Lupe Fiasco Says He Could Soon Be Off Atlantic Records

(AllHipHop News) The tumultuous relationship between Lupe Fiasco and his label Atlantic Records appears to be finally coming to an end. After battles over musical content and release dates for his albums, Lupe revealed on Twitter that he is in negotiations for his next LP Tetsuo & Youth to be his last one released through Atlantic.

[ALSO READ: Lupe Fiasco Ft. Ty Dolla $ign – “Deliver”]

In an interview with HipHopNation earlier this year, Lupe explained part of the issues with Atlantic stem from the company wanting him to sign a “360 Deal” and he refused. Lupe said at the time:

I don’t have a 360 deal. Since they can’t eat off my merchandise or my publishing or my touring they treat me like a third-class citizen up there… I paid the price for that…

I got my deal in like 2005, so that was when they were still trying to make that thing happen. By the time I got to my second album, The Cool, they really had it in place. I didn’t want to have to do it. They tried to negotiate it with me. It’s just the money wasn’t right. It just wasn’t right. And we were like, ‘Nah.’ Then they were like, ‘Well, if you don’t sign this 360 deal we can’t guarantee we’re gonna promote your records.’

Lupe’s latest project had been in limbo for over a year. According to reports, the Chicago rapper’s fifth studio album was only given a release date after the hacktivisit group Anonymous threatened Atlantic. Hours after Anonymous issued a public ultimatum, the label revealed Tetsuo & Youth will be dropping on January 20.

Is J. Cole Subject Of The “Detroit No Fly Zone”

J. Cole has a new album, Forest Hills Drive, which is is well received. But, there may be an issue with regard to him coming to Detroit. As you know, Detroit don’t play. And they have this little thing called the “no fly zone.” We wouldn’t normally thing of him as a candidate for the banning…like Trick Daddy was. But look at the imagery from the social media stalking and you tell me.

TDE CEO Addresses Alleged Kendrick Lamar Album Tracklist Circulating Online

(AllHipHop News) The Internet had people speculating if Kendrick Lamar’s next album would really include features from Pete Rock, Ron Isley, and George Clinton. That’s because a rumored tracklist for the project began circulating online with those names attached to it.

Apparently, the list of songs making its way around the web are not what fans can expect on K. Dot’s next release. TDE CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith jumped on Twitter to squash any talk that the alleged picture of the back cover to Kendrick’s future album was real.

Despite hinting that the follow-up to good kid, m.A.A.d. city would be dropping before the end of 2014, Tiffith nor Kendrick have given any information when the new album will be hitting stores. In the meantime, the “i” emcee recently found out his latest single is up for the “Best Rap Song” and “Best Rap Performance” Grammy awards.

LeBron James, Kyrie Irving & Nets Players Wear "I Can't Breathe" T-Shirts At NBA Game (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) The killing of Eric Garner at the hands of New York Police officer Daniel Pantaleo and a grand jury’s decision not to indict the cop for choking Garner to death has led to widespread protests across the country. That social and political statement response has even entered into sports culture.

Before last night’s Cavalier-Nets game, NBA stars LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Garnett, Deron Williams, and others wore t-shirts with “I Can’t Breathe” printed on the front. Those were Garner’s final words before dying in Staten Island on July 17. Players from both teams were given the shirts by Nets guard Jarrett Jack.

Jay Z and The Nets made a statement tonight.

“It’s just for us to make a [statement] to understand what we’re going through as a society,” said James. “I’ve been quoted over and over about what’s going on as far as it’s more of a notion to the family, more than anything. Obviously, as a society we have to do better. We have to be better for one another. It doesn’t matter what race you are. It’s more of a shout out to the family more than anything, because they’re the ones that should be getting all the energy and effort.”

Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose previously wore an “I Can’t Breathe” shirt before Saturday’s game against the Golden State Warriors. The decision by the former MVP was seen as a major statement, considering Rose is one of the most reserved and media shy superstars in the league.

Dizaster Calls His Performance Against Cassidy "Sloppy"; Lush One Calls The Battle "A Classic" (VIDEOS)

(AllHipHop News) The Cassidy versus Dizaster battle did not end on Saturday the way organizers had planned. The two titans had to finish their “Ether” event face-off the following day in a parking garage. Despite the setbacks Diz believes his opponent performed well, but the California native was not as proud of his own showing.

Dizaster told BattleRap.com:

[The battle was] a little sloppy on my behalf. A lot of bulls**t came with this man. People don’t understand. The Internet was really kept in the dark about a lot of this s**t. People there were here know there was a lot of gang s### involved for the past two days… It’s just like redoing it. I feel like if we did it the first time – it just worked out right – I would have done everything right. I was just sloppy. I freestyled too much.

Dizaster added he felt that Cass had a “perfect presentation” and his flow was better. He did believe he had stronger bars than Cassidy though.

While Diz was critical of himself, one of the promoters for the battle thought the face-off was one for the ages. Fresh Coast’s Lush One also spoke about the contest with BR.

Lush said:

A classic. Unparalleled. A battle that’s gonna fold the muthafu**king Internet. This is what battle rap came from. It came from these types of environments of emcees going back-and-forth. It’s controlled chaos in its purist form and we brought it back to that.

The Bay Area Continues To Protest, As Rallies Erupt In Berkeley

(AllHipHop News) Recent verdicts not to indict the police officers responsible for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner have resulted in multiple demonstrations nationwide, as protesters have marched against increasing police violence at the expense of minorities.

The Bay Area, which historically has rallied for a number of social causes, joined the fray by launching protests in San Francisco, Oakland and most recently in Berkeley, where marches have been underway all weekend.

