with weird bowties, you can’t help but feel the kind of energy she added to the Idlewild soundtrack – a ‘30s singer in a James Brown silhouette. Just like her slogan says, Janelle Monae is preparing music lovers to use their imaginations.AllHipHop.com Alternatives: Do you categorize yourself as a Neo-Soul artist?Janelle Monae: No, I don’t believe in categories. I believe that people – who for some reason thought that they were smart and knew exactly what something belongs to – made up categories. I’m not excited about categories, so I can’t commit to that but if somebody calls me Neo Soul, if somebody calls me Rock, or if somebody calls me Purple, you know, I don’t get caught up in labels. You know, there is a quote by Andy Warhol, I’m a huge supporter of him and he always says, “Don’t label your art, don’t label yourself. You let everyone else categorize you and try to figure out what you are. While they are trying to figure it out, you continue to do more art.” AHHA: So, I heard that your record label, Wondaland, has offices that are interesting. Can you describe it?Janelle Monae: Wondaland is a very exciting place. It’s a magical place literally, you know who have grass, so we encourage people to take off their shoes and you could just graze through it with your feet. We also have floating bookshelves, we like to read a lot and we get inspired by just knowing that there is knowledge on the walls. It’s just a place you just have to visit. I won’t do it any [justice] by trying to describe it to you. It’s just place a for wonderful people who love art, people that laugh a lot and that believe that imagination inspires nations, so just really, really cool people. AHHA: Do you feel like including the Wondaland offices in one of your videos in the future?Janelle Monae: Well maybe; we’re very private. I love sharing, so if you were to come by, I will let you in cause I believe exposure is everything and hopefully you will be inspired by Wondaland. But I don’t know if I want to just put it all out on television. It’s a really sacred place, literally, it’s where we create music and where we create art. AHHA: How has it been working with Diddy? He gets artists from the ground up and it seems like you’re very sure of what you’re about. What has that relationship been like?Janelle Monae: Well I like to first start off by saying; you know I have a lot of respect for Sean Combs. I think he is an incredible guy, he has been in the music industry for a significant amount of time and he’s done some remarkable things, so it’s an honor to work with someone of this caliber. I’m also a perfectionist and I’m a businesswoman and so he respects that and he respects our company’s core values and we have strong responsibility to excellence all around from the music to whatever it is we’re doing, we’re going to do it with pride and confidence and we’re going to make sure we’re giving our all. With that said, our like minds are connected in that sense and he saw that vision, you know from going to my MySpace page and speaking with Big Boi.[Big Boi] actually introduced us first and you know just loving the vision that my company The Wondaland Art Society had, and for him, it was more so about giving back and letting this young group, you know, we’re “thrivals.” “Thrivals” are basically young people who take advantage of all the opportunities that their parents or parent didn’t get a chance to take advantage of so by [Diddy] just recognizing that we we’re trying to do something, you know, just remarkable and life changing and that we strongly believe in art and we strongly believe that it’s up to us to alter history. He saw those things, and he believed in it as it was and as it is, and his goal isn’t to try to change that because he loved it on first sight, which is a blessing. So it hasn’t been hard at all; I learned a lot and I’m still learning a lot from him. I’m just grateful that I can still be the strong businesswoman that I am as well as an artist in the environment that I’m in now. AHHA: Your style seems to be very much intertwined with the music… I‘ve never seen anyone wear that hat before. Janelle Monae: It was actually a gift from Moscow, Russia and they gave me this. It’s one of my favorites. AHHA: Has there been an outfit you’ve always wanted to wear?Janelle Monae: I’ve always wanted to be an equestrian rider, yes, I’ve always wanted to ride horses and I love their outfits so much. Oh my god, so whenever I’ve gone to Louisville, Kentucky and I went to one of the horse races and I met one of the jockeys and I was just like oh my gosh. I was so in awe of his outfit, and he was like my height too, and I was like I want that. But yeah, I just love classic clothes, things that are tailored, very simple. AHHA: You released Metropolis Suite 1. What everyone is calling an EP you’re viewing as “a suite.” Why divide up a song collection like that? Janelle Monae: Well you know we grow up, or we’re growing up in an iPod generation so everyone is picking their one, two, three, four songs from an album. [Well], not everybody, because I listen to albums, but I just felt like also because I have such a big conceptual album. You know the story is extremely life changing – at least it is for me – and I wanted to people to be able to follow along without feeling like they were overwhelmed or bombarded with too much music and too much of a story. So I decided that it was best to break up the album into suites and give them five or six tunes that I feel like they can handle right now…kind of like putting the consumer on a musical diet, if you will. AHHA: Did you record them in the bulk that you are releasing them? Janelle Monae: They were already recorded. It’s entitled The Chase, so you think of colors like reds and oranges, or you know. I don’t even want to say what I think, ‘cause I would love you to listen to it and let your imagination run wild. But yeah, each suite will have its own world, and it will give you a piece of what Metropolis is all about. AHHA: I read that it was the 1927 film, Metropolis, which is a silent film that inspired this collection of songs. You never really hear artists going back to the silent movie era. What was it about that movie that impacted you so much that you named your album after it?Janelle Monae: It was Fritz Lang a German expressionist, black and white silent film, and although it had come out in 1927 and it was silent it spoke out to me, it reminded me so much of the world that I grew up in; Kansas City, Kansas, Wyandotte County. [There] you have the “have-nots” and the “haves,” and there is this constant struggle between the two and there still is today, that’s going on as we speak but I thought that story was so compelling. When you have this woman, this, you know this robot, this free fighter who is trying to save the have-nots from the society of the haves who are just enslaving them and keeping them working, they can’t really follow their dreams.I just felt like that story was so compelling, and I could relate to it so much that I felt like it was important to give my interpretation of it. I love science fiction; I’m a huge sci-fi head and comic book gal. I love movies from Blade Runner to Gattaca and so I wanted to make it fun, for me, and those who love science fiction. I’m really fascinated, I respect the past but it’s all about the future for me because that’s one of the things I feel is my job – to help alter and you can only do that when you’re focused on the future.     AHHA: Talking about the future, looking at these posters, it’s like a presidential campaign. What is that all about?Janelle Monae: I strongly believe that imagination inspires nations, and it’s a campaign for freedom and it’s a campaign for fearlessness. It’s a campaign that’s really here to promote and empower, not just me, it’s not about me at all. It’s always about my supporters and people who are walking around just dead and just feeling constricted and not really able to truly be themselves. And for me I wanted to empower them and so this is what you have. AHHA: So, talking about that walking dead I really like the line in your song “Sincerely Jane” when you’re singing, “Are we really living or just walking dead?” When you sing it what do you imagine?Janelle Monae: Exactly what it says, you know there is a difference a huge difference between one who is here alive but are they living? You’re either living or you’re walking dead, and for me I grew up around a lot of people who are walking dead. My family some of my friends, coming from a small town like Kansas sometimes, people get very hopeless. They feel like they’re stuck and the people around them keep themselves stuck too. People make up all these rules that you have to abide by and when you’re in a small town, it’s hard to really be free without people whispering. For me that was true, and it hurts me every time I have a conversation with a family member. I’ll call home and they’re lost or they’re on drugs or just trying to find themselves and I purposefully call back so I could stay connected. I know that I have to as an artist, really, really make them proud and hopefully inspire them and let them know just because we come from an environment, we don’t have to be of that environment. Outlawz: Kick In The Door

