Twenty years ago, a movie debuted that tackled the absurdity of Hip-Hop music, it poked fun at the music industry and the depth some will go to become rappers. That film is the cult classic CB4.
The film tells story of Albert (Chris Rock), Euripides (Allen Payne), and Otis (Deezer D), three middle-class friends who have ambitions of becoming rap stars. After Albert fails to get the help of nightclub owner and criminal Gusto (Charlie Murphy) to give them a break, Gusto is arrested and led to believe that Albert set him up.
While Gusto is behind bars, Albert takes Gusto’s name (sound familiar) becoming “MC Gusto” and forms a hardcore rap group, CB4 (Cell Block 4), with Euripides and Otis now known as Dead Mike and Stab Master Arson.
CB4‘s satirical depiction of gangsta rap still resonates with audiences today. Writers Chris Rock, Nelson George (author of the critically-acclaimed book, Hip-Hop America), and Robert LoCash are not only able to laugh at the sensationalism that was, and still is, such a part of rap, but also make a few poignant points about it as well.
In honor of the flick’s 20th anniversary , AllHipHop.com took another look at CB4 and came up with 5 reasons that the film should be deemed, “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and selected for the preservation by the United States National Film Registry just like its Rock-and-Roll counterpart, This is Spinal Tap.
Hip-Hop culture has made a lasting impression on music, and CB4 is one of the many ways it has done the same for film.
5) Music is a character in this film, and so the music supervision of the movie and its accompanying soundtrack are vital to the entire project’s success. Fortunately, neither disappoint. While the film’s focus is hardcore Hip-Hop, the music for CB4 ranges from gangsta rap to new jack swing and does a superb job of including all the popular types of urban music in the era of the film’s release.
4) Controversial lyrics and contemporary music go hand-in-hand. And while some younger rap fans may not be as well-versed in the 2 Live Crew obscenity trial as older ones, it is well parodied in CB4. But “offensive” material in pop culture is a never-ending debate between art and the establishment. So while the incident itself may be a dated one, the arguments for and against free speech still stand strong today and will probably remain intact well into the future.
[ALSO READ: The Tao of BIG: The 5 Most Poignant Bars on ‘Ready to Die’]
3). One of the things that this film captures very well is the transition that Hip-Hop made from its early stages to the gangsta motif that was so apparent in the late 1980s and early 90s. While the opening credits of the film play, lots of old-school rap memorabilia is seen and there is a part where the three friends pretend to be Run-D.M.C. and rap along with a tape of “King of Rock.” As CB4 progresses though, the music changes and then focuses on the popularity of hardcore rap at the then present time. The group CB4 even mimics N.W.A with their hit single, “Straight Out of Locash.”
2). Unlike the aforementioned This is Spinal Tap, CB4 has its support from the Hip-Hop community and that is evident in the cameos made by Eazy-E, Shaquille O’Neal, Ice Cube, Flavor Flav, and most memorably Ice-T. And even if the Rock-and-Roll satire preceded the Hip-Hop one, the lack of rock music support in Spinal Tap (not counting The Runaways’ bassist Vicki Blue) costs it credibility when compared to CB4. Years later, in Ice-T’s documentary, The Art of Rap, Grandmaster Caz famously says, “Hip-Hop didn’t invent anything. Hip-Hop reinvented everything.” CB4 is a perfect example of that.
1). The message of the movie is that wrong-doing and disrespect is nothing to be glorified. And while Hip-Hop has always had a fascination with crime and punishment in cinema, CB4 is notably significant because it presents potentially real consequences for even just pretending to be a thug. And impressionable Hip-Hop fans can relate to that far more than Scarface killing people, doing a ton of cocaine in a mansion, and then being shot to death.
Why do you think CB4 is a cult classic? Would you be interested in seeing a sequel? Sound off in the comments section!
(AllHipHop News) Birdman’s daughter Bria Williams and Lil Wayne’s daughter Reginae Carter will be releasing a new novel entitled Paparazzi Princesses.
The 14-year-old Hip-Hop heiresses’ book will be the tale of two young girls’ experiences growing up in the spotlight as the kids of famous parents, not much unlike Williams and Carter’s real life.
Paparazzi Princesses will not just be the fictional account of the main characters’ (Kyla Jones and Promise Walker) struggles with being “unintentionally famous,” but the book will also cover the concerns of the average high schooler like balancing school work with pursuing teenage crushes.
“There’s no better feeling than watching Bria and Reginae make this dream come true,” said Bryan “Birdman” Williams in a statement. “They took an idea, worked extremely hard, and brought it to life. It’s the kind of story that everybody can feel, and it’s only the start of much bigger things for these two wonderful young ladies.”
“‘Proud doesn’t even begin to describe how me and the Birdman feel. I can’t wait for everybody else to experience their story,” added Lil Wayne.
The novel was co-written by Harvard Law School graduate Karyn Langhorne Folan. Langhorne Folan previously authored Street Level: An Urban Fairytale, Don’t Bring Home a White Boy: And Other Notions That Keep Black Women From Dating Out, and she contributed to the popular young adult novels The Bluford Series with Breaking Point and Pretty Ugly.
Paparazzi Princesses will be released on June 4, 2013 through Cash Money Records’ publishing division Cash Money Content in association with Simon & Schuster’s Atria Books.
CMC’s previous releases include Basketball Wives star Evelyn Lozada’s The Wives Association: Inner Circle and Kwan Foye’s Animal which reached #1 on Amazon.com’s “Top Rated Fiction” and named one of Library Journal’s Top 5 Street Lit novels of 2012.

