KNaan, J. Period Unite for Messengers Series
The spirit and influence of famed music makers/activist Bob Marley, Fela Kuti and Bob Dylan will be spread to a new generation of listeners with the release of a five-part series of new music from mixtape DJ/producer J. Period and international rapper KNaan.
The first release from the offering, titled The Messengers, will be a three-song digital EP that will feature a remix to one song from each artist.
The EP will be followed with individual tributes to Kuti, Marley and Dylan as well as the release of The Messengers album in its entirety.
According to KNaan, The Messengers project strikes a personal nerve as he sees parallels between his personal and musical background and the struggle and hope relayed in the music of Dylan, Kuti and Marley.
“This project is really special to me. Not the product of ego but of passion, said the Somali-born rapper, who achieved success despite being raised in war-torn Mogadishu. Far from a marketing tool, it is an honest musical offering. Nothing gives a better window into the root and concept of my own sound than The Messengers.”
The arrival of The Messengers comes amid the release of KNaans sophomore album, Troubadour.
The A&M/Octone Records offering, which debuted at No. 32 on Billboards Top 200 upon its release in January, generated a buzz through the content of KNaans lyrics and protest songs.
Despite current dissatisfaction with the state of Hip-Hop, J. Period believes the music of the culture is still active with potential for increased creativity.
A lot of people say Hip-Hop is in a stagnant place, but I see few actually doing something about it, the beatmaker shared in a statement. I love the The Messengers because the concept is completely unique, but still true to the original spirit of Hip-Hop: combining the best elements from everywhere to create something fresh, to make a new statement. Fela, Marley and Dylan proved that when great music meets a powerful message, the result lives forever. I hope KNaan and I have done their legacies justice with this project.
Guests on the album include M1 of Dead Prez, Kardinal Offishall, Bajah of The Dry Eye Crew, Steele of SmifNWessun, Zion Is Zumbi ,Game Rebellion front man Netic the Rebel, bassist Brian Satz, and producer DJ Preservation. The Messengers EP is available now.
The tribute to Kuti will be released on Sept. 1, followed by the Marley tribute on Sept. 8 and Dylans tribute on Sept. 15.
The entire Messengers album, which will include additional bonus tracks, is slated to come out on Sept. 22.

CHAMPION: BIG SEAN -“GETCHA SOME”
The last Video Battle Winner was Big Sean and so hes back. What is interesting is that Big Sean, a protégée of Kanye West beat another Kanye affiliate named Kid Cudi and a veteran named Busta Rhymes. Even stranger is that he beat Busta with a song called Getcha Some and Bussa Buss had a similarly titled song on one of his last CDs.
RICK ROSS & TRIPLE CS ROAD KILL
Truth is, Rick Ross has been able to deflect hate and criticism rather well by making quality music. So, on Road Kill he continues his viral video campaign with the other members of Triple Cs, Gunplay,Torch and Young Breed. The song displays a unexpected level of lyricism and finesse on a beat that sounds like it was really made for somebody with an East Coast background. Surprise: These guys are deceptively versatile. The video is called Road Kill, but it could have been called Butcher Shop for the images of raw meat in the back of some random eatery. The split screen is low brow, but effective in conveying that this is raw Hip-Hop. Somehow, Consequence pops up in this Spiff TV-produced video. Check it out.
BIRDMAN WRITTEN ON HER FEATURING JAY SEAN
On the low, Birdman is doing his thing. Jay-Z catches flack for his age, but like his East Coast brethren, Birdman continues to do it his way. This song, Written On Her, is less gangsta than Stay Strapped, but quite addictive. Glossy and well produced, the video exemplifies the big tymer lifestyle that Birdman has lived for as long as weve seen him in the rap game. Jay Sean looks to be the newest pop addition to the blossoming ranks of Cash Money. This is probably going to be a hit offline, but can this club-rap jam survive a battle?
STOP THE VIOLENCE MOVEMENT SELF DESTRUCTION
We decided to go way off the path this week for our curveball KRS-One and the Stop The Violence Movement. This song is about 20 years old and seems very relevant this year, considering what happened with Chris & Rihanna and the tragic death of Dolla. And surely we cannot forget our nation is at war in two countries. Nevertheless, this song had about all the megastars of the era (Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, Stetsasonic, MC Lyte and others) and rallied against violence in the Hip-Hop community. Check it out and see if it stands a chance against these thugs and swaggerific rappers!

I definitely prefer being paranoid. So, I turned on the TV for once and saw this show “Real & Chance.” I couldn’t believe the psychology behind this. A bunch of women vying for the love of a pair of gay dudes. That’s the premise of the show, right? Anyway, after seeing one dude with a wig-perm and the other with a greasy jheri mo-hawk, I had to just tun out. No disrespect.

BG GETS BUSTED?
There is a bad rumor going on that I think is possibly true. They are saying that BG, once of the Cash Money Millionaires is now in jail for some sort of probation infraction. I don’t know exactly what it is, but he was arrested in New Orleans, but the charges are reportedly from a case in Houston. I don’t know the nature of the charges, but it is my understanding that this could jeopardize a potential CMM reunion. On top of that, wasn’t BG signed to Grand Hustle? I don’t know of any release on deck for him. Let’s just hope BG is ok.

