Just when you thought the police couldn’t get worse with their stupidity…
Two people spent a month in jail because police mistook two packages of soap for cocaine. Annadel Cruz, 26, was driving a Mercedez-Benz on Interstate 79 in Lehigh County, Penn., on November 13 when troopers pulled her over for speeding, reports the Huffington Post. When questioned about a marijuana smell coming from her car Cruz admitted that she smoked earlier in the day and produced the small amount that she was carrying.
The trooper then found two white bricks wrapped in clear packaging and Cruz informed them that it was homemade soap. Field tests allegedly indicated the substance was cocaine, so Cruz and her passenger were sent to jail on cocaine-trafficking charges. The passenger’s bail was set at $500,000. Cruz was also charged with marijuana possession and traffic violations and her bail was set at $250,000.
It took authorities an entire month to determine that the white bricks were actually soap.
Both parties have been released but their attorneys believe that Cruz was profiled.
“I think it is a nice car with out-of-state plates and a Hispanic female behind the wheel. If it was me driving that car, this wouldn’t have happened,” said her passenger, Alexander Bernstein.
Their lawyers also believe that either the field test was never conducted or something wasn’t done properly.
There’s no word on what actions Cruz and Bernstein plan to take but they better sue or as much as they can get.
What kind of dumb a### cops…