Undefeated eight time, five division world champion and current WBC Welterwight Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather is putting his title on the line against six-time and four-division world champion Robert “The Ghost Guerrero.
The matchup will take place on Saturday, May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and will broadcast live on Showtime PPV starting at 9 PM EST.
The blockbuster event is scheduled to coincide with Cinco de Mayo weekend and thus has been named “Mayday.”
“My new deal with Showtime and its parent CBS is very thrilling for me and a motivation to fight more often starting with my May 4 fight against Robert Guerrero,” said Mayweather. “I know Guerrero has been campaigning to fight me for quite a while now and I am happy to give him his opportunity. His name is mentioned among the other great champions in boxing today and that means he has proven himself in the ring. He will now have to prove himself against me, which is a whole other story. I’m excited for the challenge and fully expect a good, tough fight from him. However, I do expect the same outcome for him as all of the others who have challenged me before…42 have tried, 42 have failed. He will be number 43.”
Promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions, the event will be sponsored by Corona, AT&T and O’Reilly Auto Parts with tickets starting at $200 and exceeding $1,500 when purchased from Ticketmaster.
“First, I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the opportunities he has blessed me and my family with, said Guerrero. “All of the trials and tribulations that have occurred in my life have made me a better person as well as a better fighter and the results are undeniable. Nothing has ever come easy to me and that mental fortitude has prepared me to defeat the one fighter everyone perceives to be the pound for pound king in Floyd Mayweather. When we lock eyes across the ring on fight night he’s going to feel the presence of a man preordained for greatness. The time is now to show the world why I’m destined to dethrone Floyd and when I come out victorious on May 4th, the whole world will know I’m a man who willed his way to victory by putting God first in his life.”
During Mayweather’s career, he has amassed wins over world champions such as Genaro Hernandez, Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley, Victor Ortiz and, most recently, then WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Miguel Cotto, marking the 43rd win of his storied career.
Over the course of his participation in pay-per-view events Mayweather has generated 9.6 million buys and $543 million in revenue. He averages more than 1 million pay-per-view buys per event which is the highest pay-per-view buy average of any boxer in history.
Tickets go on sale today (March 12) at 1 pm EST via Ticketmaster (Mayweather v. Guerrero).

Most rappers dream of being the opening act for a rapper with the name recognition like Gucci Mane. Well, the rumor is there is a guy all over Facebook an the internet pretending to be Gucci Mane’s manager. Rappers or fans are stalked and targeting for an “opening slot” at a Gucci show and the scam begins.
You may get a note like this:
Sup my man i have an open slot opening up for Gucci Mane Sun Mar 24th @ Exchange LA , Los Angeles, CA. the slot is 150 for a 10 min performance set & comes with 10 tickets for you and your camp. if want your interested in the slot whats your #
From what I understand, the perps are finding and stealing actual pics of Gucci’s managers and creating fake Facebook pages. The people they hit see the page and thing its real because of the extensive pics and they often know what Gucci’s reps look like. Then, the $150 isn’t even a head crack for money. In fact, its quite low but apparently adds up QUICK. This dude is getting PAID praying off theses poor aspiring rappers. Most of the time, there isn’t even a Gucci Mane show at the time the man makes the pitch to the rappers. BEWARE!
I would put the names out there but I don’t want to further muddy the waters.

