(AllHipHop News) Run DMC have been bestowed with a lot of first and they are about to conquer another frontier thanks to the Grammys.
The Queens rap group, that included DJ Jam Master Jay, are set to be the first rappers to get the Recording Academy’s Grammy lifetime achievement award. The award show is set to air on February 15, 2016.
Run DMC was the first gold-certified Hip-Hop album in the US (1984’s self titled debut), the first to receive a multi-platinum album certification (1986’s Raising Hell).
“I just got a call from the Grammys!!” They shocked me!! We’re the first rappers to get this award!! Shocked! Grateful! God is good!!! I’m so honored to be a #GRAMMYs Lifetime Achievement Award recipient this year. Thank you to the Recording Academy!,” Rev Run tweeted on Wednesday.
DMC has not commented yet. Jam Master Jay was murdered in 2002, but was an invaluable member of the group. They disbanded shortly after his death.
Run DMC will be honored with jazz legend Herbie Hancock, R&B singer Ruth Brown, music pioneers Earth, Wind & Fire, late Cuban salsa singer Celia Cruz, rockers Jefferson Airplane, and country musician Linda Ronstadt.