It hasn’t been a smooth road for the Outlawz. Early in their career they lost Tupac Shakur, who was both their mentor and the founder of the Outlawz, and experienced the death of another member, Kadafi, the same year. Add in a lack of mainstream recognition with a revolving door of members and you the makings of a perennial underdog title.  However, being under-noticed in the rap game isn’t something that stunted the Outlawz’ reputation for delivering raw street music they call “ghetto gospel,” a term originated by their mentor. Nor, did it stop the members from working alongside big names in Hip-Hop and releasing several solo projects and mixtapes and earning a flock of devoted fans.Ready to ignite fire under the industry, EDI, Young Noble, Kastro and the newest member, Stormey, prepare for an August 5th release of their street LP, We Want In. Attempting to set the record straight, the last Outlawz standing EDI and Young Noble [minus Kastro] discuss their place in Hip-Hop, the Outlaw legacy, and what we want in really means. AllHipHop.com: People are talking about “We Want In” [co-directed by Young Noble], butthe album title seems more than just a title, it seems more like a statement.EDI: Well We Want In is a statement and basically it’s our way of speaking for the underground and all the cats that wanna get in this game, keep knocking on these doors and for whatever reason this whole Hip-Hop industry is like the cool kids in high school. If you ain’t dressing like the cool kids or if you ain’t doing what the cool kids is doing sometimes you get fronted on, you’re knocking on that door. It’s kinda cliquish in the Hip-Hop industry so when I was coming up with the hook and all that, I was just thinking like an underground, like what a n***a want to say to all the top n****s in the game that’s getting it. And in no way, shape or fashion are n****s trying to spark something where we dissing n****s and s**t and most of them n****s I named in the song are n****s I know personally and got a lot of love and respect for.  Young Noble: It’s like we want in basically. EDI had come up with the hook and everything and we was gonna drop a street album before we dropped the Ghetto Gospel album, which is our next album that we’re working on and it’s basically the concept you know we want in, we’re just about to get a little more aggressive. It feels as music we’re not really getting our just due or even had a fair shot. The streets been holdin’ us down for the longest, our peers, our rap comrades they always show us love and the utmost respect it’s more so the motherf***ers who’s in charge of cutting them checks really. AllHipHop.com: Within the record industry like you said y’all are recognized, but not as much with the bigger picture, what do you think is the cause of that?EDI: Again, I don’t want to make it sound like we’re knocking on somebody’s door begging to get in because we’ve been in and all through this industry. And so it’s not really we’re knocking to get in. It’s more like a metaphor like I said speaking for the underground but if it’s a personal thing about the Outlawz; I would have to say when my homeboy ‘Pac left he p##### a lot of people off and some of those people are still in a position of power where they can make a phone call and say not today… “The Outlawz what? Nah, we ain’t havin it”. AllHipHop.com: You guys have had a lot of solo projects and mixtapes. How hard was it or how easy was it to re-up again for this new album?Young Noble: It was really simple, we got like tons and tons of songs in the stash and we constantly working so it really wouldn’t take nothing but a few days to put an album together better than 90% of these albums that’s out. That’s just what we do. That’s what ‘Pac taught us, the work ethic. We gotta work at something. I got like a chest in my house full of tapes and s**t so it was really simple. Our last album that came out was in 2005, we’ve been dropping a lot of collaboration projects. So since ’05 we pretty much been dropping collaboration projects instead of Outlawz projects so it was just time for us to drop something.AllHipHop.com: Most groups seem to experience a lot of ups and downs with members leaving. As far as the consistency, last album was 2005 [Outlaw 4 Life: 2005 A.P.], what has kept you together to keep making music together in this industry?EDI: That’s a good question, ’cause a lot of times this industry is definitely good at breaking groups up. Our group, I wouldn’t even say was broken up by the industry, like certain members just decided to take different paths in their life, it didn’t really have nothing to do with music. The Outlawz, the group was really the young dudes, Outlawz Immortalz included Outlawz together along with Tupac, but Outlawz itself was the young dudes. It’s me, Kastro, Noble and our homeboy Stormey that’s the newest member of the Outlawz and us together we’re still doing our thing. AllHipHop.com: Where would you say in Hip-Hop do the Outlawz fit in, or do you feel you fit in?Young Noble:  I feel like we fit in where if you wanna hear some real music, inspiring thug s**t, this is what you come to. I’m telling you from what the perspective of the streets tell me all the years I’ve been doing this that’s what dudes hear from us when motherf***ers having them days and they need to feel inspired and they’re feeling like, “f**k life”, “f**k everything, “the bills is due,” “my baby mama trippin,” f***ers just need some inspiration to feel better about themself to get to the next day. They pop in ‘Pac and the Outlawz and this is from dudes sending letters to our P.O box, dudes locked up, doing life in prison, real n****s, like killers, n***as ain’t no groupie n****s, n****s is taking their time out to write us a letter to let us know how our music inspire them to be better men and just get ’em through the day. When I first started doing music I didn’t think people really listened and paid attention like that. I really really didn’t until n****s started giving the feedback like motherf***ers really look at us like that so I feel that’s our position in the Hip-Hop, if you wanna hear some real s**t, not no extra hype bulls**t, n****s on some rapper s**t, n****s that spit real s**t.

“They do specials on ‘Pac on whatever channels, they never call us. It’s just like all around the board forgetting about the Outlawz… The streets love us, wherever we go they f**k with us, coast to coast, state to state, overseas…” –Young Noble

AllHipHop.com: What would it take for the group to finally feel like they’ve gotten credit?Young Noble: I couldn’t even just say one thing, but it’s just all around the board. We’re starting to feel it. I’m starting to feel like I just heard the other day someone said you heard Jay-Z is shouting y’all out he was on the “A Milli” beat, Lil Wayne’s s**t and he was saying something, “bumping ‘Pac and the Outlawz,” like that s**t made me feel good. Jay-Z shouting us out right now, but it’s like I don’t know, we done been on over 60 million records, we never been on a major label, we never had no radio support, we never really had no video support. Like they do specials on ‘Pac on whatever channels, they never call us. It’s just like all around the board forgetting about the Outlawz. They must not know how much influence we got, how, because the streets love us, wherever we go they f**k with us, coast to coast, state to state, overseas they f**k with us. Talking about the corporate light just open up some doors we ain’t really had no doors open up for us for all the work we done put in for Hip-Hop and the losses we done took to be able to survive the storm and still be here and our music is better then it’s ever been as far as the Outlawz is concerned.EDI: To me it’s like the money has to match the respect. We got all the respect in the world honestly. In the industry and amongst our peers the respect is there. I don’t think we would of been able to record and do music with as many people outside of ‘Pac that we have done if the respect wasn’t there. N****s ain’t going around throwing anybody on  their records and we ain’t doing that neither so the respect is there. It’s just the paper ain’t matching the respect. We got a couple hundred million dollars worth of respect, but I don’t got a couple hundred million in the bank.

