The Notorious B.I.G— a gifted wordsmith, an ingenious storyteller…and a prolific cultural critic? Released in 1994, Big’s debut album, Ready to Die, offers stunning insight into the psychology of the troubled young Black male. Big’s stark candor and impeccable flow not only cause us to nod our heads to the beat; it also inspires deep introspection as he waxes poetics about the harsh realities that continue to effect young people of color in the present day, making it one of the most socially and politically relevant Hip-Hop albums even 16 years after his untimely death.
“Things Done Changed”
If I wasn’t in the rap game/
I’d prolly have a key knee deep in the crack game/
Because the streets is a short stop/
Either you slinging crack rock or ya got a wicked jump shot
Big’s desire to be involved in dealing or rapping as a source of income speaks to his innate understanding of how impoverished/working class people of color are disadvantaged socio-economically, lacking above-ground employment, viable community networks, and, due to these circumstances, are rarely afforded the opportunities to make it beyond their neighborhoods. The lyrics also shed light on the growing educational gap for young Blacks living in poverty: as a result of the cutting back of educational services and community programs in poor Black neighborhoods, Black males are especially the least likely to attend higher education, making them more likely to fall into crime to support themselves. In four bars, Big tackles the perils of economic poverty, political neglect, and the prevalence of institutional racism effortlessly.
“Me and My B####”
When the time is right, the wine is right, I treat ya right/
Ya talk slick, I beat ya right/
Big’s culturally-learned femiphobia (the fear and disdain of the female) is highlighted in this verse, but more specifically, his lyrics speak to the fragmented intimate gender dynamics between young Black men women. The use of violence to “correct” his woman when she gets out of line is the outcome of living in the misogynistic culture in America, where Black men adopt the values and concerns of the white majority, which has always practiced sexism and domination towards women (Black women, in particular). Despite Big’s best intentions to maintain a love relationship with the woman in question, his way of thinking and behaving towards her during their challenges are a reflection of patriarchy in mainstream society, cultivating an unhealthy romantic bond between them that ends in tragedy.
“Everyday Struggle”
I know how it feels to wake up f##### up/
Pockets broke as hell, another rock to sell
People look at you like you’re the user/
Selling drugs to all the losers mad Buddha abuser But they don’t know about the stress-filled day/
Baby on the way mad bills to pay/That’s why you drink Tanqueray/
So you can reminisce and wish/
You wasn’t living so devilish s-s###/
Despite Big’s hustler persona, he refrains from ever completely glamorizing being involved in the drug trade. In this verse, the rapper puts a human face on crime by reflecting on his own wasted talent. It is in this moment that the listener is allowed to see those involved in a more sympathetic light.

“Machine Gun Funk”
Bed-Stuy, the place where my head rests/
50 shot clip if a n#### wan’ test/
The rocket launcher, Biggie stomped ya/
That’s why I pack a nina, f### a misdemeanor
From 2008 to 2009, it was reported that the leading cause of death among young Black men was gun violence. “It is young Black and Hispanic men in the inner city, who bear the burden of America’s gun romance,” journalist David Cole writes. Big’s fascination with guns in the following bars echoes this statement; Machine Gun Funk’s third verse bar is a chilling ode to the power and sexiness that automatic weapons have for many Black male youth in America . As the country comes to grips with the debate of gun control, Big’s casual allegiance to busting shots remains a chilling reminder of the allure of weaponry for a forgotten percentage population who otherwise feeling invisible, vulnerable and powerless.
“Suicidal Thoughts”
When I die, f### it I wanna go to hell/ Cause I’m a p############, it ain’t hard to f#####’ tell/ It don’t make sense, goin’ to heaven wit the goodie-goodies/ Dressed in white, I like black Tims and black hoodies/ God will probably have me on some real strict s###/ No sleepin’ all day, no gettin my dick licked/ Hangin’ with the goodie-goodies loungin’ in paradise/ F### that s###, I wanna tote guns and shoot dice
Unable to confront his demons, Big’s lyrics point to his grueling self-doubt, self-loathing and a heartbreaking lack of self-love. In a society where suicide is the third leading cause of death among young Black men 15-24, Suicidal Thought’s lead in bars exemplifies the culmination of Black male pain, a result of stress and social inequality finally taking its toll. The words demonstrate how a lack of emotional outlets and a desire to e#### a cool pose stifles African-American youth, as Big justifies the route of hell as a righteous punishment and death his ultimate destiny.
While Big is not the archetypal conscious rapper, Ready to Die reflects the experience of those who are poor, Black, and frequently disenfranchised. One must wonder if he was still living if he would be surprised at how much of his rhymes rang true with the current generation. If one thing is for sure, he rapped about what he knew: “I make music about what I know. If I’d worked at McDonald’s, I would’ve made rhymes about Big Macs and fries.”

I could be wrong on some of these, but I wanted to pay respect to the G in my way!
Soooooooo…..