(AllHipHop News) Pop superstar Justin Timberlake continued his promo run on late night television this week when he stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon yesterday. Fallon could not avoid asking the singer about the perceived dig at rapper Kanye West while performing on Saturday Night Live over the weekend.
During his performance of “Suit & Tie” on SNL Timberlake changed one of the lines of the song to say, “my hit’s so sick got rappers acting dramatic.”
[ALSO READ: Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Justin Timberlake Diss Kanye West?]
Many observers took that lyric change as a response to Kanye’s recent rant in London where he made the statement, “I got love for Hov, but I ain’t f###### with that ‘Suit & Tie’.”
[ALSO READ: Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Kanye West Dissing Jay-Z, Beyonce, And Justin Timberlake?]
While on Fallon, Timberlake addressed his SNL rendition after the host pointed out that the lyrics were different.
“Did it seem that way? I don’t remember that. Did I change a line? It is live. You know really everyone keep calm,” said Timberlake.
Fallon then added, “keep calm and ‘Kanye on’ you guys.”
“For the record, I absolutely love Kanye,” Timberlake admits. “We love Kanye right?”
Kanye also had love for Justin at one point too. While West doesn’t seem to be a fan of Justin’s new single, he did praise the former boy band member as his greatest musical rival from his generation back in 2007.
“My biggest inspiration and biggest competition is Justin Timberlake,” West told XXL magazine. “We push each other. I look at me and Justin like Prince and Michael Jackson in their day.”
During his Fallon appearance JT goes on talks about his new album The 20/20 Experience and his upcoming summer stadium tour with frequent Kanye West collaborator Jay-Z. He also performed the song “Pusher Love Girl.”
The 20/20 Experience will be released on March 19 on RCA Records. The entire album can be streamed on iTunes.

(AllHipHop News) As one of the most famous couples in the world, Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s private lives are constantly under public scrutiny, but now the two superstars are among a handful of celebrities whose personal financial information has been thrown into the public sphere as well.
According to TMZ, besides Jay-Z and Beyoncé, the social security numbers, mortgage reports, credit card data, banking statements, and other information of Paris Hilton, Mel Gibson, Ashton Kutcher, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, FBI Director Robert Mueller, and Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck were also posted on an undisclosed Internet site.
Billboard reports that the Twitter handle associated with the website where the information was revealed also contained an anti-police message written in Russian.
The page featuring LAPD Chief Beck included the phrase “#YouCantCornerTheDorner” referring to former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner who went on a killing spree last month mostly targeting other LAPD officers after he felt he was unfairly removed from the force. Dorner has become somewhat of a cult figure and a symbol of the fight against police corruption in some circles.

“People get mad at us, go on the Internet and try to find information about us, and post it all on one site,” said Los Angeles police Commander Andrew Smith.
The hackers did not explain how they received the information of any of the victims or why those particular individuals were chosen as targets.
The FBI and the LAPD have both announced that they will open respective investigations about the leaks.

There is finally good news to report for Ice and Coco. No, not that AP.9 was run over by a 23-horsepower lawnmower!
Its something else.
If ya think Ice and Coco are anywhere near breaking up or divorcing, you are WRONG. I’ve got the latest. One of my loyal spies works at LAX, the airport for all of California. Just Kidding. All of Los Angeles. And my people told me they saw Ice and Coco out there heading somewhere. And she could only describe their demeanor as being in a state of paradise. Now, she made it clear, they weren’t faking this state of euphoria and they weren’t acting, even though Ice is an accomplished thespian at this point. If I had to guess, I would say they don’t tune into Twitter or blogs. And they probably did what other normal humans do and worked on their issues privately.
That’s all I can say. I’m happier than a tornado in a trailer park!!!