TRAGEDY KHADAFI IS BACK
KANYE AND KIM KARDASHIAN? Hmmmmmm
Im not the sort of person that makes stuff up. You know me, you know that. So am going to run this letter from a reader that may have busted the roof on a major rumor! As you know, there are reports that a text message from Kanye West was a driver in the break up of Kim and Reggie. Now check this one. These are not my words, but those of a reader.
I was on a plane coming back from JFK headed to LAX two weeks ago and BOTH Kim K. & Kanye were on the flight, with ‘Ye sitting right in front of me and Kim sitting directly across from me. I’m not positive if this was planned or not because we had underwent a 6 hour delay, so who knows if one of them had to change their prior flight like I had to do. Tyra Banks and some other supermodel were on that same flight as well, and all of the ‘famous’ people onboard conversed with one another besides Kanye & Kim. Not only did they not talk with each other at all, they honestly didnt even look each others’ direction for the whole span of the flight. It got to the point that it was past obvious that they were purposely ignoring each other, but I didn’t exactly realize that until I read your column the next morning about Yeezy sending Kim all those texts and whatnot. And if Kanye & Kim really were kickin it earlier in the week, why woulnd’t one of them had at least said what up? With that said- I guess something has to, or had to have been going on w/ them. this obviously isnt a large point of concern for me haha but I thought you might be able to use some of the info.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE CAN WRITE
Remember the rumor I just had yesterday? The one about Chris Brown, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake? Well, I heard that Brown requested Justin for his writing skills. I heard Chris Brown was fearful that Justin wouldnt work with him, because of the Rihanna stuff, but Justin was cool, I heard. Word is, Justin laughed it off and reminded Chris of his own fiasco with Janet Jackson.
JAY-Z IS FINISHED BP3!?
The final mixes have been completed for Jay-Zs Blueprint 3 I am hearing. I mean, thats nothing revolutionary considering the release date rapidly approaches. I cant wait, to me honest. It has been a minute since an album was an event. Slaughterhouse was somewhat of an event, but that was more based on the underground love! Thats all I have on Jay-Z. RICK ROSS GOT MAJOR NY RESPECT?
Im not from New York and definitely not a NYer so I have my opinions. BUT .somebody from New York gave me the low down on Rick Ross. I heard when Ross performed his song Hustlin and the crowd was lukewarm to it. But, I heard that wasnt a diss as much as it was how NY crowds are. They dont fully give it up to anybody, I was told. Anyway, I heard people subtly respected him for staying and watching Rakim do his thing. Rakiim always does his thing. My source said, Everyone was a little confused and surprised to see The Bawse at that type of show. They forget Ross isnt exactly a baby and Big Daddy Kane is in his Top 5.

One of those Kardashian girls was caught with coke on her and the other one had declared shes pregnant and another still is kissing on Terrance J. uhm wait..thats more Karddashians than there really are! Anyway, Kim is starting to look like the most normal one of them all these days. Rumor has it, Kim and Reggie are trying to reconcile their long-running relationship, the Kanye rumor be damned.
“He doesn’t want to let her go. They are talking again and he is hopeful that she will agree to give it another go,” Contactmusic quoted a source as saying. Kardashians best friend Brittny Gastineau also believes that the pair could get back together.

Here is another Kanye rumor that I have no way of confirming or not. As a matter of a fact, I forget who told me this rumor, but I remember it nonetheless. But, you remember when Kanye said, I told Jay I did a song with Coldplay Next thing I know, he got a song with Coldplay ? Well, clearly Kanyes not beefing with Jay-Z since they are working together, but I heard the same cannot be said for Chris Martin of Coldplay. I heard that Ye really isnt feeling his soft rock homey due to the way he did that double Roc song with him and Jay. I mean, there really isnt much more to it than that.

CAP-1 ON DTP?
One of my friend readers attended the DUB car show in Atlanta, and it was pretty live, he said. He told me there were of beautiful women and the performances were fairly long. He said Luda and DTP were on the stage performing for over an hour. Now here is the weird part. He said tha Cap-1 was there on the stage with them as well, lending to a rumor that he MIGHT be signed to them now. I cant remember all these rumors, but I think Cap was signed to Grand Hustle or something under the name Richie Rich. Sam Ferguson, president of Don Diva Magazine, was shot and killed in Miami. He was shot while driving, which caused his vehicle to crash into a highway median. Sam was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a good dude!!!