“We’re not ‘Pac and we’re not going to try to do our best ‘Pac edition, we’re the Outlawz and ‘Pac ain’t here, we gotta do us.” –E.D.I. Mean

AllHipHop.com: You’ve mentioned Tupac a few times, have you ever felt pressure because of the affiliation and with the comparisons from people?Young Noble: I think that the main thing is with that is sometimes we’ll put something up and the fans will f**k with it like damn these n****s is cold, they’re way better than when they was with ‘Pac. Then you got the other people who wanna hear the Outlawz from ’96. We ain’t the same as back then. How the f**k can we be the same? Listen to an Outlawz song and expect to hear Tupac on the motherf***er, hear ‘Pac on it without him being on it. It’s like ‘Pac ain’t here no more…Kadafi, our group was seven members we down to three. That’s like imagine Wu-Tang [Clan] still here 15 years from now and they only down to Ghosface, Raekwon and Method Man, like everybody dismembered and them three is the last Wu-Tang members together as Wu-Tang. Fifteen years from now they still here making probably better music than they did at this time, motherf***ers would be only hearing them from when it was all the members or whatever the case may be. Well this is life man, two n****s died, one n***a is a Muslim [Napoleon], he don’t even rap no more, one dude went solo [Hussein Fatal], it’s like this is the Outlawz that’s left, this is God’s plan, this is how it was meant to be, it sets up for the Outlawz left now, we can’t rewind time.I guess us being under him there’s always gonna be that comparison or whatever the case may be but we’re not ‘Pac, we don’t wanna be ‘Pac, we’re the Outlawz, that is what he always told us, You ain’t competing with nobody but y’allself.EDI: I definitely think that an easy argument for people to have that didn’t necessarily want to see the Outlawz be successful—Oh them n***as ain’t s**t without ‘Pac—is an easy one but I really feel like for the true fans and the real motherf***ers that’s really getting into this Hip-Hop music, you can’t go through our history and say we ain’t put it down for ourselves. It’s been 12 years since ‘Pac been gone and yeah he was the biggest rapper of his generation, and probably the biggest selling rapper of all time, but that alone can’t keep us in the game for 12 years. It was something else that kept us in the game besides the fact that we was associated with ‘Pac, so the pressure is there when it comes to the fact that people won’t listen to your music objectively without wanting to hear a ‘Pac verse or wanting us to talk about the same things ‘Pac talked about or wanting us to keep those same beefs that ‘Pac had when he left. That’s the pressure, but it’s not really pressure, it’s like come on man give us a break. We’re not ‘Pac and we’re not going to try to do our best ‘Pac edition, we’re the Outlawz and ‘Pac ain’t here, we gotta do us.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Ross Addresses “Rumors!” The Game’s New Hood Movie! No More Foxy Brown!

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

RICK ROSS AND FOXY ARE NO LONGER AN ITEM

You know, I knew this already, but the word is out. Rick Ross and Foxy Brown are OVER. You know, I thought they would at least make it until the end of the summer. Rick Ross recently stated “keep the rumors coming” so I guess I am. (But I’m not a hater. Ross is dope, especially the intro to his album.) Anyway, I heard the untimely ending of Roxy actually came around the BET Awards out in California. Apparently, Ross and Foxy were supposed to walk the red carpet. If they weren’t supposed to, we certainly expected it. Remember?

“They are in fact a couple. Rick Ross swept her off of her feet and this is going to [be] the next big hip-hop couple,” AllHipHop.com quoted of a source. “They both are in love.”

According to the source, Foxy is trying get the hell out of Brooklyn and move to Miami to be near to her baby and has already developed a good relationship with Rick’s fam. Marriage is the new single.

I heard all was good until the BET Awards and that Homewrecker Buckeey took that pic and video with Ross! And POOF…I heard it was over after that!

NOW…MORE ROSS RUMORS

You may have seeen this in the new, but Rick Ross had denied that he was a C.O. and you haters can just keep a-hating. Here are some of the quotes from Power 98.3 in Phoenix, Arizona.

“In the game we in, it’s real competitive. Competitors have to do what they have to do to eat. We making the best music. Y’all seen the BET Awards, y’all saw the magazine. We the biggest in the game, we the best in the game. Just keeping it real. And anytime somebody can attack my character, like I said, you get nothing from the Boss. I don’t give haters the pleasure.“

“When you get to my level, you’re a great conversation piece. I’m big on the blogs, I’m big on the magazines, and I appreciate that as an artist. That’s why I’m in the game. I got in this game to introduce people and to make great music. And that’s what it’s about.”

“Just keep the rumors coming. We gon’ keep the records coming, we gon’ keep the music coming. Like I said, I’m one of the realest sources of this real street music in this game. Straight out of Miami, straight out of M-I-Yayo. One of my closest homies was on America’s Most Wanted.”

Thoughts?

LIL MO PREGGERS?

Lil Mo refuses to put her personal life on hold! Rumor has it, she is about to drop another baby. There is no confirmation, but the singer has been shown sporting a bump right where a baby would normally linger. The Hip-Hop singer, real name Cynthia Loving, already has two daughters – Heaven Love’on Stone (born on August 19, 2002), and God’Iss Love Stone (born oon February 24, 2005). If she is with child, it would be her first one with present husband Philip Bryant, who is a gospel singer.

WHERE’S BUCK SHOT?

I’m sure Kidz In The Hall are mad at me, but I have a job to do there. Yesterday at Rocksteady, Buckshot was scheduled to perform. The whole Boot Camp came EXCEPT Buckshot, so in place of his performance, KRS-One did an impromptu cypher with Fat Joe, Craig G, Black Ice, The Artifacts (both), Lords of the Underground, Hakim from Channel Live, Steele from Smif n Wessun, and had Marley Marl and DJ Premier on stage. Also Ice-T made a surprise appearance with Coco on his arm. The point about Kidz? I wonder if Buck shot got caught up in that mess down in AZ? We’ll find out, won’t we?

JACKI-O: IT’S HARD OUT HERE FOR A FEMALE RAPPER

Whew. We all know we are in a recession for female rappers, but damn! Jacki-O has recently revealed that she was forced to give up her “nookie” in order for her to get a deal. “Everybody that signed [to her former label] had gotten their advance money, but when it came time for me to get my advance, I had to f*ck for my advance. It was ten stacks and I had to f*ck for it. So naturally it wasn’t something that I’m proud of doing. And I don’t advise any female to get into no business – be it music or whatever – and get exploited like that,” Jacki reportedly said.

Daaaaaaayum! She kept on…

“But I’m from the hood and if somebody offers you ten thousand dollars at one time to get out of the hood, and lets you go for your dream of doing music, you’re gonna run to that.”

What are your thoughts on these allegations?

My dude Da SouthsideWrecker just told me that Yung Berg did a remix with T-Pain and Shawnna! I heard Shawnie killed it with the rapid-fire flow. I heard Berg is dissing somebody. Also, I heard Berg is singing on his new CD on a song called “Outer Space.”