It’s been some time since we last heard from R&B singer and songwriter, Tweet. Today, she’s back and happier than ever working on a new album and promoting her latest single “Enough” off the newly released EP, Simply Tweet.
The EP, complete with five new songs, offers up a the angles of Tweet we’re used to. Smooth, sultry and soulful, a combination that’s almost always sure to spark things up.
AllHipHop.com got the opportunity to chat with Tweet to talk new music, her “case” against Twitter and whether or not she’s on good terms with Missy Elliot and Timbaland.
AllHipHop.com: We keep hearing ‘Tweet is coming back’, we’re ready.
Tweet: I’ve been ready since 2007 to put something out and it’s finally here.
AllHipHop.com: Why do you think it’s important now to release your music, than five years ago?
Tweet: From five years ago up until now, I’m writing about stuff that I go through. I’m ordinary just like everybody else. I just go through everything everybody else go through. Love lost, love found, happiness, joy, all the emotions and everyday life experiences. That’s what I write about. That hasn’t changed. These are things out of my diary.
AllHipHop.com: Talk to me about “Enough”, the first single off of Simply Tweet.
Tweet: It’s the first song we’ve released from the EP. I’m excited about that one.
AllHipHop.com: People can say what they want to say, but no one can say that you cannot sing.
Tweet: I’ve never professed to be the best singer in the world. I just do me and that’s what it is.
AllHipHop.com: Do you like the sound of what you’ve been hearing? For what music is right now?
Tweet: I don’t really do music to compete or try to stay in the now. I just do what comes from the heart and what I feel. It’s definitely coming out the way I expected it. Just good music.
AllHipHop.com: Are you working with any of the same camp?
Tweet: Production wise, it’s the same guys that did the first two albums, Nisan Stewart, Craig Brockman, Jubu Smith, same folks.
AllHipHop.com: You’re pretty much an open book.
Tweet: Pretty much. You basically know what I’m going through or have gone through because of my songs.
AllHipHop.com: You have a big spiritual influence. Do you see gospel in your future?
Tweet: Definitely. I come from the church and right now, what caused me to take a break, was to get my spiritual life together. It was lacking at the time. In 2005, I just needed to get myself together. I have to give God back his glory because if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be singing and I wouldn’t have the gift.
AllHipHop.com: Southern Hummingbird was ten years ago. It wasn’t like you flopped. The album fared well, surpassing gold status.
Tweet: I’m very grateful for that. Happily knowing that people still want to hear the music is such a blessing. I’m excited to give them what they want. This is what I love to do and I’m just happy to share it with those that want to hear.
AllHipHop.com: Outside of the EP, what are you working on?
Tweet: We’re finishing up what we have to do for the album, which is pretty much done. We’re putting out videos for this EP. On tour, doing shows and hopefully more to come, overseas. Just trying to get myself out there and consistently giving people shows because I wasn’t able to do that from the second album.
AllHipHop.com: How soon do you think we’ll get an album?
Tweet: Summertime, and if not the summer, then September, but it will definitely be this year.
AllHipHop.com: Are you doing it independently?
Tweet: Yes, through a major distributor.
AllHipHop.com: What’s your take on artists like Miguel, Frank Ocean, Dawn Richard and some of the new people out now?
Tweet: I love Miguel and Frank Ocean, I think with music, it’s enough room for everybody to do what they love to do. There’s a lot of creative people out there so I just appreciate the different types of music. They’re putting out great music so I’m happy where it is.
AllHipHop.com: Do you think that soulful music has a place right now?
Tweet: Definitely. It’s missing, that’s the only thing I would add to that. Not that it’s gone or it left, or it’s on its way back, because music is music. It will never leave. It hasn’t been on the mainstage or in the forefront, but people are craving real music. Instrumentation, real life music and things they can relate to. Everybody’s not in the club, everybody’s not popping molly’s. Everybody’s not drinking. People live regular lives and they go through pain and hurt and happiness. They want to hear about those things.
AllHipHop.com: So you don’t see yourself doing a song with Trinidad James anytime soon?
Tweet: [laughs] If it makes sense. There’s no reason why two different artists couldn’t make a record. It’s about quality.
AllHipHop.com: You’ve worked with Lil Mo on the “I Love Me” record. Can we expect more collaborations?
Tweet: Yes. We go way back. I’m a sucker for talented people, with real issues and real music. That’s a sister of mine so we’ve got to stay together.
AllHipHop.com: A lot of people don’t know but you’ve been around for a while, before Southern Hummingbird was released, working with Timbaland and Missy Elliot. What’s your relationship like with them these days?
Tweet: We still talk. Actually, I just did a couple of records with Tim for his album, not knowing if they’re going to make the album or not. We’re still family, that will never change. Our schedules didn’t allow Missy and I to do any records on this album, and I just wanted my supporters to get me this time. Since I’ve been gone so long, I didn’t want to flood them with collabs.
AllHipHop.com: Do you ever see yourself doing business or being signed to them?
Tweet: No. At this point I want to take the head of business. Have my own label and do things that way.
AllHipHop.com: Twitter is very popular and the term “Tweet” has an entirely new meaning to it. Have you thought about changing your name?
Tweet: No. If anything, Twitter would have to change something up. I was here first, and they took everything that I brought to the table. I brought the bird, the name and I will never change. I’ve been Tweet since I was a little girl. It’s not a phase name, that’s who I am. My father gave me that nickname, so no way am I changing that at all.
AllHipHop.com: It was rumored that you sued them or tried to take them to court. Any truth to that?
Tweet: No, it’s no rumor. I didn’t go that far, yet.
AllHipHop.com: You thought about it?
Tweet: Yes, there is a case, and there is room for that. I haven’t really pursued it fully yet.
AllHipHop.com: Anything else the people should know?
Tweet: I’m trying to reassure people that the music is coming. It’s been years since I’ve been saying this. A lot of stuff has happened since this whole hiatus. I wish I had a camera with me the whole time, so you guys would know. It’s coming out and I’m excited. That’s about it.
Simply Tweet is available on iTunes, here.

