Kanye West’s DONDA Partners With Jay Z’s Roc Nation

(AllHipHop News) Kanye West and his “big brother” just got a bit closer.  Earlier today (March 3rd), it was announced that Kanye West’s creative house DONDA has signed with Roc Nation.

Announced on Roc Nation’s official website, the partnership is set to “focus on Mr. West’s international recording brand and worldwide touring ventures.” The announcement also says it will manage all “DONDA music”, yet there are no artists signed under DONDA as of yet.

While DONDA does not have any signed artists, the creative brand has been behind almost every facet of Kanye West’s touring and marketing campaigns. Since its official branding in 2011, DONDA designed the Watch The Throne tour, Kanye West’s “New Slaves” projections and the album packaging of artists such as 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne and others.

This signing comes a week after reports surfaced that West’s Yeezus tour had to reduce ticket prices due to diminishing ticket sales. According to The New York Daily News, less than 35% of the tickets were sold for the final North American Yeezus tour date at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, Long Island last Sunday (February 23rd).

West’s Yeezus tour kicks off its Australian run on May 2nd in Perth.

Pharrell Performs “Happy” at Oscar’s + Sells Grammy Hat To Arby’s For Over $44,000 (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Pharrell did not take home the Oscar for Best Original Song, however his presence (and hat) was felt. Last night (March 2nd), Pharrell performed the #1 song in the country, “Happy” and finally sold his infamous Grammy’s hat on eBay to a well known buyer.

During the live telecast, Pharrell tweeted from his personal Twitter account that his Vivienne Westwood hat that he wore to this year’s Grammy awards had been purchased on eBay. Today (March 3rd), a tweet from the official Twitter for Arby’s claimed the sandwich shop were the ones who purchased the hat:

The $44,100 of proceeds will go to Pharrell’s charity From One Hand To Another which provides learning programs to “underserved youth” from ages 7 to 20 according to the charity’s official website.

Besides raising over $44,000 for charity by wearing a hat, Pharrell got the usually stoic Oscar crowd to liven up during his performance of “Happy”. With American Hustle‘s Amy Adams,. Meryl Streep and Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong’o dancing with the 40 years old musical genius, Pharrell’s “Happy” performance was the highlight of the night.

AHH MIXTAPE REVIEW: CyHi The Prynce’s “Black Hystori”

Cyhi the Prynce has been considered the underrated southern lyricist from GOOD Music. It’s been a while since his buzzworthy verse on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’s “So Appalled.” Now the rapper returns with the Kanye produced Black Hystori Project solidifying his spot as one of the top pure spitters in the game.

On the heels of Black History Month, Cyhi gives us some dope joints inspired by legendary Black figures (“Huey”, “Mandela”, “Basquiat” etc..) He layers his verses on this mixtape with dope lyricism and powerful messages. He paints vivid pictures of real life events and his great use of the multisyllabic rhyme pattern really allows listeners to flow along with his verses. Great use of wordplay and punchlines have always been a strong point for CyHi and he more than delivers on this mixtape. Rhymes like “I write my Graffiti in Swahili” are what really allow CyHi to stand out from his peers.

The standout track “Mandela” showcases CyHi at the top of his game lyrically and combines it with powerful production as Cyhi pays homage to Nelson Mandela on the hook. This mixtape shows that he has an empowering message to get across, and he does his best by incorporating that message into these songs. Another favorite is the song, “Basquiat,” which has a nice piano laced, jazzy beat, and CyHi lyrically paints a masterpiece. His references to geniuses of all forms of Art really make the song stand out. It’s a creative track, paying homage to another legendary black figure. CyHi is not just a lyrical genius, he also knows how to make dope songs. Songs like “February 29,” “Black Pride” and “Good Night” are nice smooth, celebratory party songs, and CyHi sounds right at home. On the song “Cydel Young,” CyHi gives us a snapshot of his life and delivers as a standout track.

The production on Black Hystori is excellent — powerful, soulful, smooth, and nicely layered production.  One of the best samples includes Outkast’s “SpottieOttieDopaLiscious” on the song “Good Night.” CyHi has a great ear for beats, and also can hold his own by nicely complimenting the production and not letting it overshadow his lyrics.

Overall, this is CyHi’s best project to date, and shows that he is finally ready for that debut album push. He’s a dope Atlanta lyricist that has a message, a great ear for beats, and the ability to make good songs. As a whole Black Hystori Project delivers a cohesive project that efficiently reaches it’s goals and has heavy replay value.