I don’t believe this, but somebody told me Kanye might have a baby on the way, by his ex-fiancée. I’ll wait for his blog to address this.

RANDOM QUOTES

Immortal Technique comments on Rick Ross (rhapsody):

“Just because you had a day job doesn’t mean that you weren’t living some sort of illegal life. There are criminals in college, on Wall Street, in government, on the police force, in law, and definitely in the music business, especially the underground. People are quick to judge and it puts [the judged] in an incredibly difficult position to justify a life they obviously no longer live when incriminating information surfaces.”

SHELZ RETURNS TO THE RUMORS!

The Art of Story Telling.

Well, it appears folk all over the place are jumping on the “let me air out a fake thug” bandwagon. The next victim…. Plies. It seems the investigative reporting branch over at DX has done some snooping and came up with, guess what? Nothing. Now I’m not into Plies so I don’t know what he kicks in his lyrics, but he must be telling that same ole warmed over big time thug tale. He speaks of arrests and jail cells and yard stuff, right? I guess he must have read about it because it seems he was never arrested until after some of those lyrics were written. Ya know, I find it amusing that any of this shocks anyone. If you did do all this illegal stuff and got arrested for it, there would be a record of it. And if you didn’t get arrested, you wouldn’t be blabbin’ about it on a CD. At least not until the statute of limitations ran out. I’m really going to need folks to get over it and accept these performers and their back stories for what they are – entertainment.

The Art of Story Telling…Part II

For some strange reason this whole “Chris Stokes poked me” story being re-kindled a couple months ago has sparked some marriage proposals. First it was Raz-B, formerly of B2K. That story dropped and he immediately found a wife. Well the wives keep a-coming. Now it’s Marques Houston. Yes, he is allegedly engaged to be married. And yes, both young men are engaged to women. I don’t know if this is some “Look at me. I’m manly” publicity stunt or not, but marriage is rather sacred so I hope not.

The Art of Story Telling…Part III

Listen to this. An aging single rap star decides he needs a significant other and settles on VH1 as a vehicle to find her. Sound familiar? Well, with Flava Flav deciding he was tired of having a harem of girls fighting for him and a free grill, someone had to take over. In steps Uncle Luke. Sometime in the next week or so, we should start seeing the former 2-Live Crew frontman searching for love in all the wrong places. I swear I can’t remember the last time I actually saw a music video on VH1.

And Finally Just a Piece of Art….

Nelly has been tapped by Sean John underwear to be there latest spokesmodel person or whatever they call them. I say the title doesn’t really matter, nor does what I type. A picture is worth a thousand words. (illseed note: ladies, be thankful! LTbrown, this means you!)

A VIEW ON LADY DRAMA!

You know, I love my girl Drama, but I have to admit, her comments on Raven Symone yesterday startled me a bit. I didn’t cut it out, because that’s how she feels and I think she was just clowning. Here is what my homey Jye said. (He also contributes to the rumors here and there.) Also, click here to read AllHipHop’s recent interview on Raven!

Illseed,

What’s good fam? listen, I was checking out Lady Drama’s joints on AHH, and she came down hard on Raven Symone. She needs to fall back on that though because check it, Raven ain’t no push over, when you’re worth $400 Million you don’t have to worry about lack of sales of your record. S**t if she wanted to recoop from poor sales she has enough dough to start her own label. I think we need to give her props for making wise business decisions and keeping her nose clean, meaning staying outta the media’s negative s### radar. It’s crazy, $400 million at 21!!! She should blow everyone’s mind and drop a hot 16 over that A Milli beat….lol.

Jye

[Illseed note: no hate to Lady Drama though. That’s the homey.]

Rick Ross Addresses C.O. Allegations

Hip-Hop star Rick Ross has hit back at recent reports surrounding his previous employment with the Florida Department of Corrections.

During an interview on Friday (July 25), Ross addressed the latest developments as “rumors” and maintained that he is a victim of a massive smear campaign.

Speaking to Phoenix, Arizona Hip-Hop station Power 98.3 (KKFR-FM), he responded to the question of his past employment by simply saying “Don’t believe the hype.”

“In the game we in, it’s real competitive,” Ross told Power 98.3 FM. “Competitors have to do what they have to do to eat. We making the best music. Y’all seen the BET Awards, y’all saw the magazine. We the biggest in the game, we the best in the game. Just keeping it real. And anytime somebody can attack my character, like I said, you get nothing from the Boss. I don’t give haters the pleasure.“

In video footage of the interview, which took place during a fan meet-and-greet at the Virgin MegaStore at the Arizona Mills Mall, Ross is seen dancing and interacting with fans, apparently undaunted by the continuing appearance of “evidence” of his two-year stint as a Correctional Officer at the South Florida Reception Center in Miami-Dade County.

Ross said he views the discussions the documents have created among his fans, foes and colleagues alike as part of in the rap game.

“When you get to my level, you’re a great conversation piece,” Rick Ross calmly explained. “I’m big on the blogs, I’m big on the magazines, and I appreciate that as an artist. That’s why I’m in the game. I got in this game to introduce people and to make great music. And that’s what it’s about.

“Just keep the rumors coming,” added Ross, who’s sophomore album Trilla debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart.

“We gon’ keep the records coming, we gon’ keep the music coming. Like I said, I’m one of the realest sources of this real street music in this game. Straight out of Miami, straight out of M-I-Yayo. One of my closest homies was on America’s Most Wanted

Ross also revealed that he and Foxy Brown were no longer an item.

Foxy Brown’s Lawyer Hits Back At Book Lawsuit

Less than a week after being hit with a new lawsuit from New York-based publisher Simon and Schuster, an attorney for rap diva Foxy Brown is speaking out on her client’s latest legal situation.

The suit, which was filed Thursday (July 24) in New York State Supreme Court, stems from a book deal made with Brown to write her autobiography.

The rapper, born Inga Marchand, received a $75,000 advance from Simon and Schuster in 2005 to pen the book, which was tentatively titled Broken Silence.

Despite claims by the publisher that Brown reneged on the deal, the rapper’s attorney, Laura Dilimetin, says Simon and Schuster allowed to her client to put the project on hold after Brown’s “health became a priority” when she was diagnosed with sudden severe hearing loss that same year.

“With Simon and Schuster’s blessings, Foxy Brown underwent extensive surgical procedures and a lengthy recovery time, fighting to restore her hearing,” Dilimetin told AllHipHop.com in a statement.

It was at this point – after Brown completed rehabilitation to restore her hearing loss – that “Simon and Schuster decided not to go forward with the project,” Dilimetin claimed.

“Many attempts were made by Foxy Brown’s agents to resurrect the deal, to no avail,” she added.

The hearing loss wasn’t the only thing preventing Brown from promoting her autobiography.

The entertainer was sentenced in 2007 for various violations of her probation.

Marchand was released in April after serving eight months of a year-long sentence.

“I find it suspect that after all of these years of silence, Simon and Shuster pick now to bring this meritless action when they were the ones to halt the project,” Dilimetin told AllHipHop.com.

News of the lawsuit hasn’t soured other publishers from offering to negotiate a new book deal with Brown, Dilimetin added.