The series will center around Biggie’s children, C.J. and T’yanna, attempting to keep the dead lyricist’s Brooklyn studio open as they encounter opposition for all types.
Christopher Wallace’s spirit will also play a central role in the series to help guide his children through adversities. Throughout the course of the series, the pair find innovative ways maintain the studio’s revenue, such as opening the studio up to artists who want to record jingles for well-known brand names.
Wally Eltawashy, president of Ossian Media sees this component of the story as key to the animated series’ advertising potential:
“The show’s creative format will allow for advertising integration in the truest, purest sense of the term – this could well be the very first animated program to incorporate creative shops (and their brand partners) directly into the narrative.”
In a press release, C.J. and T’yanna spoke on the importance for this series to bridge the gap between the generation that grew up on the Notorious B.I.G. and the generations that follow:
“This project, “House Of Wallace” is a great opportunity for us to bridge the gap between our parents who loved his music and the kids and young adults our ages, that were not around to really appreciate it,
Along with the Ready To Die MC’s offsprings lending vocals to the series, a host of musical artists will also contribute. Original music along with renditions of Notorious B.I.G. classics will be central to the series.

(AllHipHop News) This year’s April’s Fools Day will not be a joking matter for a few people in the industry as Love & Hip Hop star, Winter Ramos prepares the release of her new tell-all book Game Over.
Winter recently exposed Love & Hip Hop co-host Lore’l’s prior intimate relationships briefly on the show, to the New York MC’s chagrin.
However, in an excerpt from the upcoming book obtained by AllHipHop.com, Winter details an interesting “love triangle” that developed between herself, ex-lover Jadakiss and Compton MC, Game.
According to the excerpt, Winter described Game as “corny” when they spent time drinking and smoking together, after he kept calling her ghetto. The interesting part of the excerpt is that while she was getting wasted with Game, her mind was on Jadakisss, whose real name is Jason Phillips.
After leaving Game’s hotel room in hopes of Jadakiss being in another room and when he was not, the scorned woman sought revenge:
“Jason wasn’t there and hadn’t been there. I got mad. What kind of business could he be handling that would keep him gone all night? Immediately, I jumped to the conclusion and figured he was with another b*tch, although he’d never played me like that before. Out of spite, I returned to Game’s room.”
According to the excerpt, even though the two entered a jacuzzi upon her return to the rapper’s room, they engaged in no sexual activity:
“The moment seemed weird. There weren’t many times where I was with someone who just chilled in a situation like that.”
In an interview with CocoFab.com she revealed that around the time she was about to sign the book deal, Jadakiss sent her a text simply saying “don’t do it.”
Game Over is due in stores on April 1, 2013.