Today is March 9 aka Biggie Day. I have a few rumors.
Did you ever hear about the time where Biggie allegedly kidnapped one of the members of Boot Camp Click? Back in those days, there was a lot of beef with the rappers of the day, even in NYC. If memory serves me right, they did a video that dissed B.I.G. and he didn’t like it. It wasn’t pretty but it ended there, from what I heard.
There was also a “beef” with Wu Tang. I’m not really sure where it came from though, because Biggie worked with both Meth and RZA. But, Raekwon called him out at one point, particularly over the album cover if I am not mistaken. There was a notion that it was too close to Nas’ Illmatic album cover. History was made musically though.
Biggie didn’t want to do any of the R&B songs and smooth records that made him a huge star. That was all Diddy and Biggie went along with it. Believe it or not, Ma$e was the same way. Biggie reportedly wanted his first single to be “Machine Gun Funk.” Biggie was about that life.’
Biggie’s mother is reportedly hoping to find a break in the murder case. Rumor has it, she’s been informed of new information that may lead to the murderer.
Biggie was a huge ghost writer of R&B acts in the 90s. Back then, ghost writers didn’t talk about it. Rumor has it, Jay-Z saw how much money Biggie made of ghost writing and started doing it himself.
Biggie starred selling drugs AFTER he was signed to Bad Boy. He was allegedly somewhere down in B-more and Diddy screamed on him and made him come back.
Last of all, I was told by one of the editors that Biggie still gets mail at his old residence back in Brooklyn. I wonder how that works for the people that live there now.
Oh. That little kid in the pic up top isn’t Biggie. Share your Biggie folklore and rumors!
Rest in Paradise, BIG!

(AllHipHop News) Gary, Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs has never been a fan of police.
Having had his own personal run ins with police over the years, and having rapped about experiences with crooked cops, Freddie Gibbs seems to be finally getting the last laugh.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times Post Tribune, Gary police officer Jason Johnson will serve 60-day unpaid suspension for abandoning his duties to partake in Freddie Gibb’s music video.
In early November, Johnson appeared in Gibbs video using his squad car as a prop, while Gibbs recorded his video on a street in Tarrytown.
Johnson, who is on paid medical leave, should be released next week to begin the suspension that almost resulted in termination.
Gary Police Civil Service Commission reached a plea deal between Johnson and Chief Wade Ingram.
Throughout Freddie Gibbs career, he has been outspoken against police corruption and their overall misuse of power to incarcerate young black males.
In a recent interview with Red Bull and Duck Down Films, Freddie recalled his experiences with police having lost a friend to police brutality.
“The police murdered my friend in front of his family and everything. They wasn’t compensated for nothing you know really at all. And I just think the police got away with a smooth one, and I talk about that st and I try to bring it that life every chance I get. Just not with him, theres people getting killed by police every day, you know what I mean? I just think that’s fked up, the way that they abuse their power – when you get pulled over by a police officer your life is in that n***a hands,” Freddie Gibbs said.
Gibbs has yet to comment on the situation, but does have an upcoming mixtape called F**K You Very Much that features the buzzing track “Sing for Me” featured below.

So, I have not said a lot about it, but Ciara and Rihanna have spiraled back into beef. I didn’t really know they had beef before. I think it started with an interview Ciara did and she slighted Rihanna before she was a powerhouse. Anyway, that’s cool and all that, but recently they have engaged in a cat fight.
Now, the other day Ciara posted a video of herself performing her new song and RiRi’s best friend clowned it and posted the following pic of them laughing at it.

Then CiCi tried to take the high road, mostly I suspect because she cannot win in the low road regions.

Now people are asking CiCi what the deal is.
Here is interview Ciara recently did:
If you can’t get it, don’t stress. She basically said she don’t really know where the beef comes from. She said she thought they were cool and that she saw her last about two year ago in New York.
I don’t know where this beef started, but its been funny many times.

(AllHipHop News) MTV and the “braintrust”(debatable) convened for their annual p###-off-hip-hop-awards Hottest MC’s list and crowned the Compton-bred MC, Kendrick Lamar as the hottest MC of 2012.
Kendrick’s ability to translate intricate lyricism into chart success a catalyst for his selection according to the “braintrust”.
“Swimming Pools (Drank),” hit #1 on the Rap Songs chart. “Every time you listen to the album you get something new. I was worried that he was such a great lyricist that that wouldn’t translate to sales and then he blew it out of the water,” said RapFix Blog Editor Nadeska Alexis.
Other factors considered were his vicious guest verses (A$AP Rocky “1 Train”, 50 Cent “We On”), non-album street bangers (“Cookies & Cereal”) and his intangible impact on the new generations of Hip Hop artists. “I think Kendrick is kinda shifting the momentum of hip-hop a little bit,” said MTV News Senior Hip Hop Writer Rob Markman.
King Kendrick beat out Hip Hop heavyweights Rick Ross, Kanye West and Nas to land the top spot in his first year being featured on the list. But beating the competition is nothign new to the good kid. Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city album is hailed as a classic and was the fastest selling rap album of 2012 with it entering the year-end Top 5 best sellers after only 2 full months on the charts. He also recently received awards for Best Rapper and Best Album by the XXL readers.
Kendrick was surprised to hear the news that he was deemed the hottest MC of 2012 as he spoke with Sway backstage at RapFix:
“That’s crazy. We was looking at the years of the different MCs, and we were like, ‘Man, we gotta get on there, we gotta at least get on there.’ But to make it to #1, that’s a whole ‘nother thing… I feel good. Salute!”