While the situation seems tense between Brown and Simon and Schuster, Dilimetin shared that the rapper would ” love to continue with Simon and Schuster and welcomes talks to continue to solidify a deal.”

Brown is the second rapper who has butted heads with Simon and Schuster.

The publisher is also suing former Junior Mafia member Lil Kim, who failed to complete a novel after receiving a $40,000 advance in 2003.

The rapper’s project was supposed to be finished in 2004.

Aesop Rock Designs Custom adidas Sneaker

Underground MC Aesop Rock has become the third in a select group of avant-garde visual artists to create a special edition adidas classic for lifestyle brand Upper Playground.

The new Aesop Rock adidas Originals sneaker, a customized take on the Stan Smith shoe, will be made available at 8pm PST on Thursday (July31) online.

According to Aesop, the concept for the new design borrows from the cover of his fifth full-length album, 2007’s None Shall Pass, which he designed with renowned painter Jeremy Fish, with whom he’s worked on previous projects as well.

“The faded green and gold colors have a strange eerie-meets-regal vibe that I liked when designing the art for last year’s album,” explained the Long Island native. “I wanted to continue that color scheme, and keep it pretty simple. I didn’t want anything too intrusive. Basically I just wanted something that I’d rock, and my mother might even wear them.”

Upper Playground’s adidas Originals collection was launched on July 17, with the release of a special edition Centennial Lo sneaker designed by Brazilian fine artist Herbert Baglione.

The following Thursday, July 24th, came an original Stan Smith shoe courtesy of muralist and graphic artist David Choe, who’s signature artwork has graced clothing, comic books, movie posters and album covers.

Only 500 pairs of each design was created, available at the price of $150.00 per pair. Each customer is limited to only two pairs of the intended collectors items.

Knockout Nation: Margarito Breaks Cotto – Mayweather or De La Hoya Next? Lacy Retires, Judah-Clottey

There were many questions as Antonio Margarito and

Miguel Cotto made their way to the ring on Saturday July 26. Which force was

stronger, Cotto’s higher skill or Margarito’s relentless pressure? Was it

Antonio’s size or Miguel’s ability to fight off the backfoot? In the end, it

was Margarito who used all his tools to systemically break down Cotto for a

decisive and dramatic stoppage in the 11th round.

As many predicted, Cotto came out in round one

boxing well of the backfoot. Using quick lateral movement, the WBA champion

bounced quick hook flurries off Margarito’s head. The challenger was showing

cautious respect early, and Cotto used that and his quickness to double up left

hooks to Antonio’s head along with a hard straight right. Still, Margarito

showed signs of things to come by landing two left uppercuts.

Round two saw the Tijuana Tornado pick up the

pace. He walked through hook bombs to corner Cotto and strafe him with

uppercuts and hooks to the body. Seeking to gain space and respect, Cotto

immediately fired back with hooks and uppercuts of his own to the head before

backpedaling straight into a long right from Antonio. Forced to fight, Cotto cracked a hard left hook off Margarito’s head, who still pressed forward. He repeated the feat again to close out the round. Cotto paid a price for his stand, returning to his corner with a bloody nose and a cut on his left eyelid.

In round three Cotto went back to using his

superior lateral movement to counter off the ropes with hooks and then move

away. However, Margarito continued pressing, this time behind the jab to punish

Cotto against the ropes with body shots. While the punches weren’t landed flush

and flashy like Cotto’s, the challenger’s punches downstairs were landing with

heavy authority. Possibly seeking to buy time, Cotto complained twice of low

blows from Margarito, which resulted in a warning from referee Kenny Bayless.

Rounds four and five saw much of the same pattern.

Early on Cotto outboxed Margarito safely and scored heavy with clean counters

hooks to the head from outside.  In the

fifth, Margarito caught Cotto with an overhand right, causing the Puerto Rican

star to retaliate with an uppercut. Not done, he followed up with a short

flurry before landing a left hook and another snapping uppercut. Showing good

defense, Cotto picked off two hard shots from Margarito against the ropes

before twisting his body to dodge three successive overhand shots to conclude

the fifth.

Margarito’s corner chastised him for waiting too

much, and implored him to set up his shots better and not focus on the one

knockout punch. Heeding those words, the challenger started the

sixth more composed, even after getting caught early with a right-left hook combo

to the head. Bullying Cotto to the ropes, Margarito exclusively worked the body

and particularly scored with a painful left hook that was ignored by the HBO

team. Here, the effect the punches were having of each fighter became more

pronounced. Margarito remained unfazed while Cotto’s face started to show

discouragement as he continued trying to fend off the unwavering body attack.

Margarito smelled blood and came on even stronger in round seven. Cotto’s movement began to labor, and Magarito continued his excellent hook body attack against the ropes. Now Cotto’s hands began to drop, which allowed the challenger to badly hurt the WBA champion with three left and one right uppercut.

Cotto attempted to fight off his attacker like he

did so many times before against the likes of Ricardo Torres and Zab Judah, but

Margarito would not move and punished Cotto with more uppercuts and hooks to

the body. Switching southpaw, clinching and throwing sporadic combos saved

Miguel from tasting the canvas as the round ended.

Now bleeding from the nose and mouth, Cotto

started the eighth by boxing and staying away from Antonio’s power. With his

lateral movement returning, Cotto was very successful and snapped Margarito’s

head back with counters between Margarito’s punches. In a psychological tactic,

Margarito would gingerly trot towards Cotto after getting hit to emphasize he

wasn’t being hurt.

In round nine Margarito was more than happy to

trade punches, but it was Cotto who did his best to retreat and try to create

space. Tired, Cotto began going straight back allowing the Tijauna Tornado to

do more great work in the corners to Miguel’s body and head. Now, the champion

was noticeably being moved physically by the damage of punches. Sensing Cotto

was weakening, Margarito’s corner stressed to him to pick up the speed of his

punches going into the championship rounds.

At the start of round ten Cotto looked to fight in

spurts and run out the clock, with Margarito in hot pursuit. For the majority

of the round, Cotto successfully maintained distance at mid-range to land

thudding combinations to the head of Margarito. But the challenger’s constant pressure again gave dividends at the :11 second mark when a flurry of hooks and

uppercuts again badly hurt Cotto. Only a wise clinch and the time running out

saved the champion from being stopped.

Now debilitated to the point where he could no

longer move, Cotto began making his last stand in the eleventh with powerful

straight rights and left hooks that Margarito barely blinked at. The challenger

continued his non-stop punching and caught Cotto with a left and right uppercut

causing him to take a knee with 1:39 remaining.

An absolute bloody mess, Cotto bravely rose

immediately to take an eight count and face his fate. He landed the best hooks

he could muster, and clinched when he saw once again they had no effect. Completely spent, he backed up from the pursuing Magarito and took another knee before getting hit again, prompting his corner to throw in the towel with :55 seconds remaining.

Antonio Margarito proved many wrong, including

myself, who thought Cotto could weather the late storm to eek out a decision.

This was a great win for Antonio, who slowly broke down the former champion and

showed that his chin is absolute granite. Nothing Cotto threw all night hurt

him.

