“It’s really about self-esteem in Black girls, I guess,” said Brown about his writing work. “You know how Black women do so much – process their hair, change their eye color. It’s really about a little girl who does all these things to herself and changes herself, and she realizes she’s just better off the way she is.”
Brown decided to try to tackle the issue of self-esteem/self-love for Black women because of his 13-year-old daughter. He also looked to legendary author Dr. Seuss (How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, The Cat in the Hat) for inspiration.
“I want it to be real ‘Dr. Seuss-y’… I don’t know how Dr. Seuss did it. I don’t know how he wrote The Grinch, Green Eggs And Ham, and One Fish, Blue Fish. What was going on in that guy’s brain to be able to write those things?” Brown questioned. “I think I am Dr. Seuss! I’m The Grinch. I’m all his characters come to life in rap music.”
Danny Brown is currently working on the follow-up to 2013’s Old album. He has already logged in studio time with producers The Alchemist, Paul White and SKYWLKR.