AllHipHop was on hand as a peaceful demonstration which began at UC Berkeley erupted into violence, as students and protesters were met with assault rifles and gas masks before being bombarded by tear gas and rubber bullets on Saturday, December 6. The following night, California Highway 24 was shut down as protesters swarmed the freeway, closing it completely.

A local Trader Joe’s was also looted and rioters unconnected with the initial protest were seen breaking windows in with skateboards. Multiple protesters have been injured and two officers reportedly suffered minor injuries as well. 11 have been arrested in Berkeley thus far.

Ab-Soul "These Days" Revisited: The Spirit Of The Black Lip Pastor

And so, here it is again. That time of the year when you thank the skies above that you survived three sixty five of this chaos called life. That time you reflect on all the great moments you had and ponder on the great memories you hope for in the future. The time everyone is ready to make a change and commit to a New Year’s resolution that they know isn’t going to make it past a week (lol). And then, in the meantime in between time we may reflect on a little hip hop.

On June 24th Ab- Soul released his much anticipated third studio album These Days. As I let the sounds of the album marinate in my mind I noticed a bit of a reduction in the religious and political subject matter that Soulo is oft known for, despite the controversial crucifixion themed cover. Still I felt the album was still very solid giving it a 7.5, but couldn’t help but notice how many of his fans were perturbed at his “dumbing it down”. “No not Soulo! He isn’t trying to sell out is he? Is he?” Was it a little light on Ab-Soul’s trademark content? Sure I’d have to say so, but this is only because we have grown to expect so much from Black Hippy philosopher. Throw the album under the microscope and the DNA is still there twisting, winding, and bending.

Just a simple glance at the tracklist and you would find the Christian themed track titles, “Gods Reign”, “Tree of Life”, and “Stigmata”. A little deeper look and you’d find that the references throughout the project to the spiritual and metaphysical are still very much present. Check out some of the excerpts below for a little deeper look into the spirit of the Black Lip Pastor.

“God’s Reign”

All I did was take gangsters to church
Got your lady with literature in her Louis bag
Got your kids studying outside of class

Here the Black Lip Pastor proclaims his ability to enlighten the masses from contrasting backgrounds. The knowledge that he puts in his music whether spiritual or political has a positive influence on his fans. These bars here capture his ability to appeal to people of all different backgrounds in a very simple way.

“Just Have Fun”

I just wanna teach you all about the mind (roll that weed, n####)
The power in it, the very power of mine (shake that ass, ho!)
It makes sense I take interest in the third eye
Due to my lack of sight, I guess it’s a sacrifice
Cause I’ve already envisioned what the world looks like
So when it’s handed to me, I won’t need to look twice

In” Just Have Fun” Soulo takes a more metaphysical approach to explain how his bout with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome was really a blessing in disguise, because it led to the development of his vivid imagination. His third eye allowed him to see when his other two failed him. In the face of his condition he knew that what his third eye allowed him to see was soon to become reality. From a metaphysical aspect the third eye is representative of the pineal gland, which when properly activated is believed to lead to a spiritual awakening in the individual.

“Stigmata”

I carry the cross, if Virgin Mary had an abortion
I’d still be carried in the chariot by stampeding horses
I’m more than a man, I’ve been died and rose again
Left these holes in my hands, so you know who I am
Stigmata, stigmata, stigmata

That vivid imagination was pivotal to him being the savior of the rap game, as he boldly and controversially reenacts the crucifixion while paying homage to the legendary Nas at the same time. A very audacious statement to say the least, but confidence is the key in this industry.

“Ride Slow”

I ride slow, live fast, small time to big cash
Cut corners, cut loose, cut class, f### school
Had to learn though, the harder way
Pushing pennies but see a three’s a 16 in my sport
Figure deal me I’m filthy, I know it’s greedy out here
I told you that but I made my way through it like Moses did with his staff!

This time Ab-Soul parallels himself to the likes of Moses to come up from the bottom to his current stage of success. Rapping isn’t his only skill, he’s actually mastered the art of parting the Red Sea as well.  He’s adept at side stepping all the pitfalls of life on the road to success.

“W.R.O.H.”

How the f### you say I sold my spirit?
I’m still taking blows at the Senate
Claims of Illuminati, I’m just tryna illuminate
Praise to the most high, God, Jah, Allah, Yahweh
Selassie eye and I’m proud to say, I never need a 9 by my waist
N##### still respect my gangster, celestials respect my space

With conspiracy theories abound Soulo makes a point of illuminating the masses to his stance against the “illuminati”. How could he be a member if these are the same people he boldly takes a stand against? He gets respect from every end of the spectrum, from the G’s to the celestials. This versatility is evident in his music as well, with him repeatedly showcasing his ability to bounce from mad scientist to your average hood dude and back again.

“Dumbed down?” Maybe. Well definitely in comparison to his previous work Control System, but These Days is still Einstein’s notebook compared to your average MC’s body of work.   I’d certainly stay tuned for the Black Lip Pastor’s next effort to raise chakras all across the globe.  It should be interesting to say the least.

Philly’s own NephLon Don is back at it again with another hit release entitled “Gone Get It”. After connecting and working with DJ YRS Jerzy he is learning alot about the game and moving at a fast pace. This track is a mellow toned single with a little bit of a trap twist to it and the vocals of Miles Davis on the hook who is also Royce Rizzy’s brother. There is a major hype surrounding Royce Rizzy right now after signing with Atlanta legend Jermaine Dupri at So So Def and RCA Records. Stay tuned for alot more music to come from these artists they are definitely on the rise and you won’t want to miss what is in store for them.