Margarito is already being praised on message boards for his constant pressure and non-stop punching, but he should also get credit for his great defense to the body. Cotto, a great body puncher, could find no openings to Margarito’s torso due to the new champ’s elbows being tucked

tightly and his long arms. Occasionally in the fight you saw Cotto pushed

forward looking for the body shot only to realize there weren’t any openings.

In the post-fight interview, Margarito called out

Oscar De La Hoya, as everyone does. While it would be a great fight, I doubt

Oscar would want such a taxing fight to end his career, especially since the

possibly of a loss would be very high. Still, the Golden Boy has taken on most

of the biggest challenges available to him, so it remains to be seen.

Years ago, Floyd Mayweather bluntly told Margarito

he was making smart decisions, and that the Mexican vet should follow his lead.

He also promised that if Margarito kept winning he would get a shot as the

potential fight between them would be bigger down the road.

What Floyd said made sense, but the only problem

now is that Money May is retired. Could the buzz from Margarito’s performance

be enough to entice Mayweather out of retirement? We’ll have to wait until the

PPV numbers come back.

And let’s not forget Paul Williams, who recently

regained his WBO title and outpointed Margarito last year. An obvious

unification bout should be a top agenda for both their promoters.

As for Miguel Cotto, let’s not start with the

cries of overrated and that he quit. The man fought his heart out to the best

of his boxing ability, offensively and defensively. He deserves a lot of

respect for his effort. However, the HBO team went overboard by acting is if a

funeral had just occurred. The shots of Cotto’s crying wife and son, along with

the ending montage and Jim Lampley holding back tears was a little much.

Lacy

Escapes with Decision, Decides to Retire

Last Wednesday July 23 former champion Jeff Lacy

returned for what was supposed to be an exhibition bout against journeyman

Epifanio Mendoza. Instead, the fight was a life and death war with Lacy nearly

being KO’d in the second and eighth rounds despite scoring a knockdown in the fourth.

After escaping with an unpopular majority decision, Lacy announced his

retirement due to what he considers unfair terms in a potential fight with

Jermain Taylor. For his last fight, Lacy received a purse of $550,000. For the

proposed Taylor bout, he was offered $500,000.

“What do I look like fighting a fight of that

caliber for $500,000 when I have more to risk that anything,” Lacy fumed to the

Tampa Tribune. “I feel like Taylor needs me more than I need him and what do I look like fighting that fight for $500,000 and risking my life in there like I did Wednesday night because the referee is not on top of this guy hitting me in the back of the head.”

It seems Lacy forgot to mention that it was more

so the repeated uppercuts on the inside over ten rounds that really hurt him in

that bout. Watching that fight, it’s clear the combination of the torn rotator

cuff on his left arm, the inactivity, and the Calzaghe beating have robbed the

former rising star of his abilities. His balance, punching power, and stamina

were all fell short in that fight. It’s probably best we don’t see Lacy in

there with Taylor. Watch the full fight and judge for yourself:

Judah-Clottey

on Tap for August 2

This Saturday HBO has a promising matchup between

Zab Judah (36-5, 25 KOs) and Joshua Clottey (34-2, 20 KOs) for the IBF

welterweight title. Due to Zab’s documented history of fading and losing focus

in the second half of fights, Clottey will be the favorite. But, if Zab can

keep his focus he has a shot of pulling this off since he has a marked speed

advantage.

Then again, haven’t we been saying that for the

past couple years about Zab? Prediction here is the more durable Clottey by

decision. On Showtime, Vic Darchinyan (29-1-1, 23 KOs) will look to get back

into title contention by defeating Dimitri Kirilov (29-3-1, 9 KOs).

Noreaga Explains Appearance on Adult Site

Last week a video surfaced showing rapper Noreaga being interviewed by the Penny Show on B#######.com, a popular adult entertainment site.

Immediately rumors began to spread of Nore possibly engaging in sexual acts on the adult section of the video.

Seeking to put an end to the speculation, Nore reached out to AllHipHop.com to put the rumors to rest.

“First off, when I saw the rumors and headlines of Nore in a p###, I laughed and simply brushed it off thinking there’s no way in the world any one will believe this,” Nore told AllHipHop.com. “Now [that] the rumor has spread to one of my favorite bloggers/websites Illseed [AllHipHop.com rumor section], I am here to quickly put this rumor to rest! The video is two years old! I’m on there promoting an album that is already in the stores [N.O.R.E. Y La Familia: Ya Tu Sabes]! So yes the video is two years old and I’m not humping on it!”

Ever the pitchman, Nore is using this opportunity to speak on the progress of a long overdue third album with rhyme partner Capone.

“The only time I took my shirt off was for the CNN album cover photo shoot so that the blogging community had something to laugh at!” Nore quipped. “Go out and get that CNN album and it will explain my connection with that website/p### company, which we do go something in the works, but it ain’t N.O.R.E. showing off my pole in any of it [laughs]. CNN album coming soon!”

In June, CNN released a mixtape through DJ Whoo Kid entitled CNN Back on that Q.U. Sh*t.

The new album, tentatively titled Reporting the War, will feature production from DJ Premier, Alchemist, and Havoc.

Guest MC’s include Tha Dogg Pound, Mob Deep, Shawty Lo, Uncle Murder, The Clipse, and Maino.

At the press time, a release date has not been announced.

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!As always, don’t forget to read the rumors from earlier in the day.

WHY WAS LIL WAYNE’S VIDEO WACK?

You saw the video for “A-Milli.” The song is a smash, but

the video is trash. Apparently, they actually hired a person to do that video

at the same time as “Got Money,” which is the official second single. The video

for “A Milli” was simply put, something to keep promoting the album – not to be

high art. I heard it took less than an hour to shoot – during the LUNCH BREAK.  Hope he paid for an hour of work.

THE KIDZ SAY: NAY!

Well, I thought underground rumors were good, but now I am

finding that might not be the case. The Kidz In The Hall and their reps deny a

previous account of what happened in AZ. I got word that there was no bottle that

was swung from Double – O. I heard that some overzealous bouncers were involved.

I also have been told that Double – O was sent to the hospital and Nawledge

also got arrested for unknown reasons.  We are sure to get a full report

on this shortly.

JA RULE IS COMING!

I know the fans are waiting for Ja Rule to come back to the

game. I heard over the weekend Ja Rule was doing it way big in the city. Rumor

has it, it was over there in New York at Club Mansion

– BALLLLLLLIN! Ja reportedly had a pair of bad babes by his side holding him

down. For all you fans (and haters alike), Ja Rule’s album is coming out this

year…it’s gonna be called The Mirror

and his first single will be with Robin Thicke.

NORE IS THE MAN!

Now, I love when an artist can take a rumor and flip it.