Lord Jamar Speaks On The Difference Between Macklemore & Eminem

(AllHipHop News) Lord Jamar has been very vocal about his opinions of white rappers. The Brand Nubian emcee has previously had a war of words with Yelawolf, and he has been an outspoken critic of Macklemore.

Jamar speaks on Macklemore even further during another interview with VladTV. This time he addresses the Seattle performer’s 4 wins at this year’s Grammy Awards. According to Jamar, Mack didn’t deserve to take home the trophies that night.

“How the f**k are you going to circumvent the creators of the genre? I don’t know any black people that have Macklemore’s album. Not a one,” said Jamar. “What I know to be a true Hip Hop fan, or a Hip Hop enthusiast, or where Hip Hop truly comes from – nobody has a Macklemore album.”

“We’re in a climate now where we have the Macklemores and the f**king Pu**ywolf and all these other motherf**kers, who black people have never heard of. Never heard one song. At least we heard Enimem songs before,” He continues. “They making money. And it’s no longer saying, ‘We have to come through the channels of real Hip Hop to be accepted.’ They’re like, ‘F**k y’all motherf**kers. I got all these white ass fans. I don’t need y’all black motherf**kers.'”

While Jamar takes artists like Macklemore and Yelawolf to task for what he feels is ignoring the black Hip Hop fanbase, he gives props to Eminem and his role in the culture.

“Eminem is a different kind of story. He came up worshiping black emcees. He was the first one that white people were able to look up to and worship,” explains Jamar. “But you gotta look at the altar he originally worshiped at. It was the altar of the black emcee. He did the study.”

Jamar adds, “putting in that time to do the knowledge to the history that you’re coming to. Eminem is one of those dudes. That’s why I can respect him.”

Love & Hip Hop’s Rashidah Ali Theatened With Jail Time For Probation Violations

[ALSO READ: Hip-Hop Rumors: Rashidah Ali is Allegedly Well-Versed in Making Threats]

CliffViewPilot reports that Ali was in court on February 28th after she missed several appointments with her probation officer and failed to pay the restitution required under her plea agreement. Ali’s $6,800 check to the Bergen County Probation Department bounced last year.

Ali was convicted of seven counts of fraudulent credit card use and theft by deception. She was originally admitted to a Pre-Trial Intervention program that would have cleared her of all charges if she fulfilled certain requirements.

The 30-year-old reality television star did not meet those requirements and was thrown out of the program. She was then convicted of her charges and placed on probation.

Ron Bar-Nadav, Ali’s attorney, promised that his client will make her bi-weekly probation appointments and pay a minimum of $100 at each appointment or at least $200/month toward her restitution. Judge Liliana DeAvila-Silebi warned Ali that if she does not follow these promises she will be locked up.

AHH ALBUM REVIEW: Pharrell’s “G I R L”

Pharrell has had a wonderful career. In the past year he’s produced hits like “Blurred Lines”, “Get Lucky”, and the Oscar nominated “Happy.” With a track record like that it’s hard to believe that G I R L is only Pharrell’s 2nd solo album. If you’re looking for Skateboard P, you won’t find him on this album. (Although you may find a pretty dope verse from him on Future’s “Move That Dope.”) This album gives us Pharrell in a super comfortable zone and him singing with his falsetto over groovy production. With wonderful production, G I R L stands as an enjoyable album.

There is no surprise that the production on this album is superior to the vocals. Although Pharrell has an acceptable singing voice, his vocals aren’t necessarily the best. Pharrell does a nice job of staying in his range and using crafty song writing and arrangement that compliments the production nicely. The production here is excellent. With beautiful instrumentation and groovy bass lines, this album is sure to get you dancing and head bobbing even if you don’t plan to. Pharrell does what he is best at, crafting infectious beats with dynamic drum patterns.

Standout songs like “Gust Of Wind” that finds Pharrell paired with Daft Punk and provides breezy, wonderfully put together instrumentation. Songs like “Gush” provide that classic Neptunes sound that many fans have loved for years. His collaborators on this project do a great job of joining in on the fun and enhancing the album. Even on “Come Get It Bae” Pharrell takes a song originally by former Star Trak artist, Rhea, collaborates with Miley Cyrus, and she doesn’t ruin it. The hidden track found on the back end of “Lost Queen” is the interlude “Freq” which features singer JoJo and is the only slow song on the album. It is a nice touch and contains dope lyrics like “You gotta go inward to experience the Outer Space that was built for you.”

Overall Pharrell delivers a good album, and it sounds like he really had fun putting it together. His joyful voice and foot tapping production makes for a happy atmosphere and an enjoyable feel. He maintains his position as a top producer of the music industry and proves that his artistry is top notch.