Canadian Young Money Dates Canceled; Possible Border Troubles To Blame
A pair of dates on Lil Waynes Americas Most Wanted Music Festival tour were canceled last night due to unknown reasons.
On Monday (August 17), fans who had purchased tickets arrived at GM Place only to learn the concert had been canceled.
Tonights show (August 18) at Lil’ Wayne at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta has also been canceled.
While no official reason has been given for the sudden cancellation, sources told AllHipHop.com that one of the performers, maybe Lil Wayne himself, was not allowed entry into Canada.
Nicki Minaj, an artist on the tour, tweeted that authorities were being extra and searching another bus that was attempting to enter the country.
They got the other bus under pressure right now, Nicki Minaj said. Ni***z brought the dogs out and s**t.
Lil Wayne was also forced to cancel a concert in Canada in June of 2008 due to unknown circumstances.
Just last week, Lil Wayne appeared in court to dispute evidence related to a 2007 gun charge in Manhattan.
Lawyers for the rapper also appeared in court last week to dispute evidence related to a drug case pending against the rapper in Arizona.
Rapper Soulja Boy Tell Em, who is also on the tour, confirmed both dates cancellations, stating that he was off to Los Angeles due to the time off.
It would not be the first time a rapper from the United States has been denied entry into Canada.
DMX, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Tony Yayo, Young Buck, and other members of 50 Cents G-Unit have all been refused permission to enter the country.
Beanie Sigel Busted For Weed
Philly rapper Beanie Sigel was arrested in a New Jersey suburb on Sunday (August 15), after police stopped a car he was traveling in and found a stash of marijuana.
Sigel, born Dwight Grant, was stopped in Wrightstown, New Jersey shortly after 12:30 AM, according to New Jersey Stat police.
The rapper was supposed to perform at a private event at Kellys Bar, which is owned by local councilman Scott Timberman.
According to the Burlington County Times , Sigel and two other men in the vehicle were charged with marijuana possession under 50 Grams and released.
Sigel, 35, was forced to cancel the performance due to the arrest as well.
In related news, Beanie Sigel is working on a new album titled The Broad Street Bully, which currently has a tentative release date of September 1.

Lil Flip has announced his latest album, Respect Me, will land in stores on September 29 via High Powered Entertainment/E1. According to the 28-year-old rapper who also goes by the name Flip Gates, the new 15-track album is a reflection of his life. “The thing about this album is that it’s so reflective of me, my music, life and lifestyle,” Lil Flip said. “Trust me; everything I rap about is based on truth. So when I rhyme dirty style about the Bentleys, the clubs, the platinum, the girls, my life’s lessons or whatever, it’s not bragging, it’s just fact.” Respect Me was produced by J Silva, who has crafted tracks for Daz, E-40, Keyshia Cole, Lil Wayne and others. The first single from the new album is titled “Da #1 Fly Boy.”
MC Hammer is planning to release a three new albums this year, including a follow-up album to his 1990 smash hit album, Please Hammer Dont Hurt Em. Billboard reports. Hammer has built up a catalog of about 200 unreleased songs, some of which will be featured on Dont Hurt Em. Please Hammer Dont Hurt Em spawned several hit singles including You Cant Touch This and Pray. Hammer is also putting the final touches on DanceJamtheMusic and a Christmas album that will feature his family.
The daughter of the late Notorious B.I.G. celebrated her Sweet Sixteen last night (August 16) at Taj in New York. TYanna Wallace was just three-years-old when her father, rapper Christopher Notorious B.I.G. Wallace was gunned down in March of 1997 after a party in Los Angeles. “I needed to have him here with me,” TYanna told The New York Daily News. “I feel like I’m all grown up now.” TYannas favorite rapper, Chicago emcee Kid Cudi performed during the birthday party.
DMC, the worlds largest DJ organization will celebrate its 25th anniversary this September in London. DJs from around the world will gather at the Indig02 Arena in London from September 11-12. On Friday, the DMCs Battle for World Supremacy will take place, as DJ Switch will defend his title against the planets top DJs. Also scheduled to take place are team battles and the DJ Championship World Final. Queens Officials Fear Violence at 50 Cent Charity Event
50 Cents surprise concert for his native Queens is being met with resistance from community officials who suspect the event will be mired in violence.
50, who will bus hundreds of children to a benefit concert at New Jerseys Six Flags on August 29, set the free Queens show to commence the following day at the PS-30 schoolyard in his native South Jamaica neighborhood.
Everybodys gonna be there, you need to stop by there and come hang out with us. its gonna be a whole lot of festivities and games going on, a lot of educational stuff at the same time, 50 Cent told AllHipHop.com. “We will have people from the DMV, there if you dont have your drivers or permits and stuff like that you can come do that. The clinics all kind of stuff, if you are there you can come fix it.
Even with his community outreach efforts, law enforcement are fearful that the moguls past street beefs could result in innocent concert goers being hurt.

The event is being sponsored by 50 and Bette Midlers New York Restoration Project, which is a non-profit agency that focuses on support for low-income families.
Although 50 has been prominently featured for the show, his publicist Keesha Johnson denied he would perform a set, insisting the G-Unit CEO would be there for appearance purposes.
The NY Parks Department is finalizing arrangements for the show, which is scheduled to take place on August 30.
The concert will be preceded by the schools Family Day at 5:30PM.
At press time, 50 Cent has not confirmed the artists who will perform for the benefit concert.