Case in point: Nore. I had this rumor on the site, but made it clear that Nore didn’t

do any on-camera boning in that p###. He was just promoting an album. The tape

was made in 2006 and this is 2008 when he’s got a new album with Capone

dropping! I can’t believe I’m a fav of Nore. For all my real Hip-Hop heads…what

album was better CNN’s The War Report or Mobb Deeps The Infamous? Think on

that. Here is the statement:

“First off, when

I saw the rumors and headlines of N.O.R.E. in a p###, I laughed and simply

brushed it off thinking there’s no way in the world any one will believe

this!!!!! Now that the rumor has spread to one my favorite bloggers/website

illseed / allhiphop.com rumor section, I am here to quickly put this rumor to

rest!!!!!! The video is 2 years old!! I’m on there promoting an album that is

already in the stores (N.O.R.E. Y La Familia: Ya Tu Sabes)!!!!! Right now, it’s

all about CNN- Capone-n-Noreaga!! Even the “Still On the Run Eating”

track with Lil’ Wayne

is off the CNN album!!! So yes, the video is old and no I’m not humping in it!

The only time I took my shirt off was for the CNN album cover photo shoot so

that the blogging community had something to laugh at!!!!! Go out and get that

CNN album and it will explain my connection with that website/p### company,

which we do got something in the works, but it ain’t N.O.R.E. showing off my

pole in any of it…lol. CNN album coming soon!!”

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES!

Thesmokinggun.com has delved further in the past of Rick

Ross. God help us all. See some of it at illseed.com, but it may all be fake as

far as I am concerned!

Rumor has it, Piles is having some issues with his street

cred too. You didn’t hear that from me. Lil Wayne got away with kissing a man

in the mouth. Just tell the people the truth and they will forgive. Jay-Z wears his ring! Everybody is all hyped up over that.  Jigga was spotted in Manhattan yesterday doing the dastardly deed.  Thanks Necole B!

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

Check out this crazy mess from the Associated Press. Tell me

the world’s not ending – tell me!

 “Middlefield (AP) — Details

are now being revealed about a brother and sister who left their mother’s

corpse to rot for more than seven years.

According to The Hartford Courant, a

100-page state police case file, released to the Hartford Courant, details how Diane and John

Simmeck Jr. made biannual trips to their mother’s ramshackle house in Middlefield,

stepping over her mummified remains on the floor.

Police believe Ann Simmeck died in late 1999 or early 2000. They

discovered her body in June 2007 after an estranged son, Michael Simmeck, had

grown worried about his mother’s well-being. She was probably 72 when she died

of natural causes.

Her remains were so badly decomposed that she was identified by comparing

her DNA to, her son, Michael DNA.”

Like the rumor about the dudes trying to have sex with a

cute corpse girl, Connecticut

has no laws against this activity so they are attempting to create a law to accommodate

them.

LADY DRAMA DIGS DEEP.

Lady Drama scares me sometimes. Oh, Shelz is on vacation for those looking for her.

Trina and Kenyon Martin Crash… But they’re fine! Make sure you read the rumors from earlier to get all the scoop. But I had to comment on Kenyon and Trina, who we’re involved in a car accident on Friday while they were in Belize together! Not saying anyone is dipping or dodging but I do wonder how Kenyon’s wife and kids feel about the whole deal! Just look at the pics and tell me these m###’s don’t look suspect:  In any event I hear that only one person was seriously hurt so check out the snippet of news below from trinafan.com and keep it moving: Trina and Kenyon Martin left in another vehicle and so did their luggage. The Abrahams meanwhile were assisted by paramedics. 12 year old Delane was seriously hurt and had to be carried on a stretcher. Diane Finnegan is one of the organizers of the visit. Diddy makes history AGAIN! Looks like Diddy is at the top of the trendsetter list again, word on the street is Mr. Bad Boy himself is the first person to cast a transvestite on a reality tv show! Yup that’s right Diddy new VH1 show ‘I Want to Work For Diddy’ has an alleged contestant at hand that goes by the name of Laverne COX.  I hear that this particular person also sleeps with many men and still has some parts of his manhood if you know what I’m saying! In any event peep the clip below and tell me what yall think! Don’t know the validity of this story and I’m still trying to keep my job here so I won’t go overboard but I will say this, leave it to Diddy to know how to keep us watching, no matter what or who’s at cost 😉 Gotta love it!

Catch the debut of the show on VH1 Aug 4th! Raven Symone gets dropped like a bad habit… it’s about time! Raven Symone was recently dropped from the Disney Record label Hollywood Records.  I’m hearing that Raven had lackluster sales on her recent album and was struggling with tour ticket sales as of late! Not for nothing Raven but your exit from the musical spotlight has been long overdue! We haven’t heard anything good from you since your early 90’s single ‘That’s what Little Girls are Made of’, who produced that cause you need to use them again and maybe you can sell more than 10,000 copies! Speaking of which let’s run it back I need a throwback joint to get me through the day not to mention a good laugh! Enjoy folks:

‘Classic’ Lady Drama’s Food For Thought: If Raven’s albums really sold wouldn’t ya’ll be worried that talent is no longer a factor in selling records… oh wait it’s a little too late for that! [Illseed LOVES Raven like a lil’s bitty sister!] Has anyone else seen the new ?estlove Nike’s pure hotness I need a pair someone hook me up 😉 Did anyone actually believe that Diddy and Cassie were really engaged? Pure folly guys!

Go Hard or Go Home!

SKILLZ GETS BIZZY!

ILL PICS

Common, Serena, Ne-Yo, Kim Kardashian and others popped up to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Big Mac. But, Com doesn’t eat meat. What’s up with that!? Common is a veggie man.

Sanaa is like fish or chicken, but Serena is angus beef.

Ne-Yo sings his lil’ heard out to the Big Mac.

Kim Kardashian – she got the beef for sure!

FYI: The “other dude” with Ludacris is Warren Buffett, the richest man on Earth. Like Gates, he’s giving away a lot of money, so much his kids and grandkids are upset. Luda is with the two richest men on Earth. Crazy.

From what I have been told, this image is from Team USA’s exhibition game against Canada last week.  Luda was

sitting courtside with Bill Gates and Warren Buffett.

Actor Omar Gooding Debuts As Rapper With C-Bo

West Coast veteran C-Bo is gearing up to release two new projects in August, one with an unexpected rhyme partner.

C-Bo’s West Coast Mafia Records will release a new collaborative effort which finds the Sacramento rapper spitting alongside actor Omar Gooding, younger brother of Oscar Award winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr.

Trading War Stories, will mark West Coast Mafia’s second release through a new deal with Koch records and the debut of Gooding’s rap persona as West Coast Mafia recording artist “Big-O.”

The 31-year-old actor, whose acting credits include the Tyrese Gibson led movie Baby Boy and the short-lived, controversial ESPN drama Playmakers, has been honing his Hip-Hop skills, he says.

“It was a couple episodes [of Hangin’ wit Mr. Cooper] where I was spitting,” the former child star told AllHipHop.com. “But I been doing my thing for a little while, below the radar, done had a few deals and what not. People that do know I spit have been waiting for it for so long, and I had a nice little break between films. I linked up with the West Coast Mafia, and we tryna make things happen.”

Trading War Stories finds the two artists and guests like Chino XL and Denver underground phenoms Young Doe and Hawk Man swapping street tales over West Coast beats.

Throughout the new project, C-Bo says, his latest recruit exceeds the expectations most may have.