(AllHipHop News) Julio Acevedo is finally going to be brought to justice after fleeing the scene of a hit and run incident which claimed the life of a couple and their unborn child.
The 44-year-old Acevedo was apprehended by NYPD officers in Bethlehem, PA after a friend arranged for his surrender.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Wednesday (March 6th), Acevedo surrendered to NYPD officers after awaiting extradition to New York while being held by Pennsylvania State Police.
According to chief spokesman for the New York Police Department Paul Browne, Acevedo has only been charged with fleeing a crime scene, said nothing to the police officers and had no attorney present when arrested.
On Sunday (March 3) Acevedo crashed into a cab with Nachman Glauber and a pregnant Raizel Glauber as his BMW was allegedly going 60 mph.
Acevedo was arrested less than a month prior on February 17th for driving with a blood-alcohol level almost double the .08 legal limit.
Acevedo informed a reporter at WABC/Channel 7 on March 6th that he was speeding to escape gunfire he experienced near Carlton Avenue.
“I was speeding trying to get away because I was scared from someone shooting at me,” Acevedo told reporters. Carlton Avenue was the home of deceased street thug Kelvin “50 Cent” Martin whom Acevedo murdered in 1987.
The man who inspired Curtis Jackson’s rap moniker was affiliated with a few Hip-Hop heavyweights such as Eric B and imprisoned manager Jimmy “Henchman” Rosemond.
Henchman helped tell the story of the deceased stick-up kid in the 2005 DVD “The Infamous Times-Volume 1: The Original 50 Cent”.
The current 50 Cent filed a lawsuit claiming Henchman used unauthorized interviews and failed to give the DVD’s proceed’s to Martin’s family.
However, the two parties eventually reached an undisclosed agreement.

Sixteen years ago we lost one of the most influential and talented rappers, Christopher Wallace aka The Notorious B.I.G.
B.I.G. put Brooklyn on a national stage. His unique style and hometown pride left a mark that can still be heard on radio stations around the world. Since his passing a lot has changed. Here are some thing we think would make Biggie proud to be from the county of Kings.
The Birth of the Brooklyn Nets
Although Big would’ve had a difficult time identifying half the NBA teams these days, he’d relate to the Brooklyn Nets. The new team and is in walking distance from his childhood home in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill section. In their first year, The Nets are playoff bound holding their own against fellow New York rivals, The Knicks.
Jay-Z’s Dominance
While we talking about balling…so hard..we’ve got to mention the current King of Brooklyn, Jay-Z. About 3 years after Biggie’s passing, Jay claimed that Biggie would’ve been proud of him, on the classic “Squeeze First” cut. Thirteen years later, that line couldn’t be more evident. Jigga’s retired, came back, topped the chart solo, joined forced with his Chicago son Kanye, poured his own liquor in Grammy Awards, sits court side at his team’s game with his successful wife.
Yet, Jay-Z still finds time to big up his Borough, and the late great that hailed from there.
His Children

Christopher Wallace’s daughter, T’yanna, made her debut in her father’s first music video. His son and namesake, Christopher Wallace Jr., was an infant when his father dies but made his acting debut playing him in Notorious. T’yanna recently got a 2nd tattoo paying homage to her father. Before you start questioning this move, you got to understand that she’s a grown woman now. She’s not the same “One More Chance” voice telling thirsty hoes to stop calling her pops. She’s currently studying business at Penn State, and handling her own. CJ has been calling Hollywood home were his career as a young actor is budding.
Sean Combs aka P. Diddy aka Puff Daddy
Diddy is still Bad Boy for life. He has a the hit maker in French Montana building quite the buzz on the roster. Machine Gun Kelly debuted #4 on the charts in 2013. When it comes to business, Diddy is still one of the best to do it. He got his Ciroc for the club, and Aquahydrate for the hang over. Not only that, but he has plans on bringing Hip-Hop back to the TV with his new cable network Revolt.
New York’s New Young Rappers
Being a New York artist, requires the artist to be dope lyrically, and blessed with a crazy flow. In 2012, Joey Bada$$ met the criteria and left us nostalgic with his acclaimed 1999 mixtape. Bada$$ is a breath of fresh air in NY, and there were even rumors of him joining Roc Nation. With him, A$AP Rock has had the city only look for the past few months. His Album debuted #1 on the boards, even with the album being leaked a full month of its release date. Now, Biggie may not have co-signed a few fashion choices from Rocky but I’m sure he wouldn’t mind NY getting its props.