“It’s a West Coast album for sure, the sound and everything,” said C-Bo, who is also signed to Young Buck’s Cashville Records. “O is not like no new rapper. Man, this n***a act like he got like 50 albums out already. The way he control the mic and his voice. He’s very experienced with that, so they gon’ love that s### man, for real.”

Big-O is featured on West Coast Riders 4, C-Bo’s compilation series showcasing his well-established indie label’s impressive roster of young talent.

This time around, the compilation includes new music by West Coast Mafia’s Killa Tay, Young Bleed, Young Chaz, S#### and C-Bo’s son Streets, with assists from C-Bo’s Thug Lordz partner Yukmouth and his Cashville labelmates the Outlawz.

West Coast Riders 4 hits stores August 5.

C-Bo is also in the pre-production stages of a new film entitle No Warrants, which will also feature an on-screen appearance by Young Buck.

Preview Approved: The Race Card at the Movies

Those who create popular art often characterize their creations as being a “reflection of reality,” a mirror image that reflects the world around us. I’ve always thought that description was somewhat misleading. Popular art doesn’t so much reflect “reality” as it reflects what we as a society believe to be real – or what we think is real.

When it comes to human beings, everything is based on perception. The creative minds behind our popular art forms are still human. The art an artist creates is largely informed by how he perceives the world around him. Perception often varies from person to person. We all have our own way of seeing the world. However, there are constants and similitudes. These similarities are what popular artists often zero in on.

Movies, in particular, have always been plugged directly into our collective Id. They don’t reflect our reality so much as they reflect what we, as a society, have on our minds, our desires and our perceptions. Most intriguing though, is what the movies reveal about how we see each other. Over the years, films like Do The Right Thing, Crash and Babel have given us an artistic glimpse of the narrow perceptions people often have of each other, and the ways we view each other in terms of labels and categories.

Nothing is wrong with these labels in and of themselves. The problems occur when we are unable to see past these labels and put them in their proper context. We begin to see each other as types, a set of predetermined characteristics that fit neatly into a box. No form of art reflects this tendency in human beings more than the movies.

It is important to note that we, as a society, tend to be selective in terms of what stereotypes we will or won’t allow. For example, Black folks tend to rail against hood flicks and rap videos that promote stereotypical images, only to applaud so-called “positive” black films and shows that also contain stereotypical images.

The films and plays of Tyler Perry are chock full of stereotypes and caricatures, but are given a pass because they promote “positive” and Christian messages. In my mind, a stereotype is a stereotype. They all lend themselves to limited thinking, and make it easier to place those who are different from us into a box.

It’s kind of silly to get mad at our popular artists for reflecting these tendencies back to us, but I’m sure we will continue to do so. Here are a few upcoming films that are sure to offend someone in the coming months:

Tropic Thunder (August 13)

In this action/comedy directed by Ben Stiller, three self-indulgent movie stars (Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr.) are cast in an expensive epic film about the Vietnam war. The production team decides to abandon the troublesome trio in the jungle when their diva-like behavior becomes too much to bear. The actors themselves are completely unaware of their predicament. They still think they are filming a war movie, when in fact they are in the middle of a real war. Hilarity ensues.

Robert Downey Jr. plays actor Kirk Lazarus. Lazarus is cast in the role of Sgt. Osiris, a character who was originally written as African-American. Being the consummate method-actor, Lazarus decides to play the role as written. He even goes so far as to dye his skin in order to play the part “convincingly.”

I’ll start off by admitting that I find the basic idea behind the Kirk Lazarus to be quite amusing. The guy obviously takes himself and his craft way too seriously. As described, he comes off as the very embodiment of pretense. This is the kind of thing that can go either way. It will either be the funniest performance in quite some time, or the 21st century version of Soul Man

For Robert Downey Jr.’s sake, I hope it’s the former instead of the latter. He has generated a substantial amount of goodwill via his star-making turn as Tony Stark in Iron Man. I’d really hate to see him squander that so

soon.

T######## (August 15)

Jasinda, a young Arab Girl, is sent to live with her strict Lebanese father in a small Texas town. This living situation forces her contend with a number of social issues that cause her personal turmoil. She is confronted with racism both inside and outside her home. Her neighbors and classmates harbor prejudices against Arabs, and her Lebanese father disapproves of her Black boyfriend. As if all of this weren’t enough, Jasinda is trying to understand her budding sexuality and raging hormones.

Wow! This is such a potential powder keg… I don’t know where to start. The movie has already made quite a splash at the Sundance and Toronto film festivals. This film contains a number of issues that Americans have a hard time dealing with, not the least of which is a 13-year-old girl coming to grips with her sexuality. That alone is more than enough to send the more conservative audiences into a panic.

The film also examines how foreigners sometimes take on the bigoted attitudes of Americans not out of malice, but simply out of a desire to fit in. Jasinda’s fathers’ racism is motivated by his concern for his daughter. How will she be accepted in American society if she dates a Black man?

Lakeview Terrace (September 19)

Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington play Chris and Lisa Mattson, an interracial couple who have just moved into their dream home. Their next door neighbor, LAPD Officer Abel Turner (Samuel L Jackson), doesn’t approve of interracial marriages. He starts harassing the Mattsons on a regular basis, and as it escalates into outright terrorism, the young couple has no choice but to retaliate.

Again, one cannot avoid parallels to an older film. In this case it would be 1992’s Unlawful Entry, in which Ray Liotta played a mentally disturbed cop who begins stalking a rich couple after

responding to a break in at their home. That film was something of a guilty

pleasure in its day, as essentially a well made B-movie. With the backing of Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, Lakeview Terrace looks to be very much in the same vein, only this time the antagonist is Black. Could that be considered a sign of progress?

Maybe, on some level, I guess it’s good that Hollywood now sees its way clear to allow Black actors to portray villains in B-Level thrillers. The motivation of the Abel Turner character is also interesting. Now, Black villains are allowed to be just as hateful as their white counterparts.

Nelly Named Spokesmodel For Sean John Underwear

Saint Louis rap star Nelly has been named the first ever spokesmodel for Sean John Underwear, it was announced today (July 28).

Nelly will be featured in the Fall campaign promoting Sean John’s collection of underwear and loungewear.

The campaign, which was shot by Randee St. Nicholas, showcases Nelly in a modern home overlooking Los Angeles, while modeling the underwear.

“I have been a big fan of Diddy and the Sean John clothing line for years,” Nelly told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “So, when they asked me to work with them, it was a real honor. I hope my fans will enjoy this campaign as much as I did shooting it.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs, founder of Sean John, hopes Nelly’s involvement will help boost Sean John’s earnings, which are pegged at about $525 million annually.

“I have known Nelly for many years and I really admire his work. To me, Nelly is the quintessential definition of the Sean John man,” Combs elaborated. “He has the attitude, the swagger, and most of all the physique that our customers can both aspire and relate to. And let’s be honest, all of the ladies out there are going to be thanking us for this campaign.”

Styles in the Sean John Underwear line include briefs, boxer-briefs, boxers, undershirts, pajamas and robes.

The line is sold in finer department stores around the world.
